Tite Kubo introduced the Espadas as a group of bada** villains in Bleach who would go against the Gotei 13. However, not all of them were great. In fact, other than a chosen few, most of the Espadas ultimately became cannon fodder. But fans are really not happy that even the strongest of the bunch could not leave a proper impression.
The Espadas were the top-performing Arrancars who possessed Shinigami-like powers. They were the main adversaries against the Gotei 13. Sosuke Aizen even took it upon himself to assess their reatsu output and assign numbers to them. The lower the number, the higher the danger. However, the top 3 Espada fumbled a bit too hard.

While all of Bleach's villains are crafted using a blend of unique abilities and distinct character designs, fans generally care more about a villain's overall presentation than their powers alone. Many of the Bleach anime's best villains have a certain badass aura that makes just as much of an impression as their strength. The roughest Bleach anime villains make their hardcore personalities clear through their confidence, brashness, and toughness.
Bleach's badass villains are often presented either as cocky characters who play by their own rules like Sosuke Aizen or tremendous forces of darkness like Äs Nödt. Power levels aside, a captivating personality is enough to help Bleach villains eat up the spotlight every time they're onscreen. Some Bleach antagonists with relatively small influence are even recognized as cool characters because of the badass energy they bring to the story with every appearance.

When it comes to villains in shonen action anime, Bleach is one that has its fair share. Villains like Grimmjow Jaegerjaques and pitiable Coyote Starrk are easier to forgive, but some of the series' most dangerous and vile characters revel in their darkness, scarecly thinking twice about exploiting, harming or terrorizing the people around them for their own benefit.
Villains of this caliper are remembered for committing some of the most atrocious and unjustifiable acts. Fans can't overlook the things they've done, even when they seemingly have a change of heart or switch sides. Fortunately, Bleach's heroes put themselves on the front line to stop those villains who would destroy everything in their path without a second thought. It's also a boon that the most unforgivable villains tend to have pretty thin plot armor, so they can be taken out of play quickly enough to satisfy anime fans who...

For many anime fans, the bombastic action scenes pulled them in before anything else. The great stories and awesome characters might've helped them stay, but the action is what catches most people's eyes. Even veteran anime fans still love watching a captivating fight scene unfold.
That just makes it all the more frustrating when a fight that could've been great just winds up letting fans down. Sometimes the fight just wasn't as important to the studio as it was to the fans. Other times, the animation drags the fight down, making it a chore to watch. Whatever the case, disappointed fans wind up being the real losers.

Sometimes a last-second reveal of a joke character's true power is cool. Bleach's introduction of Yammy's true identity is not one of those times.

This article contains spoilers for Bleach's manga and anime. Proceed with caution.
Besides its iconic characters and fights, Bleachmade its mark on the anime community in the early 2000s thanks to its unforgettable plot twists. Twists like Sosuke Aizen revealing himself to be the story's overall villain or Old Man Zangetsu actually being a vestige of Emperor Yhwach didn't just turn Ichigo Kurosaki's world upside down, but recontextualized Bleach as a whole.
That's not to say fans loved all of Bleach's twists, especially back when the manga updated weekly and when the original anime was still on the air. Some of these twists were just questionable, but others outright angered the fanbase. It was only thanks to time and hindsight that fans appreciated these twists and understood how they fit into Bleach's bigger picture.

Every Soul Reaper in Bleachwields a Zanpakutō that can achieve both Shikai and Bankai. Bleach fans have witnessed many Bankai over the years and each new release is iconic in its own way, which is why the first ten Bankai are so special. Every Bankai is highly effective in battle, but certain Bankai are more powerful than others and there is a distinct hierarchy amongst the first 10 Bankai.
A Bankai is basically a trump card that can destroy a single target or multiple enemies at once. The first ten Bankai came in various shapes and sizes, and several of them take the form of large living creatures. Some of these Bankai are completely melee oriented, while others specialize in ranged and elemental attacks. A few of these Bankai did not defeat their intended target, but many of them did.

As well as being an action adventure shonen anime, Bleach is also a character drama, adding serious emotional weight and personal stakes to almost everything that happens. The anime features plenty of tragic characters who are good people suffering misfortune they never deserved. Tragic characters show them that when things are tough, justice is absent, and the forces of evil often get their way.
Fortunately, many of the most tragic characters in Bleach survive and have their fortunes reversed in the end, and even those who died found at least some happiness during their darkest times. These tragic Bleach characters suffered personal losses, betrayal, or suffering without deserving any of it, and it often shaped them as people forever — if they even survived, that is.

In Bleach, the Espada are considered the strongest Arrancar, with each representing a different Aspect of Death. Like other Arrancar, the Espada were once Hollows, but they were granted Shinigami powers thanks to Aizen and the Hogyoku. The Espada played a major role in Bleach's story and, for the most part, each member had a satisfying conclusion.
For many of the Espada, their fates were sealed as soon as they became enemies of the Soul Society. As a result, many of them were killed in battle during the Hueco Mundo and Fake Karakura Town arcs. Some managed to survive the conflict, but their fates were not revealed until the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. In one case, an Espada made a surprise return during the Echoing Jaws of Hell manga arc.

In recent times, Tite Kubo’s Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has become one of the most popular Shonen series that has taken the anime industry by storm. The show has been an outstanding adaptation of the manga, where Studio Pierrot has taken the animation to a whole new level that will make the fans forgive the reason for the show getting so delayed.

