Ads May Be the Future of Streaming. They Also Might Ruin the Whole Damn Thing
Image
At the June 1 National Association of Television Program Executives conference in Hollywood, a university professor asked what the TV executives would not. During a panel he moderated that promised to look “under the hood” of streaming, Jeffrey Cole, founder and director of the USC Annenberg School’s Center for the Digital Future, posed the question that has the power to reshape the golden age of television: “How do [streamers] work in this advertiser ecosystem where advertisers are afraid of offending and streaming content frequently offends?”

We all remember the joy of those initial ad-free Netflix experiences. Part of it came from watching shows that no longer contorted their beats to match commercial breaks; more essentially, the scripts didn’t self censor in fear of what advertisers might think — because there were no advertisers. Dominic West, Andrew Scott, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton Sign Letter Protesting Turkish Ban Of Lgbt Movie ‘Pride’
Dominic West
In an open letter, the filmmakers and cast behind 2014 Lgbt-themed comedy-drama Pride have said they “deplore” a recent ban on the movie in Turkey, which is cracking down on Lgbt events.

According to Reuters, authorities in the Turkish capital Ankara last week banned a screening of the BAFTA-winning film citing risks to public safety. The ban came before an Lgbt parade in Istanbul on Sunday was teargased by police. Authorities have forbidden the march in recent years.

Actors Dominic West, Andrew Scott, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton are among signatories of today’s open letter which expresses “unshakeable solidarity and support for Lgbt+ people in Turkey.”

“We are disturbed by reports of the growing repression of the Lgbt+ community in Turkey culminating in the recent ban of the annual Pride parade and police violence against those who courageously defied the ban,” says the letter.

“Reports that the Ankara authorities also...

Bill Nighy, Dominic West and ‘Pride’ Team Condemn Turkish Screening Ban
Bill Nighy
Several of the talent and team behind “Pride” have said they deplore the decision to ban a screening of their 2014 movie by authorities in Ankara, Turkey’s capital and second-largest city. In an open letter they condemned the ban and a crack down on the Istanbul Pride march. They called upon officials “to condemn the repressive actions of the Turkish authorities.”

The 22 signatories of the letter included director Matthew Warchus, and several actors who starred in the British-produced film such as Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, and Dominic West. The activists that inspired the picture also signed.

“As members of the creative team which produced the 2014 film ‘Pride,’ and activists portrayed in that film, we are disturbed by reports of the growing repression of the Lgbt+ community in Turkey culminating in the recent ban of the annual Pride parade and police violence against those who courageously defied the ban,” the letter said.
