The Waterfrontcreator Kevin Williamson responds to the show's surprising cancellation with a heartfelt message. Debuting on Netflix in June, and consisting of 10 episodes, The Waterfront focused on the dysfunctional Buckey family and their fishing empire that almost doubles as a drug-running scheme.
With an impressive Waterfront cast that includes Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner, Maria Bello, and Topher Grace, the crime drama seemed to be trending in a positive direction. It made it all the more surprising, this past week, when Netflix cancelled the series.

Netflix has made its decision about The Waterfront, the Kevin Williamson–created family crime drama that arrived in June and quickly drew comparisons to Yellowstone. Despite strong viewership in its debut month, Deadline reports the streamer has opted not to move forward with a second season.
The news comes just two months after the show’s June 19 premiere, during which it spent five consecutive weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series — including a rare three weeks at No. 1. At its peak, the series pulled in 11.6 million views in its first full week, topping the debut numbers of some newbie dramas that have already been renewed, like Ransom Canyon...

It’s one and done for The Waterfront, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that Netflix has quickly canceled the crime drama after one season.
The show, created by Scream and Dawson’s Creek mastermind Kevin Williamson, only debuted all eight of its episodes on Netflix on June 19, but seemingly failed to find the audience to justify a renewal.
The Waterfront told the story of the Buckleys, a North Carolina family that turns to crime to save their fishery. The show starred Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly Gonzalez, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner and Topher Grace.
The Waterfront had earned comparisons with other popular Netflix family crime dramas Ozark and Bloodline, however, its scores on Rotten Tomatoes were good but not great, with a critics’ score of 68 percent and an audience score of 66 percent. THR‘s review of the show was also mixed, despite singling out Grace’s performance,...

“The Waterfront” won’t be back for a second season on Netflix.
The hit drama created by Kevin Williamson has been canceled despite a very strong showing when it launched in June, TheWrap has learned.
“The Waterfront” debuted at#1 on Nielsen’s streaming chart back in June. It also spent 5 weeks on Netflix’s global English language top 10 and hit #1 there three times. It scored 8.3 million views in first four days on Netflix, numbers comparable to “Ransom Canyon,” which was renewed in June; notably, “Ransom Canyon” never topped the English language top 10.

“The Waterfront” has gone overboard at Netflix. The streamer has canceled the crime series, Variety has confirmed. The decision comes just over two months after its first season debuted.
Created by Kevin Williamson, “The Waterfront” centered on the Buckley family, a North Carolina fishing dynasty that starts on a slippery slope of illicit activities to save their business. The series starred Holt McCallany and Maria Bello as the Buckley spouses, along with Melissa Benoist and Jack Weary as their hard-up children. The ensemble also included Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell and Brady Hepner.
“The Waterfront” had all eight episodes of its first season bow on June 19. The series spent over a week atop the streamer’s Top 10 before being overtaken after the premiere by the juggernaut “Squid Game,” which debuted its third season less than two weeks after.

Netflix is getting out of business with the Buckleys, cancelling The Waterfront after one season, Deadline reports.
Created by Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek, The Vampire Diaries), the drama series followed the exploits of a prominent North Carolina family, whose desperation to keep their fishing empire afloat leads them into increasingly dangerous waters. All eight episodes dropped on June 19.