For the most part, Arrancars are villains in the story of Bleach, most of all the ten mighty Espadas who served under Sosuke Aizen the villain in the Arrancar saga. Characters like Yammy, Ulquiorra, and Aaroniero set the tone for these bizarre spiritual beings, but over time, Bleach fans met some exceptions who helped make Arrancars feel like more than villains for the sake of it. A few honorable and fair-minded Arrancars did exist, with Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck being the best example.
While Bleach fans may appreciate Grimmjow Jaegerjaques and Coyote Starrk as halfway sympathetic antiheroes, Nelliel is one of the few Arrancars who can truly be called a hero. She was a precious bright spot in an otherwise bleak world, and even if Nelliel couldn't find salvation as a hollow being, she compensated for it with virtuous traits and was rewarded with a halfway fair character arc. The legendary Dragon Ball franchise helped inspire the shonen "big three," meaning these four series have some overlap in how they design their characters, combat systems, and storytelling. The characters in one series could realistically fit into the universe of another anime, especially if they have the right powers and attitude to thrive in those other universes. Bleach, for example, could send some of its fighters into Dragon Ball and let them thrive there.
Some Bleach characters are a bad fit for Dragon Ball's universe because they rely on trickery and traps, which conflicts with Dragon Ball's love of brutal martial arts and ki blasts in its fights. But some other Bleach heroes and villains have the right stuff to join Son Goku in his universe and fight Saiyans, Cell, androids, and other warriors on their own terms and enjoy it.

The hit shonen series Bleach regularly expanded not only the types of powers that its characters can use, but also the types of characters who used them. First, fans got a taste of what monstrous Hollows are like, such as Grand Fisher and Shrieker, and then fans saw all kinds of shikai, bankai, and kido spells in the fondly-remembered Soul Society story arc. Next came the Arrancar saga, which ushered in the Arrancars, or unmasked Hollows who gained humanoid forms and zanpakuto of their own. That included the ten Espadas as well.
It didn't take long for Bleach fans to appreciate what a horrific threat the Espadas were. Fans got a taste of them when Ulquiorra and Yammy invaded Karakura Town one afternoon, and then fans saw the ferocious power of Grimmjow, another Espada, as he kept picking fights with Ichigo Kurosaki. The epic shonen adventure of Bleach can be divided into a handful of story arcs, some of them longer than others. The story began with the Substitute Soul Reaper arc, followed by the fondly-remembered Soul Society story arc. In that second arc, protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki fought whom he thought was his worst enemy, only to learn that the traitorous Captain Sosuke Aizen was the true villain after all. Aizen's shocking betrayal brought peace between Ichigo and the Soul Reapers, but the struggle wasn't over, because the threat of the Arrancars was on the horizon.
Ichigo and his friends had faced Hollows before, but they weren't ready for unmasked, sword-wielding Hollows to be their next opponents, and those monsters were far stronger than the likes of Acidwire and Shrieker. Thus began the Arrancar arc, introducing Arrancars as unmasked Hollows who obeyed Sosuke Aizen's every command, and that threat forced Ichigo...

Tite Kubo has a special talent for designing effortlessly cool Bleach villains, but for every Sosuke Aizen that radiates pure raw power, theres a few Espada that get downplayed by the fandom at large. Some antagonists can be genuinely strong, but due to a number of reasons, their canon portrayal is not favorably compared to the rest of the cast. This is why Yammy Llargo seems like a joke in contrast to Ulquiorra Cifer.
In a supernatural fighting series where power levels often fluctuate, many villains seem a lot weaker than what their actual potential suggests. This is mostly due to unfavorable match-ups, random interferences, or critical error decisions on the battlefield. Despite whatever the plot dictates, these antagonists should not be underestimated by any means. Even the supposedly weaker Bleach villains can be a menace without any warning.

While the fondly-remembered Soul Society arc remains a high-water point for the Bleach anime, fans must not underestimate the incredible Arrancar saga and its many exciting plot twists. In that saga, Ichigo mastered his Hollow mask and found his resolve as a swordman, while Sosuke Aizen summoned an army of Arrancars to help him claim the throne of heaven. The saga begins with the Arrancars' first few incursions into Karakura Town, and by the saga's end, the story goes full circle with another Karakura Town invasion.
That was the Arrancar: Downfall story arc, the final major arc in the overall Arrancar saga, where the united Soul Reapers finish off the Arrancars once and for all. For many chapters and episodes in Bleach, the Arrancars terrorized Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends, such as Orihime's abduction and Ichigo's near-death experience with Ulquiorra, but the Arrancar: Downfall arc flipped the script on all that.

Kenpachi Zaraki is the Captain of Squad 11, and he was considered one of the strongest characters in Bleach despite the fact that he intentionally suppressed his power. During the events of the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, he finally awakened his full strength. Kenpachi has defeated powerful opponents like Nnoitra, Yammy, and Gremmy, and he has fought characters like Ichigo, Byakuya, and Yhwach.
There are other strong Bleach characters that he never got to fight. Many of the Bleach characters that Kenpachi never fights are fellow Captain-level Soul Reapers. He has fought a few Espada, but he did not have the chance to fight some of the group's strongest members due to their paths never crossing in the heat of battle. There is even an elite Quincy that managed to avoid Kenpachi's lust for battle.

A rescue arc is practically a mandated trope in anime. A friend, family member, or lover is taken, and it's the hero's job to save them. This trope is a great way to add stakes to any series and also introduce a band of villains for the heroes to fight.
