New 'Street Fighter' Movie Casts 'Presence' Star as Chun-Li
Image
The long-awaited return of Street Fighterto the big screen has cast another iconic character from the video game franchise. Chun-Li will be making her presence known in the new film, which has already cast several major characters that longtime fans will instantly recognize.

According to Deadline, Presence star Callina Liang has joined the upcoming Street Fighter reboot as Chun-Li. She joins a star-studded cast that includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, and Orville Peck. In the source material, Chun-Li is known as a martial artist and Interpol officer who seeks revenge against the murderer of her father, the franchise's main antagonist, M. Bison. Her inclusion likely means that audiences will see Bison on the big screen after Raul Julia portrayed the character in the 1994 cult classic. Street Fighter is set to be directed by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip).

Hulu’s Horror Queen Era Belongs to Lucy Liu, Thanks to Steven Soderbergh
Image
Lucy Liu is raging on the screens once again, though this time, she’s there to have her fans screaming. Out of all the different genres she has starred in, in all those different roles, the 56-year-old actress is gaining significant attention for her latest horror flick that is currently dominating the Hulu charts: Presence.

Although the movie, which was created with director Steven Soderbergh at its helm, wasn’t met with tremendous acclaim at its release and didn’t prove to be that massive of a box office success back then, the supernatural thriller is now turning the tables and pretty much establishing Liu as the queen of the Horror era on Hulu.

2025's Most Unique Horror Movie Is A Streaming Hit On Hulu
Image
In a crowded field, Hulu is fast-becoming one of the must-have streaming services. 2025 has been a good year for Hulu subscribers, with Chloe Fineman's critically-acclaimed comedy "Summer of 69" dominating the streamer's charts in May and Best Picture winner "Anora" doing the same back in March. We've also seen Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" rocking the Hulu rankings, while Pamela Anderson's overlooked 2024 drama "The Last Showgirl" finally found an audience on the platform in late May. Considering how often these charts get clogged with some of the worst examples of streaming-age sludge, that's a pretty good run for Disney's streamer, and now we've got yet another interesting and unique entry on the Hulu charts in the form of "Presence."

The big conceit of Steven Soderbergh's supernatural thriller is that it's shot entirely from the point of view of a ghost haunting a suburban family home.

Neon's first horror film of 2025 finally lands on Hulu this June
Image
There are certain companies known for producing and/or distributing horror content that consistently push the boundaries of the genre. Studios like A24, Neon, and IFC have developed loyal followings by backing films that range from mainstream thrill rides to daring, experimental nightmares. Whether it's a low-budget indie gem or a genre-defying spectacle, these companies have earned their place as reliable names for horror fans chasing their next jolt of fear.

At the beginning of this year, Neon kicked off its 2025 horror slate with a brand-new title releasing in theaters. This film had previously premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2024, but only those at the festival were able to experience it firsthand. Fortunately, Neon saw the movie's potential and acquired its distribution rights for $5 million. The indie powerhouse would then release the film in U.S. theaters in January 2025. That movie is Presence, a supernatural horror that...

How Scary Is Steven Soderbergh's Horror Movie Presence? The R Rating Explained
Image
In this age of streaming entertainment, viewers' criteria for what qualifies as a multiplex-worthy movie has changed dramatically. Generally, a film has to be a four-quadrant tentpole or a family-friendly animated piffle (preferably with a toy or video game tie-in) to get people out of their houses. Comedies are no longer a safe play, nor are adult-skewing dramas. Small-scale films in general are typically viewed on the couch as a second-screen distraction. Horror movies, however, are typically an exception.

Whether they're big studio productions like "Nosferatu," "A Quiet Place: Day One," and "Alien: Romulus," or more modestly scaled indie efforts like "Longlegs," "Terrifier 3," and "Talk to Me," moviegoers (mostly of the younger variety) will show up on opening weekend provided the hook is well-baited. They don't need stars, and they certainly don't need ecstatic early word from critics (lamentably); all they desire are a few good scares, some creepy atmosphere,...