Exclusive: Netflix will not be proceeding with a second season of Kevin Williamson’s crime drama series The Waterfront, Deadline has learned. According to sources, Williamson has told the cast about the streamer’s decision, and crew members also have been informed that there would be no Season 2, sources said.
The news is somewhat surprising because the twisted tale about North Carolina’s influential Buckley family did solid business, spending five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series, including a rare three-peat at No.1, peaking at 11.6M views for its first full week of release.
That is above the delivery of another freshman drama series, which was recently renewed by Netflix, Ransom Canyon, which spent four weeks in the Top 10, peaking at No. 2 with 9.4M views for its first full week.
The Waterfront did significantly better than the two other dramas Netflix has canceled so far this year after one season, Pulse and The Residence, which both spent four weeks in the Top 10, peaking at No. 3 with 8.5M views and No. 2 with 8.8M views, respectively.
In their renewal decisions, Netflix executives typically lean into performance vs. cost, with other factors, like awards recognition, social media buzz and the type of audience tuning in, also taken into account. In addition to number views, performance includes completion rate, which is not made public. Sources close to the production told Deadline earlier this month that the rate for The Waterfront was good. I hear that Netflix didn’t feel that the viewership and the completion rate were high enough to secure a renewal.
Like Ransom Canyon, headlined by Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, The Waterfront, starring Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist and Mario Bello, is a character-driven family drama.
Unlike Ransom Canyon, which is a Netflix production — as is Forever — The Waterfront comes from Universal Television. It is unclear whether the streamer’s renewal threshold is higher for outside series; Universal TV scored quick renewals for its two most recent new scripted shows at Netflix, The Man On Inside and Four Seasons.
They are among the string of new Netflix scripted series to get a second season over the past eight months, along with the Warner Bros. TV-produced Untamed and Running Point as well as Dept. Q, Beauty In Black, Ransom Canyon, Forever, North of North, The Vince Staples Show, the animated Devil May Cry and Canadian entries Bet and Geek Girl. Overall, Netflix has renewed almost 20 scripted shows over that period.
The Waterfront‘s first season scored 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its premise: For decades, the Buckley family has ruled Havenport, North Carolina, dominating everything from the local fishing industry to the town’s restaurant scene. But their fishing empire has started to crumble as patriarch Harlan Buckley (McCallany) recovers from two heart attacks, and his wife Belle (Bello) and son Cane (Weary) venture into the deep end to keep the family businesses afloat. As their attempts spiral out of control and into treacherous waters, Harlan steps back in to take command. Facing her own demons, Buckley daughter Bree (Benoist) — an addict in recovery who’s lost custody of her son — finds herself entangled in a complicated relationship that could threaten the family’s future forever.
Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner also star in the series, executive produced by Williamson and Ben Fast for Outerbanks Entertainment, Michael Narducci, and Marcos Siega. Topher Grace guest stars.

Star Trek: Section 31 was the franchise's first-ever streaming-original movie, and reviews were unkind. It currently holds a "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the worst-reviewed Trek movies ever. However, star Michelle Yeoh is sanguine about the film's reception, acknowledging its flaws. Yeoh recently spoke with Collider's Therese Lacson for her role in the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2, and during their conversation, they discussed the actress' last foray into the Star Trekuniverse.
Section 31 was originally intended as a TV series spinning off from Star Trek: Discovery; however, when Yeoh won a Best Actress Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once and subsequently became very busy,...

Netflix may have said goodbye to Ozark, but its spiritual successor is holding the fort — and then some. The Waterfront, the streamer’s new gritty crime drama, has proven to be a major global hit, dominating Netflix’s Top 10 English-language shows list for three straight weeks before finally dropping to No. 2 in its fourth week. The series, which features a sharp ensemble cast and moody slow-burn storytelling in the tradition of Ozark and Bloodline, has pulled in over 36 million views globally and racked up 229 million hours of watch time. While it finally slipped from the top spot this week — replaced by The Sandman Season 2 — The Waterfront’s initial run has been nothing short of a win for Netflix.

Wednesday – Jenna Ortega’s Character And Enid’s Friendship (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Forget the crushes and monsters. The most heartwarming thing Wednesday gave us wasn’t some dark mystery or a dramatic kiss. It was Enid and Wednesday, a rainbow wrapped around a thundercloud, showing us that friendship can be the most powerful plot twist of all.
From the very start of Wednesday, it’s obvious the two roommates couldn’t be more different. The lead character, Wednesday (played by Jenna Ortega), is all gloom and sharp stares. Enid is all glitter and pastel claw polish. Their first few scenes together play out like a classic odd-couple setup. But what sneaks up on you is how this clash of personalities slowly melts into something much deeper, something that feels like home.
Why Wednesday & Enid’s Friendship Worked And How It Quietly Redefines Ride-Or-Die Loyalty
This isn’t a friendship built on fixing.

