Uli Latukefu is set to star as Luke Finau in Prime Video’s upcoming series, Countdown, but now he’s pulling back the curtain on his time playing what many view as his most famous role. Latukefu features as a young Dwayne Johnson in Young Rock, the sitcom/biopic telling the story of The Rock’s formative years as he grew up. Latukefu plays the 18-20-year-old version of Johnson, Adrian Groulx plays him at age 10, and Bradley Constant at age 15. Randall Park also stars in the show as himself, and Ana Tuisila plays The Rock’s mother, Lia Maivia. Collider’s Aidan Kelley recently caught up with Latukefu at the premiere of Countdown, and he asked what it was like taking on such an “unenviable role”:

Young Rock season 4 could be revived after its NBC cancellation, according to executive consultant Harvey Wippleman. The Young Rock season 3 finale hints at Johnson's beginnings as a movie star and offers a heartfelt goodbye. Despite his success as a WWE superstar, there is still much more to Johnson's story as he transitions into acting.

Young Rock season 4 gets a surprising update following its NBC cancellation. Co-created by Jeff Chiang and Nahnatchka Khan with Dwayne Johnson serving as an on-screen narrator and looking back on his early years, the sitcom split Johnson's life into three main periods. Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, and Uli Latukefu played the titular role, with season 3 focusing on Johnson's beginnings as a WWE superstar. The show also starred Stacey Leilua, Joseph Lee Anderson, and Ana Tuisila.

Now, after NBC cancelled Young Rock in June of this year, executive consultant Harvey Wippleman told Developmentally Speaking (via Comicbook.com) about a potential revival.

NBC has canceled two of its newer sitcoms, including the Dwayne Johnson-produced Young Rock. In addition to having Johnson on board as executive producer and co-creator, Johnson also narrated the show and made cameo appearances as the future version of himself, running for president in 2032. However, the show largely revolved around Johnson at age 10 to 14 (Adrian Groulx), 15 to 17 (Bradley Constant), and 18 to 26 (Uli Latukefu).

Per The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has made decisions on some of its on-the-bubble shows, canceling the sitcoms Grand Crew after season 2 and Young Rock after season 3. This decision could potentially be driven by the fact that the AMPTP has not yet negotiated a deal with the WGA, necessitating the continuation of the writers strike and indefinitely delaying scripted programming. Young Rock did, however, experience a major dip in ratings during season 3, continuing a tough streak for Johnson that includes the lukewarm box office performance of 2022's Black Adam.

Per Deadline, the series about Johnson's rise from the son of a WWE Hall of Famer to the biggest wrestling superstar in the business has been canceled after three seasons. The primary reason for Young Rock's cancellation was Season 3's Nielsen ratings, with the season having averaged 1.4 million viewers and a 0.25 rating. This was a steep drop from Young Rock Season 2, which averaged 2.23 million viewers, while Season 1 earned a series high of 3 million viewers.

NBC made the decision official on Friday, canceling the half-hour comedy series inspired by Dwayne Johnson’s life after three seasons.

“Young Rock” followed young Dwayne Johnson as he navigated his rise from unknown wrestler to Hollywood superstar. Together, Dwayne and his unorthodox family faced locker room politics, new rivalries and the perils of burgeoning fame as he found his voice in the WWE as The Rock. Told through stories from his own life, the show followed Dwayne’s journey to the top and the characters that kept him grounded — even as he set his sights on ever-bigger arenas.

Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant and Uli Latukefu played young Dwayne during various stages of his childhood. Joseph Lee Anderson portrayed Dwayne’s late father, Rocky, while Stacey Leilua played his mother, Ata.

The show wrapped its third (and now final) season Feb. 24, averaging less than 2 million viewers per episode.

NBC has canceled “Grand Crew” after two seasons and “Young Rock” after three seasons.

“Grand Crew,” which comes from Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), followed friends Noah, Nicky, Sherm, Anthony, Wyatt and Fay as they navigated the ups and downs of life and unpacked it all at their favorite wine bar.

The cast includes Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Aaron Jennings, Justin Cunningham, Carl Tart and Grasie Mercedes. The hangout comedy is produced by Universal Television, with Jackson and Goor serving as executive producers.

NBC has made decisions on two of its three bubble comedies and one of its four pilots.

The network has opted to cancel sophomore series Grand Crew and third-year show Young Rock, leaving fellow comedy American Auto on the bubble. As part of NBC’s comedy moves Friday, the network has handed out a series order to the mockumentary series St. Denis Medical. There is no word yet on the fates of NBC’s three remaining pilots, comedy Non-Evil Twin with Amber Ruffin and dramas Murder by the Book and Wolf.

