A24's Highest-Grossing Horror Film With 94% Rt Score Becomes a Hit on Streaming 1 Year After Release
Streaming services give films a second chance at life. Whether it's popular, high-grossing titles, or poorly reviewed films, many users discover the titles online and love them.
The latest title to attract an audience is A24's Australian supernatural horror Talk to Me. The movie had a limited release in 2022, followed by a wide release the next year. Following its success both with the critics and in theaters, Talk to Me became a hit on Netflix, too, per Tudum.
For the week between Mar. 24 and 30, Talk to Me debuted in ninth place on the domestic charts. The movie is only available in the U.S., and followed titles like the newcomer The Life List, Gerard Butler's Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Despicable Me 4, the documentary The Twister: Caught in the Storm, Sony's Kraven the Hunter, M. I love it when a horror movie surprises me. There’s something intoxicating about a horror film that subverts expectations and goes to unexpected places. When filmmakers defy convention, their output becomes exponentially more immersive, making the viewing experience much more dynamic for the audience. Netflix just added a movie like that. A film that really caught me off guard and grabbed me by the throat. I’m talking about Michael and Danny Philippou’s breakout hit, Talk to Me.
The streamer just added the film to their catalog on March 28, 2025, and it’s already cracked the top ten, landing at #5 overall. It’s also currently the most-watched horror film on Netflix.
Danny and Michael Philippou came to prominence with their YouTube channel RackaRacka. The twin brothers gained notoriety and built their follower count by posting catchy, funny horror shorts. The success of their channel paved the way for their...

“You’re not yourself when you’re high.” One could almost write it off as a Reagan-era “War on Drugs” cliché if it were not so painfully true. Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s debut feature film Talk To Me (2023) literalizes this saying to horrific effect in its riveting and strikingly original take on the demonic possession horror subgenre.
Talk to Me is reminiscent of It Follows in its depiction of isolated teens navigating all too adult horrors with little to no adult support in an uncanny yet psychologically familiar, if not literally accurate, depiction of adolescence. Featuring an effective ensemble cast, it focuses on the relationships between Mia (Sophie Wilde), her longtime friend Jade (Alexandra Jensen), Jade’s boyfriend and their mutual friend Daniel (Otis Dhanji), and Jade’s younger brother Riley (Joe Bird).
Mia, the protagonist and, ultimately, tragic figure of the film, is marked by loneliness and quiet desperation.

Along with the handful of television shows headed to Paramount+ next month, the streaming service also has a solid line-up of films arriving. Known for its humorous commercials riddled with various television and film characters, the platform understands how to market itself. Although relatively new compared to veterans like Hulu and Netflix, it manages to hold its own within the world of streaming.
Along with its slew of television series headed to Paramount+ next month, the streaming service also has a solid line-up of films arriving. Together with two comedic dramas, there’s an action film slated for release on the streaming service in the coming weeks. Also, with two horror films heading to the platform, fans of the spooky season won’t have to wait until October to enjoy something scary. While there might not be a range of genres available next month, there’s certainly plenty subscribers will find worth watching.

Adelaide teens take an occult party game too far in this terrific debut from Australian YouTube celebrities (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou. Inventive, creepy and confidently directed, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
After a deeply disturbing prologue, shot in an impressive single take, the film centres on Mia (Sophie Wilde), who’s grown more and more distant from her father (Marcus Johnson) since the traumatic loss of her mother, two years previously. Accordingly, Mia spends most of her time at her best friend Jade’s (Alexandra Jensen) house, which is slightly awkward, because Jade is dating Mia’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel (Otis Dhanji).

Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou explained why the first prequel clips they'd initially released ahead of the film’s theatrical release were ultimately removed online.
Following the surprise box office success of Talk to Me, it was confirmed that the Philippou brothers have already filmed a prequel to their hit horror thriller, inspired by the film’s opening scene. This led to the assumption that the rising filmmaking duo might release another feature-length movie besides the upcoming sequel. However, this might not be the case after all. Speaking with Empire Magazine, the Philippou brothers clarified that their completed Talk to Me prequel is actually "not a movie, by any stretch," instead it’s a "series of clips following Duckett's story that were designed to be uploaded anonymously online."

A24 is going all in on a new horror franchise as the studio is officially developing a sequel to this summer's sleeper hit "Talk to Me." Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the film hit theaters less than two weeks ago against rave reviews from the festival circuit earlier this year. Audiences responded kindly and the studio wasted zero time in giving the sequel the go-ahead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the follow-up is aptly titled "Talk 2 Me." Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman are set to pen the screenplay, while the Philippou brothers will once again return to the director's chair. Plot details remain under wraps at this time. The first movie focuses on a group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. They become hooked on the new thrill of it all until one of them goes too far and unleashes malicious supernatural forces.

