- Chinese literary critic and human rights activist who was incarcerated (2009-17) for advocating political reforms and the end of communist single-party rule in the PRC. He was the recipient of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
- He was the second person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while incarcerated; the first was German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky, who won in 1935 while imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp.
- Played a major role in the Tiananmen Square student protests of June 1989. He and other activists negotiated the safe exit of several hundred demonstrators, and have been credited with saving the protesters' lives.
