'This Is Something Very Different': Lauren Graham Hopes Gilmore Girls Fans Will Watch Her New TV Series
Image
Gilmore Girls star Laura Graham hopes fans will watch her new series, The Z-Suite on Tubi. She recently discussed how the role is different from Lorelai Gilmore, saying that the two characters are total opposites.

"There are no similarities, and I hope they’ll come along for this ride," Graham told The Hollywood Reporter. "I can’t do that. I can never replicate the beauty and the magic of that character and that writing and that time, so I might as well not try. This is something very different, but she’s fun and kooky and the show has a spirit to it that I think has a coziness to it, but it’s a very different character." The Z-Suite is a Tubi Original that is set to premiere on the streaming service on Feb. 6.

Harland Williams & Justin Levine Break Down the Madness Behind Wingman, Hollywood’s Next Outrageous Comedy
Wingman
With the comedy world hungry for fresh laughs and no-holds-barred humor, New feature film Wingman is set to deliver exactly what audiences crave: gut-busting jokes and an unapologetic approach to storytelling. Produced by Justin L. Levine and directed and starring, Harland Williams, the film is one of the most anticipated comedies coming out in 2025. In this exclusive interview, we sit down with these two geniuses to get a glimpse into the making of a comedy that knows exactly what it’s here to do, entertain.

Justin – What was the initial spark that led to the creation of Wingman?

Well, I originally came up with the storyline about 15 years ago, back when Harland and I were filming in Toronto. We were working on a wacky spoof comedy called Child Wild that Harland wrote and starred in. During that time, I came up with the concept for Wingman, inspired by the throwback...

First Look Trailer for Apocalypse Comedy 'Skal - Fight for Survival'
Image
"Here we are - Day 2 of the apocalypse." Red Owl Film has revealed a promo trailer for a post-apocalyptic comedy called Skal, from filmmaker Benjamin Cappelletti. This is a Canadian production, however, "skål" is actually a Scandinavian word for toasting - kind of like saying "cheers" in English. The full title is Skal - Fight for Survival and the film is being sold at the European Film Market (EFM). What is it about? Well, apparently it follows a video blogger / online "content creator" who decides to vlog the apocalypse when it hits. More social media satire. "I am Arthur, I am an online creator/comedy artist and I just hit 3 millions subs on my channel, but when all the water on the planet disappears over night, my hangover turns into an epic fight for survival." Starring Evan Marsh as Arthur, Darren Eisenhauer, Trevor Hayes, Mariah Inger, and Olivia Scriven. This looks like low budget,...

Trailer for Goofy Action Comedy 'Office Games' with Jodelle Ferland
Image
"All this gaming has prepared me to save my real life princess." Quiver has revealed an official trailer for a nerdy action comedy film titled Office Games, made by actor / director Christian de la Cortina. This is one of the most obvious Scott Pilgrim vs the World rip-offs so far, with gaming visuals added to the footage as a guy tries to rescue his true love. Or whatever. The only difference is it's set inside a gaming company's office, not on the streets of Toronto like Scott Pilgrim. When an obsessive gamer living in his parents' basement is forced to get a job, he embarks on the most epic quest of his life - to slay the corporate villains and save his princess. The film stars Evan Marsh, Jodelle Ferland, Darla Biccum, Christian de la Cortina, Eliot Ahdoot, Michael Mancini, with Daniel Stolfi and Mark Camacho. This all looks especially mediocre.

‘Vicious Fun’: When Comedy and Horror Don’t See Eye To Eye
Image
Photo: ‘Vicious Fun’ Overview Released digitally on April 5th, 2022, this 2020 horror-comedy is a new take on parody film. There is no doubt that this movie can’t be taken seriously, though the real question is – is it supposed to? There are certain aspects of this film that warrant a certain level of respect, such as the luminescent and eye-catching cinematography. However, when it comes to the writing, character building, and acting; you might find yourself asking – is this supposed to be funny? ‘Vicious Fun’ - Plot Summary Joel (portrayed by Evan Marsh) is a nerdy 20 something-year-old writer for a horror magazine – Vicious Fanatics. His main character development revolves around his crush on his roommate Sarah (portrayed by Alexa Steele), who quite frankly could not be less interested in him. Vicious Fun review – witty comic horror is a bloody good time
Cody Calahan
Meta jokes, perfect pace and sophisticated storytelling are wielded with skill by playful director Cody Calahan

Canadian writer-director Cody Calahan has been building something of a reputation in horror circles for his playful, narratively sophisticated work in what seem like superficially pulpy films, such as Antisocial, Let Her Out and The Oak Room. His latest offering is pretty on-brand, with winking meta-jokes, such as having the central character Joel (Evan Marsh from Shazam!) be a journalist who writes about horror films. What’s more, when we first meet him, he’s pitching a story to a horror film producer (Gord Rand) about a serial killer who is a taxi driver, a joke that pays out satisfyingly much later. In less skilful hands, gags like this would be highly irritating, but Calahan and the cast get away with it thanks to fine comic timing and likable ensemble playing.

