It Lives Inside Ending Explanation
Image
Hollywood doubled down on demonic possession in 2023, tapping into the genre's lasting appeal with films like Evil Dead Rise. It Lives Inside takes a unique twist on the possession sub-genre, blending Hindu traditions and supernatural battles for Samidha's soul. The film's bittersweet ending leaves Samidha as the vessel for the malevolent demon, setting up a potential sequel with a cold, cruel twist.

The following contains spoilers for It Lives Inside.

Throughout 2023, Hollywood leaned into the demonic possession genre harder than usual. Horror fans reveled in Russell Crowe's Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope's Exorcist, not to mention, Evil Dead Rise, which terrified audiences with the latest generation of Deadites. These films reinforced the idea that this niche sub-genre is one studios think audiences will always flock to, and rightfully so. Such films usually do well at the box office, despite critics usually panning their ilk as a rule.

The True Story Behind It Lives Inside's Demon
Image
It Lives Inside brings terror to a new level using the Pishacha, introducing Western audiences to a horror story from another culture. The Pishacha is a physical manifestation of evil in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. It Lives Inside stays true to key components of the legend, depicting it as a hunched-over creature with iconic bulging eyes.

Demons are a common sight for horror movie protagonists, but the recent release of It Lives Inside brings their supernatural power to a new level. Focused on a Hindu creation, a Pishacha terrorizes the town and butchers several people in the process. In true horror fashion, the monster is rarely seen through most of the film, but once it makes its debut, the tone shifts. But while the Pishacha is depicted as a horrifying creature from legend, the Hindu version is far more terrifying.

It Lives Inside is the debut film of director Bishal Dutta...

It Lives Inside: Megan Suri horror film reaches DVD in November
Megan Suri in Inside (2023)
The supernatural horror film It Lives Inside, which stars Megan Suri of the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, didn’t draw in many viewers when it reached theatres last Friday. It had an opening weekend of $2.6 million and finished in seventh place on the top 10. Maybe it will do better when it reaches home video – and we can confirm that Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, will be giving the film a DVD release on November 7th. Copies are available for pre-order at This Link. We don’t have any information on a Blu-ray or 4K release at this time, but Amazon is also accepting pre-orders for the Prime Video digital release.

It’s a shame It Lives Inside didn’t have better box office, as it was good enough to earn an 8/10 review from JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols. That review can be read Here. The film...

It Lives Inside Director Bishal Dutta On Merging Teen Drama With Culturally-Inspired Horror
Image
It Lives Inside is a high school horror film that explores the challenges of cultural assimilation and the supernatural. Director Bishal Dutta drew inspiration from his own experiences as an Indian-American and incorporated elements of Indian folklore into the story. The movie strikes a balance between high school drama, cultural themes, and outright horror, providing a unique and refreshing viewing experience.

High school is tough enough for anybody, but when you throw in a complex story of immigration and cultural assimilation and mix in a murderous demonic entity derived from Indian folklore, that's when things really get wild. The new film, It Lives Inside, tackles this exact scenario. The feature directorial debut of Bishal Dutta, It Lives Inside follows an Indian-American high school girl, Sam (Megan Suri), who has effectively abandoned her Indian heritage in favor of fitting in with the high school crowd. In the process, she leaves behind her former best friend,...

It Lives Inside Review: Megan Suri Is Great In Interesting But Lackluster Horror
Image
It Lives Inside weaves the immigrant experience and Hindu mythology into its horror narrative, but falls short in delivering real scares. The mother-daughter relationship in the film provides tension and depth, exploring the impact of the immigrant experience on different generations. Strong performances by Megan Suri and Mohana Krishnan elevate the film, but the story lacks depth and fails to fully explore its interesting themes.

