Last year's "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" seemed like a new low for the demonic hero. Shot for a low $20 million budget with little known actors, the movie's trailers suggested even the film's meager funds had been stretched thin. The dull as dishwater color grading was especially disappointing for a movie adapting comics known for their striking art. "The Crooked Man" ultimately skipped a theatrical release in the United States, going straight to VOD on October 8, 2024.
It seemed like that would be the ignominious end of the "Hellboy" films for a while — or maybe not, because Hulu viewers are coming to Big Red's rescue. According to FlixPatrol, "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" debuted at #1 on the platform stateside on March 10, 2025, and stayed there before dropping to #4 as of March 13.

Mike Mignola’s award-winning comic franchise “Hellboy” has been adapted into four motion pictures now, and this may be a controversial statement, but there’s never been a bad one. Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy” movies were ambitious and beautiful, especially “The Golden Army,” which ranks among his finest works. Neil Marshall’s “Hellboy” reboot stripped away the classiness and focused instead on the series’ freewheeling wildness, an unfocused but enjoyably weird adaptation. It isn’t popular but that doesn’t make it bad. Give it time. It’ll find its audience.
The new reboot, Brian Taylor’s “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will need more than time to find its fanbase. The cheapest entry in the series (by a wide margin) was released in Europe to little fanfare a month ago, then dumped on VOD in the United States this week when nobody was looking. Hellboy is a promising property that’s periodically stumbled with its live-action adaptations. There’s such a rich world to pull from here that brilliantly mashes together Lovecraftian horror, pulp detective fiction, superhero storytelling, and sprawling adventures. At the same time, it takes a delicate hand to properly bring all these elements together into something that’s not only coherent, but entertaining. Hellboy’s cinematic offerings continue to mutate and hold a mirror up to changing pop culture trends. Hellboy versus witches in a haunted house, from the director of Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, should be an easy home run. The verdict on the latest attempt at bringing Hellboy into live-action, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is in. And while it may not have resulted in the worst effort so far, fans of the character and the comic are likely to be disappointed nonetheless, as Hellboy: The Crooked Man has achieved a rating of just 29% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
This puts it in the penultimate position in the franchise, with 2019s Hellboy starring David Harbour infamously standing at just 17% on the Tomatometer. Both The Crooked Man and the 2019 outing fall well below the movies made by Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, whose first movie stands at a certified fresh 81%, while the sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, fares even better at 86%.
The criticisms leveled at Hellboy: The Crooked Man begin with Leslie Felperin of The Guardian, who gives the movie just 2/5 and slams the script and the cast.

Made before the current super hero cycle reached sickening saturation, Guillermo del Toro’s two films Hellboy in 2004 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008 introduced the world to Mike Mignola’s half demon anti-hero that first appeared way back in Dark Horse Comics in the 90’s.
Starring the perfectly cast Ron Perlman the movies blended del Toro’s eye for horror with equal parts of action and felt fresh and exciting at a time when comic book movies were still very hit and miss.
Never completing their intended trilogy, both Perlman and del Toro left the character behind when the production company upset them both. It wasn’t until 2019 that Hellboy returned, this time with David Harbour in the big red suit with Neil Marshall at the helm.
Seemingly the ideal man to take over the blood drenched reigns and drag the character into darker less family friendly realms,...

Hellboy: The Crooked Man's unconventional release has seen it arrive in a seemingly random list of countries around the world; in the U.S., it's bypassing theaters altogether and will instead head straight to Digital platforms early next month.
The movie was reportedly made for a relatively small sum, meaning there's at least a chance it turns a profit. Will that be anywhere near enough to warrant a sequel? Seeing as it's skipping theaters and isn't receiving overly positive reviews, we're not banking on it.
Apparently, neither are the movie's producers. We're used to comic book movies having some extra at the very end to set up future stories but can confirm today that Hellboy: The Crooked Man does not feature any post-credits scenes.
In fact, there's nothing - not even a "Hellboy will return" - to suggest there are plans in place for Big Red moving forward. Then again,...

With Hellboy: The Crooked Man randomly showing up in theaters across the world (it arrived in the UK today), fans of Big Red in North America have been wondering when they'll get to watch the movie.
Reviews haven't been great but this unconventional release has done little to generate buzz or discussion about a reboot which, at least based on what we've seen, is miles ahead of 2019's disappointing effort starring David Harbour.
Well, IGN has just dropped a spooky new clip from Hellboy: The Crooked Man and confirmed that, yes, the movie is skipping a theatrical release in the U.S. in favour of a Digital debut.
According to the site, the plan is for it to debut on October 8 for $19.99 as a two-week exclusive to "all electronic sell-through partners" (meaning platforms like Amazon and Fandango). Then, it hits VOD on October 22 for the low, low price of $6.99.

