The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox TV Review: A distinct look into the crime that shocked the world
Image
Plot: A limited series inspired by the story of how Amanda Knox was wrongfully convicted for the tragic murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.

Review: Guilty or innocent, few things are as damning as public opinion. With media latching on to every juicy crime story for tabloid fodder, the true crime genre has been chock full of stories, few of which have been as massive as the trial of Amanda Knox. Chronicling her arrest in 2007 for the murder of her roommate in Italy through developments from the last few years, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is the first comprehensive look at the criminal investigation and subsequent legal battles. With Knox aboard as producer, the series stars Grace Van Patten as the college student turned media darling whose judgment was passed not only by Italian courts but the entire world. Providing a...

‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’ Review: Grace Van Patten Nails the Murder Suspect’s Essence in Hulu’s Operatic Limited Series
Image
Late into “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,” the eight-part Hulu limited series recounting the aftermath of the 2007 murder of British study-abroad student Meredith Kercher in Italy, a supporting character makes a valid point.

Speaking many years after the murder, he notes that the case is still identified primarily as the “Amanda Knox” case, even though Knox, Kercher’s American roommate in Perugia, Italy, was acquitted of killing Kercher in 2015 after a yearslong odyssey that included four years in custody.

His observation makes a viewer presume the show will finally get to the part where it tells us more about Kercher, whose brief life story, as Knox herself has said in real life, was obscured by the sensational, yearslong legal battles of Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, the Italian boyfriend arrested alongside Knox.

But that part never comes, and its absence mars this mostly engaging and well-acted limited series anchored by...

Vermiglio Review – Tromsø International Film Festival
Image
The title of Maura Delpero’s second feature refers to a small Italian Alpine village. There is talk of war amongst the community, but at first it’s hard to place which war is being referred to. It’s actually 1944 and the war has taken most of the young men away, but this community seems entrenched in a distant past. The women are all kitted out in long skirts, there are few signs of electricity or motorised transport, the schoolchildren recite the Lord’s prayer in Latin, illiteracy among the adults reigns.

One of the village elders is Cesare Graziadei (Tommaso Ragno) and the story revolves around him and his increasingly large family. The film opens with the simplicity of the family’s rigorous morning routine, with chores being performed, milk going from cow to cup and each member getting an equal share. A sense of complete togetherness is implied.

Box office: ‘Nosferatu’ crosses $50 million mark; ‘Mufasa’ and ‘Sonic’ continue race for first place
Image
Nosferatu crossed the $50 million mark on New Year’s Day, marking a significant box-office milestone and becoming director Robert Eggers highest-grossing film to date. The horror flick surpassed The Northman, which pulled in nearly $35 million in 2022.

Heading into the weekend of Jan. 3 – Jan. 5, Mufasa: The Lion King continues its claw-biting race against Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which narrowly blocked the Disney picture from claiming the top spot last weekend. Showing greater holding power, Mufasa is expected to squeak out a first-place finish this weekend with around $20 million. Sonic is expected to drop to second, but it’s going to be close.

'Vermiglio' Review | Slow War Drama Challenges Religious Patriarchy
Image
In the remote mountain town of Vermiglio, Italy, a Sicilian World War II deserter dramatically affects the lives of a teacher's family who shelters him. Writer/director Maura Delpero crafts a sublime exploration of secrets, lies, and patriarchal dominance within a devout and insular social order. Vermiglio, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and Italy's submission for Best International Film at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards, is largely seen through the eyes of innocent children as they try to comprehend the seismic events happening around them. The film's magnificent cinematography and score aid a glacial pace that builds steam to a sobering and deeply emotional climax.

In 1944, the Graziadei family huddles together in their various bedrooms to thwart the cold. The white-haired Cesare, the town's respected teacher, lies beside his wife Adele and their infant son, the parents' ninth child. The plot primarily revolves around their three daughters,...

Vermiglio (2024) Movie Review: Beautiful Family Drama Examines Tradition and Domesticity
Maura Delpero
Maura Delpero’s gorgeous historical drama “Vermiglio” may take place amidst the backdrop of World War II, but the existentialist themes that it examines are relevant to any era in which a culture is faced with a moment of change. Evolution does not mean the extinction of old ideas, but societal values tend to change when the next generation decides to reshape the values that were passed down by their predecessors. There are weighty themes like this at the center of “Vermiglio,” but what is most outstanding is that they are all filtered through the specificity of an intimate family drama. There aren’t any heroes or villains in “Vermiglio.” Delpero makes the case that even the most bitter of familial conflicts can be waged with compassion in mind.

At the center of “Vermiglio” is Cesare (Tomasso Ragno), a stern school teacher who takes it upon himself to maintain the...

Vermiglio Review: Italy’s 2025 Oscars Submission Is An Alpine Wonder Of Beauty & Empathy
Image
Vermiglio is one of those great films that's hard to fully capture in writing, because it is and does so many things. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (essentially second place) and is gaining steam as Italy's submission to the Oscars, which paints one picture. It's an indie box office hit in its own country, which paints another. It's artful, atmospheric, and observant; a slice-of-life film told in a hushed tone. It's dedicated to recreating a specific time and place and dropping us into it. There's a gentle steadiness to the way it moves.

