Charlie Polinger’s debut feature “The Plague,” which will have its world premiere in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, will be launched to buyers at the Cannes Film Market with UTA Independent Film Group and Cinetic co-selling the U.S. rights and AGC Intl. handling the rest of the world.
The film, written and directed by Polinger, stars Joel Edgerton and an ensemble of young newcomers including Everett Blunck, Kayo Martin and Kenny Rasmussen.
“The Plague” is the story of an anxious 12-year-old navigating the savage social order at an all-boys water polo summer camp. He is pulled into a cruel tradition targeting an outcast with an illness they call “The Plague,” but as the lines between game and reality blur, he fears the joke might be hiding something real.

Director Leigh Whannell gave the classic Universal Monsters a shot of modern life in 2020 with his thrilling new take on "The Invisible Man." In the aftermath of that success, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse set about reinventing another monster in the form of the Wolfman. Originally, Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") was set to star in "Wolf Man" that had director Cory Finley ("Bad Education") flirting with the director's chair before Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") came on board. Things changed a lot along the way, with Whannell ultimately settling into the director's chair. But why did Gosling drop out?
Gosling is still credited on "Wolf Man" as a producer, for what it's worth. Yet, he doesn't appear on screen. Instead, Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, the ill-fated man who becomes a werewolf. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend timed to the film's release, Whannell explained that the film didn't change a lot once Abbott took over.

The late 2000s was awash with true-crime miniseries, documentaries, and podcasts, a trend that continues today with the likes of Ryan Murphy's Monsters anthology series, which most recently covered the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez. And there's always been a steady stream of slasher movies available for those who want bloody entertainment without the real-life baggage but how many movies combine the two genres into one twistedly fun ride? Tyler MacIntyre's criminally overlooked 2017 teen slasher Tragedy Girls does exactly that, turning our morbid obsession with real-life murders into the target of biting commentary while still reveling in the inherent fun of the slasher genre. Like Cory Finley's Thoroughbreds, Tragedy Girls puts a darkly humorous spin on following the journey of budding psychopaths, played here by Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand, while also adding in queer undertones and the exaggerated, pitch-black humor and violence of Heathers for...

Soon, Hugh Jackman will return as Logan in the highly-anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine," hopefully returning the Marvel Cinematic Universe to glory in the process. If there's one role the Aussie actor is known for, after all, it's Wolverine/Logan, and as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" taught us all, cramming your movie full of fan-favorite cameos is a recipe for box office success — though, in the latter's case, not necessarily for a good film.
Jackman has spoken about how he saved "Deadpool 3" with a phone call to star Ryan Reynolds, on which he expressed his desire to appear in the movie, prompting the literal "ka-ching" sound in the minds of Reynolds and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. However, even Feige advised Jackman against returning as Wolverine, mainly due to his historic run in the various X-Men films and James Mangold's almost...

With Deadpool & Wolverine on the horizon, Hugh Jackman is all the hype as he makes an epic comeback in superhero gear, yet again. But as much as X-Men may have helped the Australian actor reach the apogee of his career, the Adamantium-clawed savior is by no means his only remarkable role.
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017) | 20th Century Studios
Jackman has quite the knack for versatility; he’s played a distraught father on-screen, depicted the famed monster hunter Van Helsing, and even tried his hand at becoming the greatest showman (pun very much intended). Contrary to popular belief, however, the quintessential good-guy roles are not the only ones within his range, copious as his repertoire may be with such characters.
Believe it or not, Hugh Jackman can be one heck of a bad guy too. Perhaps even better than he is as the good guy.

Anya Taylor Joy fans rejoice this week as she returns to the big screen as young Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, after a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in Dune: Part 2 earlier this year. Ever since The Queen's Gambit skyrocketed her into global fame in 2020, the actress has been everywhere, but long before she was fake shaving her head on camera in the Mad Max prequel, she teamed up with House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke in the dark comedy thriller Thoroughbreds. Written and directed by Cory Finley, this 2017 film follows upper-crust Connecticut teens Lily (Taylor-Joy) and Amanda (Cooke) as they rekindle their friendship and plot to kill Lily's stepfather Mark (Paul Sparks). Upon its release, Thoroughbreds earned comparisons to the 1988 black comedy Heathers. Thoroughbreds works best as a character study of two teenage girls who are seemingly opposites but have more in common than they realize. Before they...

Asante Blackk is one of the youngest Primetime Emmy Award nominees of all time, having been recognized for his critically celebrated portrayal of 14-year-old Kevin Richardson in the Netflix series When They See Us. Also nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award, Blackk seems to be choosing his acting roles rather wisely. No fluff. Impactful. Award potential. And, time after time, stereotype defying.
A series regular from seasons four through six on This Is Us, Blackk also recently starred in Cory Finley’s Landscape with Invisible Hand and Natalie Morales' Plan B, which premiered at Sundance 2023. With his signature magnetic eyes and matter-of-fact powerful command of every scene he contributes his immense talent to, now add writer/director Aristotle Torres’ debut feature Story Ave to Blackk’s growing list of poignant work. Also a product of Sundance’s Directors Lab, Story Ave, which was produced by Torres along with Jamie Foxx.