A boring nemesis in a top hat bops around cackling while a wan Hellboy is enlisted to save a local man’s sweetheart in this inexplicable successor
Fans of comic books, 00s horror and Guillermo del Toro will recall the latter’s crack at launching a mass-market franchise with Hellboy in 2004, a peppy blend of pulp genre thrills, wisecracks and old-school effects with a very del Torovian occult-vibe. The casting in the title role of Ron Perlman as the half-demon/half-human shorn-horned, red-skinned, wisecracking, cigar-smoking good guy, along with Selma Blair as his pale but decidedly interesting sidekick/love interest Liz, is what made the first film, and to a lesser degree its successor Hellboy II: The Golden Army, sing. But the unholy mess of a reboot from 2019, this time with a not-unlikeable David Harbour in the massive Right Hand of Doom glove, barely made coin, which makes this even lower-budgeted successor somewhat inexplicable.

Is the third time the charm? The latest Hellboy reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is all set to debut in the United Kingdom tomorrow (it has already debuted in some other international markets) and the first reviews have now begun to trickle through. So, was this years Hellboy effort worth another reboot? Lets find out.
Dan Jolin of Empire sadly did not think so, awarding the comic book outing a lackluster 2/5 and likening the movie to a lost pilot for a 90s monster-of-the-week TV show that never made it to air. Though they did praise The Crooked Man for achieving what it does with lesser budget.
Valiant though this low-budget attempt to reclaim Hellboy may be, it sadly lacks the storytelling and stylistic savvy to rise above its all-too-obvious budgetary limitations.

The latest Hellboy film, titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will debut on Video on Demand platforms in the United States on October 7, according to its producers. Directed by Brian Taylor, the movie follows Hellboy and a rookie Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense agent as they investigate a community of witches in 1950s Appalachia.
Jack Kesy takes on the role of Hellboy, previously played by Ron Perlman and David Harbour. He stars alongside Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, and Hannah Margetson. Christopher Golden, Mike Mignola, and Brian Taylor collaborated on the screenplay. Mignola created the original Hellboy comic books.
While American audiences will be able to watch it at home, the movie will show for one week starting September 27 in select UK theaters. Production finished in May after beginning earlier in 2023 in Bulgaria. A quick production schedule may aim to attract interest following the poorly received 2019 reboot.

The latest attempt to reboot the Hellboy franchise, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, finally gets a U.S. release date. But it might not be quite what you were expecting. Rather than debuting in theaters as it will in the U.K. later this week, the comic book movie reboot will instead seemingly go straight to video on demand (VOD) in the United States, with the likes of Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and others now revealing that Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be available to rent or buy from October 07, 2024 9:00 Pm Pdt. Hellboy: The Crooked Man has had a highly unconventional release, arriving in a handful of counties across the globe before hitting UK cinemas this Friday.
While the movie was never particularly highly anticipated, we'd expected some sort of theatrical release as, with a lower budget, it's possible enough fans would have turned out to make Brian Taylor's reboot a moderate hit.
Instead, it seems the movie may have failed to find a distributor in the U.S. as various VOD platforms are now showing Hellboy: The Crooked Man as being available for pre-order with a Tuesday, October 8 release.
That means it will go up at 12am Et on the 8th but at 9pm Pt on October 7. A limited theatrical release is still possible but, as we expected, this movie is largely bypassing the big screen and going straight to Digital (which is the equivalent these days to a direct-to-dvd...

There doesn't appear to be an "official" review embargo in place for Hellboy: The Crooked Man, but with the movie being released at different times across the globe (we're still not 100% sure when it arrives in the U.S.), the first wave of reviews has just hit.
They're mixed, yes, but tend to be more positive than negative...so far at least, anyway! A lot of outlets still need to weigh in and we're a long way off from getting a Rotten Tomatoes score but it sounds like we should at least consider giving Brian Taylor's take on Big Red a chance.
We'll start with the worst review of the bunch from The Hollywood Handle; in a 1.5*/5* review, the site says Hellboy: The Crooked Man "initially gives the impression, through its first act and part of the second, that it knows its place and embraces its trashy style. However,...

Hellboy's Mike Mignola recently reflected on the film franchise spawned by his creation, revealing his frustrations with Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The acclaimed Hellboy creator stated he was "unhappy with the movie" and that the three months he spent collaborating with Guillermo del Toro "didn't really impact" the 2008 sequel.
In an interview with Screen Rant for his upcoming documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, Mignola discussed his experience working on The Golden Army and his dislike for the film. "I like being left alone to produce work that I can control. The experience I had on the second movie, I spent three months working on (The Golden Army), and it didn't really impact that film very much at all," he said.

