Netflix has commenced production on a series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s seminal Australian novel “My Brilliant Career,” with filming underway at Adelaide Studios and various South Australian locations.

The streaming giant is partnering with Jungle Entertainment on the period drama, which marks a fresh take on Franklin’s 1901 coming-of-age tale that captured the aspirations of young Australian women seeking independence and self-determination.

Set in rural Australia at the turn of the 20th century, the series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a spirited and ambitious young woman who dreams of literary fame and refuses to conform to the limited expectations placed upon women of her era. Born into a struggling farming family, Sybylla must navigate the constraints of her social circumstances while pursuing her artistic ambitions and grappling with questions of love, duty, and personal fulfillment. Her journey becomes a bold assertion of female independence in a society that offers few options beyond marriage and motherhood.

Netflix will adapt Miles Franklin’s 1901 Australian novel “My Brilliant Career” into a series.

The story follows Sybylla Melvyn, an ambitious girl growing up in rural Australia in the 1890s, who desires a grand career as a writer.

Philippa Northeast (Territory) will star as Sybylla, with Christopher Chung (Slow Horses) playing the role of Harry, Anna Chancellor (Outrageous) as Mrs Bossier, Genevieve O’Reilly (Andor) as Helen, and Kate Mulvany (Hunters) as Augusta.

Other cast members include Jake Dunn (The Ballad of Renegade Nell), Alexander England (Black Snow), Sherry-Lee Watson (Heartbreak High) and Miah Madden (Paper Dolls).

The novel was previously adapted into a feature film of the same name in 1979.

“Whenever I work, I’m like, ‘This will be the last time you do that,'” Jake Dunn laughs. “I just can’t believe it.”

His candid disbelief is no surprise when the Nottingham-born star, fresh out of drama school, went straight into filming a Sally Wainwright show. Dunn might be best known to viewers as Thomas in Renegade Nell, Disney+‘s fantasy adventure penned by the Happy Valley creator, which was canceled after one season last year.

“It does give you an understanding,” Dunn continues, “of when something is fizzing and exciting versus when something maybe doesn’t have that same impact on first read.” The 25-year-old would know better than a lot of people — he’s also worked on Jack Rook’s Big Boys, Nick Hamm’s historical epic William Tell and now turns to the BBC Three’s millennial coming-of-age drama based on the memoir by transgender journalist Paris Lees.

Bridgerton Season 1 promised a diverse, dazzling ballroom, but somehow confused that with tossing one chubby girl into a pile of hideous dresses. Exclusive: The BBC has revealed the cast and first-look images of What It Feels Like For A Girl, the adaptation of the memoir by transgender trailblazer Paris Lees.

The eight-part series will land on BBC3 and iPlayer later this year, featuring a cast led by Ellis Howard (Catherine the Great) who plays Byron, a working-class school kid who escapes a small town for Nottingham and discovers more than just the hedonistic world of the noughties clubbing scene.

Having established herself at the BBC with the police procedural “Happy Valley” and the crossdressing costume drama “Gentleman Jack,” screenwriter-turned-showrunner Sally Wainwright has followed countless creatives and taken the Disney shilling to initiate her latest project. Apple TV+ will continue its intergalactic expansion: the streamer has announced a Season 3 renewal for its global hit “Invasion.”

The sci-fi drama series, which debuted in October 2021, follows an alien invasion of Earth through different perspectives around the world, following the events as they unfold in real-time through the eyes of five ordinary people struggling to make sense of the chaos happening before them.

Netflix has released the trailer for the second and final half of “The Crown” Season 6, concluding the reign of the award-winning period drama.

Part 2 of the final season, which premiered its first four episodes on Nov. 16, will pick up in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death as Queen Elizabeth (played by Imelda Staunton) must reflect on her life and legacy and pave the way for her successors, Charles and William.

The first look images of “William Tell,” the epic story of the crossbow-wielding warrior, have been released. The feature film is in its last week of principal photography in Italy. Beta Cinema is representing international sales rights with WME Independent handling North American rights.

Nick Hamm directs, based on his screenplay, adapted from Friedrich Schiller’s play. Hamm’s credits include “Driven,” which was selected as the closing film at the Venice Film Festival 2018 and released by Universal; “Gigi & Nate” (2022); the Netflix series “White Lines” (2020); and “The Journey,” which premiered at Venice and Toronto in 2016.

Claes Bang has signed on to star in Nick Hamm’s period action film William Tell, playing the legendary Swiss marksman.

The Danish actor, star of Ruben Östlund’s 2017 Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Square, Sharon Horgan’s Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ series Bad Sisters and the baddie in Robert Eggers’ The Northman, will be joined by an ensemble cast, including Connor Swindells (Barbie), Ellie Bamber (Willow), Golshifteh Farahani (Extraction), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Rafe Spall (The Big Short), Emily Beecham (Little Joe), Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones, The Two Popes) and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Sexy Beast).

Beta Cinema and the UK’s Free Turn Films and Tempo Productions have officially announced Nick Hamm’s epic drama William Tell, as its under-the-radar shoot enters its final week in Italy.

The partners have unveiled a first-look image of Claes Bang in the role of the legendary crossbow-wielding warrior (scroll down to check it out).

Bang is joined in the cast by Connor Swindells, Ellie Bamber, Golshifteh Farahani, Jonah Hauer-King, Rafe Spall, Emily Beecham, Jonathan Pryce and Oscar winner Ben Kingsley.

“As a filmmaker I couldn’t ask for a more exceptional cast to bring this story to life,” said Hamm.

Beta Cinema, which represents worldwide sales rights while WME Independent handles domestic rights, will debut a first sales teaser to buyers at the AFM next week.
