MCU Special Werewolf by Night Gets Promising Sequel Update 3 Years Later
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Werewolf by Nightdirector and incoming comic book writer discusses the possibility of another streaming special.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming Marvel Comics one-shot, Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino responded to questions of returning for another horror-fueled MCU outing with, "I think I would like to do something with the story that we created for television, but that's got its own thing going and it doesn't quite slot into what's happening currently in Jack's life in the Marvel [comics] world. So there's a little bit of navigating there."

Giacchino went on to note the drastic shift in production for various streaming platforms and studios following the recent decline in the industry. "I would love to do another Werewolf by Night [special] more than anything," Giacchino explained. "I think we're just waiting for the industry to settle into its new norm, whatever that is at this point,...

Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino is writing the comic book Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise
Image
Not only has Michael Giacchino contributed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by composing the scores for such films as Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Thor: Love and Thunder (he did that one with Nami Melumad), and this summer’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but he also directed the Disney+ “Special Presentation” Werewolf by Night – and now, Entertainment Weekly reports that Giacchino is returning to the world of Werewolf by Night by writing the one-shot comic book Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise, which pits the werewolf hero Jack Russell against Dracula and is set to reach store shelves on July 30th!

Instead of connecting the comic book to the Werewolf by Night special he directed, Giacchino has crafted a story that’s set during the original run of Jack Russell stories, which Marvel Comics launched back in in 1972. He told Entertainment Weekly,...

Werewolf By Night Director Michael Giacchino To Write New Marvel Comic; Teases Character's MCU Future
Image
It's been confirmed today that Michael Giacchino, director of Marvel Studios 'Special Presentation Werewolf by Night, will write Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise, a new Marvel comic book hitting stands in July.

The Academy Award-winning composer of The Fantastic Four: First Steps made his directorial debut in the acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe special. Now, he teams up with artist David Messina (Ultimate Spider-Man) to deliver another tale of terror starring Jack Russell, this time set in the Marvel Comics universe.

Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise spotlights what makes Werewolf By Night such a captivating Marvel icon, with over fifty years of comics history - and a hundred times as many bodies in his wake.

In addition to Giacchino's story that pits the tortured hero against Dracula, the one-shot will also have a backup story by Jason Loo, writer of the current Werewolf By Night: Red Band comic series,...

Image
Michael Giacchinois getting another chance to work on Werewolf by Night. The artist who has built a career for himself by composing the score for major productions is writing a Marvel comic book based around the character. The announcement comes a couple of years after Giacchino directed a Werewolf by Night television special for Marvel Studios and Disney+. The upcoming comic book will be titled "Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise". The story will feature illustrations from artist David Messina, who previously worked with Marvel Comics in titles such as "Ultimate Spider-Man" and "Han Solo & Chewbacca".

The upcoming comic book written by Michael Giacchino will feature Dracula tracking down the titular creature due to a disagreement that took place the last time they were seen together in a Marvel story. ‘Blood Moon Rise’ – Michael Giacchino Wrote a New ‘Werewolf by Night’ Comic for Marvel
Image
It was Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino who sat in the director’s chair for Marvel’s Disney+ Halloween special Werewolf by Night back in 2022, and now Giacchino is headed into the comic book arena with Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise for Marvel Comics.

The upcoming comic was previewed by Entertainment Weekly this morning, with the outlet revealing that Michael Giacchino’s comic is not actually connected to the aforementioned Werewolf by Night special he directed for Disney+. Rather, it’s set to be “a tale set during the original run of Jack Russell stories, which launched in Marvel Comics in 1972.”

He teases, “It could be a lost story from the original run, in a way. It’s Dracula who has tracked him down to exact some revenge from the last time that they were together in the comics.”

From writer Michael Giacchino and artist David Messina (Ultimate Spider-Man), Werewolf...

Ultimate Spider-Man Confirms It's Reinventing a Raimi Trilogy Villain
Image
Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #15!

Marvel Comics’ current Ultimate Universe is officially about to welcome a classic Spider-Man villain to its growing cast, with a Raimiverse character finally set to make a smashing debut. The final entry in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, Spider-Man 3 from 2007, featured a few different antagonists that Peter Parker had to face off against, and the messiest one is about to wreak havoc on Peter and his family.

Marvel has released new details about Ultimate Spider-Man #15 – written by Jonathan Hickman, with art by David Messina – which officially reboots another iconic villain for this version of Spidey’s expanding rogues gallery, as Marco Checchetto’s action-packed cover provides the first look at the new Sandman in the Ultimate Universe.

