Wendi McLendon-Covey is a very funny woman. That’s a statement backed up by facts. She starred as Beverly in ABC’s “The Goldbergs” for 10 seasons — a runtime that seems downright shocking in an era dominated by two to three season hits — and has starred in every kind of buzzy comedy from mainstream blockbusters like “Bridesmaids” to ambitious critical darlings like “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” This is all to say that McLendon-Covey knows comedy.
And right now she’s frustrated by it.
“I want to choose my words carefully. I’m an enthusiastic TV watcher and I love comedies. But can we take big swings again?” McLendon-Covey asked TheWrap. “Audiences are getting bored, and they are way more sophisticated than we think they are.”
McLendon-Covey cited Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s 2009 Comedy Central show “Broad City” as one of the “top five funniest things I’ve ever seen.

The new spin-off The Ones Who Live avoids the overused hero or child savior trope, focusing on Rick's struggle to reunite with his family. The series introduces exciting new characters, exploring survival and tough decisions in a post-apocalyptic world. While other shows in the franchise rely on the hero trope, The Ones Who Live cleverly avoids this angle, adding depth to Rick's journey home.
The Walking Dead isn’t the only show to rely on a particular overused trope. Call it the hero or child savior story, the father figure or daddy (mommy) role. It’s central to shows like The Last of Us; it’s the focus of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and is even part of the story in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

In a sad bit of coincidence, the Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center honored its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday night, just hours after the passing of its namesake and inspiration, the legendary Norman Lear.
Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear. Hulu's streaming series, This Fool depicts working-class Latinos in South Los Angeles in hilarious fashion. In season 2, the old-school cholo Luis (Frankie Quinones) and his cousin Julio (Chris Estrada) switch roles with one enjoying life as a slacker and the other wanting more out of life in the hood. Costume designer Rocio Estrada says she brings authenticity through the wardrobe and shops locally from mom-and-pop stores in the Los Angeles area.

Those fools from the hood are back in season 2 of the extremely funny Hulu series, This Fool. The irreverent comedy starring Chris Estrada, Frankie Quinones, and Michael Imperioli, perfectly captures life in South Central. The quirky characters decide to open up a new coffee shop, "Mugs Not Thugs" and of course, there are shenanigans that will have you rolling on the floor although the laughs are not as consistent as last season.

If I have one complaint about the critically acclaimed first season of Hulu's "This Fool," it's how masculine it is. Yes, there are a handful of women characters, but we don't see much of their interiority or get their fully formed individual storylines. They are all constricted to relationship roles - the main character's mom and his girlfriend. My issue lies in the show's outlook as well - it's a decidedly male aesthetic. To be clear, "This Fool" isn't a misogynistic show by any means, just one focused on a guy and his cousin.
The problem, of course, is that male creators, directors, and actors over-index in movies and TV. They've long been able to share their perspectives with the world. This gets even more complicated when you layer in race and ethnicity. Latinas are among the least represented segments of the population when compared to our actual numbers in the US.

Ayo Edebiri took home the prize for best supporting performance in a new scripted series at the Independent Spirit Awards for her role in The Bear.
“I didn’t really prepare any remarks and my manager gave me a piece of paper,” Edebiri began her acceptance speech. “I just want to say, I’m really grateful. Yeah, this is really nice and very cool.”
She went on to say it was important for her to see a room — er, tent — full of people who look like and feel like her.
“I grew up, and there weren’t people who looked like me or felt like me,” Edebiri continued. “This is really nice because I’m in a room full of a lot of people, who I really admire and looked up to, but there’s also a lot of people who look like me and feel like me, and that’s really nice.

Great news for fans of Chris Estrada, the comedian’s new series, based on his own life and experiences, is all set to premiere today! The show, called This Fool, not only stars Estrada, but also has him as one of the series co-creators, writers, and executive producers. Other executive producers include Fred Armisen and Jonathan Groff. Armisen is known for his work as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2002 to 2013 and his work on the IFC sketch comedy Portlandia. Groff is known to Broadway fans as King George in the Tony-winning musical Hamilton and he is also the voice of Kristoff in Frozen. All this talent behind the show should bode well for This Fool. There’s plenty of talent in front of the camera as well, as, in addition to Estrada, the show also features the acting talents of Frankie Quinones, Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), Michelle Ortiz...

The basics of “This Fool” are straightforward and familiar enough. Hulu’s new comedy stars stand-up comedian Chris Estrada as Julio, a 30 year-old who lives with his strict mother (Laura Patalano) and not-so-secretly badass grandmother (Julia Vera). He’s restless in a job he likes just enough to keep; he pines for his wild card ex-girlfriend, Maggie (Michelle Ortiz), even though he knows they’re probably terrible for each other. He resents his cousin, Luis (Frankie Quinones), who represents his opposite in just about every way. He’s bored and confused about where he wants his life to go, but not so motivated that he’s making any moves towards fixing anything, really.
Needless to say, TV’s no stranger to such 30-year-old dilemmas. So “This Fool” — co-created by Estrada and “Corporate” producers Pat Bishop, Matt Ingrebretson, and Jake Weisman — is smart to lean in to what sets itself apart...

There’s a scene in the first episode of Hulu’s This Fool that lays out in efficient detail just what sort of dynamic we’re dealing with here. It’s morning in the Lopez household, and Julio (series co-creator Chris Estrada) is indulging in his morning coffee ritual: hand-ground beans, a gooseneck kettle, a Chemex. His cousin Luis (Frankie Quiñones), meanwhile, dumps a pile of instant coffee into a mug, shoves it into the microwave, and calls it a day.
Theirs is the sort of odd-couple relationship that’s been sustaining comedy since at least, well, The Odd Couple — and it’s one winning enough here to keep This Fool coasting on an even keel through the mean(ish) streets of South L.A.
As This Fool begins, Julio is in a comfortable, if slightly dispiriting, rut. At 30, he’s still living...

While considering the winning new Hulu comedy This Fool, the hardest question to answer is this: Who is the titular fool?
One possibility is Julio, played by comedian Chris Estrada, who borrowed aspects of his own life to co-create the show with Pat Bishop, Jake Weisman, and Matt Ingebretson. Julio is in his early thirties, still living at home in South Central L.A. with his mother Esperanza (Laura Patalano) and grandmother Maria (Julia Vera). He is in the perpetual thrall of his troublemaking ex-girlfriend Maggie (Michelle Ortiz), and is...