In addition to announcing the sequel, A24 shared the film’s title card, revealing that, in the great tradition of “2 Fast 2 Furious” and “Scre4m,” the film will be titled “Talk 2 Me.”
The Philippous, two brothers best known for their popular horror comedy Youtube Channel RackaRacka, are set to return to direct the sequel. Danny Philippou will also reunite with Bill Hinzman, who he wrote the first film with, to work on the screenplay for the followup. Samantha Jennings and...

The movie has created a studio record for A24, earning the second-biggest weekend ever.

The movie's $10 million opening is the second-highest ever for A24, after Hereditary, directed by Ari Aster and starring Toni Collette, opened at $13.6 million in 2018. Talk to Me's achievement is even more impressive, considering the relatively unknown cast and the post-pandemic box office. It is also generally considered as a rare feat for indie films to cross $10 million in a single weekend.

In a year dominated by blockbusters such as Barbie and Oppenheimer, it would have been easy to overlook smaller cinematic ventures. Yet, amidst this crowded theater landscape, the indie powerhouse A24 has quietly but surely made waves with their new horror offering, Talk to Me. The cinematic chatter might be focused on more prominent titles, but this spine-chilling spectacle is currently hogging the limelight, and rightly so.
Gaining momentum at Sundance usually means a film has deeply connected with audiences. Talk to Me is one such film. The directing duo behind the surprise horror hit Talk to Me, Danny and Michael Philippou, already have ideas in mind for a sequel. In fact, they’re more than ideas, with the filmmakers revealing they have already written scenes should Talk to Me spawn a follow-up. Speaking with GamesRadar+, Danny Philippou offered details of the “extensive” bible that the pair have put together for the supernatural world of Talk to Me.
"When we were writing the first film, we couldn't help but write scenes for a sequel as well. Our bible on the movie is so extensive. We've got this massive mythology bible where we broke down every single spirit that the kids connected with, every single rule, every single part of the hand, and the history behind it. So I think there's so much to explore.”

In the new paranormal pop culture film Talk To Me, which opens on July 28, a group of Australian teens discover a new kind of high in communing with the dead, by briefly allowing possession of their bodies via an embalmed hand of mysterious origin that serves as a gateway. There are rules to be followed with the spirit communication, and when those are broken, the character Mia (Sophie Wilde) learns the dead are not content with a temporary pass into the realm of the living.
Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the A24 film shifts the teen horror setting from slumber parties filled with Blood Mary dares and Ouija board dabbling to high school parties filled with booze, and, well, boos—all documented by social media. Meanwhile the film examines the lingering wound that is Mia’s grief over her mother’s lethal overdose,...

You may relate to this: it’s Friday night, and you get invited to a party. All of your friends are laughing, possibly having a drink or two, smoking some weed, and engaging in general revelry. Then, just as the night seems like it can’t get any better, someone pulls out a severed hand and says, “You’ve got to try this.”
That’s roughly the age-old setup – with a morbid twist – at the heart of Talk To Me, the feature directorial debut of brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, which finds U.S. distribution in the keen-eyed tastemakers at A24.

Editors note: This review was originally published January 22 after the the movie’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It opens in theaters Friday.
Children shouldn’t play with dead things: not just the title of a low-budget American horror from 1972 but words to live by, especially in this unnerving and highly effective Midnight entry from Australia. But though it employs some familiar tropes — high-schoolers dabble in the occult and soon begin to wish they hadn’t — Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou’s film Talk to Me does attempt to do something new with an old idea, for one thing making the crossing of infernal thresholds seem like an awful lot of fun.
From the start, the most striking thing is that there’s not much in the way of a preamble and very little lip service to genre traditions. The Philippous are respectful enough of modern audiences to...

Director duo/brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s debut feature is a well-produced Australian, A24 possession horror with interesting, likeable characters, excellent performances and well woven scares. Sadly Talk to Me stumbles in the latter half due to drawn-out, superfluous scenes and wonky plotting.
On the anniversary of her mother’s death, twenty-something Mia (Sophie Wilde) attends a party with her friend Jade (Alexandra Jensen) and plays a game that involves grasping the embalmed hand of a dead psychic and asking it to talk to her. After conversing with a spirit conjured by the hand, the event leads to an accident involving Jade’s younger brother, Riley (Joe Bird). Mia then sets off to seek out the secrets of the severed limb so she can save Riley and reconnect with the spirit of her late mother.