St. Denis Medical, in the vein of ABC’s breakout Emmy darling Abbott Elementary, is described as a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity. NBC revealed the cancellation today, along with Grand Crew, while a decision has yet to be made on the future of American Auto. Separately, it picked up single-camera workplace comedy St. Denis Medical, starring Wendi McLendon-Covey and David Alan Grier, to series.

Season 3 saw quite a dip in linear ratings compared to the previous season, managing about 1.4M viewers and a 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic, according to live + same-day Nielsen data. Compare that to Season 2, which drew an average of 2.23M viewers and a 0.39 rating. Season 1 was by far the most-watched, averaging more than 3M viewers per episode and an impressive 0.62 demo rating.

The third season premiered in November 2022 and ended its 13-episode run in February.

American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.

NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.

American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.

Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.

Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.

When Season 1 of NBC’s Young Rock came to an end, a lot of fans said they wanted more wrestling added to the mix. And that’s exactly what they’ll get when the sitcom returns for a heartfelt Season 2 this Tuesday at 8/7c.

Young Dewey will fight in the ring during a daydream sequence in the season opener, and Adrian Groulx, who plays the youngest Rock, had to rock wrestling shorts to pull off the scene. But he says it was totally worth it.

Sean Astin is joining Dwayne Johnson’s “Young Rock” Season 2 in the role of The Rock’s childhood nemesis, Variety has learned exclusively.

A recurring guest star for the NBC comedy’s upcoming second season, Astin will play Dr. Julian Echo in the show’s fast-forwards. Dr. Echo, who had run-ins with Dwayne as a kid, is now a chiropractor from Minnesota who holds a grudge. He reappears two weeks before election day, claiming that Dwayne tried to kill him, a revelation that threatens to derail the Johnson presidential campaign.

Astin’s recent TV credits include playing Bob on “Stranger Things,” as well as guest stints on “The Big Bang Theory,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Supergirl.” He also served as narrator on last year’s “Playing with Power: The Nintendo Story.” The actor is also known for his roles in “The Goonies,” “Rudy” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Dwayne Johnson’s autobiographical NBC comedy “Young Rock” has cast “Ballers” actor Arlyn Broche as a very personal character in The Rock’s life: Dany Garcia, his college sweetheart-turned-ex-wife-and-business-partner, Variety has learned exclusively.

Per the official description for the character, who will be a recurring guest star on the upcoming second season of “Young Rock,” Dany is compassionate and caring while also being a disciplined athlete and future CEO. She starts as Dwayne’s college sweetheart at Miami, but soon becomes a guiding force in his life as he contemplates embracing the grind of professional wrestling.

Broche is best known for her breakout role as Tonya on Season 2 of HBO’s “Ballers,” starring alongside Johnson and Andy Garcia on the show, which was produced by Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks banner. NBC will air original episodes of all five of its comedy series — returning shows Young Rock, Kenan and Mr. Mayor – and new series Grand Crew and American Auto — during the week of December 13, ahead of their regular 2022 season premieres. The standalone holiday specials were initially announced in May before Grand Crew and American Auto had been given series orders.

Young Rock, Kenan and Mr. Mayor will return December 15 for holiday-inspired special episodes before their second season premieres in the new year.

New comedy American Auto, from Superstore executive produce Justin Spitzer, – will air its first two episodes in a special preview on Monday, December 13 at 10 p.m. following a live two-hour telecast of The Voice. Production on season two of Universal Studio Group series Young Rock will begin in Queensland this month, with filming to take place on location around South-East Queensland and Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

The series has received a $6.3 million grant from the Federal Government’s Location Incentive Program with the expectation it will inject more than $47 million into the Australian economy and create approximately 250 jobs for local cast and crew. Screen Queensland is also supporting the NBC-commissioned comedy via its Production Attraction Strategy.

Willig’s André, one of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling, commands respect wherever he goes. “Young Rock” stars Dwayne Johnson as himself as he runs for president in 2032 with weekly flashbacks to one of three periods of his life: when he was 10, 15 and a college student at the University of Miami. To say that casting three young versions of the man who would grow up to be The Rock was a huge endeavor would be an understatement.

“It was a big, big search because you’re matching the real person. So what we did is we were given some reference photos just to see what he looked like at age 10, age 15 and then his college years,” casting director Michael V. Two of NBC’s freshmen comedies are getting a sophomore year. Young Rock and Kenan have both been renewed for Season 2 at the network, TVLine has learned.

The network has renewed comedies Young Rock and Kenan for second seasons. It marks the latest comedy renewals at the broadcaster, having ordered a second season of Mr. Mayor last month.

NBC said Young Rock, which debuted in February, is the No. 2 new comedy of the season in the 18-49 demo and that the pilot episode has been seen by 13.4M viewers. The network also noted that it is its top comedy debut across digital platforms on record through 60 days with 3.6M digital views.