Set in post-World War II Italy, Vermiglio explores the transformative journey of three sisters living in a small mountain village, prompted by the arrival of a soldier. The film chronicles their personal growth and the evolution of their relationships amidst the backdrop of a changing world.

‘Vermiglio’ Review: A Sprawling Tapestry of Life in an Alpine Village During Wartime
Image
Like any system that operates along gendered lines, religious-based patriarchy works well so long as those under its control are content to be confined. For many, there’s a certain comfort that comes with limits and an adherence to duty—in, say, the mother taking care of the home, the father earning the keep, and the children understanding that a certain slavish devotion to obedience keeps them in their parents’ good favor.

Vermiglio’s images are keyed to the simplicity of that kind of domesticity. Here, children tend to the cows before the milk is warmed over the stove for breakfast. Cesare Graziadei (Tommaso Ragno), the titular village’s school teacher, reads the paper devotedly for news from the Italian front as his seven children play and do their daily chores, while his wife, Adele (Roberta Rovelli), dutifully—and, it seems, happily—goes about her duties at home with tender devotion.

Maura Delpero’s Secret to Casting the Women of ‘Vermiglio’: Find Actresses Who Love Chickens
Image
Maura Delpero’s lushly told, moving mountainside World War II epic “Vermiglio” kept a low profile at the 2024 Venice Film Festival as one of a handful of Italian films in the competition. To some’s surprise — only because most eyes were on quote-unquote buzzier films like “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” and “Queer” — this story of a repressed rural community upended by the arrival of a handsome stranger (Giuseppe De Domenico) won the Silver Lion prize, second only to the Golden Lion, from the jury led by Isabelle Huppert. Now, “Vermiglio” represents Italy in the 2025 Best International Feature Film Oscar race — and should land a spot on next week’s shortlist after nods from the Gothams and Golden Globes.

“I was happy when they nominated the [Venice] jury because of Isabelle, but also because of the other members,” Delpero told IndieWire of the filmmaker-heavy jury that included James Gray, Agnieszka Holland, Andrew Haigh,...

Hulu's Amanda Knox Series Gets Pushback From Local Government in Italy
Image
How many stories of Amanda Knox do we really need? At least one more, according to Hulu, whose new eight-part series Blue Moon has begun filming in Italy, sparking backlash from the residents of Perugia, where Meredith Kercher was found murdered back in 2007. A 20-year-old Knox and her then-lover, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted of killing Knox's roommate 17 years ago, and subsequently spent four years in an Italian prison before their release in 2011 due to shoddy police work. She was later acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court in 2015, and has since gone on to become an author and activist.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, residents of Perugia have shown up in full force to the production, displaying banners that read "Rispetto per Meredith," which translates to "Respect for Meredith." The dramatization stars Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies), and will air on Hulu next year, with Knox now 37 on board as an executive producer.

Amanda Knox Hulu Series Prompts Uproar While Filming in Perugia, the Italian City Where Meredith Kercher Was Murdered
Image
Hulu’s Amanda Knox series is causing an uproar in the Italian city of Perugia, where the show – executive produced by Knox herself – has been filming 17 years after the murder of Meredith Kercher.

The arrival of the show’s cast and crew last week in the university town, where Knox’s British roommate was found dead in their room on Nov. 2, 2007, has prompted angry locals to put up banners that read “Rispetto per Meredith” (“Respect for Meredith”). The outcry has led the city’s mayor, Vittoria Ferdinandi, to issue a letter of apology to Perugia citizens, which was published in Italian newspapers.

“We could have not authorized the filming of five scenes in Perugia,” the Perugia mayor said in the letter, “but they would have been filmed in any other town in our region.”

She continued: “We believed that allowing [the scenes] to be filmed here would provide us an element of...

Set in 1944, in Vermiglio, a remote mountain village. AFI Review: Vermiglio Paints a Lyrical Portrait of Desires Constrained by Catholicism
Image
Vermiglio is set in the eponymous alpine village during the waning days of WWII. Maura Delpero’s film, gorgeously shot by Leviathan cinematographer Mikhail Krichman, is a slow-moving fable that unfolds as a novelistic series of pastoral tableaus. The short chapters evoke Balzacian poetic realism and recall the sensual textures of last year’s The Taste of Things. But unlike that film, which exuded autumnal warmth and celebrated pleasure––therefore freedom––Vermiglio‘s stark, wintery beauty comes at the price of its characters’ desires. The painterly frames physically constrain subjects, especially women who suffer pointedly under the social restrictions of this time and place.

Its story meanders through the village but centers on a family of nine, especially the patriarch Cesare (Tommaso Ragno) and his daughters Lucia (Martina Scrinzi), Ada (Rachele Potrich), and Flavia (Anna Thaler). The central plot follows the courtship of Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a traumatized army deserter,...

Oscars 2025: Italy Backs WWII Drama ‘Vermiglio’ for International Feature Race
Image
Italy will send Maura Delpero’s World War 2 drama Vermiglio into the 2025 Oscar race for Best International Feature.