The latest series starring Mindhunter's Holt McCallany has become a certified streaming sensation only one day after release.
Per Flix Patrol, Netflix's The Waterfront, which premiered on June 19, has already risen to the number one spot on the Top 10 Streaming Series in the United States. Throughout the rest of the week starting on June 16, that same spot was held by Ginny & Georgia, which released its hotly anticipated third season on June 5.
Created by Scream creator Kevin Williamson, who also serves as showrunner on the fast fan-favorite crime drama, The Waterfront stars McCallany as Harlan Buckley, the patriarch of the well-known if objectively dysfunctional Buckley family. Although the family's fishing empire made them the most prominent, not to mention wealthiest family in the fictional seaside town of Havenport, North Carolina, dwindling returns and other financial woes have seen them run their coffers nearly dry. Another day, another Yellowstone knockoff. Netflix’s new drama The Waterfront arrived this week looking like it had just walked off the set of Ozark, borrowed Yellowstone’s boots, and tried to convince us it had invented both. But while Taylor Sheridan’s Montana-set megahit earned its 83% Rotten Tomatoes score the old-fashioned way — by building a richly textured world over five bloody seasons — The Waterfront debuted with a much murkier 67%, and critics are already calling it out for what it is: Netflix by numbers.

Netflix has a new hit topping the streaming charts, and it features a familiar face. After previously reprising his role as Eric Foreman in the ill-fated sequel seriesThat '90s Show, Topher Grace is back on the platform in a guest-starring capacity for the new crime drama series The Waterfront, hailing from Scream veteran Kevin Williamson. Following its launch on Thursday, the show soared to #1 in the U.S. among the streamer's television series, topping, among other things, the recent third season of Ginny & Georgia and the second season of Shane Gillis's Tires. Critics have been a bit mixed on the story of a fishing empire-turned-drug business with a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score, but that hasn't stopped viewers from immediately flocking to the waters.

After the shaky alliance between Buckley patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany) and drug tycoon Grady (Topher Grace) went up in flames in Episode 7, leading to Grady kidnapping Bree (Melissa Benoist), the finale followed the rescue operation to save her — as other members of the family made big moves for power.
Though there were some dire turns, “Lost at Sea” saw Cane (Jake Weary), Shawn (Rafael L. Silva) and Harlan successfully save Bree — and to everyone’s surprise, Diller (Brady Hepner), who’d stowed away in the captor’s boat to help his mother. Though Bree was shot and thrown to the sea before the rest of the family could come to her rescue,...

Crime dramas centered around families are now a dime a dozen. The most popular show of this year so far has been MobLand, which focused on the feud between the Harrigans and the Stevensons and how the former’s fixer, Harry Da Souza, mediated the whole affair before deciding to do what was best for the hand that fed him. Then there was Hound’s Hill, which showed the patriarch of the Glowackis cleaning his town up so as to satiate his desire of being a Godfather-esque figure. The Penguin, the most acclaimed miniseries of 2024, took us into the seedy underbelly of Gotham to chart Oz Cobb’s rise as he made the most of the ongoing feud between the Falcones and the Maronis. From Down Under, we got Territory, which was all about the Lawsons defending their farm by hook or by crook as all the enemies they had made...

“The Waterfront,” the first Netflix original from “Vampire Diaries” and “Scream” producer Kevin Williamson, follows the efforts of the Buckley family to preserve their business legacy in a small beach town of North Carolina, which involves diving head-first into the drug smuggling business. As the family grapples with stepping into criminal activity, the tension also incentivizes complicated dynamics, from father and son to siblings and romantic entanglements.
The show relies on its cast to convey all the nuances at play between the Buckleys and the people around them. Thankfully, Williamson enlisted a collection of TV favorites to embody the show’s complicated subjects.
Here are the characters you need to know in “The Waterfront,” as well as the actors who play them and where you might have seen them before.

