La Mquina's Marco Ramirez On Teaming With Bernal & Luna, Keeping The Show In Spanish And One-Take Sequences
Image
Marco Ramirez is breaking out into the world of sports dramas with La Mquina. Having begun his career as a writer on the Emmy-nominated and winning dramas Sons of Anarchy and Orange is the New Black, Ramirez began making a name for himself in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a writer for Daredevil, as well as the co-showrunner of season 2 with Douglas Petrie, before going on to be the co-creator and showrunner for Netflix's MCU crossover, The Defenders. More recently, Ramirez was also the co-developer of Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot.

La Mquina centers on the story of its titular character, Esteban Osuna, a boxer on the verge of being past his prime and gearing up for retirement to spend more time with his children and ex-wife after suffering a heavy loss. After his best friend and manager, Andy Lujan, convinces him to take part...

La Mquina's Gael Garca Bernal & Diego Luna On Co-Developing Sports Drama And Their Physical Transformations
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Childhood friends Gael Garca Bernal and Diego Luna are reuniting for the moving sports drama La Mquina. The Mexican-born creative duo have frequently partnered with one another on screen throughout their careers, including for the Oscar-nominated classic Y tu mam tambin and Carlos Cuarn's well-received directorial debut Rudy y Cursi, while also co-founding the production company Canana Films. In recent years, both Bernal and Luna have found success in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises with their roles in Werewolf by Night and both Rogue One and Andor.

Bernal and Luna serve as the co-developers of the story for La Mquina, while also starring in the miniseries as Esteban Osuna and Andy Lujan. Bernal's eponymous boxer is a former sports star considering retirement after a devastating loss, only for his manager and best friend, Luna's Andy, to convince him...

Gael García Bernal at an event for Bad Santa (2003)
About 20 years ago, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diega Luna collaborate on Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Y tu mama también’. This tantalising portrait of youthful energy helped all their careers soar higher. Now, the two actors have reunited on ‘La Máquina’, a boxing drama series on Hulu that follows an ageing boxer and his manager and close friend. It explores the corruption in this profession while offering a journey through the minds of their characters. Besides Garcia Bernal and Luna, the miniseries also stars Eiza Gonzalez, Lucia Mendez, Karina Gidi, and Andres Delgado in key supporting roles.

Spoilers Ahead

La Máquina (Hulu Miniseries) Recap:

La Mquina Review: Frantic Boxing Series Is More Uncut Gems Than Rocky
Image
23 years after they starred together in Y Tu Mama Tambien, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna return in Hulu's La Mquina, for a completely different type of conflict. Once more cast as long-time friends with a complex dynamic as they were in Alfonso Cuarn's coming-of-age drama, the Mexican acting duo and frequent collaborators are again on strong form.

Far removed from the guts and glory spirit of the Rocky franchise - the torch-bearer when it comes to screen boxing stories, of course - La Mquina is an increasingly claustrophobic drama set around the world of boxing. Unafraid of dipping into the realms of farce, the miniseries has the characteristic political undertones of many of Garcia Bernal and Luna's other projects, but focused on the microcosmic target of corruption, deceit, and disaster in the sporting world as the backdrop of two men fighting to gain control of their lives and legacies.

Gael García Bernal & Eiza González in 'La Máquina' Boxer Series Trailer
Image
"If we're doomed, we're doomed together." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for a new series titled La Máquina (which just translates to The Mask) created by TV writer Marco Ramirez. It's also produced by and stars Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna through their own production company, with a streaming debut this October on Hulu. "Winning has a price." The sports series follows an aging boxer whose crafty manager secures one last shot at a title - with a fight coming up in 12 weeks. But if they want to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force and the boxer's own ailing mind... The cast features Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Eiza González, Jorge Perugorría, Andrés Delgado, and Karina Gidi, Dariam Coco + Lucía Méndez. This really makes me want to recommend Gael García Bernal's wrestling film Cassandro. The series looks pretty generic until the psychological thriller elements kick in.
