Timothée Chalamet’s Transformation – From Indie Heartthrob To Hollywood’s Most Bankable Star
Image
Timothée Chalamet Movie Transformation (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Timothée Chalamet’s rise has been as dramatic and stylish as one of his red carpet-looks. He started as the indie scene’s favorite artsy boy, soft-spoken, floppy-haired, and constantly heartbroken in sun-drenched landscapes. Fast forward a few years, and he’s now leading box office juggernauts, riding space worms in Dune: Part Two, and rapping his way through chocolate factories in Wonka.

Somehow, he managed to stay both a fashion icon and a total goofball (we’re still not over Lil Timmy Tim). With collaborations spanning from Greta Gerwig to Denis Villeneuve, he has officially entered that rare actor zone where people will show up just to watch him stare moodily into the distance. So, whether you’ve been following him since Call Me By Your Name or hopped on the hype train post-Interstellar, it’s time to rank the hits, the near-misses,...

After four turns of being denied Album of the Year at the Grammys — losses that said four blockbuster albums (two of which spawned their own films), four legendary world tours, two Super Bowl performances, more Grammy wins than any other person, and many more acts of unequivocal genius were simply not good enough — Beyoncé finally walked away with that coveted golden gramophone for Cowboy Carter.

With the greatest living entertainer earning a win that’s been due to her since 2013’s Beyoncé, you’d think her breaking this curse would feel better.

2 Years After Its First Season, This 88% Fresh British Comedy Just Recruited a Brooklyn 99 Fan Favorite
Image
A praiseworthy score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes is reason enough to bring back a second season of the British black comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? Written by and starring Daisy Cooper and Selin Hizli, the show is a beautifully dark concoction of betrayal, female friendship, family and unfiltered honesty. Cooper and Hizli met at drama school, although their friendship didn't get off to the best start. Hizli told The Independent that Cooper compared her to Lily Allen for her arrogance. Evidently, the two got over their differences, and TV is all the better for it.

It's hard to think of much that could've been added (or taken away) from their series to make it any better. The laughs were in the right place, the twists took everyone by surprise and the darker moments left viewers a little creeped-out. Season 2 is due to come out next year with, hopefully, the same...

10 Plot Twists in British TV Shows That No One Saw Coming
Image
This article contains references to suicide and sexual assault.

A good plot twist can be the making of an unforgettable TV show. If a storyline has been a little tedious, the right unexpected scene can make all the difference in getting viewers' approvals. Whether in comedy, drama or horror, audiences don't always want to be able to predict the plot mid-way. Otherwise, what's the point of carrying on watching?

The other side of that is that a show can appear to be building up to something utterly unpredictable, only for it to fall flat and not be as exciting as one might hope. There are plenty of writers and creators who have managed to get their twists just right. For the British TV industry, a number of shows have been hailed for their overall excellent plot, which is underlined with an unforgettable twist that no one saw coming.

Inside No. 9 Series 9 Episode 1 Review: Boo to a Goose
Image
Warning: this Inside No. 9 review contains plot spoilers.

Nine characters! And we knew them all in what, under three minutes? That has to be some kind of screenwriting record. You can watch hours and hours of other shows and come away barely on nodding terms with the lead roles. Here, inside a few lines of dialogue, it was easy to imagine the “Boo to a Goose” ensemble – Gerry, Edith, Elena, Wilma, Cleo, Harold, Raymond, Finn and Mossy – walking off the screen and into their lives.

Well, until that final reveal it was easy to imagine. After that, things turned excitingly unfamiliar.

What began as a morality play about prejudice and compassion twisted into a dystopian sci-fi based on that most Inside No. 9 of Inside No. 9 things – a pun. What if, asks the episode, the “replacement service” sent to the trapped passengers on a Liverpool underground train wasn’t replacing the train,...

“They say a guilty conscience can eat you alive…” Those words are key to Christian Kang Bachini’s directorial debut, which he made on a shoestring budget while performing most of the jobs including editing, starring as the lead, and performing his own stunts. With such dedication put into this work, Escalation is truly a labour of love.

