Justin Roiland Dropped by 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals
Dan Stevens, Mary Mack, Thomas Middleditch, and Sean Giambrone in Solar Opposites (2020)
20th Television Animation and Hulu Originals have joined Adult Swim in cutting ties with “Rick and Morty” and “Solar Opposites” co-creator and “Koala Man” executive producer Justin Roiland.

The move comes nearly two weeks after Roiland was charged with felony domestic violence related to an incident that first surfaced in a January 2020 criminal complaint.

“We have ended our association with Justin Roiland,” a spokesperson for Hulu Originals and 20th TV Animation told TheWrap in a statement.

“Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” will continue without Roiland’s involvement.

An Australian court has found YouTube guilty of distributing defamatory content. Will the platform pay its fine?
Image
In the U.S., a recent Supreme Court decision has impeded the Texas Legislature's plan to enact a controversial law that would ban social media censorship. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, the battle over what you can or can't say on social media is moving in a different direction. An Australian court has ordered Google to pay politician John Barilaro A715,000 after YouTube decided not to remove videos that allegedly defamed the former Deputy Premier of New South Wales.

The inflammatory videos came from Jordan Shanks, a New South Wales-based creator who reaches more than 620,000 subscribers on his friendlyjordies YouTube channel. Shanks often calls out Australian politicians, and in 2020, he went after Barilaro after disagreeing with the then-Deputy Premier's policies. Among other slights, Shanks poked fun at Barilaro's Italian heritage. He spoke in an exaggerated accent and said the politician was "powered by spaghetti."

Image
The 24th Annual Reel Black Men Short Film Festival kicks off on Saturday with films from Charles Burnett, David M. Massey, and 19 other Black filmmakers. The festival, which will be held virtually through August 22, is put on each year by the Black Hollywood Education Resource Center. The 21 films being screened came from 500 semifinalists that were culled from 1,700 entries submitted from across the globe.

This year’s line-up is “truly outstanding,” said John Forbes, Bherc’s executive director. “They are great stories that include drama, horror, romantic comedy, documentary, and sci-fi. The content is diverse and tells both historical and contemporary, fictional and non-fictional stories. They are compelling in many cases, including the issue of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Sandra Evers-Manly, president of the Bherc, is a former president of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood branch of the NAACP, and the cousin of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Last year, she became...
