Grey's Anatomy: How Arizona Robbins' Return Sparks Hope for a Calzona Comeback
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
It's a milestone 20th season of Grey's Anatomy knocking on our doors, and they're not holding back.

We saw that Grey's Anatomy Season 19 felt like a soft reboot of the series, simultaneously tapping into the nostalgia with throwback formats with new faces and the return of series fan favorites.

And Grey's Anatomy Season 20 promises to keep up that same energy.

To the relief of many, Ellen Pompeo didn't hang up her stethoscope permanently despite her minimal role last season, and we know for a fact that she'll make some appearances this season.

It's even been teased that she'll appear in the season premiere.

And Grey's Anatomy Season 19 also excited long-time fans with the epic return of Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery.

Throughout the season, she helmed a critical and timely arc about women's health issues, taking on the abolishment of Roe v. Wade and showcasing the long-reaching ramifications of that decision on the healthcare industry.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Jessica Capshaw Returning as Dr. Arizona Robbins in Season 20
Image
Look who’s roller-skating back into Grey Sloan Memorial: Jessica Capshaw will return to play Dr. Arizona Robbins in the upcoming 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy. Meanwhile, Alex Landi is coming back to play Dr. Nico Kim in Season 20 while Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares guest-star, according to Deadline. Capshaw was last seen on Grey’s Anatomy in 2018, when Arizona, a pediatric surgeon, headed to New York City for a possible reunion with ex-wife Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) in the Season 14 finale. Both Capshaw and costar Sarah Drew were let go from the ABC medical drama at the end of Season 14 — much to fans’ outrage — though Drew has guest-starred in two more episodes since. Since her time on Grey’s, Capshaw has appeared in the 2020 Netflix movie Holidate and the first season of Hulu’s Tell Me Lies. ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Jessica Capshaw & Alex Landi Return As Guest Stars; Natalie Morales & Freddy Miyares Also Join Season 20
Image
Expect to see some familiar faces returning to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital soon.

Jessica Capshaw is set to guest star in Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, reprising her beloved role as Dr. Arizona Robbins. Also Alex Landi will return as Dr. Nico Kim.

No word yet on how, exactly, these two will make their way back to Grey Sloan. “I Saw This World As a Terrifying Possibility”: ‘THR Presents’ Q&a With ‘Dmz’ Stars Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt and More
Image
Click here to read the full article.

HBO Max’s new dystopian drama Dmz is based on the comic book series of the same name. Although the source material was released early in the 21st century, its themes are still relevant in the Covid landscape.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Hilton Dresden moderated a conversation with the cast and creative team, including actors Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt, Freddy Miyares and Hoon Lee, as well as executive producers Roberto Patino and Ernest Dickerson, who served as writer and director, respectively, for THR Presents, powered by Vision Media.

Each member of the creative team had a different relationship to the original text. Patino bought the comic back in 2005, when it first came out. He explained: “I instantly became hooked. It was a very captivating very terrifying world. I read every episode, all 72 issues, and then about 2016, 11 years later, I came back to it,...

Freddy Miyares on the ‘Beautiful and Tragic’ Relevancy of ‘Dmz’
Freddy Miyares at an event for The L Word: Generation Q (2019)
Almost no one could have predicted the unprecedented global events of the past two years, which is why Freddy Miyares is quite surprised by how HBO Max’s “Dmz” has only become more relevant over time.

The dystopian miniseries — in which Manhattan has become a demilitarized zone after a second civil war breaks out in America — comes after two years of a global pandemic that has kept millions of individuals isolated. It’s also debuting amid Russia’s devastating war in Ukraine, which the rest of the world has watched from afar.

“Even now, considering what’s happening on the other side of the world, the effects of war — what happens to a community, to a culture, and how is it preserved? Where do we maintain humanity? The series really does encapsulate that,” Miyares told TheWrap of how the show has proven timelier than he could have imagined. “It’s a beautiful and tragic story,...

SXSW Review: Ava DuVernay & Roberto Patino’s ‘Dmz’ Is Thrilling, Terrifying & A Trojan Horse For America 2022
Image
They say the devil is in the details, and that is certainly true for the dystopia dazzle that is Ava DuVernay and Roberto Patino’s Dmz.

Having just had its world premiere at SXSW today and set to debut on HBO Max on March 17, the Rosario Dawson, Hoon Lee and Benjamin Bratt-led adaptation of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s comic of the same name can be best summarized in the massive graffiti splayed across a dilapidated Manhattan building in the series – “We’re Still Here.”