Marvel Has Redefined Its Most Iconic Heroes by Telling Their Stories in Real-Time (Spider-Man Included)
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #11Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe has been a massive success, but one Spider-Man moment has shown just how successful the books’ real-time structure has been for the line. It’s not a perfect device, but it's still an impressive accomplishment and a neat trick that changes the way that these stories are being told.

In Ultimate Spider-Man #11 by Jonathan Hickman, David Messina, Matt Wilson, and Cory Petit, Uncle Ben makes an offhand comment that reveals just how clever the real-time flow of the new Ultimate Universe has been.

Ben and Peter Parker meet up at Aunt May’s memorial to commemorate a year since the supposed terrorist attack that killed her. Readers might not pick up on it, but it’s been almost exactly a year in real time, too. This synchronicity is one of the many factors that helps this universe feel so present,...

Rory Kinnear in Men (2022)
The 15 absolute best comic books of the year
Rory Kinnear in Men (2022)
2024 has been an intense year for the world of comic books. The X-Men saved the universe, Amanda Waller took over the world for a little while, and the Energon Universe continued to be a must-read storyline. Then there are the plethora of comic books like Space Ghost by David Pepose, Thundercats by Declan Shalvey, and The Displaced by Ed Brisson that are vastly underrated.

The high standard of comics this year made it difficult to rank the best comic books of the year. Instead, these are the Top 15 comic books of 2024 in no particular order.

Ultimate Spider-ManWriter: Tom KingArtists: Marco Checchetto, David Messina

There’s a lot to praise about Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man, but the relationship that Peter Parker has with his family sticks out more than anything because it helps shape him as a hero.

Peter Parker isn’t just Spider-Man. He’s a husband and a father.

That's It, I Need Spider-Man's Mister Negative In The MCU Asap
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #11Following the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, I now need Mister Negative to be in the MCU as soon as possible. Having become a breakout villain in Sony's Spider-Man games for Playstation, Martin Li has never had a bigger spotlight than the one he's had in the last few years. While that spotlight is even bigger thanks to the Ultimate Universe, I really want it to get even bigger with a live-action MCU debut for the iconic New York-based supervillain.

As seen in Marvel's new Ultimate Spider-Man #11 by Jonathan Hickman and David Messina, Spider-Man encounters Mister Negative for the first time. One of Wilson Fisk's lieutenants that make up the Ultimate Universe's Sinister Six, Mister Negative helps run New York with his gang known as the Demons, mirroring the Mister Negative of the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616). However, this...

Marvel Just Proved Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man Trilogy Lives On, But In a New Form
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #11! Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is easily one of the most iconic installments of the character’s mythos, as it stands as the definitive Spider-Man live-action adaptation for many Marvel Comics fans. It’s so beloved, in fact, that many people are calling for a Spider-Man 4, and Tobey Maguire’s inclusion in Spider-Man: No Way Home was arguably the best part of the movie. Unfortunately, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man may have run its course, and fans may not get any more of that universe. At least, not directly, as Marvel just proved Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy lives on in an all-new form.

In Ultimate Spider-Man #11 by Jonathan Hickman and David Messina, Spider-Man is going on patrol without his usual partner, the Green Goblin. In the Ultimate Universe, Spider-Man and the Green Goblin aren’t enemies, but rather heroic allies and best friends.

Okay, Spider-Man Has Never Had Stakes This High Before, So I'm Getting Worried
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #11The stakes are getting very high in Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man, and I'm pretty worried seeing as how he has so much more to lose compared to the Webslinger of the primary Marvel Universe. Receiving his powers late in life due to the manipulations of The Maker, Peter Parker is married to Mary Jane Watson and the pair have had two children before he becomes Spider-Man in this new Ultimate Universe. To that end, it's hard to watch the threats continue to pile up around Spider-Man and his family.

As seen in the new Ultimate Spider-Man #11 by Jonathan Hickman and David Messina, Peter Parker returns home after receiving a substantial beating from a mob of New York citizens under the influence and corruption of Mister Negative, one of Wilson Fisk's Sinister Six in the Ultimate Universe. To that end, Spider-Man's...

Marvel's New Spider-Man Resets a Key Piece of Lore About Peter's Family

Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #11 ahead!