Written and directed by Bishal Dutta, It Lives Inside is more than a horror story — it weaves the immigrant experience into its tapestry while employing Hindu mythology to drive its central narrative. The horror itself is little more than slightly unsettling, but never outright scary or chilling. Rather, it’s the metaphor and character journey that truly carry this film. Dutta does a decent job exploring the lead character’s experience as an outsider, how her classmates “other” her, and the relationships that are damaged in a bid to assimilate.

It Lives Inside Review
Image
Plot: An Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness.

Review: One of the coolest trends going on in horror right now is the usage of cultural Boogeymen. Some of these have reached the pop culture zenith, while others remain simple horrors for small-knit communities. Indian culture has a ton of demons, many of which the average American would have never heard anything about. The creature presented in It Lives Inside is called Pishacha and is based on flesh-eating demons in different Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. The history of the creature feels so much more intriguing since it’s based on actual mythology, versus something a screenwriter concocted to scare us. All of this is to say that, while the story may follow many beats we’ve seen before,...

‘It Lives Inside’: Five Terrifying Movie Monsters Lurking in the Shadows
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for the following films abound.

Few experiences unite people from all walks of life like a fear of the dark. Often surpassing specific concerns of serial killers, monsters, witches, or demons, what we collectively fear most is that mysterious, dark unknown. Anything and everything could be lurking in the shadows just waiting to pounce. Bishal Dutta’s terrifying new film It Lives Inside follows an ancient evil that hides in dark corners while terrorizing its prey. The film follows a troubled teen named Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) terrorized by a flesh-eating demon known as the Pishacha that feasts on negative energy. This malevolent being soon sets its sights on her best friend Samidha (Megan Suri) and begins a campaign of terror hoping to gorge itself on chaos, destruction, and emotional pain.

One of Dutta’s most frightening scenes takes place in Samidha’s darkened bedroom. Staring at her open closet door,...

‘It Lives Inside’ Is More Metaphor Than Horror Movie
Image
What the fuck is in that jar?

That’s the first question that It Lives Inside throws at you, and the one that has Samida (Never Have I Ever‘s Megan Suri) wondering if it has something to do with the odd behavior of her classmate, Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). Once upon a time, these two first-generation Indian-Americans were the closest of friends. Then, as they got older, Samida started going by “Sam,” began distancing herself from her cultural identity, and chose to hang with a newer, “cooler” (read: Caucasian) crowd.

Screaming Was the Hardest Part of Filming "It Lives Inside," According to Megan Suri
Image
Megan Suri was permitted to conduct this interview amid the actors' strike through Neon's interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

Megan Suri is a big horror fan, so when the chance to star in the new film "It Lives Inside" came, it felt preordained. "I grew up watching [the genre]," she tells Popsugar. She instantly connected with movies like "The Collector" and "Paranormal Activity."

"I'm just a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. And I love feeling fear," she admits. Horror movies, Suri says, can elicit emotions from an audience like no other: "That's what's exciting to me, especially when you go and watch it in a theater and you're surrounded by that universal energy."

In "It Lives Inside," Suri plays Sam, an Indian American high schooler who's running from her family's culture - and her former best friend Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). But Tamira is being tormented by a demonic spirit called a Pishach,...

High School Horror: Five Doomed Students Before ‘It Lives Inside’
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for the following films abound.

When asked about the most horrific time in their lives, many will shudder then say the years they spent in high school. From unpredictable acne and savage bullies to the particularly brutal pain of childhood friends growing apart, the high school halls can sometimes feel more like a minefield. Horror creators have explored this familiar subgenre for decades, from early classics like I Was a Teenage Werewolf to the slick and witty slasher boom of the 90s.

Bishal Dutta’s terrifying It Lives Inside continues this tradition by blending high school horror with demonic possession to explore the terrors of finding your place in an unforgiving world. The film follows Tamira (Mohana Krishnan), a tortured student carrying something much darker than a challenging schedule. Her best friend is drifting away, she hasn’t slept in weeks, and she’s constantly toting a...

