The UK’s Hurricane Films has joined as co-producer Natalia Koryncka-Gruz’s comedy drama Miss Kebab, the big winner at this Polish Days ,held in Wroclaw during the New Horizons International Film Festival this week.

Miss Kebab won the inaugural Wroclaw Feature Film Studio Award for production and postproduction services worth Pln 100,000.

Based on a true story about a Polish female teacher working in the UK with children from immigrant families, the screenplay was written by Koryncka-Gruz with Kamila Czul, the author of the eponymous novel published in Poland in 2018.

European producers platform Ace Producers has selected 18 producers for the latest edition of its Ace Producers’ Network programme, running in 2022 and 2023.

The 18 producers include Nadim Cheikhrouha of France’s Tanit Films, who will produce Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania’s next feature Mime. Cheikhrouha and Ben Hania secured an Oscar nomination for best international feature film last year for The Man Who Sold His Skin.

The intense relationship between a middle-aged tennis coach and his teenage daughter hits trouble when a bright young male player tags along

Lukasz Grzegorzek’s A Coach’s Daughter is an interestingly downbeat movie, veering away from the big scenes and obvious crises that other films with the same idea might have given you, and yet somehow serving them up in different forms. It’s about the intense and borderline inappropriate relationship between a middle-aged tennis coach, Maciej (Jacek Braciak) and his teenage daughter Wiktoria (Karolina Bruchnicka), who is a budding tennis star. He is driving her all over Poland, where they are competing in summer regional tournaments, and hoping for glory; they share hotel rooms and lounge around together in intimate states of undress like a couple, but appear utterly focused on Wiktoria’s training and fitness.

1.Male Producers: An Endangered Species?

If one part of the movie business is edging towards equality, at least at its art-skewed end, it’s world cinema indie production. Women just edge out men when it comes to the number of producers selected for 2019’s Match Me! 13 female producers play 12 men. They are also bring some of the most exciting and timely projects. Consistently now, films from a first clutch of major producing countries selected for artier festivals around the world may or may not be directed by men but are very often produced by women.

Polish Days takes place during the New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw.

New films by Bartosz Konopka, Jan Komasa and Leszek Dawid are among the line-up of 25 completed films, works in progress and projects to be presented at the sixth edition of the Polish Days (July 30 - August 1) during the New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland.

Konopka’s The Mute, which was presented as a work in progress at last year’s Polish Days, is among five completed films being shown in closed industry screenings to international sales agents, distributors, film funders and festival programmers.