The death of Spider-Man's Uncle Ben, alongside his oft-misquoted philosophy, "with great power there must also come great responsibility," set the tenor for Spider-Man's entire career. Yet a seemingly off-hand remark between Spider-Man and Ben Parker in Marvel's Ultimate Universe has given readers a reason to doubt Spider-Man's entire ethos, forcing readers to wonder how Ben Parker would have reacted to his nephew becoming Spider-Man.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #11 written by Jonathan Hickman, with art by David Messina concludes with Peter Parker meeting his Uncle Ben at Aunt May's memorial, in a moment that pays off the creative decision to invert Ben and May's roles in the fledgling Webslinger's life.

Spider-Man isnt just one of Marvel Comics most iconic superheroes of all time, but his comic book franchise has spawned a number of other heroes as well over the years, and some of them are downright shocking. Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #10

Marvel Comics' Ultimate Spider-Man series just gave Uncle Ben his very own mask and codename. The new UItimate Universe was created when a diabolical genius known as The Maker created his ideal Earth by systematically preventing anyone from ever becoming a superhero. To rule his perfected reality, he placed supervillains in charge of different regions, and together, The Maker's Council orchestrated the history of the world.

When Tony Stark discovered its true history, the Maker's Council perpetrated a terrible attack on New York City in Stark's name.

Marvel permanently kills off Norman Osborn, sparking Harry Osborn's transformation into the Green Goblin. Spider-Man's Controversial Mary Jane Cover Gets New Update for 2024

The art references Campbell's cover for Amazing Spider-Man #601, which was criticized for over-sexualizing Mary Jane Watson. Pulled from the pages of Lovecraftian horror, the Nameless are creatures capable of inducing violent hallucinations in Force-wielders. The victim first lashes out at those around them, and is then rendered helpless, allowing the predator to attack and feed upon otherwise the most powerful beings in the galaxy with impunity. While fans have seen the Levelers...

Star Wars Just Fixed 'Han Shot First'
Image
Spoilers for Han Solo & Chewbacca #10!A new Star Wars comic provides more support for fans who maintain that Han Solo shot first in his final confrontation with Greedo. The Star Wars franchise is rich with both backstories for even the smallest of details, and retroactive story changes made to the timeline. The widely held fan belief that Han shot Greedo first in A New Hope is an example of both, and now a new story from the smuggler’s provides further context to the iconic scene.

In Han Solo & Chewbacca #10 by Marc Guggenheim and David Messina, Han (in events preceding A New Hope) attempts to escape his enemies who are after an urn in his possession. Jabba the Hutt’s bounty on the urn has led to many encounters with bounty hunters and lawmen, including the criminal Corbus Tyra. He is able to steal the urn by posing as Han’s estranged father,...

Star Wars' New Droid Uprising Gets Official Connection To Solo's L3-37
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Han Solo & Chewbacca #9Star Wars officially connects the legacy of Solo's L3-37 to its ongoing droid revolution. Featured across multiple recent projects in the galaxy far, far away (including in the new trailer for The Mandalorian season 3), droids have been getting a much bigger spotlight. Showcasing their true capacity for free will, the concept of droids clashing against their second-class status in the galaxy was first seen with L3, Lando Calrissian's original droid co-pilot. However, the latest issue of Han Solo & Chewbacca confirms she wasn't the first to fight back against organics.

In the new Han Solo & Chewbacca #9 from Marc Guggenheim and David Messina, the infamous smuggler and his Wookiee co-pilot discover the real reason Jabba the Hutt hired them to collect an urn filled with the ashes of one of his rivals. Han and Chewie discover that the urn actually contains the...

Star Wars Justifies a Bizarre George Lucas Movie Change
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca #8!Some of George Lucas' changes to Star Wars' Original Trilogy have baffled viewers for decades, but one Han Solo comic has now revealed an in-universe reason for one of his strangest changes. Han’s trust is hard to earn, and his trust issues reframe this seemingly odd change as perfectly in character.

In 1997, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, the original Star Wars trilogy movies were all given ‘Special Editions’ which not only cleaned up the original footage but also added new special effects, changed lines of dialogue, and added new scenes and details. These changes have been massively controversial, especially since these new versions have become the default viewing experience, with the original cuts relegated to early VHS tapes. One such change occurs in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. In Return, where Han Solo tells Lando Calrissian,...

Star Wars Gifts Fans the Perfect Fact About the Millennium Falcon
Image
Spoilers for Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca #8!In a galaxy far, far away, the Millennium Falcon is an iconic Star Wars starship of legend, or, depending on who you ask, a vessel that allows snakes and scoundrels to flourish, with its ownership changing hands more than once across its decades-long lifespan. And now, thanks to a little galactic game of chance called sabacc, the Falcon can officially be considered the only vehicle suited for all kinds of liars and cheats across the galaxy!