‘Landscape With Invisible Hand’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Does Adam Reject The Vuvvs’ Offer?
T. Anderson’s 2017 novel of the same name flaunts a far more eerie and existentially charged makeover in Cory Finley’s third feature, Landscape With Invisible Hand. Yet, barring the jabs that do land and heighten the claustrophobic confines of a dystopia people have fallen victim to, Landscape With Invisible Hand is exasperatingly disconnected from the issues it’s a supposed mouthpiece for. The barbed wire separating the lives of the deprived from the land of comfortable survival threaten to lacerate the soft adolescence of two teens. Unfortunately, even though they bleed, the spikes of the totalitarian crisis in the film aren’t quite sharp enough to strike beyond the screen’s limitations. In any case, since we’re here and we’ve got the time on our hands, let’s take a stroll through the dreary terrains of a world taken over by extreme pragmatism.

Adam (Asante Blackk) is a young artist living under the near-future rule of the Vuvv, an odd-looking race of space conquerors whose latest plunder is earth. They assimilate humans through a wearable device that pumps their message into the brain. When Adam meets Chloe (Kylie Rogers), their courtship morphs into a popular social media event that the Vuvv ardently watch. The income derived from these views help both their families, including Adam’s mother Beth (Tiffany Haddish), but at what price? And when will the boot of their new leaders reach their necks?

Every now and then a film comes along that manages to reinvigorate a genre and causes filmmakers to reevaluate exactly what a film is supposed to pass along to an audience. With the new science fiction piece called Landscape with Invisible Hand, filmmaker Cory Finley has done just that – created a genre piece that transcends the genre to become great art.
Several years into the occupation of Earth by aliens called the Vuvv – which initially held the promise of prosperity for all and marvelous technological advances, that didn’t exactly pan out – humanity has grown complacent and, in many ways, stagnant. One thing the Vuvv are fascinated with is the human capacity to love and will pay interested humans to allow them to experience it via lives-tream broadcasts that are the main form of entertainment for the creatures.
These broadcasts can lead to steady incomes and better lives for the humans that mount successful ones.

You don’t see too many science fiction comedy-dramas heading into movie theaters these days – or any days, quite frankly – so that alone is cause to celebrate the arrival of “Landscape With Invisible Hand,” the odd title of an intriguing film that opens today (Friday) in limited release, starring a cast of mostly unknowns with the exception of Tiffany Haddish in a prime co-starring role. It’s written and directed by Cory Finley, who directed the Emmy-winning 2020 made-for-tv movie “Bad Education” that starred Hugh Jackman. And its composer is Michael Abels, a Pulitzer Prize winner and two-time Emmy nominee whose genre-defying scores include the Jordan Peele horror trio “Get Out,” “Us” and “Nope.”

How bold must we be in our quest to stay true to ourselves, and what would we do to keep our families intact? These are but two of the thought-provoking themes that writer/director Cory Finley explores to winning ends in Landscape with Invisible Hand, which lands in theaters Friday, Aug. 18. They are two ideologies that sometimes work in direct conflict with each other. But what if they didn’t have to? Landscape with Invisible Hand is an offbeat comedy with heavy doses of spunk and sweetness. It’s a daring picture for Finley, who takes the premise of aliens ruling Earth in the not-too-distant future as a backdrop to explore one family’s journey to keep it all together.

Filmmakers are given fewer opportunities to make creative passion projects outside of the standard audience expectations, resulting in directors like Chloé Zhao and Ryan Coogler turning to franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Only a select group of directors today can generate audience passion based on their name alone, with Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, and Edgar Wright emerging as some of the few. Cory Finley, the filmmaker behind Thoroughbreds and Bad Education, deserves to be considered among the great directors of his generation due to his ability to discover new talented performers and create films that provide dark commentary on emotional reckoning, wealth disparity, and public education.
The number of filmmakers working today that have the potential to last as long as the industry as Oliver Stone or Ridley Scott is dwindling, as directors are given less opportunities to make creative passion projects that fall outside the standard expectations of audiences.

