This Day That Year: When Sholay Met Aag
Image
Subhash K Jha in a special edition of his This day That Year feature series focusses on not one but two films… Ramesh Sippy’s classic Sholay that released in 1975 and the 2007 remake by Ram Gopal Varma titled Aag.

Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag is the worst re-make you’re likely to see.Ram Gopal Varma’s remake of Sholay doesn’t claim to have the wherewithal, the stock, substance and spice of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay.

Let’s just call Aag an audacious revisionist version of “Sholay” and be done with it. The biggest mistake we can make while watching Varma go back to his favourite film is to look for signs and symbols from the past. Varma is to blame for doing some sequences as parodic homages to Sippy’s Sholay. Bachchan as Babban does the ‘Kitne aadmi the’ scene like a rude game of Russian roulette with...

After ‘Guns and Thighs’, Ram Gopal Varma releases trailer of new web series ‘Kadapa’
Web SeriesThe director, whose earlier film ‘Raktacharitra’ also dealt with the Rayalaseema Reddys, promises that this series will delve deeper into the subject.Tnm Staff Rgv Kadapa 750 1.jpgYoutube/Trailer ScreenshotRam Gopal Varma, who is no stranger to controversy, is back – this time with his first-ever Telugu web series. On Friday, Rgv unveiled the trailer of the web series based on the faction-ridden violence witnessed in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district. The web series be called Kadapa. The four-minute long, action-packed trailer features some stunning shots, and lots of dead bodies, promising that this series is not for the weak of heart. “Not even a single event or character in this series is fictitious, but because I fear for my life, their names, their place of residence, including the names of villages, have been changed. A few decades ago, people used to live in these homes, which now lie lifeless, like tombs in a graveyard. They too had families, they too laughed, cried, used to get married, give birth to children … But a shapeless devil called ‘Faction’ entered their lives, sucked the blood out of their bodies and threw them away,” the voiceover proclaims. “The goddess called Faction was born in Rayalaseema. If the temple is in Rayalaseema, the sanctum sanctorum is in Kadapa. This is the history of the Rayalaseema Reddys,” the voiceover concludes. Watch the trailer here: On Thursday, Rgv took to Facebook to officially announce the web series. His post reads, "My only objective of entering into the digital world is to be able to tell a story which I otherwise would have never been allowed to tell on a film screen. This will be the first-ever original Telugu web series made for an international audience, titled ‘Kadapa’." This is Rgv's second web series after a Hindi short series on the Mumbai mafia called Guns and Thighs. Giving more details about what Kadapa entails, Rgv wrote, "The title is derived as a summation of what a region stands for in its bloodthirstiness, and a synonym of how violent power affects the internal politics of ambition, ego, greed and one-upmanship. The story is something I have gathered over many years, ever since I first did research for 'Raktacharitra', with my extensive interactions with ex-factionists, their victims, their relatives, and so on." "Some might feel that I have dealt with this subject matter in my earlier film 'Raktacharitra’, but nothing could be further from the truth … In that film, I barely scratched the surface of the truth of the Rayalaseema’s hardcoreness [sic] due to my inconclusive knowledge at that time and also due to various restrictions and threats. Here, in this web series, I decided to tell it the way it is without any fear and [with] complete honesty," Rgv added. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...