‘Presence’ Twist Ending Explained: Who Is The Ghost?
Image
The latest collaboration from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp is “Presence,” a haunted house movie set in the home of an average suburban family (led by Lucy Liu and Soderbergh’s “The Knick” star Chris Sullivan). What could be a typical scary movie is elevated by the aesthetic choice to tell the story from the ghost’s point-of-view, so you see it drifting around the house, listening in on conversations between members of the family and occasionally letting itself be known by shaking things or knocking down objects.

And since the movie is told from the ghost’s perspective, that leaves an inherent mystery at the center of “Presence:” who is the ghost?

Read on for more on this, but a very massive spoiler warning should be issued first. Don’t read this without seeing the movie first. Watch it and come on back. It’ll still be...

‘Presence’ Review
Image
Stars: Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Julia Fox, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland | Written by David Koepp | Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Director Steven Soderbergh comes out of self-imposed retirement once again for this engaging and effective ghost story, shot in a series of single takes. From the haunted house-style set-up, audiences might be expecting something along the lines of the Paranormal Activity franchise, but Soderbergh has something else in mind.

Presence begins in a renovated, 100-year-old home, in the leafy suburbs of an unnamed city. The titular presence is a ghost, represented by the subjective, point-of-view camerawork. In the opening scenes, the presence looks out of the window and then goes down the stairs as a late-arriving realtor shows a family – mother Rebekah (Lucy Liu), father Chris (Chris Sullivan) and teenage kids Chloe and Tyler around the property.

Shortly afterwards, the family are all moved in, and Chloe becomes convinced...

'Presence' Star Julia Fox's House Came With a Ghost
Image
In Presence, the new haunted house horror film by Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp (Jurassic World: Rebirth), Julia Fox plays a real estate lawyer who unwittingly sells a family a home plagued by a sadistic ghost. But according to the actress, not only are ghosts real, she lives with one in perfect harmony.

In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers (via Entertainment Weekly), Fox revealed that when she initially purchased her home, she had no idea it was haunted. "It was funny: It begins like any ghost story. I felt a pull toward this house, and it was a full moon, and then I was like, 'That's it. I'm getting the house...'"

Fox explained that after she and her 4-year-old son moved all their things into the house, they discovered a message from the previous owners in the basement. "...there was a little letter from the previous owners basically saying,...

‘Presence’: Steven Soderbergh Turns the Haunted-House Movie Inside Out
Image
You know the Tolstoy quote about all happy families being the same, but “every unhappy family is unhappy in their own way?” The quartet at the center of Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story Presence has refined their own particular brand of dysfunction to perfection. The mom, Rebecca (Lucy Liu), is a first-class control freak, has become involved in some shady financial dealings, and dotes on her teenage son, Tyler (Eddy Maday), in a way that would make Freud’s head explode. He’s a champion swimmer, and she has her...

Pizzo is a writer, director and producer who broke out with a pair of classic films penned for director David Anspaugh: 1986’s inspirational high school basketball Hoosiers, which landed Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor Dennis Hopper and Original Score (Jerry Goldsmith), and the Sean Astin-led college football drama Rudy, which brought Goldsmith another nomination and is considered to be among the best sports films ever made. Most recently, Pizzo co-wrote The Hill, another sports drama starring Dennis Quaid, which tells the story of a pastor’s son who pursues his dream of becoming a pro baseball player.

Presence Review — Steven Soderbergh Makes a Chilling Family Drama Under the Guise of a Ghost Movie
Image
Although it premiered at Sundance almost a year ago, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence is finally making its way to theaters, and audiences may well find themselves surprised by it both formally and narratively. A refreshing spin on a familiar genre, Presence manages to perfectly tread the line between challenging audiences and delivering satisfying entertainment.

Presence Review

Presence follows a family who, after moving to a new house in the suburbs following a tragedy, begin to believe that they are being haunted by an unseen presence. At the core of the film is a relatively standard haunted house story, but this is only the framework upon which something much more intriguing and complex is built.