Total Film has shared a new poster for Hellboy: The Crooked Man, giving us another look at Jack Kesy's take on the fan-favourite demonic hero.
Kesy is the third actor to play the title character in live-action, following Ron Perlman and David Harbour.
Helmed by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Crank co-director Brian Taylor and starring, the trailers make it very clear that this latest Hellboy movie will lean more into the comic's horror elements than previous adaptations.
The 3-issue Crooked Man miniseries was a period adventure set in 1956 which saw Big Red attempt to retrieve a man named Tom's soul from a powerful demon deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Though this movie may make a few changes, the trailers suggest that it's going to stick pretty close to the source material.

Ketchup Entertainment’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man once again takes the franchise in a new direction, with Jack Kesy (12 Strong) taking over the title role this time around.
Oddly enough, however, the film’s official UK poster refers to Hellboy: The Crooked Man as “the fourth installment in the global franchise.” Technically true, of course, but usually a franchise reboot of this sort isn’t labeled that way. In any event, check out the UK art below.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man comes to UK theaters on September 27, with no United States release date announced at this time. We tip our hats to Total Film for sharing the UK art today.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man has finally received a release date. A new post for the upcoming reboot has revealed when the movie will be hitting theaters... in the United Kingdom.
Unfortunately for Hellboy fans in the United States, The Crooked Man is still without a theatrical release date. However, there's a good chance that the movie may also end up releasing in the States on or around Sept. 27, 2024, although that remains purely speculative at this time. The new poster for The Crooked Man, shared by Total Film on X, shows Jack Kesy's Hellboy with his gun drawn and looking to his side where the titular Crooked Man is shown lurking among the trees. "Witness the beginning of all evil," reads the tagline on the poster.

Mike Mignola's iconic comic book hero is coming back to the big screen with Hellboy: The Crooked Man. The Dark Horse Comics series centered on the titular half-demon was first adapted for live-action with Guillermo del Toro's eponymous 2004 movie, which scored largely positive reviews and was a modest box office hit. This, in turn, spawned a media franchise, including a direct sequel again helmed by del Toro, two animated movies featuring Ron Perlman reprising his role, and a 2019 Hellboy reboot led by David Harbour, which was poorly received and bombed at the box office.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man serves as the second reboot of the franchise, adapting the titular limited comic book series more directly. The story finds Hellboy and rookie Bprd agent, Bobbie Jo Song, as they become stranded in Appalachia in the 1950s following a train crash. Along the way,...

Hellboy: The Crooked Man's second trailer helped change a lot of minds and, while there's still not a huge amount of buzz surrounding the reboot, it at least feels like there's a chance it will surprise fans.
Weirdly, no release date has been announced for the movie but the cat might be out of the bag courtesy of an international distributor. They say the movie is heading to Indian theaters on Friday, September 13.
PVR Inox Pictures is "the largest independent distributor of foreign language films in India," and if it's being released there as soon as next month, we have to believe this date will apply to other international locations as well (though August 30 is another date we've seen floating around online).
We'd say it's likely that, despite releasing in theaters overseas, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is getting a Digital release in the U.S. and may skip the big screen altogether.

The buzz surrounding Hellboy: The Crooked Man was initially very negative; however, it feels like the tide has started to change, particularly with it now clear that it's meant as a low-budget horror tale rather than a major superhero blockbuster.
Today, we have some new images of Jack Kesy's Big Red to share with you and it's fair to say the character looks vastly more impressive here than in those early sneak peeks.
Speaking of which, these promo photos seemingly confirm that we're getting a new trailer on August 30. Hellboy: The Crooked Man still doesn't have a confirmed release date but we'd imagine the idea is for it to hit Digital or streaming platforms in time for Halloween.
However, if the budget for this reboot was low enough, there's every chance it will find its way into theaters (its 2019 predecessor grossed $55.1 million worldwide after costing a reported $50 million).

Like The Crow, there's not exactly a huge amount of excitement surrounding Hellboy: The Crooked Man. With only Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker: Folie à Deux heading our way this year from Marvel and DC, 2024 is a good opportunity for those more obscure characters to draw the interest of superhero fans.
Unfortunately, neither of them looks particularly good if the trailers are anything to go by and the odds are heavily stacked against The Crooked Man. Guillermo del Toro's movies remain beloved and 2019's failed reboot has already raised questions about whether Hellboy can work on screen.
In an interview with Total Film, director Brian Taylor (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) made it clear he isn't looking to imitate what's come before.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man star Jack Kesy revealed why he didnt feel too pressured about playing the newest version of the titular anti-hero. The iconic character was previously portrayed by Ron Perlman in Guillermo del Toros Hellboy movies, and by David Harbour in the 2019 reboot.
Speaking with GamesRadar+, Kesy expressed his confidence about his portrayal of Hellboy in The Crooked Man movie, revealing that hes ready for whatever the fans and haters will say about his performance. "You know what, I love a good challenge, I've always been like that, so I was excited to take it on," he said. "Everyone, the supporters, the haters, whoever, bring them on. You know it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You always get an opportunity to play people similar to yourself, but when do you get a chance to be in full prosthetic, playing iconic characters? The excitement topped everything."