A ship that made the Kessel Run in “less than twelve parsecs,” the Millennium Falcon is just as notoriously famous as its scruffy-looking nerf herder of a pilot named Han Solo and has managed to come out the other side of some truly nasty galactic conflicts over the years. Whether it be Lando Calrissian taking ownership of the craft after winning (and most likely cheating) at...

Star Wars Spills The Secret of Chewbacca's 'Return of the Jedi' Rescue
Image
There have been no shortage of rescue missions that have occurred throughout Star Wars–from rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi to rescuing Princess Leia from the Empire in A New Hope–with one specific tactic that is used practically every time, and now the secret behind that particularly repetitive rescue plan has officially been explained.

In Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Princess Leia is taken prisoner on board the Death Star, and in response, Obi-Wan, Luke, Han Solo, and Chewbacca form a plan to rescue her–one where Luke and Han pretend to be Storm Troopers and Chewie pretends to be their prisoner, giving them unquestioned access to the holding cells. Then, in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, Han Solo is frozen in carbonite and is being held captive by Jabba the Hutt. To save him,...

Grand Moff Tarkin Exposes the Biggest Weakness of Palpatine's Regime
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Han Solo & Chewbacca #8!Star Wars may be a story about the honorable Rebellion defeating the overwhelmingly evil Galactic Empire, but new details suggest that Palpatine and the philosophy of his subordinates doomed them from the start. Sidious’s regime is composed of an immeasurable army of stormtroopers and force-sensitive agent,s but his government shares almost every inherent weakness that the Sith Empire had during the Old Republic era. These vulnerabilities, which not even the leaders of the Galactic Empire could see, are exploited in a heist conducted by Han Solo and Chewbacca.

In Han Solo & Chewbacca #8 by Marc Guggenheim and David Messina, Han, Chewbacca, and the teenage criminal Phaedra, devise a plan to infiltrate the heavily guarded office of Grand Moff Tarkin at the heart of Star Wars' Imperial capital. Han and Chewie are able to do so disguised as sewage workers, knowing that no Imperial...

Star Wars Confirms Greedo Owned the Millennium Falcon Before A New Hope
Image
Han Solo’s bounty hunter rival Greedo briefly owned the iconic Star Wars vessel the Millennium Falcon before the events of A New Hope, as revealed in a canon comic. The famous Yt-1300 Corellian freighter has a storied history throughout both the canon and Legends Star Wars timelines, with its best-known owners being Lando Calrissian and the smuggling due of Han Solo and Chewbacca. The canon timeline adds the deadly bounty hunter Greedo to the vessel’s history, deepening his feud with Han Solo and the pair’s dialogue in A New Hope.

Greedo’s early years as a bounty hunter are shown in canon’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, in which the novice mercenary is part of a plot to kidnap Chairman Papanoida’s family. In his prime, Greedo thinks of himself as a prestigious bounty hunter due to his employment by Jabba the Hutt, yet his colleagues...

Star Trek Confirms the Dark Reason Why Gorn Are So Powerful
Image
The Gorn are one of the most powerful species in the Star Trek universe–and there is a dark reason why this is. In Star Trek Alien Spotlight: The Gorn, first published by Idw, readers are treated to a fascinating glimpse into Gorn society–namely the way they treat their young. It is very much “survival of the fittest,” with the strongest ascending to the top of the chain–showing why the Gorn are so formidable.

Despite making only a bare minimum of on-screen appearances, the Gorn have become a fan-favorite race in the Star Trek franchise. Resembling large, bipedal reptiles, the Gorn first appeared in the first season of the classic Star Trek Original Series, in an episode titled “Arena.” The episode showed the Gorn were a force to be reckoned with, but sadly (most likely due to budget constraints) they have only made sporadic appearances since, showing up...

Following the recent news about Patty Jenkins' departure from "Wonder Woman 3," the director posted an update on social media to set the record straight:

"I originally left 'Rogue Squadron' after a long and productive development process when it became clear it couldn't happen soon enough and I did not want to delay 'Wonder Woman 3' any further. When I did, Lucasfilm asked me to consider coming back to 'Rogue Squadron' after 'Wonder Woman 3,' which I was honored to do, so I agreed. They made a new deal with me. In fact, I am still on it and that project has been in active development ever since. I don't know if it will happen or not.
