When The Biggest Loser premiered in 2004, it was billed as an inspiring weight-loss competition. Over more than a decade, it became NBC’s biggest hit, launched celebrity trainers, and transformed dozens of contestants in front of millions of viewers. But as Netflix’s new three-part docuseries Fit for TV: The Reality of "The Biggest Loser" reveals, the story behind the glossy “before and after” photos was far more complex — and often far more painful.
Director Skye Borgman (Abducted in Plain Sight) says her first step was rewatching the series from start to finish. “I was just so struck at how I remembered it differently from my experience of it now, today,” she tells Gold Derby. “The only way to tell this story was from the contestants’ perspective — they had the most authentic, most real, and most diverse experiences.”
Executive producer Michael Gasparro says that approach was key. “We didn’t want to make something salacious,...

Reality TV is always hit or miss, but back in the 2000s, when skinniness was in and obesity was just a soft target, producer Dave Broome had a lightbulb moment when he was at his local gym. He saw a sign where an obese man was asking for a trainer to “save his life,” and this gave him the idea of starting a survival-esque show where people lost weight on television to compete for 250,000 dollars. This became the superhit reality show “The Biggest Loser.” Let’s assume the intentions were genuinely good, but at the end of the day, this is television, and no matter what, it is for entertainment and scandal, which is exactly what “The Biggest Loser” became. The show begins with a woman, in public, introducing herself in a bikini to get the attention of the producers of the show, screaming, “I want to be on The Biggest Loser.

While Disney has proven that almost everybody has a soft spot for fairy tales, the 2022 Netflix movie The School for Good and Evil takes a look at the classic stories of princes, princesses, and evil queens from an entirely new perspective. Based on the young adult novels by Soman Chainani, the film centers on best friends Agatha and Sophie, who are from a small village where nothing magical ever happens. When they discover a magical book, they are swept away to the School for Good and Evil, where heroes and villains from fairy tales are real figures of history.
Much to their surprise, Sophie is placed in the School for Evil, and Agatha is assigned to the School for Good. With eight books in the School for Good and Evil series, there’s a lot of potential for a continuing film franchise. It’s been two years since the first movie premiered on Netflix,...

Warning: this article contains spoilers for The Wheel of Time book series after The Dragon Reborn and for season 2 of The Wheel of Time TV show
Amazon's The Wheel of Time series finished its second season with a literally explosive climax, as Rand al'Thor showed the world he was the Dragon Reborn as he slew Ishamael, the Betrayer of Hope. The Wheel of Time season 3 and its "absolutely bananas" opening will follow Rand as he continues on toward his destiny of fighting the apocalyptic Last Battle against the Dark One. Yet The Wheel of Time is a popular show not only because of such powerful characters with capitalized epithets showing how important they all are - it's popular because the world is full of fascinating people with their own destinies.
While many of the show's changes from the books have been met with criticism, some of the differences in The Wheel of Time...

MGM+’s “Domina” actress Joelle goes by one name like Madonna and Cher. She steps back in time this season and into a Roman world, post Julius Caesar as Tiberius’ wife Vipsania.
In the series, Joelle worked with the hair and makeup team to create a look fitting for the show’s themes, death, manipulation and a battle for control over the city.
Through her looks, a story was being reflected.
Speaking with Variety, Joelle, who has appeared in “Dune” and “The School for Good and Evil” says, “In the beginning, Vipsania is at her most innocent, she’s young and in love and hair department head Claudia Catini chose a playful golden red wig for the first three episodes.” Together they collaborated on her evolving look and most importantly how to incorporate the actor’s natural look (the actor was diagnosed with alopecia universalis at the age of 8 and...
