Actor Tom Selleck recently finished his long stint as Commissioner Frank Reagan on the hit police procedural series Blue Bloods. However, he is also known for playing Thomas Magnum in the 1980s crime-drama series Magnum, P.I. The series caused Selleck to turn down the Indiana Jones franchise despite being the first choice for the title role.

During an interview, Selleck reflected on being offered the role that eventually went to Harrison Ford. “Harrison Ford is just a better actor”: The Biggest Indiana Jones What If.., Steven Spielberg Cast Tom Selleck as Indy
Image
Whatever praise we have for Harrison Ford is simply not enough. There are really no words that can describe the level of talent the man has. After all, he is both Indiana Jones and Han Solo! Harrison Ford has a variety of iconic roles in his portfolio but it goes without saying that the fedora-wearing globetrotter will always stand out from the rest. It all began with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 and since then, the legacy has only become more and more valuable with time.

It does make us wonder, would the franchise be as successful as it is today even without Harrison Ford or did his undeniable star power prove to be an added benefit to the films? What if another actor was in the lead role? Say, Tom Selleck?

6 broadcast TV cancellations in 2024 we're still salty about
Image
Some cancellations always hurt more than others. That was certainly the case for the broadcast TV shows in 2024. We are still salty about some of those decisions.

We know that some TV shows have to come to an end. The writing is usually on the wall for some of them. The linear ratings are down, or the show just isn’t getting great reviews. However, this year, there were some cancellations that were completely unjustified. Or we lost great shows that just didn’t have the chance to find their audiences.

We’re taking a look back at 2024 and the TV cancellations that hurt the most. We’re not just sad; we’re salty. This is for broadcast only. There are some streaming cancellations that I absolutely hate!

Not Dead Yet

There are very few comedies on TV now. This year has seen a few hits on NBC, but other networks have struggled.

Tom Sellecks Magnum Pi Has A Gritty New Replacement With Apple TV+s Hit 93% Rt Crime Show
Image
Tom Selleck's Magnum, P.I. was one of the most beloved shows of its time, and those who wish it could return - generic remake notwithstanding - will be delighted to know that Apple TV+ finally has the perfect replacement 36 years after the crime show ended. Selleck's Thomas Magnum was one of the iconic TV characters that defined the 80s, and while it would take quite some doing for the show's modern-day equivalent to leave the same size legacy, that doesn't stop it from being a great spiritual successor.

The very fact that Magnum, P.I. ran for 8 seasons is just one piece of evidence that it was continually received very well. It may not be the greatest show in the world by today's standards, but some of the best procedural TV shows of all time arguably wouldn't exist without Tom Selleck's impressive stint as Thomas Magnum. That being said, the...

Tom Selleck Unrecognizable After ‘Blue Bloods’ Cancelation

Tom Selleck has openly criticized CBS for canceling his hit TV show Blue Bloods. However, it seems he has moved on. Recently, Selleck was seen out, and he looked almost unrecognizable from when fans last saw him on the hit police procedural.

Tom Selleck Steps Out Looking Very Different

The Only Main Actors Still Alive From 1980's Magnum P.I.
Image
The 1980s are often viewed as a pop cultural wasteland: a post-disco, style-over-substance hellscape where music videos turned vacuous bands and singers into chart-topping titans, blockbuster-chasing executives drained films of personality and artistic merit, and television pandered to a benumbed viewership with hacky sitcoms, formula dramas, and risible nighttime soaps. This was only half-true.

There was a good bit of dreck polluting the multiplexes and the airwaves throughout the eight-year Reagan era (and the Bush I hangover), but you'd have to be a killjoy to have lived through that time and turned up your nose at the bevy of brilliant artists who were working at their absolute peak. Prince, Spielberg, Streep, Selleck ... yes, Selleck. Tom Selleck.

For eight immensely entertaining seasons, Tom Selleck was the handsomest, charmingest, mustachioed-est private detective on television as Magnum P.I. The creation of small-screen hit makers Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson, the...

While Selleck, who will be set to turn 80 when the last episode of Blue Bloods debuts on CBS in December 2024, admitted that hed become exhausted from Magnum, P.I. by the time the series ended, he publicly pleaded with CBS to extend the television life of Blue Bloods for at least one more season.

Tom Selleck Had One Specific Reason for His Dislike of Magnum, P.I.'s 'Really Sh-tty' Title

Tom Selleck wasn't a fan of the title Magnum, P.I., believing it to be "really sh-tty". Selleck almost played Indiana Jones instead of Harrison Ford, but couldn't due to his contract for Magnum, P.I. The Tragic Real-Life History Of The 'Airwolf' Helicopter

Today's television shows just can't match the coolness of an '80s action series. Four decades ago, nothing was more badass than a mustachioed Tom Selleck in the original Magnum P.I., Don Johnson in a white suit on Miami Vice, the chemistry between the A-Team, or the black leather jacket David Hasselhoff wore on Knight Rider. It wasn't enough, however, to have a cool star. An '80s action TV series also needed a vehicle that was just as cool to match them. Thomas Magnum had that sweet red Ferrari, James Crockett had a white Ferrari, the A-Team had a Gmc Vandura driven by B.A. Baracus (Mr. T), and Michael Knight had a jet-black Trans Am named K.I.T.T. that could talk. Throw in the likes of The Dukes of Hazzards' orange Dodge Charger and The Fall Guy's Gmc Sierra, and you have an era where...

'A Sh-tty Title': Tom Selleck Reflects on Magnum P.I. Title in New Memoir
Image
Magnum, P.I. was a huge hit in the 1980s, giving star Tom Selleck his big break in Hollywood. Despite enjoying his time on the show, Selleck shared in his new memoir, You Never Know, that he disliked the show's title for one specific reason.

Per TVLine, Selleck wrote in his memoir that the beloved crime drama series, created by Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson, was originally titled Magnum. At that time, the title character's full name was also different, being Harry Magnum instead of Thomas Magnum. However, over concerns that Magnum and Harry Magnum were too similar to Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry in Magnum Force, CBS and Bellisario opted to re-title the show Magnum, P.I., since Selleck's title character worked as a private investigator. Although a minor change, Selleck thought Magnum, P.I. "was a shitty title" because he knew, from his brief time in Hawaii, that "P.

He’s currently not attached to any new projects, but who knows? After all, Selleck didn’t start his career in a traditional way, as he once explained to us while talking about his early days. Magnum P.I. Reboot Showrunner Reveals Why Tom Selleck Never Appeared on the New Series
Image
Tom Selleck's absence from the Magnum P.I. reboot was never a serious plan but rather a light-hearted idea that fans hoped for. Selleck's successful post-Magnum P.I. career made it difficult for him to make a guest appearance on the reboot. The absence of Selleck's Magnum in the reboot is a respectful acknowledgement of his evolving legacy and the complexities of television production.

Magnum P.I. reboot attempted to recapture the magic of the original 1980s series starring Tom Selleck as the suave Hawaii-based private investigator Thomas Magnum. Yet, despite fans' hopes and speculations, a cameo from Selleck never materialized. The brains behind the reboot, Eric Guggenheim, recently provided insight into the matter.

Guggenheim admitted in a forthright interview with TVLine post-finale that the notion of Selleck's guest appearance was more of a light-hearted musing than an actual plan. He remarked, This revelation might come as a surprise to...

TVLine recently sat down with Magnum P.I. reboot showrunner Eric Guggenheim following the airing of the series finale. He was asked why Selleck never ended up appearing on the show, perhaps as Robin Masters,...