It Lives Inside Review | A Memorably Creepy Thrill
Image
It Lives Inside, the Midnight Audience Award winner from SXSW, expands to wide release September 22, hoping to stake a claim among the flurry of horror films released in fall. Director Bishal Dutta’s freshman outing delves deep into Hindu mythology in a thriller that finds an Indian American teen girl fending off an evil force while also having to reconnect to her cultural roots in India in the process.

That’s enough to send anybody to therapy. Whether protagonist Samidha / Sam (Megan Suri of Missing and Poker Face) survives is sure fun if not bone-chilling to watch. It Lives Inside stands out, mostly because it features diverse characters and a culture that general audiences don’t often experience. To that end, It Lives Inside is worth seeing for it's refreshingly unique pace and tone, and the way it serves up an evil force that’s downright creepy. Does it suffer from standard horror tropes?...

‘It Lives Inside’ Review: A Horror Debut About First-Generation Immigrants Falls Short of Its Potential
Image
The encounter in the girls locker room initiates the nightmare scenario of It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta’s jagged feature debut about a small town besieged by an ancient spirit.

Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) stand across from each other in the dimly lit aisle, exchanging weighted stares. Culture and a shared history bind the two teenagers, whose reputations differ at their small, white suburban high school. Samidha goes by Sam now — an attempt to close the gap between her Indian culture and the American one embodied by her classmates. She would prefer to loiter around a campfire with her crush (Gage Marsh) than help her mother (Neeru Bajwa) prepare for puja.

Tamira is a more shadowy figure; her character seems mostly to be Sam’s opposite. The young woman, dressed in drab and ill-fitting clothes, sticks out. She inspires stares, whispers and jokes. When she shuffles through the hall,...

‘It Lives Inside’ Review: A Generic Horror Movie Tries to Mine Scares from the Complexity of Being a First-Generation Immigrant
Image
Horror films are uniquely effective at giving tangible shape to our most abstract demons, and so it often feels somewhat perverse when a genre exercise chooses to subvert its own potential by creating a monster we can’t really see. Dull and disappointing as the actual results might be, Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside” at least has good reason to go with a creature who’s (mostly) shown through sounds and shadows: The ancient Dharmic flesh-eater Pishacha is formed by and feeds off the negative energy of its victims, and visibility itself is the greatest source of that negative energy among the Indian-American high school girls the creature is feasting on when the film begins.

Played by “Never Have I Ever” breakout Megan Suri (who’s far more capable than this movie requires her to be), Samidha is introduced standing in the bathroom of her immigrant parents’ house and...

‘It Lives Inside’: The Legend of the Pishacha – The Terrifying Lore Behind Neon’s New Horror Film
Image
One of the most frightening entities in all of Hindu and Buddhist folklore is a demonic being known as the Pishacha. Also called Piśāca, this sinister breed of flesh-eating creature has been compared to the Christian Devil and is believed to be the personification of pure evil. Pishachas are parasitic creatures who sow the seeds of chaos then feed on the resulting negative emotions. Bishal Dutta’s terrifying new film It Lives Inside brings this fearsome creature to life in a story that explores the horrors of adolescent cruelty as well as the dangers lurking around the edges of teenage angst.

Samidha (Megan Suri) is an Indian American high school student wrestling with her cultural identity. Trying to fit in with the popular crowd, she’s distanced herself from her traditional mother Poorna (Neeru Bajwa) and attempted to erase evidence of her earlier life. When Samidha’s childhood best friend...

Betty Gabriel at an event for La 90e cérémonie des Oscars (2018)
Was there a kid at your school who had a haunted look, who was quiet and withdrawn and a natural target for bullies? The kind of kid whom others were afraid to get close to in case people thought they were weird too. Perhaps you were that kid. As an adult one might look at such situations and suspect that something is seriously wrong – divorcing parents, perhaps, or bereavement or abuse. For teenagers desperately preoccupied with establishing themselves socially, it’s a lot harder to achieve that perspective, or to feel inspired to reach out.