Set in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Chris is avoiding all human contact while making himself dinner. While speaking on the phone to a friend, he is confronted about past promises that he chose to not fulfil, preferring to escape from reality into the horror film that is on the TV. However, the ensuing night will leave him faced with what kind of person he is through gruesome circumstances.

Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith’s anthology show Inside No 9 will begin broadcasting its final series on 8th May, here are the details.

You have to take your hat off to Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. By the end of the next series, The League Of Gentlemen stars will have written 55 completely new, original comedy dramas, complete with shocks, surprises and twists aplenty. We’re talking about the majestic Inside No 9.

From the silent shenanigans of the wonderful A Quiet Night In (which featured Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin) to the astonishing drama of The Twelve Days Of Christine and, arguably the greatest episode, beautiful ode to double acts Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room, if you’ve never had the pleasure, it is a series well worth delving into.

Actor Timothée Chalamet is a critical darling, with many of his films receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews alongside commercial success. He was also nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his work in 2017’s Call Me by Your Name. However, despite a glowing career of critical acclaim, one film in Chalamet’s filmography remains a catastrophic failure.

Olivia Wilde in Love the Coopers

In 2015, Chalamet starred in the star-studded Holiday comedy film Love the Coopers. However, despite featuring the likes of Olivia Wilde and Diane Keaton, the film could not be saved from being a critical mistake in Chalamet’s career, becoming his lowest-rated film. Here is why Love the Coopers failed despite boasting one of the best ensemble casts for a comedy film.

Inside No. 9’s Final Series Guest Stars Might Be Its Best Yet
Image
As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

It was just us and it was fun. I remember sitting in the back of the car, and he’s...

Jean Deaux Sees Art Everywhere, Especially in the Music that Makes Up Her Life in 10 Songs
Image
When Jean Deaux says she’s always creating, she means always. The rapper/singer/songwriter from Chicago has made it a goal to put out music every year after releasing her debut EP, Krash, in 2018. Jean Deaux has been like this her entire life in fact. As a kindergartener, she remembers trying to write chapter books. “It’s funny because it was about my Uncle Bo, but I said my uncle had a farm which was totally a lie. Even the teachers were like, ‘Uncle Bo’s Farm? That’s hard,...

Westside Boogie’s Life in 10 Songs Shows a Scholar of a Modern Rap
Image
Westside Boogie is objectively cool. Before you even consider the unmistakable voice or the slow beats-driven songs, the Compton-born rapper is the rare case of someone who completely turned his life around after once being part of a gang. These days, he makes it a point through his music to set an example for other young Black men that it’s good to embrace your emotions and be vulnerable. (He tries to make the same point in person to neighbors whenever he goes back home.) But no matter how much...

Take a (sonic) Trip Around the World with Masego’s Life in 10 Songs
Image
Songwriting singer-saxophonist Masego is a musician who’s excited for where he’s going but never forgets where he’s been. At this summer’s Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, he literally brought out the first saxophone his mother ever purchased for him and played it for thousands. You can expect that artistic artifact will be in tow with Masego as he tours throughout Europe to end of the year, too.

“I had to keep that, my momma spent her money on it,” Masego joked when talking to Rolling Stone Radio co-host Charlie Cooper.

Listen Closely and You Might Hear Smino’s Life in 10 Songs Within Each and Every Track
Image
It’s hard to understand why you don’t hear more Smino on the radio. Each and every track from the Chicago-via-St. Louis rapper is something of a musical kaleidoscope—they’re packed with varying images and sensations, and even on the same album a different aspect can come to the forefront with every song. You might get Outkast or D’Angelo vibes one minute then hear gospel or reggae influence the next.

Being hard to classify might be one way to be underplayed, but don’t call the rapper underrated.

Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper in This Country (2017)
Am I Being Unreasonable? review: Daisy May Cooper is flawless in her first follow-up to This Country
Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper in This Country (2017)
When I first heard about Am I Being Unreasonable?, I assumed it was some satire on the parenting website Mumsnet. The people on it spend an inordinate amount of their supposedly busy days discussing difficult tradespeople or the unsavoury sexual habits of their “Dh” (Dear Husband). Oftentimes they seek validation for their actions from their fellow members, by asking “…am I being unreasonable?” Or “Aibu” in the Mumsnet argot.

The latest comedy vehicle from This Country’s creator and star Daisy May Cooper isn’t about Mumsnet as such, except that the character she plays, Nic, inhabits a quintessentially middle-class English environment (Cooper’s native Cotswolds by the looks of things), and she seems prone to asking the most intimate questions about herself on Mumsnet. She has a nice house, a clever little son who’s more mature than she is, and an eccentric cleaning lady. She struggles to make friends in the village,...

With director Tom George’s See How They Run now playing in theaters, I recently caught up with Charlie Cooper to talk about making the Agatha Christie-style whodunnit. The film takes place in the West End of 1950s London where a seasoned detective (Sam Rockwell) and an ambitious rookie (Saoirse Ronan) investigate the murder of a film director that was planning on adapting a hit play into a movie. The film also stars Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Reece Sherrsmith, Harris Dickinson, Charlie Cooper, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Pearl Chandr, Sian Clifford, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, and David Oyelowo.

See How They Run Review: A Crime Caper For Fans of Knives Out
Agatha Christie
You don’t have to have seen Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap to enjoy wonderful theatreland-set, whodunnit See How They Run. Nor does it spoil things if you have (you probably still wont guess the ending of the film). Nor do you need a working knowledge of Agatha Christie herself, the peculiar contract that exists around The Mousetrap, 1950s London, Richard Attenborough and other real-life celebrities of the time, or indeed Tom Stoppard’s play The Real Inspector Hound. But part of the beauty of this incredibly meta, zippy, crime caper is that after the credits roll you’re probably going to want to do a bit of googling.

Set in London in the early ’50s, See How They Run sees The Mousetrap celebrating its 100th performance. The cast includes the celebrated Richard Attenborough (perfectly embodied by Harris Dickinson) and his wife Sheila Sim (Pearl Chanda), meanwhile obnoxious Hollywood director...

See How They Run review: Playful Agatha Christie romp is as sweet and light as a fondant fancy
Image
Dir: Tom George. Starring: Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Reece Shearsmith, Harris Dickinson, David Oyelowo. 12A, 98 minutes.

Could the all-star whodunnit finally save us from the monotony of superheroes? That’s the tantalising promise embedded in See How They Run, which may feel as cynically constructed as any of Marvel’s corporate-minded affairs, but goes down as sweet and light as a fondant fancy. It’s an equal-parts concoction of Rian Johnson’s wry, self-aware Knives Out and the aristocratic romanticism of Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptations. And if its ambitions towards broad likeability weren’t already obvious enough, the film’s caked in the Wes Anderson aesthetic – obsessive symmetry, bright palettes, French New Wave-inspired camera trickery. You also have to wonder whether the presence of two of his regulars – Saoirse Ronan and Adrien Brody – means they themselves weren’t wickedly deceived into signing their contracts.

‘See How They Run’ Review: Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan in Lifeless Riff on Agatha Christie
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Nursery rhymes and Beatles lyrics aside, the generic title of See How They Run recalls those bougie farces spiced with naughty innuendo that were a fixture on London stages in the 1980s. But this starry whodunit is more directly tied to another West End staple, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. The film is set in 1953, when that murder mystery was just 100 performances into its ongoing seven-decade run, interrupted only during the Covid shutdown.

Its chief merit is the rare opportunity it provides Saoirse Ronan to showcase her skills with bubbly comedy, making her the standout in a ridiculously overqualified ensemble. But despite the promise of that title, this wheezing romp slows to a limp.

Directed and written by Brit TV recruits Tom George and Mark Chappell, respectively, the film has less in common with updated murder-mystery comedies like Knives Out than with the...
