Julián Ortega, who appeared in Netflix’s hit Spanish series “Elite,” died Aug. 25 after going into cardiac arrest while visiting Zahora Beach in Barbate, Spain, according to local outlets. He was 41.

Spain’s Union de Actores y Actrices posted an obituary for Ortega on Monday.

While initial reports suggested the Spanish actor had drowned, authorities later said he went into cardiac arrest while on the shore. After paramedics attempted to revive him for several minutes, Ortega was pronounced dead on the scene.

Ortega played the manager of “La Cabana” restaurant in the Spanish drama series “Elite,” appearing in several episodes during the show’s first season. “Elite” would run for eight seasons from 2018-2024, with its last episode airing on July 26.

The series follows the aftermath of Skynet, an AI being, gaining consciousness and waging its war against humanity in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It becomes self-aware on Aug. 29, 1997, after which a war rages on for decades.

“Terminator Zero” is set in 2022 and follows a soldier, Eiko (Rosario Dawson), who is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She journeys back to 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is working on another AI system, Kokono (Sonoya Mizuno) to compete with Skynet. Although it exists in the Terminator universe, it centers entirely around new characters.

Inspired by the award-winning documentary of the same name, Midnight Family follows Marigaby Tamayo (Renata Vaca), an ambitious and gifted medical student by day, who spends her nights saving lives throughout a sprawling, contrasted and fascinating Mexico City aboard her family’s privately owned ambulance. One of the biggest aspects of the teen drama is the culture clash between those with scholarships and the ones who pay to go to the school. The fictional high school of Las Encinas continues to be a playground for murderous mischief as the Spanish teen drama Elite made its return to Netflix on Oct. 20. Now in its seventh season, the series has added new characters to the salacious mix — Brazilian singer Anitta being among them — and brought back a member of the original ensemble cast, Omar Ayuso, who starred as Omar Shanaa from seasons one through five.

“One day by chance, we were on a train, and I asked him if he would be willing to come back,” says screenwriter, director and producer Carlos Montero, who created the series with Darío Madrona. “We gave him a protagonist role and we felt in debt to Omar because he always pulled out all the stops with our show. We love his character very much and we wanted to give him the importance we think he deserved.”

Elite is headed back to school — sans several cast members! — later this fall, when Season 6 premieres on Friday, Nov. 18, Netflix announced on Monday via the above video.

With Elite's sadistic track record of killing off main characters, I shouldn't have been surprised by this season's fatal blow, but it floored me, so much so that I'm not sure it was fatal, after all. Bodybag, or it didn't happen, right?

I have two theories: Samuel is dead, the cliffhanger cleverly employed to compel us to watch Season 6 (not that we wouldn't anyway) or Samuel is on the brink of death, will live, and will leave Las Encinas for good, Itzan Escamilla exiting the show. 

The latter would be preferable.

Samuel has gone through far too much to die poolside of a head injury. However, that manner of death is eerily similar to that of his Season 1 lover Marina, so it could be a full-circle closure of his storyline.

Elite Season 5 is right around the corner. Apple TV+ has landed Midnight Family from Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín’s Chilean company Fabula and the UK’s Fremantle which marks the platform’s first all Spanish-language Original series.

Apple TV+ has set its first-ever all Spanish-language series Midnight Family from Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín. Cast includes Academy Award nominee Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Joaquín Cosío, and Óscar Jaenada.

Rounding out the ensemble are Renata Vaca (Dale Gas), Diego Calva, Itzan Escamilla (Élite), José María de Tavira (The Candidate), Dolores Heredia, Mariana Gómez (The Queen of Flow) and Sergio Bautista.

Season 5 of the popular Spanish teen drama “Élite” will debut April 8, Netflix announced Monday.

Set in the private, elite secondary school Las Encinas, “Élite” follows an ensemble cast of students that constantly find themselves involved with various murder and police investigations. When they’re not running into trouble with the law, the mixed group of working class and wealthy teenagers navigate intense relationship dramas and the heavy workload of their demanding institution.

Season 5 of “Élite” follows the students as they recover from the Season 4 finale, which saw Guzmán (Miguel Bernardeau) murder a man named Armando (Andrés Velencoso) and go on the run after his friends help cover it up. Changes are on the horizon for Netflix's hit Spanish drama Elite.

The streaming service on Monday revealed Elite Season 5 will launch on April 8.

This will be the first Elite content since December's Short Stories.

A teaser was also unveiled that shows the characters dancing the night away, and their reactions certainly suggest something is afoot.

Elite Season 4 waved goodbye to Miguel Bernardeau (Guzman) and Aron Piper (Ander), leaving Itzan Escamilla (Samuel) and Omar Ayuso (Omar) as the only original cast members remaining.

Claudia Salas (Rebe) and Georgina Amoros (Caye), who have been on the show since its second season, will be back.

Elite Season 4's new cast members Carla Diaz (Ari), Martina Cariddi (Mencia), Manu Rios (Patrick) Pol Granch (Phillipe), and Diego Martin (Benjamin) will all be back for Elite Season 5.

Valentina Zenere and Andre Lamoglia are set to play new cast members on Season 5, and they're both present in the new teaser.

Netflix is doubling down on Elite, which is set to become one of the streamer's longest-running series.

On Thursday, the service ordered Elite Season 6, well ahead of the still unscheduled Elite Season 5 premiere.

What's more, we're getting three holiday-themed episodes of the Spanish teen drama with new episodes of Elite: Short Stories set to air in December.

The renewal was a no-brainer. Elite has solidified itself as one of the streamer's most popular dramas.

The long-delayed fourth season of the private-school drama will land on the streaming service Friday, June 18.

An episode order has not been revealed, but it is expected to be in line with the previous three seasons, which spanned eight episodes apiece.

Netflix Spain’s popular YA series “Elite” season four will premiere on June 18 worldwide. Among the service’s most popular programs in any language, “Elite” stands among the few series, international or American, to surpass the three-season mark at the platform.

The U.S streaming giant first announced season four just about two months after season three launched on the streamer and was seen by more 20 million households. The cast, including Miguel Bernardeau and Claudia Salas, announced the pickup via a video from their homes in quarantine. In late February of this year, Season Five was commissioned by Netflix, and two new key castings announced in Valentina Zenere and André Lamoglia.

The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.

Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.

Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.

Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.

Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.

Just because Elite is returning for Season 4, don't expect every cast member to return. 

Netflix on Monday revealed the official cast for the fourth season of the Spanish drama series.

Six cast members revealed the renewal in a Twitter video, which was filmed virtually from each of the stars’ homes.

“I wish I could see your faces when you watch it, because you’re going to flip out,” Georgina Amorós, who plays Cayetana, tells fans of the fourth season.

“There are many new things going on you could never think of.”