Yes, in the agile sociological hands of 13th and When They See Us director DuVernay, it is all still here, even more so in a further broken America. The racial, gender, class warfare and constant betrayal that has been soaked in the soil since before America even became a country is still here in the near future of Dmz and the wound is...

‘Bel-Air’ to Feature Daphne Maxwell Reid, Vernee Watson-Johnson in ‘Fresh Prince’ Reunion (TV News Roundup)
Image
“Bel Air” is about to feature a “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion — of sorts. Daphne Maxwell Reid, who played Will’s aunt on later seasons of “Fresh Prince,” and Vernee Watson-Johnson, who recurred as Will’s mom on the show, are returning to Bel Air — in guest starring roles for Episode 9 of Peacock’s new drama.

Maxwell Reid and Watson-Johnson portrayed Aunt Viv and Viola “Vy” Smith, respectively, in the original series. For their upcoming guest roles on “Bel-Air,” the two will play “Helen” and “Janice,” members of the Art Council Board of Trustee.

Peacock’s “Bel-Air” reimagines the beloved “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” sitcom — with a new lens on Will’s (Jabari Banks) complicated journey from West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. The series, inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral trailer, is executive produced by Will Smith — as well as director/co-writer Cooper and showrunners T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson.

‘Dmz’ Trailer: Rosario Dawson Fights America’s Second Civil War in Ava DuVernay’s DC Series
Image
America seems to become more polarized and divided every day, with no end in sight, but how bad could it actually get?

That’s the chilling question asked by “Dmz,” an upcoming four-part limited series on HBO Max, based on Brian Wood’s DC Comics series of the same name. The story takes place in a near future in which America has become engulfed in a second civil war between the United States and a group of secessionist armies who call themselves the Free States of America. The fighting has resulted in Manhattan turning into a demilitarized zone separating territories held by the two armies. With no government in place to enforce laws, the island is ruled by criminal gangs, with power shifting on a near-daily basis.

Ava DuVernay, who executive produces “Dmz” and directed all four episodes, described it as a show “set a few moments in the future...

The four-part limited series, based on the DC graphic novel of the same name, tells the story of a near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone — hence the title of the series. The show chronicles the journey of fierce medic Alma Ortega (Dawson), who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son.

In the trailer released on Monday — which you can watch above — Dawson’s Alma explains that she and her son were split apart during the evacuation out of Manhattan before it became a demilitarized zone. Even though the city is now an active war zone, she decides she must go back in search of him.

She contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land,...

Patino and DuVernay will both executive produce the series, which begins production next year. Patino will write all eight episodes and serve as showrunner, while DuVernay will direct.

Here is the logline:

In the near future, America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone (Dmz), destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world. Leaping off the pages of the popular comic, “Dmz” chronicles the harrowing journey of fearless and fierce medic Alma Ortega (series star Rosario Dawson), who sets out on a harrowing journey to find the son she lost in the evacuation of New York City at the onset of the conflict.

“When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s dramatization of the wrongful arrest and conviction of five black teenagers in New York City after the rape of a Central Park jogger 20 years ago, has been the most-viewed series on Netflix for the past 13 days.

“‘When They See Us’ has been the most-watched series on Netflix in the Us every day since it premiered on May 31,” the streamer tweeted Wednesday.

But Netflix didn’t provide any additional info beyond that, and it has selectively doled out self-reported numbers in the past to tout the popularity of some of its original series and films.

The four-part Netflix series was created by DuVernay, who also co-wrote and directed. She retweeted Netflix’s post about “When They See Us,” commenting only: “*faints*.”

Oprah Winfrey hosts tearful ‘When They See Us’ event with Ava DuVernay and the Exonerated Five at close of Netflix Fysee [Watch]
Netflix closed its Emmy Fysee space on Sunday, June 9, with an emotionally charged screening of Ava DuVernay‘s limited series “When They See Us.” The event, hosted by executive producer Oprah Winfrey, included a Q&a with DuVernay, the cast and producers, followed by a separate interview with the Exonerated Five, whose devastating life stories formed the basis of the show. The discussion, which took place at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, will air in its entirety on Netflix and on Winfrey’s Own Network on June 12. Watch a clip above.

“When They See Us” recounts the true story of Antron McCray, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam. In 1989, when they were teenagers, they were wrongfully convicted of raping a white jogger in New York City and spent years in prison and as registered sex offenders before their sentences were vacated in 2002 when the actual perpetrator came forward.