Vermiglio premiered at the Venice Film Festival last month, where it scooped up the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. Sideshow and Janus Films acquired domestic rights for the movie shortly after its North American premiere in Toronto.

Set in 1944 in the eponymous village of Vermiglio, high in the Italian Alps, the film follows a local family whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of a refugee soldier from the faraway conflict. As the world emerges from the tragedy and destruction of WW2, the family in Vermiglio faces its own crisis. The ensemble cast includes Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe De Domenico, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi, Orietta Notari, and Carlotta Gamba

A follow-up to Delpero’s well-received 2019 directorial debut Maternal, Vermiglio is loosely based on the director’s own family history. She produced the feature together with Carole Baraton,...

‘Vermiglio’ Review: Maura Delpero’s Personal Tale Of Wartime Infidelity In The Italian Alps – Venice Film Festival
Image
The setting for Maura Delpero’s second feature is a sleepy wartime village in the Italian Alps, but the languid nature of the film is so soporific it borders on anesthetizing; indeed when the credits finally roll, it might be worth checking yourself for scars and other signs of organ harvesting. Technically, it is a marvel of period filmmaking, an immersive view of la vida rustica so bursting with authenticity that it may inspire more enthusiastic viewers to put on a folk hat and get a job in a heritage museum working the spinning jenny. Others may not be so gripped by its drawn-out drama; box-office blockbuster material it is not.

‘Vermiglio’ Review: Sprawling Italian World War II Drama Engages and Impresses, but Never Rivets
Image
World War II is raging across Europe, but there’s no gunfire in the mountainous village of Vermiglio. There, life goes on much as it has for hundreds of years, albeit with some subtle adjustments, in Italian writer-director Maura Delpero’s considered if conventional second feature.

Inspired in part by the director’s own family history, Venice competitor Vermiglio tracks how global and local events shape the lives of the large Delpero family, a brood who have a fraction more status in the community because the clan patriarch Caesar (Tammaso Ragno) is the local schoolmaster. However, the arrival of Pietro (Giuseppe de Domenico), a Sicilian veteran who takes a shine to Caesar’s daughter Lucia (Martina Scrinzi), will have deep repercussions.

A superabundance of subplots create a certain torpor even though the film is only a scant two hours long. Still, the portrait of a nearly vanished rural way of life remains compelling,...

‘Vermiglio’ Review: A Grave and Gorgeous Hymn to Life and Death in a Midcentury Italian Alpine Village
Image
With head bowed, over clasped hands, Italian director Maura Delpero’s quietly breathtaking “Vermiglio” unfolds from tiny tactile details of furnishings and fabrics and the hide of a dairy cow, into a momentous vision of everyday rural existence in the high Italian Alps. Far away, the Second World War is ending — an earthshaking event felt here only in abstract ways, because there’s the real labor of community and family to be getting on with, to say nothing of the private work of finding your own path to tread beneath those towering peaks. To those who live on their slopes, the mountains must be the beginning and end of everything, the amen on every prayer.

It is winter and a sleeping household, with two or three to a bed, gradually stirs. The eldest daughter Lucia (Martina Scrinzi) milks the cow, dreamily resting her face, which she has apparently stolen from a Vermeer painting,...

‘Zero Zero Zero’ Star Giuseppe De Domenico Joins ‘Vermiglio, the Mountain Bride,’ First Images Debut (Exclusive)
Image
Maura Delpero’s second feature “Vermiglio, the Mountain Bride” – which is being presented at the Venice Production Bridge, the industry program of the Venice Film Festival, this week – has tapped Giuseppe De Domenico as its lead.

The Italian actor, known for “Zero Zero Zero” and Prime Video’s “Bang Bang Baby,” will play Pietro, a young soldier who in 1944 arrives in a small mountain village in Trentino, northern Italy.

As declared by the film’s tagline, change is around the corner: “Last year of World War II. In the Italian Alps, a single rifle shot ends a young woman’s innocence.”

“Maura saw many young actors and some of them were very good, but Giuseppe was able to stand out thanks to his subtle acting style. He understood what it meant to come back from a war,” says Francesca Andreoli, who produces for Italy’s Cinedora.

Roberta Rovelli in Maura Delpero’s “Vermiglio,...

Producer Lorenzo Mieli Breaks Down His Two New Genre Series, ‘Bang Bang Baby’ and ‘The King’
Image
Producer Lorenzo Mieli, who has brought to the screen top Italian TV series such as “The Young Pope” and “My Brilliant Friend,” is launching two new crime shows with innovative elements: “The King” and “Bang Bang Baby.”

Both stem from his bent to push boundaries of genre storytelling that is “borne from authenticity,” he says.

“The King,” which is Italy’s first prison drama, recently bowed positively in Italy on Comcast-owned Sky’s pay-tv service and also premiered internationally at the Series Mania fest.

The dark show stars Luca Zingaretti, best known as the titular character in Italy’s widely exported “Inspector Montalbano” series. He plays Bruno Testori the sometimes psychopathic director of a maximum security penitentiary located on an unspecified Italian border territory that is not subject to Italian law. There Testori, who is a mixture of good and evil, can apply his totally personal idea of justice.
