Quotes

  • [on shooting Déflagration (2018) in real coal mines]: "The filming took place first around Rakovnik. The underground space fascinated me. It was one big adventure in which we didn't enjoy much light, because we spent a lot of time under the surface, at a depth of 100 meters. Even so, it was a completely different world. It wasn't hot, we didn't enjoy it until we were eleven hundred meters underground in Ostrava. There we were already pouring because it was so hot, thirty degrees Celsius. In Rakovník it was only eleven degrees, so it was quite cold. That's why we were always made up to look like we were pouring, and we were lubricated with special oil. We pretended to be sweaty while gnashed our teeth a bit."
  • [on his father Richard Hes]: "Dad wasn't with us much. There are advantages and disadvantages to carrying his name, depending on your attitude. I try to see it more as an advantage, although I used to struggle quite a bit with it. I mean, my dad was pretty damn good too, he set the bar pretty high, and I'd like to be half as successful at what I do as he was. And did you know that my dad originally wanted to be an actor? Not many people know that, but it was his secret wish. So I'm imaginatively fulfilling it. The advantage is that my dad's name is not so famous on film as it is in the world of dance. If I had gone the dance route, I probably would have faced more obstacles."
  • [on the consequences of playing a coal miner in Déflagration (2018)]: "We were blacked out everywhere. Of course, we all counted on being blackened, but it was difficult. I don't even know what they used to lubricate us. For a month or two after the shoot, I still had black in my pores, in my hair and in my eyes. Eventually I just had to have a full cosmetic cleanse from my chest to the roots of my hair to get rid of it."