Like much of Soderbergh’s recent output, Presence is as much an experiment in form as it is anything else. He shot the movie using Dslr cameras as opposed to the typical high-grade professional camera equipment,...

'Presence' Review | A Fresh Approach to Ghostly Suspense
Image
Steven Soderbergh's Presence is an effective, efficient throwback to classic suspenseful thrillers, centered around very modern themes, but with entirely fresh camera techniques. Soderbergh's penchant for trying out new things, putting the camera in different types of places, and weaving those experiments and concepts into plots that work is once again on full display. Presence is also tightly wound. Like a postmodern Alfred Hitchcock, Soderbergh takes viewers into the haunting circumstances of a thriller without doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, and Andy Garcia in Ocean's Eleven (2001)
A mysterious presence lurks within a family’s new home, silently observing their most private and unsettling moments. Directed by the acclaimed Steven Soderbergh—renowned for groundbreaking films like Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Ocean’s Eleven, and Contagion—Presence is a chilling and innovative thriller written by celebrated screenwriter David Koepp.

We recently spoke with the film’s impressive cast, which includes veteran actress Lucy Liu, fan favorite Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), and talented newcomers Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, and West Mulholland. Each actor brought unique energy to their roles, contributing to the film’s haunting and emotional core.

Filmed entirely from a first-person point of view, Presence marks another daring and technically ambitious project from Soderbergh, a director who continuously pushes the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. Steven Soderbergh has never been one to shy away from formal experimentation. Whether he is working within the studio system or independently, shooting on 16mm film or an iPhone, innovation is his trademark. His next audacious venture arrives in the form of Presence, which was shot in secret in the summer of 2023 and finds the filmmaker reinventing the paranormal thriller through an original point of view — in more ways than one.

Soderbergh acts as his own cinematographer, and his camera assumes the first-person perspective of a ghost, floating through the hallways of a spacious, suburban home. Matriarch Rebecca (Lucy Liu) and her nuclear family have moved in, and the spirit watches on as a seemingly idyllic unit begins to show its cracks. Captured in hypnotic long takes and wide angles, Rebecca fawns over her star-athlete son Tyler (Eddy Maday) while her daughter Chloe (Callina Liang) languishes in isolation. In the next room,...

Steven Soderbergh at an event for Les divins secrets (2002)
Steven Soderbergh’s unique-sounding horror Presence releases in the UK next week, and we have a new trailer to stoke our anticipation.

A new Steven Soderbergh film is always a treat, and we’ve lucky enough to have had plenty of them in the last few years. One of the things that make Soderbergh’s films a joy to watch are his unique takes on genre tropes – and Presence, his forthcoming horror, looks to make good on that approach. As the trailer showcases, the film is shot entirely from the perspective of the spectre that haunts the residents of a suburban house.

Releasing in the UK on the 24th January, the story is framed from the perspective of ‘a supernatural entity that stalks an ordinary suburban family.’ The film was first screened at Sundance early this year, before being picked picked up for distribution by Neon. The boutique distributor has...

Presence Trailer Reveals the Steven Soderbergh Horror Film
Image
Neon has shared the official trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s new horror film Presence, opening in theaters on January 24, 2025. In the film, a family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.

With a runtime of 85 minutes, Presence was rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for violence, drug material, language, sexuality and teen drinking.

It’s there before the family even moves in. It witnesses the family’s most intimate uncomfortable moments. It navigates the family’s new house at supernatural speed. It pays unusual attention to Chloe, the teenage girl who’s neither her mother’s nor her brother’s favorite.

It wants — no, it needs — something. And as time goes on, the presence pieces together how it might accomplish its goal. The movie is an unusual, unnerving and emotional thriller from writer David Koepp and director Steven Soderbergh.

Principal photography for the film took place in Cranford,...

At the start of 2024, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray got to check out the Sundance Film Festival premiere of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp’s ghost story Presence, and in his 7/10 review (which you can read Here), he described the film as “a supernatural tale that’s light on horror but heavy on heart.” A wider audience will have the chance to see the movie now that we have switched over to our 2025 calendars, as Neon is planning to give Presence a limited theatrical release on January 24th – and with that date swiftly approaching, the film’s final trailer has now dropped online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The story of Presence gets rolling when a family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they are not alone. A supernatural force has infiltrated the house, and taken a specific interest in the couple’s daughter.