‘The Waterfront’ Review: Kevin Williamson’s Netflix Crime Drama Is Overflowing With Plot, Characters
Whoever it was that first decided eight episodes was enough for a suitable TV season really did the medium a disservice. Netflix’s “The Waterfront” is just the latest example.
Created by Kevin Williamson, the drama series is set on the North Carolina coast and centers on the somewhat broken Buckley family, owners of a small fishery empire in a small beach town. Of course, all is not what it seems with the Buckleys. They’re in massive debt, and the only thing to do (aside from sell their waterfront property) is to temporarily go back to their old gig and run drugs in their fishing boat. This is a long Buckley family tradition, but it all immediately goes awry because this time around, they have no idea who they’re really dealing with — more on that later.
Even without the drugs, the Buckleys have a lot going on. Harlan...

This post contains spoilers from The Waterfront season 1 episode 1 from this point forward.
Netflix's gritty drama series The Waterfront might be about the Buckley family, but the opening scene takes us to a ship featuring The Vampire Diaries alums Matthew Davis and Zach Roerig getting held a gunpoint. Curtis (Davis) and Troy (Roerig) are both knocked out, wrapped in a large fishing net, and thrown overboard the ship. Before they're tossed over, one of them begs for their lives, but it's no use. This will come back to haunt the Buckleys... and it does very, very quickly!
The next morning, Cane Buckley (Jake Weary) anxiously text messages Curtis and Troy but receives no response. He tries to put his concerns aside while having dinner with his daughter Savannah (Billie Roy) and wife Peyton (Danielle Campbell). He rushes out the door of their luxury North Carolina home and arrives at the site of a shipwreck.

Margaret Atwood recalls MGM’s straight-to-series order in 2016 to adapt her dystopian classic novel The Handmaid’s Tale as a Hulu series as being a touch risky.
“It was a gamble. And the gamble paid off. Anybody approaching me earlier who said we wanted to make a film about The Handmaid’s Tale, I would have said, ‘Who’s going to watch that?’” she told the second annual Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada gala at the Ritz Carlton in Toronto on Thursday.
“When it came out, a certain number of people felt it was illuminating because, surely, the United States would never, ever do such things,” the acerbic Canadian author, poet and activist said as she picked up the Icon Award at the Ritz Carlton. She talked about the success in adapting her 1985 dystopian novel just as Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale has reached the climax for its sixth and final season,...

Kevin Williamson might be one of the more experienced TV and film producers. He has been involved in so many that it is hard to count them, with the Scream series, Vampire Diaries, and Dawson's Creek possibly standing out.
Now, Williamson (who also wrote the series), Netflix, and all involved in producing the new drama series The Waterfront are set to captivate audiences again. The 8-episode series, based on real events, will premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2025.
The story, which is set in the coastal part of North Carolina (where the filming took place), is a new take on a dysfunctional family, where the fictional Buckley family is in strife over its legacy. With the first two episodes directed by Marcos Siega, the strong cast stars Holt McCallany and Maria Bello.

With less than a month until the premiere, Netflix is starting to unveil more information about its upcoming thriller series The Waterfront. This week, series creator Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) talked to Entertainment Weekly about several aspects of the show and singled out one character — Grady, played by Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3). The new series is set to premiere on June 19.
Grace is widely known for doing comedy — especially the long-running sitcom That 70's Show — and, even though he's done drama and thrillers in his career, you don't necessarily think of him when imagining a character that can give you chills. From the looks of it, this is about to change with The Waterfront. During the interview, Williamson talked about Grace's approach to the character. He stated:
"He brings sort of an unexpectedness to the role. He feels unpredictable. And so we were able to write toward that. So...

