- He was the 26th President of Brazil (1964-1967), the first of the Brazilian military dictatorship following the 1964 coup d'état.
- The plane crash that resulted in his death on 18 July, 1967, isn't completely explained, leading to many theories. The military records inform that his plane hit a small jet on the way back to the capital but the most valid theory is that another military plane hit Castelo Branco's aircraft mid-air on purpose since the current administration weren't too pleased with his soft politics against enemies of the government, which later was transformed into a more radical leadership.
