Marco Ramirez is breaking out into the world of sports dramas with La Mquina. Having begun his career as a writer on the Emmy-nominated and winning dramas Sons of Anarchy and Orange is the New Black, Ramirez began making a name for himself in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a writer for Daredevil, as well as the co-showrunner of season 2 with Douglas Petrie, before going on to be the co-creator and showrunner for Netflix's MCU crossover, The Defenders. More recently, Ramirez was also the co-developer of Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot.

Childhood friends Gael Garca Bernal and Diego Luna are reuniting for the moving sports drama La Mquina. The Mexican-born creative duo have frequently partnered with one another on screen throughout their careers, including for the Oscar-nominated classic Y tu mam tambin and Carlos Cuarn's well-received directorial debut Rudy y Cursi, while also co-founding the production company Canana Films. In recent years, both Bernal and Luna have found success in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises with their roles in Werewolf by Night and both Rogue One and Andor.

Now, the two actors have reunited on ‘La Máquina’, a boxing drama series on Hulu that follows an ageing boxer and his manager and close friend. Once more cast as long-time friends with a complex dynamic as they were in Alfonso Cuarn's coming-of-age drama, the Mexican acting duo and frequent collaborators are again on strong form.

Far removed from the guts and glory spirit of the Rocky franchise - the torch-bearer when it comes to screen boxing stories, of course - La Mquina is an increasingly claustrophobic drama set around the world of boxing. Unafraid of dipping into the realms of farce, the miniseries has the characteristic political undertones of many of Garcia Bernal and Luna's other projects, but focused on the microcosmic target of corruption, deceit, and disaster in the sporting world as the backdrop of two men fighting to gain control of their lives and legacies.

This really makes me want to recommend Gael García Bernal's wrestling film Cassandro. The series looks pretty generic until the psychological thriller elements kick in.

Third edition of talent showcase to be unveiled at the start of the San Sebastian Film Festival on September 22.

The 2023 line-up of Spain Stars of Tomorrow, part of Screen International’s prestigious talent-spotting series, will be unveiled at the San Sebastian Film Festival on September 22.

A launch event will take place during the festival on September 26 to introduce the 10 rising actors and filmmakers with the potential for breakout international careers to the industry.

The third edition of Spain Stars welcomes the Spain Film Commission as headline partner, and the San Sebastian Film Festival as supporting partner.
