Directors Bjorn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta rely on old, worn-out templates in their movie “Salvable” (2025). A bracing, despairing, resigned look at a man past his prime, the film is about a shadow of glory days, aching for a glimpse of it only to be redirected into emotional hollowness. There are only residues which the disillusioned, battered individual can now wrangle with, foist some semblance of anchorage.
The movie has, as its protagonist, a man who’s lost everything, including his once-blazing career as a boxer. His marriage broke up, he’s trying to hold onto relations with his daughter. Everything is a mess. Franklin, who has also written the film, lends the figure of the ex-boxer a sliver of dignity and grace. It’s an emotional mix of remembrance and shelled-out fortitude in the protagonist, coupled with Toby Kebbell’s moving performance, that lets “Salvable” accrue a growing pathos.

Shia Labeouf has signed on to star in a movie loosely based around violence at the infamous Angola Prison. God of the Rodeocomes from producer Ridley Scott. The casting follows Labeouf last appearing on the big screen in 2024's Megalopolis, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed flop.
The Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skullactor will lead God of the Rodeo as prison inmate Buckkey, who is serving a life sentence in the real-life Angola Prison (also known as the Louisiana State Penitentiary). Angola earned the reputation as the"Alcatraz of the South" due to numerous violent clashes between inmates and guards since its founding in the 1840s as a slave plantation.

The past-prime fighter struggling to rise above his hard-knock background was a screen cliché even when it fueled unexpected smash “Rocky” almost half a century ago. Since then, the same premise has been dusted off for regular reuse, often with extra helpings of “gritty” to make it seem less formulaic. But even that approach can feel mired in the same-old. English music video directing team Bjorn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta (billed as “Franklin & Marchetta”) make an assured feature bow with “Salvable,” which has Toby Kebbell from the “Planet of the Apes” films as one such boxer in a Welsh coastal town, beset by problems in and out of the ring.
With Shia Labeouf and James Cosmo also on board, this downbeat tale has solid performances, an intriguing locale and accomplished visual presentation among its virtues. Nonetheless, Franklin’s script never quite transcends pedestrian familiarity, holding this watchable effort back from...

Salvable, co-directed by Björn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta, opens in the rain-soaked streets of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, and immediately positions its protagonist at a crossroads. Logline: Sal (Toby Kebbell), a once-promising boxer turned nursing-home orderly, fights to reclaim his fractured life—battling courtroom custody battles by day and underground prizefights by night.
On paper, it’s a familiar setup: worn-down athlete, strained family ties, a shady friend dragging him back into the ring. Yet Franklin’s screenplay hints at a more nuanced narrative rhythm, privileging quiet character moments over spectacle. The film assembles a strong ensemble—Kebbell anchors Sal’s weary introspection; Shia Labeouf reappears as Vince, the reckless catalyst; James Cosmo offers grounded wisdom as Sal’s veteran trainer; and Kíla Lord Cassidy brings subtle heat as Sal’s resentful daughter.
Visually, the palette embraces muted grays and damp concrete, underlining the working-class textures of Welsh life. The...

At this point, the prospect of watching a film about an aging boxer whose life has hit the skids sounds as appealing as getting into the ring with Oleksandr Usyk. It’s the sort of well-trod cinematic territory that feels overly familiar, and the title, Salvable, does not exactly inspire hope. Fortunately, co-directors Bjorn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta’s debut feature proves better than its synopsis suggests. While the film doesn’t chart any particularly new territory, it benefits greatly from Franklin’s subtle screenplay and performances infusing it with emotional power that sneaks up on you.
The sort of gritty, realistic drama that frequently emerged from England in the early ‘60s, the story set in Wales revolves around Sal (Toby Kebbell, the film’s real star, despite Shia Labeouf’s prominence in the marketing), whose successful boxing days are well behind him. Although he still trains at night under...

Every few years Hollywood develops an unhealthy obsession with boxing movies and the classic underdog tale. You know, the down-and-out boxer who needs to overcome the odds and a tough opponent to come out victorious in the end, blah, blah? On the surface, that’s what Björn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta’s Salvable appears to be about. Toby Kebbell’s aging Sal is a boxer past his prime, but he continues to train and dream of becoming somebody. Salvable, though, doesn’t produce the picture-perfect ending of a triumphant Sal holding his hand up in the air after a bloody battle. Instead, it’s a harsh reality check about how decision rather than destiny drives humans to either success or failure. It’s beyond boxing; it’s about life. This isn’t about Rocky Balboa [L-r] Toby Kebbell as “Sal” and Shia Labeouf as “Vince” in the action crime thriller Salvable,...

Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Which is a shame, because he gives a great performance, and Abel Ferrara always creates fascinating films. It was perhaps just too niche a movie to give the former Transformers star the spotlight again. That likely won't change with his next movie, Salvable, which recently released its first trailer. You can watch the trailer for the film, also starring Toby Kebbell, below:
The synopsis for Salvable reads as follows:
"Shia Labeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his...

Toby Kebbell and Shia Labeouf are set to face off in the new boxing drama Salvablethis spring. Collider can exclusively reveal the new poster art for the film, in which Kebbell and Labeouf loom large over the film's hardscrabble industrial setting. The film will premiere in theaters, on demand, and digital on May 2, 2025.
In the new poster, Kebbell has his gloves up and his eyes on the prize, as aging boxer Sal the Bull. The bearded Labeouf has his hair bleached and slicked back, reflecting the shady nature of his character, Vince. Below them is the bleakly industrial setting of the film; it was filmed on location in Wales last year. Kebbell may not be recognized for some of his most famous roles, which include the tyrannical bonobo Koba in the Planet of the Apes films and King Kong in Kong: Skull Island; however, he has recently starred, sans CG ape accouterments,...