Landscape With Invisible Hand is a unique alien film that explores the influence of aliens on human society and capitalism. The film's score, composed by Michael Abels, utilizes avant-garde harmony, theremin, vintage synths, strings, and other unique instruments to create a sense of the unknown. The score captures the hope of young love and budding creativity tempered by tragically low expectations in a low-fi sci-fi, impressionist style.
Landscape With Invisible Hand is a unique alien film that centers its story on two clashing families in a post-alien invasion world. The movie is based on a novel of the same name by award-winning author M.T. Anderson, which was first published in 2017; the film first premiered in January 2023 at the Sundance Film Festival. Landscape With Invisible Hand director Cory Finley was interested in adapting the novel due to its unique take on how aliens may influence human society and its commentary on capitalism.

The sci-fi comedy-drama Landscape with Invisible Hand comes from filmmaker Cory Finley (Bad Education). Based on author M. T. Anderson's 2017 novel of the same title, the movie follows the teenage couple Adam and Chloe. Set in an alternate near-future, Landscape with Invisible Hand takes place in a world where an alien species known as the Vuvv has taken over Earth. At first glance, the Vuvv's invasion is seen as a saving grace for the people of Earth due to their labor-saving technology and advanced medicine able to cure every illness imaginable. However, most humans struggle financially to survive with no jobs and therefore no way to pay for the aliens' miraculous offerings. Thus, Adam and Chloe hatch a plan: live-streaming their dates via a pay-per-view channel to the Vuvv, who are fascinated with the concept of love. There is, however, one glaring problem. With each passing episode, Adam and...

Plot: In the near future, aliens have taken over the earth, and the economy will be ruined. The upper-class lives in hovering sky domes while the working class toils on earth, trying to make ends meet in a world where virtually all industries have ceased to operate. In this impoverished future, a sensitive teen artist (Asante Blackk) navigates first love, the need to express himself creatively, and his family’s relationship with the occupying aliens.
Review: Landscape with Invisible Hand is unusual for an alien invasion story. Based on the book by M.T. Instead, the aliens superior technology and business acumen allowed them to make deals with the wealthiest, most influential humans, and now they have their hands (or flippers) in everything.

In what is poised to be a case of Warner Bros beating itself for the No. 1 spot at the box office this coming weekend, the studio’s new DC superhero title Blue Beetle is poised to halt Barbie‘s three-weekend streak with a $28M-$32M opening. Barbie, meanwhile, is looking at a $22M-$24M fifth weekend, -30%, per industry sources. Through Monday, the Greta Gerwig-directed Mattel doll feature counts $531.2M — the studio’s domestic top-grossing title ever.
As we told you, the Angel Manuel Soto-directed Blue Beetle is overindexing with Latino and Hispanic audiences, hence the hope is that there will be plenty of walk-up business. That was the case with Warners’ The Meg 2: The Trench, which hit a $30M start at the top of its projections two weekends ago. Blue Beetle crawls into 3,850 locations and will play in Imax theaters, which the pic gains in full from Oppenheimer.

Landscape With Invisible Hand, based on M.T. Anderson's novel, explores a post-alien invasion world where two families live together and monetize their teenage romance by livestreaming it for the Vuvv. Director Cory Finley aimed to preserve the tone of the book in the film adaptation, making changes to fit the visual medium while keeping the story's satirical and comedic edge intact. The film focuses on a young man coming of age in an economically unstable world, while also exploring themes of capitalism, colonialism, and the complexity of relationships.
Coming to theaters on August 18th, Landscape With Invisible Hand tells the story of two clashing families who agree to share space in a post-alien invasion world. What starts as a genuine romance between the teens in the house turns into a monetary ploy when Chloe comes up with the idea to live stream their relationship for the Vuvv. However, it...

Aliens are taking over all facets of life on Earth, including marriage, in the final trailer for Cory Finley's Landscape With Invisible Hand adaptation. The film based on M.T. Anderson's novel of the same name takes place in a dystopian future where the Vuvv have taken over the planet and brought with them labor-saving technology that has made most human work redundant, financially ruining many families. They also have a deep interest in human emotions and human culture which is why Tiffany Haddish is marrying one for a year.

As depicted in a new trailer, the upcoming Tiffany Haddish-starring film Landscape with Invisible Hand imagines a world in which an alien species called the Vuvv has taken over Earth and humans are just trying to get by. For Haddish’s Beth Campbell, that apparently means agreeing to take on one of the extraterrestrials as her “pretend husband” so it can be “immersed in the human culture.”
Thankfully for Haddish, her new alien spouse isn’t equipped for sex with humans, but her children understandably aren’t very happy about the situation. Her son Adam (Asante Blackk) responds to a request for a hug with disdain, saying, “That thing is not my dad.” And when Haddish says she believes that the Vuvv “have hearts,” Adam retorts, “I literally think they don’t have circulatory systems. Period.” Watch the trailer for the sci-fi comedy below.

