Afonso was born in the Algarve, Portugal, and moved to New York City as a kid with his mom, who was seeking the "American Dream." At the age of twenty, Afonso joined the U.S. Navy as a Culinary Specialist and enjoyed an honorable twelve-year career.
During his military service, he completed numerous tours around the world and was deployed to war as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF). After leaving the Navy, Afonso chose to return to school to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College - City University of New York. Afonso was a Screenwriting Fellow with Time Warner (WarnerMedia) and the Writers Guild Foundation.
Afonso is the author of "The Zebracorn: Adventures of Zizou and Friends," a children's book.