Few people know drama like Kevin Williamson knows drama. The prolific screenwriter and creator known for Scream, Dawson's Creek, and The Vampire Diaries(who is also directing Scream 7!) has a track record for thrilling audiences with his wild plots and twisty turns, chockablock with human emotions and shocking consequences. And the same can be said for his latest project, The Waterfront, which was apparently inspired by true events, and features the seemingly forever-fresh-faced Topher Grace as a well-established drug kingpin.
And in the new trailer, released on Thursday by Netflix (the series' streaming home), we get a glimpse at Grace in all his broad-smiled glory, as he gets into business with Mindhunter star Holt McCallany's Harlan Buckley. The series features a lot of familiar Williamson traits, including its coastal North Carolina backdrop, with family drama at the heart of its story.

"If you touch my husband, I will come for you." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for The Waterfront series, a twisted family drama series coming to Netflix in June this summer. Inspired by true events and set against the backdrop of coastal North Carolina, The Waterfront is a brand new series created and written by prolific showrunner Kevin Williamson. The twisty drama plays out over eight episodes that are as much about family dynamics as they are about the lengths people will go to when their legacy is on the line. As their storied North Carolina fishing empire decays, the damaged Buckleys grapple to revive their imperiled maritime heritage. It was filmed on location in Wilmington and Southport, North Carolina. The big ensemble cast features Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner. Making ends meet is difficult nowadays, but adding a drug ring to your flailing business is a surefire way to create more problems than solutions to your woes. You don’t have to take my word for it; just ask the Buckley family. A rich, powerful family with control issues? Welcome back, “Succession.” Sort of.
The Buckley family controls everything down in their corner of Havenport, North Carolina — the name graces restaurants while also supporting a significant fishing industry in the scenic, coastal town — but faces financial trouble in Netflix’s “The Waterfront.”
Father Harlan (Holt McCallany) is recovering from not one, but two heart attacks, and even that won’t keep him from taking the reins when he feels that no one else has what it takes to lead the family. The series comes from “Scream,” “Dawson’s Creek,” and “The Vampire Diaries” showrunner Kevin Williamson.
The family is rounded out by Harlan’s wife Belle (Maria Bello), son Cane (Jake Weary) — who gets a hit in later in the trailer — and daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist). While mother and son do their best to keep the lights on and the Buckley name untarnished,...

Do not mess with Topher Grace — and not just because he was once (the super weird choice to play) Venom.
On Thursday, Netflix released the trailer for upcoming family-drug-dealing drama The Waterfront, which looks sort of like Ozark meets Bloodline (with a bit of Virgin River), set in North Carolina. All eight episodes premiere on June 19.
Kevin Williamson’s (Scream, Dawson’s Creek, The Vampire Diaries) The Waterfront is “inspired by true events,” per Netflix. What true events? We Googled and found nothing — so we asked Netflix directly (twice).
“Kevin pulled from his own real-life upbringing in N.C.,” a spokesperson for the show told The Hollywood Reporter. “It is not a 1:1 adaptation, but drew inspiration from.”
It must have been some upbringing…

Kevin Williamson’s (Scream, Dawson’s Creek, The Vampire Diaries) The Waterfront is “inspired by true events,” per Netflix. What true events? We Googled and found nothing — so we asked Netflix directly (twice).
“Kevin pulled from his own real-life upbringing in N.C.,” a spokesperson for the show told The Hollywood Reporter. “It is not a 1:1 adaptation, but drew inspiration from.”
It must have been some upbringing…

Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. A new Aaa game from a new studio is getting 500,000 sold copies, that’s some real flex! Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is officially doing great, which might not make everyone happy. I’m looking at you, Ubisoft.
If you have been living under a rock, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a new RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive, and the gameplay looks like a mix of Like A Dragon, Persona, and Final Fantasy. Despite such heavy competition within the genre itself, Sandfall Interactive has made its first steps on the holy ground of gaming.
Just like people were unhappy about Baldur’s Gate 3‘s success, a similar kind of story is unfolding with Coe 33. I guess that’s a good sign for becoming a contender for Game of the Year 2025.