Steven Soderbergh on How a Reality Ghost Story Show With Carrie Fisher Inspired His Newest Movie
Image
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh took inspiration from a surprising source for his new horror/thriller, Presence, starring Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan (This Is Us). The director, who was behind films like Ocean’s 11, Erin Brockovich, and Traffic, said the cable series Celebrity Ghost Stories, which premiered on the A&e network in 2009, influenced his newest film.

Per GamesRadar+, via SFX magazine, Soderbergh talked about how the reality series played a part in making Presence, which is shot entirely from the ghost’s perspective. Presence tells the story of a family convinced that they are not alone after moving into their new suburban home.

“One of my favorite shows is Celebrity Ghost Stories,” Soderbergh said. “You’ve got to see it! You can tell people were traumatized by these experiences - they’re not kidding around.” He explained, “What distinguished a lot of those stories was that they often didn’t...

Steven Soderbergh Tells a Ghost Story in New Trailer for Presence
Image
Steven Soderbergh is gearing up for a busy early 2025. Before his thriller Black Bag, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, arrives in March, we’ll finally get the release of his formally inventive ghost tale Presence. Coming from Neon a year after its Sundance premiere, the supernatural thriller starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox. Ahead of the January 24 release, the new trailer has arrived.

I said in my review, “For a prolific artist, a surge of creativity can often be synonymous with a dip in quality. Though not if you are Steven Soderbergh. He’s only continued to reinvent himself and forge ahead with new technology, subjects, and structural gambles. His latest film, Presence, is a haunting ghost tale wrapped in a nuanced family drama, and one of his most formally ambitious attempts yet. What if the camera, operated by Peter Andrews (aka Soderbergh), was the ghost?...

‘Presence’ Trailer: Steven Soderbergh’s First-Person Haunted House Movie Hails from Neon
Image
A year after premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Steven Soderbergh’s haunted house experiment “Presence” will finally hit theaters — on January 24, 2025. Neon scooped the movie out of the Park City lineup at the top of this year, now adding “Presence” to its growing roster of horror movies (and isn’t that the growing roster of any Hollywood company right now?) after “Longlegs” and “Immaculate” did strong business this year. In a most unusual twist on the haunted house movie, this film about a suburban family who discovers they are not alone in their new home is shot entirely from the perspective of the ghost. Watch the full trailer for “Presence” below.

Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan play the heads of a family whose marriage is already fracturing when they move into a handsome, century-old home in a good school district (with Julia Fox briefly making a cameo as their...

Gravitas Ventures has revealed the official trailer for an indie film titled A Great Divide, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jean Shim. Always good to discover more "where did this come from?" indie gems. The Lee family leave the Bay Area for a fresh start living in the rural expanses of Wyoming, only to encounter hostility, racism, and xenophobia in their new small town community. How they confront these issues will break them – or make them stronger. A Great Divide also focuses on their son Benjamin, played Emerson Min, struggling with his new life. Steven Soderbergh at an event for Les divins secrets (2002)
Steven Soderbergh Ventures into Horror with Innovative Ghost Story “Presence”
Steven Soderbergh at an event for Les divins secrets (2002)
Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is taking on a new challenge with his upcoming movie “Presence.” Scheduled for release in January 2025, the supernatural thriller tells a unique ghost story from the perspective of the haunting spirit. Critics gave strong early praise for “Presence” when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Unlike typical haunted house movies, “Presence” allows viewers to experience the unfolding events through the eyes of the ghost itself. This unconventional storytelling approach provides a fresh take on a familiar genre. The film follows a family who moves into a suburban home and becomes convinced they are not alone in the house. Soderbergh directs from a script by veteran screenwriter David Koepp.

“Presence” assembles an impressive cast that includes Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox. While Soderbergh has directed many different genres over his career, “Presence” marks his first pure horror movie.