Loss and grief bring a lot of changes to one's life, more than it may initially appear. It's a personal, grim reminder of the final destination that awaits us all, a full-on wake-up call that it can and will happen to you. As much as a death by natural causes hangs over every human being, the specter of unnatural death looms even larger; not just for reasons of unfairness, but because it implies an additional amount of pain and suffering coming along with it.
Thus, it's a natural impulse for most people (and especially young people) to not so much confront their fears but to dismiss, belittle and mock them, in the hopes that they'll be sufficiently diminished. In YouTube stars Danny and Michael Philippou's debut feature, "Talk to Me," the world of the dead is treated as something to be laughed at,...

Chicago – True unforgettable scares in a horror film are few and far between, despite many attempts. The unsettling air of the new film “Talk to Me” is lingering, as created by two Australian brothers and YouTube sensations, Danny & Michael Philippou. Their channel RackaRacka gave them the opportunity to make their debut film.
Australian teens Mia (Sophie Wilde), brother/sister Riley (Joe Bird) and Jade (Alexandra Jensen) gather with other friends to participate in a bizarre “lights out” ritual. A plastered mummy hand is grasped by an individual as they intone “talk to me,” and when a spirit appears they entreat them to enter their bodies. Remarkably, it works differently for Mia, Jade and especially Riley, with unintended consequences. When the effects prove not to wear off, trouble from the inhabitants of the afterlife soon follow. The film was co-directed by Danny (also co-writer) and Michael Philippou in their feature film debut.

Horror movies have a tendency to get repetitive, and not just because of sequels designed to cash in and strip mine a premise. Hollywood is a reactionary place, with producers rushing to duplicate the success of others rather than run the risk of — gasp — trying something new. Every now and again, however, the horror genre gets a much-needed shot of adrenaline that jump starts imaginations and sends viewers flocking to the cinema.
Get out your hypodermics, kids.
Talk to Me, the debut feature from writer/directors Danny and Michael Philippou, plunges the adrenaline syringe deep into the arm of viewers, leaves it there, and proceeds to spend the ensuing 95 minutes keeping them frazzled. We never thought we would write such high praise for a directing duo that began its career on YouTube. Nonetheless, the Brothers Philippou have crafted one of the most thrilling horror films in recent memory, and done so on a minimal budget.

A24’s full trailer for Talk to Me confirms that if you’re ever offered a chance to touch a severed hand, don’t do it. Just say no to the hand, or else there’s a possibility you’ll lose control of your soul.
The R-rated horror film marks the directorial debut of popular YouTubers Danny and Michael Philippou and stars Sophie Wilde, Miranda Otto, and Alexandra Jensen. Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Zoe Terakes, and Chris Alosi also star.
Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman wrote the screenplay, and Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton serve as producers.
The Philippou’s first feature film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won over critics. It currently sits at 97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with Screen Rant’s Mae Abdulbaki describing it as not “simply concerned with jump scares, and its horror settles deep into the bones, a disquiet that ultimately rattles the nerves.

As audiences have learned through many horror films, the results are never pretty when conjuring games go wrong. A24 has unveiled the second trailer for its new supernatural horror Talk to Me, which explores the repercussions of a party game to contact spirits.
In her film debut, newcomer Sophie Wilde portrays Mia, a woman who has recently lost her mom. At a party, Mia plays a game where she must touch an embalmed hand and speak the words "talk to me" to allow a spirit to enter her body. The caveat is that this possession must be timed, and if it goes on for longer than 90 seconds, "they'll want to stay." Check out the new trailer below:

"I let you in... I let you in..." A24 has debuted a second official trailer for the indie horror favorite Talk to Me, made by the Australian brothers known as "RackaRacka" on YouTube. It played to rave reviews at both the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals this year, after first premiering in Australia late last year. This is a much better trailer, setting up what should be one of the big horror hits of the year. When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new "thrill," until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. The film stars Sophie Wilde as Mia, Joe Bird as Riley, plus Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Marcus Johnson, Alexandria Steffensen, Zoe Terakes, and Chris Alosio. I'm a big fan of this one, and I'm waiting for it to open...

“Talk to Me” is the latest A24 horror movie, and a brand new trailer has arrived.
It will soon join a collection of blood-curdling modern-day classics like “Midsommar,” “The Witch” and “X.” And judging by the trailer (which you can watch above), it will fit in nicely. Or maybe it’ll fit in horribly? You know what we mean.
The movie follows a young girl (Sophie Wilde), who recently lost her mother, and is coaxed into playing a game with an embalmed hand that supposedly opens up a door to the other side. Of course, things quickly escalate out of control, unleashing a demonic force (demonic forces are never as amenable as you’d think). Is this the Australian version of Ouija? Or something else entirely? They’re a hearty bunch, we can see them looking for an even greater thrill, like shaking hands with the devil. Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen,...