"At some point it starts being domination." Indeed - and I wonder if that's where we are now with society? MGM has unveiled a final official trailer for the audacious sci-fi film Landscape with Invisible Hand, directed by Cory Finley (of Thoroughbreds and Bad Education previously). A rare kind of depth and sweetness permeates throughout the new film from director Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds), the sci-fi comedy Landscape with Invisible Hand. Set in 2030, the story chronicles two ambitious, well-meaning teenagers who create a risky plan to ensure their families' futures. That suggests trouble is afoot. And there is.
Earth has been occupied by an alien species whose bureaucratic ways and advanced technology — they pretty much think humans are one big reality show and AI has taken over— leaves many citizens unemployed and impoverished. Artistic teen Adam (Asante Blackk of When They See Us) wants to help his mother (Tiffany Haddish), so he agrees to have his “love story” with Chloe (Kylie Rogers of Beau Is Afraid and Yellowstone) tracked on a social media platform so that the aliens can toss him some cash. The dilemma? Adam and Chloe dig each other, but they’re not “in love.

Years into a benevolent alien occupation of Earth, the human race is still adjusting to the new world order and its quirky coffee table-sized overlords called the Vuvv. Their flashy advanced technology initially held promise for global prosperity, but rendered most human jobs – and steady income – obsolete. When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.

Love is a purely human emotion that can’t be faked — such is the theme at the center of the first trailer for Cory Finley’s “Landscape With Invisible Hands,” released Tuesday.
The film is based on the book by M.T. Charisma, star talent, and a notably humble personality: At just 26 years old, Anya Taylor-Joy seems to have it all. “The Queen’s Gambit” starlet has become the face of Viktor & Rolf, garnered an Emmy nomination, and won a Golden Globe award — all in just six short years after her first feature role. The Miami-born, Argentine-raised, and London-based international film star landed on the scene in 2015 with Robert Eggers’ directorial debut “The Witch.” The breakout role from the Sundance hit cemented Taylor-Joy’s striking screen presence, with IndieWire’s review calling her “standout” performance “exquisitely ominous and unequivocally haunting.”
Taylor-Joy quickly became an indie darling with subsequent films “Morgan” opposite Kate Mara, “Thoroughbreds” by writer-director Cory Finley, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “Glass.” In an interview with IndieWire, she lamented that she refuses to be typecast, but rather follows the “magic feeling” of reading the right part.

In screenwriter and director Cory Finley’s third feature, Landscape with Invisible Hand, the near-future Earth has been overtaken by an alien species. Rather, the governments have handed over control to the Vuvv – said alien species – in a transaction of sorts, as the Vuvv have essentially bought Earth and many humans now face poverty. Releasing sometime this year, this is the screenwriter-turned-director’s third feature film, and the second to premiere at Sundance after 2017’s Thoroughbreds starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke.

What would life on Earth look like in a future where humans are still very much alive but no longer in charge? Landscape With Invisible Hand — directed by Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds, Bad Education) and based on the 2017 young adult novel by M.T. Anderson — depicts a depressed, dryly humorous society crumbling away at a steady pace. Little aliens called “the Vuvv” have landed and torpedoed the economy, leaving most humans either underemployed or out of work entirely. The wealthy have already abandoned the planet to live “up there” with the aliens, while everyone still on Earth is left to forage for what’s left of the money, land and food. Instead of fearsome creatures with horrifying lasers and military might, the Vuvv are tiny bureaucrats with no empathy for the poverty their soulless business practices have created.

Aliens taking over Earth may sound like a concept that has been done before, but Landscape with Invisible Hand offers a new and refreshing angle. Written and directed by Cory Finley, who adapted M.T. Anderson’s novel of the same name, the sci-fi dramedy boasts great performances from This is Us’ Asante Blackk and Tiffany Haddish. While it isn’t the strongest film, Landscape with Invisible Hand is bold and fascinating enough to stand on its own merits.
Set in 2036, Landscape with Invisible Hand follows Adam (Blackk), a teen artist, and his family after aliens, called Vuvv, have taken over the planet. Adam’s mother (Haddish), formerly a lawyer, is barely getting by — jobs have been largely eradicated due to Vuvv technology, and her husband (William Jackson Harper) has disappeared to California in search of better opportunities. One travels to the Sundance Film Festival in the dead of winter for numerous reasons, chief of them being the promise of a front-row seat to confident debuts like Cory Finley’s delectably dark “Thoroughbreds.” Indeed, the playwright-turned-filmmaker demonstrated himself an original voice with his first cinematic outing in 2017, proving his promise with the equally sophisticated “Bad Education,” about a real-life public school embezzling scandal.
Marking Finley’s homecoming to Sundance, “Landscape with Invisible Hand” feels less like a return for the writer-director, and more like a swing-for-the-fences departure with mixed results. On the one hand, this impressively scoped science-fiction/satire blend with some old-school visual craft signals Finley’s natural aptitude for shepherding big Hollywood productions, being the largest scaled project of his still-ascendant career.