Grimmfest May Madness: ‘Vicious Fun’ Review
Image
Stars: Evan Marsh, Amber Goldfarb, Ari Millen, Julian Richings, Robert Maillet, David Koechner, Alexa Rose Steele | Written by Cody Calahan, James Villeneuve | Directed by Cody Calahan

Grimmfest keep on delivering the goods despite a worldwide pandemic. Their latest treat comes along with the May Bank Holiday and includes Cody Calahan’s latest movie Vicious Fun.

Set in the eighties, the crazy story has us follow a horror movie journalist (instantly relatable to a big chunk of this films audience!) who somehow ends up in a self-help group for serial killers. When his attempts at blending in don’t go to plan he has to work out a way to survive… I’m glad the word fun is in the title of this movie. It is often something that people seem to think is a less than positive way of describing films. But I love films that are fun and it is a perfect description here.

Frightfest Glasgow 2021: ‘Vicious Fun’ Review
Image
Stars: Evan Marsh, Amber Goldfarb, Ari Millen, Julian Richings, Robert Maillet, David Koechner, Alexa Rose Steele | Written by Cody Calahan, James Villeneuve | Directed by Cody Calahan

Sometimes there are films whose titles Literally tell you what to expect from a movie. Vicious Fun is one such film…There’s a whole lot of vicious things going down in the film – in particular to the gaggle of serial killing villains in the movie – and it’s also a whole lot of fun. A Lot of fun!

The latest film from Black Fawn Films, who are keeping the Canuxploitation tradition of genre cinema alive, Vicious Fun comes from director Cody Calahan who – if you’ve been reading Nerdly for quite some time – was responsible from not only one of my favourite Black Fawn films, not only one of my favourite Canadian genre films but also one of my favourite horror films full stop,...

Sean Baek, David Koechner, Robert Maillet, Julian Richings, Ari Millen, Amber Goldfarb, and Evan Marsh in Vicious Fun (2020)
Vicious Fun - Jennie Kermode - 16637
Sean Baek, David Koechner, Robert Maillet, Julian Richings, Ari Millen, Amber Goldfarb, and Evan Marsh in Vicious Fun (2020)
As a critic, something one learns early on about films sold on single big ideas is that they rarely deliver. Every now and again, however, something comes along that breaks that rule. Vicious Fun is one such film, a smart choice for the Frightfest team, and if you're a fan of Eighties horror then it will keep you entertained all the way through.

The concept is this: smug yet sympathetic horror film critic Joel (Evan Marsh) accidentally dozes off after having a few too many drinks in an unfamiliar bar. When he wakes up, there's a private gathering in session. It's a support group meeting for serial killers. If he doesn't want to die, he has to talk the talk and convince them that he's a serial killer too.

Joel is aided somewhat in his efforts by the fact that these killers are very much horror movie clichés. There's Mike (played by.

Vicious Fun Review – Glasgow FrightFest 2021
Image
There’s no denying that Vicious Fun is slickly made; bathed and birthed in a whole heap of stylish neons, from a synthy score to a quirky but quickly meaningless ’80s period setting. It’s gorgeous to look at, delves out plenty of practical gore, and happily lives up to the edgy fun and games the title promises. A decent enough addition to any late night genre slot, for sure. But at the same time, not one that’s particularly consistent, or all that memorable either.

The plot might say otherwise – a self-confessed loser finding himself well-and-truly in the lions den, when he blacks out and wakes up in the middle of a self-help group for larger-than-life serial killers. It’s a witty spin on slasher movies that’s probably ten years too late to really have any impact, but at least makes for an amusing set-up. And with a...

Line-up announced for this years Frightfest Glasgow
Image
The organisers of Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow have announced that, despite continuing Covid-19 restrictions, the festival will return Digitally this year to present a virtual six-pack of tasty titles; an extravaganza of the dark arts that will leave you stirred, shaken and shocked.