The cast and producers behind “When They See Us” sat down for a conversation with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday night at Netflix’s Fysee location in Hollywood. But the night’s discussion wasn’t just about the stars of the limited series. Winfrey also sat down with the five men, formerly referred to as “The Central Park Five” and now “The Exonerated Five” — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — for the first time.

“I’m excited about it because they’re excited about it,” series creator and director Ava DuVernay told Variety on the red carpet before the taping. “At one point, one of them had said to me a couple of years ago during the research period, that when they were young, they’d wished that they could just get to Oprah. [They thought] if they could get to Oprah and tell their story, maybe then...

”A large part of what the story is, is about redressing the media narratives and how these boys — and men now — were done wrong in the narratives that were told that around them and about them and that’s one of them,” ‘When They See Us’ actor Joshua Jackson told Variety on the red carpet at the Aclu SoCal’s luncheon. The actor was talking about reframing the men as the “Exonerated Five.”

“In calling them the ‘Central Park Five,’ we reinforce this idea — that they were there and had anything to do with this — that that was the central backbone of their life. But they’re not allowed to move on from it. They are exonerated and they are the victims of this case, not the perpetrators.”

Jackson noted that the series was initially titled “The Central Park Five,” before it was changed to “When They See Us.” “I’ll just say for myself,...

Must See: Filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” Debuts On Netflix
When They See Us

In 2012, Ken Burns made the documentary called The Central Park Five. Wamg’s Melissa Thompson wrote how the film told of the story of five black teenagers who were arrested in 1989 for the brutal beating and rape of a woman jogger in New York’s Central Park .

“What followed was one of the worst miscarriages of justice anyone could ever imagine. Starting with the New York City cops who interrogated the boys without parents or lawyers present, to the media, who created a mob-mentality screaming with bloodlust, with their tabloid headlines and made up term “wilding wolf pack” to whip the public into a frenzy of demands for the death penalty.

And all the while these poor kids had nothing to do with the horrific crime, other than the fact that they were in the park on that same night. There was absolutely no evidence connecting them to the case,...

‘When They See Us’ Cast Reflects on Justice, Righteousness and Working With the Central Park Five
Ava DuVernay at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
“Dedicate a couple of hours to justice, to righteousness, to our community and to love,” Ava DuVernay told Variety about her powerful limited series “When They See Us,” which dramatizes the accusation, conviction and eventual exoneration of the Central Park Five.

The five men — Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam and Raymond Santana — all between 14 and 16 years old when they were wrongfully arrested for the brutal rape of a Central Park jogger in 1989, attended the premiere at the Apollo Theater in New York on Monday night. It was only fitting for them to walk the red carpet, given how closely they worked with the Academy Award nominee and director, and her cast and crew on the making of the show. The four-part series tells their story, spanning 25 years — beginning when the teenagers were first questioned in 1989, and continuing through their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement they reached with...

Chilling First Trailer for Netflix's When They See Us Series About the Central Park Five
We have a chilling trailer for you today for a four part series coming to Netflix called When They See Us, a miniseries chronicling the case of the Central Park Five. In April of 1989, 28 year old Trisha Meili, a white women, was jogging through Central Park. She was violently attacked and raped and was left in a coma for 12 days. At the time, five teenage boys of color were charged with assault, robbery, riot, rape, sexual abuse, and attempted murder. This was despite the fact that none of their DNA matched the rape kit, and all of their confessions were thought to be false or coerced. All the young men were sentenced to between five and fifteen years in prison. A serial rapist later confessed to the crime, and the young men were exonerated. But the wrongful conviction and time in prison could not be erased.

The series follows their...

Ava DuVernay at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
We’ve known for a couple of years now that filmmaker Ava DuVernay has been working on a Netflix limited series about the Central Park Five, and now that four-part drama has an official title and premiere date. “When They See Us” debuts on the streaming service on May 31, just in time to qualify for this year’s Emmys. Will it be a winner?

“When They See Us” tells the true story of the five teenage boys, all black or Hispanic, who were wrongly arrested, tried and convicted for the rape of a white woman in 1989. They spent years in prison, and Donald Trump even took out ads calling for them to be executed. But their convictions were vacated in 2002 after they were exonerated by DNA evidence and the confession of a convicted murderer and rapist already in prison at the time. They sued the city and were awarded a $41 million settlement in 2014. Nevertheless,...