When concerned teacher Joyce (Betty Gabriel) asks Samidha (Megan Suri) how Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) is doing, she’s surprised that the girl reacts as if she’s been insulted, but Samidha – or Sam, as she prefers to be known – has two reasons for not wanting to be associated with her former best friend. She doesn’t want.

‘It Lives Inside’ Trailer #2 Delivers the Chills
Image
Neon’s second trailer for It Lives Inside is incredibly creepy without being too spoiler-ish. Written and directed by Bishal Dutta, the PG-13 horror film is a unique twist on a demonic possession story.

“It Lives Inside emerged as an image: a kid on a bike, riding through Rockwellian suburbs. It’s right out of an early Amblin film. But what if this kid was escaping a puja, her school outfit wrapped in an ornate dupatta? For me, that image spoke to the duality I felt growing up as a first-generation immigrant in America. ‘Where do I belong? Which country is my home? Which world is ultimately mine?'” explained Dutta.

The cast includes Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Vik Sahay, Gage Marsh, Beatrice Kitsos, and Betty Gabriel.

Get Out‘s Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick served as producers. Edward H. Hamm Jr, Jameson Parker, Arielle Boisvert, and Shawn Williamson executive produce.

The It Lives Inside Trailer Brings A Terrifying Film Fest Favorite To Your Nightmares
Image
Thanks to the massive success of "Get Out," the last several years have seen an influx of Black horror films, bringing some much-needed racial diversity to a predominantly white genre. Latino horror has also been going strong as ever of late, with films like "Tigers Are Not Afraid" and "La Llorona" reaping critical accolades left and right. But what about Asian-American horror? No, the J-horror remake trend of the 2000s doesn't count, not least of all because most of those "Americanized" re-imaginings centered on white characters.

Enter "It Lives Inside." The first feature film written and directed by Bishal Dutta ("Triads"), the upcoming horror title was largely well-received during its premiere at the 2023 South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival. Reviewing the film for /Film, Matt Donato wrote, "Dutta doesn't hide influences in spotlight set pieces from 'The Ring' to 'It Follows' (intentional or not)," and you can spot...

It Lives Inside Review: A Frustratingly Nonchalant Spin on Demonic Horror
Bishal Dutta
American horror films featuring demons generally have a Christian bent, so a Hindu spin on this subgenre is enticing for its potential to breathe new life into well-trodden terrain. But while Bishal Dutta’s It Lives Inside follows through on its promise of representation in terms of its cast full of Indian and Indian American actors, the film’s attempts at actual cultural specificity are about as nuanced as a “very special episode” of a Disney sitcom.

It Lives Inside offers a brief peek at Hindu religious festivities inside Samidha’s (Megan Suri) house, and Sam’s loving mother, Poorna (Neeru Bajwa), primarily speaks to her daughter in Hindi. One gets a sense that the girl’s feelings of shame are tied to her sense of otherness (she’s one of only two Indian Americans at her high school), but otherwise there’s little to distinguish Sam from the disaffected...

‘It Lives Inside’ Horror Film Sets a September Release
Image
Neon’s set a September 22, 2023 theatrical release date for the creepy horror film It Lives Inside. The coming-of-age horror debuted at SXSW and took home the Midnighter Audience Award.

The trailer shows two Indian teenagers going face-to-face with a demonic creature, and writer/director Bishal Dutta says his inspiration came from growing up on American horror movies.

“After I moved to North America from India at the age of four, a lot of my social education came from watching American horror films. I always wondered, what were families like mine doing while Bruce the shark tore through Amity’s waters, while Freddy Krueger slashed teenagers in the dreamscape, and while Jack Torrance chased his son through the maze-like halls of the Overlook?’ As it developed, It Lives Inside formed its own dual identity much like mine,” explained Dutta. “On one hand, it is a love letter to the community and...