Actor Jack Kesy is taking on a major role by playing the titular hero in Hellboy: The Crooked Man. After the experience of bringing that character to life, Kesy is intrigued by the idea of next portraying DC's most iconic supervillain.
In an interview with Geek Vibes Nation to speak about Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Kesy was asked about which comic book character he'd ideally like to take on next. After giving it a moment of thought, Kesy picked The Joker, Batman's arch-nemesis and one of comic book history's most well-known characters. Kesy explained that this was because he knows it'd be an incredibly challenging role to pull off, acknowledging how Heath Ledger put in an iconic performance in The Dark Knight shortly before his tragic death.

The Hellboy franchise will undergo another reboot this year, and The Killer and 12 Strong star Jack Kesy has been chosen to play the titular paranormal investigator in Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Kesy will be the third actor to star as the Demonic comic book character, following in the giant footsteps of Ron Perlman and David Harbour. But, while he may have some big boots to fill, Kesy has teased how The Crooked Man will set itself apart from its predecessors: lean into horror.
"It's definitely very horror. It's more faithful to Mike Mignola's comics than anything before, so Mike's very excited. You know, it's literally pulled from the comic book almost frame by frame... It's grounded, it's darker, it's rated R, it's spookier, it's grimier. It's what I think Mike intended for it to be.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be its own take on Mike Mignola's beloved comic book character. In a new interview, director Brian Taylor explained why he made sure The Crooked Man didn't replicate anything from the previous three live-action movies.
Speaking with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Taylor teased that The Crooked Man will be "completely different" from anything fans have seen in a previous Hellboy movie. "We didnt go into this referencing any of the other movies. We went into it referencing absolutely one thing, and that is the original Mike Mignola comic book. We wanted to take The Crooked Man and adapt it faithfully," the director explained. "That means its a period piece, it's a younger Hellboy, and it has no relation to the other films."

A second trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been released online after debuting during San Diego Comic-Con, and while our first look at the movie received a bit of a mixed response (we're probably being kind there) from fans of the beloved character, we can see this footage going over a lot better.
Helmed by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Crank co-director Brian Taylor and starring Jack Kesy as the demonic hero, The Crooked Man definitely seems to be leaning more into the horror aspect of the comic than the previous adaptations.

Though this movie may make a few changes, the trailers suggest that it's going to stick pretty close to the source material.

The first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man was released at the start of this month and the response has been mixed at best. Now, we have runtime news and that may or may not bode well for this new take on the character starring Jack Kesy.
According to reliable runtime leaker @Cryptic4KQual, it will clock in at a mere 1 hour, 39 minutes.
With superhero movies, that's typically an indication they're not very good. Then again, this is a lower-budgeted project and could be a smaller self-contained story which isn't quite as CG-heavy as the movies starring Ron Perlman and David Harbour.
At least we know Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be a relatively breezy affair, anyway, and there's every chance it's going to exceed expectations when it finally arrives in theaters.

The first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man received a mixed response from fans of Big Red and something tells us this new look at Jack Kesy as the title character won't change many minds.
While this approach to the iconic hero is in line with the comics, it feels a little low-budget. David Harbour's take went much heavier on prosthetics and didn't look much better, to be fair. However, the original big screen iteration dreamed up by Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman remains beloved.
It would be wrong not to give Hellboy: The Crooked Man a fair shot, of course, and it will be interesting to see whether it exceeds expectations later this year (it's mid-July and we still don't have a confirmed release date).
Last October, we learned that Ketchup Entertainment acquired the reboot; for those of you who may not be aware, they're the studio...

Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films were unique entries in the superhero landscape during the 2000s when Marvel and DC were starting to dominate the genre. The character was almost unknown compared to X-Men, Spider-Man, or Batman whose films were doing great at the box office at the time. Nonetheless, del Toro created something special with the two films with Ron Pearlman in the titular role.
Ron Pearlman played Hellboy in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy | Sony Pictures Releasing
The IP was rebooted in 2019 with David Harbour taking over the role from Pearlman. The film was a colossal failure and was a significant step down from the greatness of del Toro’s films. Hellboy is getting a second reboot from Brian Taylor but fans are not impressed with how the new film looks and are concerned that it will be worse than the 2019 reboot.