There will be six online presentations, including the UK premiere of Kyle Rankin’s controversial high school siege drama Run Hide Fight, starring Isabel May as a fiercely independent student taking on a quartet of invading shooters, and the UK premiere of Out Of This World (Hors Du Monde), a disturbing, compelling study of obsession from brilliant new French director Marc Fouchard. It boasts a stunning performance by Kevin Mischel as a mentally-challenged musician turned Uber driver. A few years back Here Comes Hell, a Black & White mystery thriller, was a FrightFest Glasgow sensation, and The Woman With Leopard Shoes (LA Femme Aux Chaussures Leopard) is another...

Sitges 2020 Review: Vicious Fun, The Name of The Movie Says it All
Image
Never has marketing a film been so easy!    Q: So. What's your film about?  A: (points to title)   Joel is an obnoxious film critic and wisenheimer who writes for a national horror rag. One night Joel follows Bob, a threat to his imagined relationship possibilities with his roommate, Sarah, to get some dirt on Bob. Instead he stumbles upon a therapy group session for serial killers. Mistaken for one of the members Joel now has to rely on his whits and horror know-how to fit in with these monsters, or else he will be their next victim.   Evan Marsh is great as Joel. He really captures Joel's ignorance and naivite at first. He's just a loveable goof that is going to have...

Turner Latin America’s new English-language film label Particular Crowd has kicked off its partnership with Canadian shingles Breakthrough Entertainment and Black Fawn Films with horror-comedy “Vicious Fun,” now in post.

‘Riot Girls’ Review: A New Generation Takes the Reins in Post-Apocalyptic Actioner
Following her success helming a segment in the well-received, woman-directed horror anthology Xx, former Rue Morgue editor Jovanka Vuckovic delivers her feature film debut with the high concept, post-apocalyptic teen actioner Riot Girls. Obviously borrowing from the underground feminist punk movement Riot grrrl for its title (with an appropriate aesthetic and love for Joan Jett), screenwriter Katherine Collins’ tale of rival gangs also takes many cues from “The Walking Dead” by applying that 90s-era subculture to its social commentary separating humans into two categories: those who kill to survive and those who kill for power. In a world where adulthood spells death via an unexplained gut rot, teenagers are forced to take control. And if the microcosm of Potter’s Bluff is any indication, youthful exuberance divides on the poverty line.

On one side of the bridge reside rich kids who’ve transformed their high school into a fortress run...

Fantasia 2019: ‘Harpoon’ & ‘Riot Girls’ Review
As our Fantasia Fest coverage winds down, here’s a double-bill of two new films from actor Munro Chambers, who came to prominence back in 2015 with a little film called Turbo Kid. His latest films see the actor embrace both ends of the character spectrum: hero and villain. Or do they?

Harpoon

Stars: Munro Chambers, Christopher Gray, Emily Tyra | Written and Directed by Rob Grant

Wealthy Richard (Christopher Gray) is prone to fits of violent anger, particularly when he believes his girlfriend Sasha (Emily Tyra) is cheating on him with his best friend Jonah (Munro Chambers) — who’s been having worse luck than even his Biblical namesake. Once they reassure him that his fears are unfounded, Richard invites Sasha and Jonah on an excursion aboard his yacht The Naughty Buoy to make amends. What starts out as a pleasure cruise becomes a fateful trip when festering suspicions and resentments bubble to the surface,...

Tiff Review: ‘Giant Little Ones’ Explores the Damage of Homophobia and Toxic Masculinity
Writer/director Keith Behrman knows exactly what he’s doing when introducing a variety of people along the sexuality spectrum in his latest film Giant Little Ones. He’s intentionally flooding his canvas so that we have no choice but to accept them all rather than turn our focus onto just one. There’s no room for token characters anymore, the real-life disparity between heterosexuals and homosexuals closing as each year passes. So Behrman looks to represent that change on the big screen by giving his lead (Josh Wiggins’ Franky Winter) a trans friend (Niamh Wilson’s Mouse), a gay father (Kyle MacLachlan’s Ray), and a gay teammate on the swim team (Carson MacCormac’s Michael). He surrounds Franky with non-cisgender characters to love, resent, and accept each for different reasons that transcend compassion.

All the while he clouds this boy’s own sexuality with a girlfriend (Hailey Kittle...
