BAFTA TV Awards Snubs & Surprises: ‘Day Of The Jackal’ Frozen Out; Record Year For Disney+; ‘Supacell’ Makes Drama Series Cut
Image
The BAFTA Television Awards nominations have landed and, as always, there were a few eyebrow raisers from jury members.

The likes of Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs The Post Office were expected to do well, and both series duly delivered with eight and six nominations respectively.

Baby Reindeer has been a darling of the season, and the BAFTA TV Awards will be the big crescendo to its campaign. The beloved Jessica Gunning and creator Richard Gadd both compete for prizes, while the series — which remains the subject of a massive U.S. lawsuit from Fiona Harvey — will compete in the Limited Drama category.

There was also good news for Slow Horses, which bagged six nominations for Apple TV+, including the notable return of Gary Oldman in the Leading Actor category after he missed out in 2024.

Where there is good news, there is also bad news, with a few notable...

Princess Beatrice at an event for Victoria : Les Jeunes Années d'une reine (2009)
Princess Beatrice Influenced Dad Prince Andrew To Go Through With Career-ending Interview
Princess Beatrice at an event for Victoria : Les Jeunes Années d'une reine (2009)
Princess Beatrice has always been said to be the one who engineered the Newsnight interview that tarnished Prince Andrew’s image and sent him packing from royal life.

In new show, we see her persuading her father to go through with the plan even though he is having second thoughts.

Princess Beatrice Blasts King Charles As Prince Andrew Has Second Thoughts About Interview

Prince Andrew is trying his best to move on from his disastrous Newsnight interview, even though documentaries are doing their best to draw him back.

In ‘A Very Royal Scandal,’ the Duke of York is back at the scene of the interview that ruined his reputation, but he is having second thoughts about getting on air with Emily Maitlis.

The actress, Honor Swinton Byrne, playing Beatrice in the show is seen pleading with her father to reconsider his stance on the matter and go through with the interview as planned.

‘A Very Royal Scandal’ Review: Ruth Wilson and Michael Sheen Revisit Prince Andrew’s ‘Newsnight’ Interview in Sturdy Amazon Miniseries
Image
Amazon enthusiastically announced the Sept. 19 release date for A Very Royal Scandal with the declaration, “The critically acclaimed A Very … Scandal anthology is back!”

My primary questions include: Was “Scandal” included so that nobody would think A Very Royal Scandal was, in some way, a part of a franchise that perhaps started with 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel? Does your average television viewer even accept the existence of the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise? And, perhaps most sincerely, even if we acknowledge that the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise exists, what does it mean? What are the unifying characteristics between 2018’s A Very English Scandal, 2021’s A Very British Scandal and now A Very Royal Scandal, a trio of limited series without an overlapping character, star, writer or director?

The first two installments focused on pre-Internet kerfuffles stirred up by the British press, while A Very Royal Scandal...

‘A Very Royal Scandal’ Recap (Episodes 1-3) Explained: What Happened To Prince Andrew?
Image
Directed by Julina Jerrold, A Very Royal Scandal takes us through the nightmare that Prince Andrew lived through after he agreed to give an interview to the BBC and be a guest on their show named Newsnight. The series is based on Emily Maitlis’ book named Airhead: The Imperfect Art of Making News and it makes us privy to what led to Prince Andrew and his team taking that decision and also to the furore created in the entire nation after the interview got aired in 2019. In retrospect, if we see, I think it was a horrendous decision to give that interview. It was as if Prince Andrew knew that the sea was full of sharks, but still he went for a swim, hoping that the fish wouldn’t devour him. I don’t know how Amanda Thirsk, his private secretary, couldn’t see the hazards of letting her boss...

Michael Sheen Makes a Prickly Prince Andrew in Prime Video’s Slick, Absorbing ‘A Very Royal Scandal’: TV Review
Image
For decades, the British Royal Family managed to maintain a certain mystique and allure. Tabloid fodder and salacious stories leaked occasionally, but in the 1990s, the scandals surrounding Princess Diana and King Charles’ marriage almost caused the entire enterprise to collapse. However, the royals seemed to hit new heights in popularity in 2018 when Prince Harry married Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Yet, just a few short years later, it all crumbled. Queen Elizabeth II was ailing, Prince Harry and Meghan exited the royal family and Prince Andrew’s long relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced. Created by Jeremy Brock, Prime Video’s limited series “A Very Royal Scandal” is a frank and engaging examination of the shocking interview between Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen) and journalist Emily Maitlis (Ruth Wilson) that would lead to the Duke of York’s ousting from public life and define Maitlis’ career.

Real-Life Beatrice In ‘A Very Royal Scandal’: Where Is Prince Andrew’s Daughter Now?
Image
In A Very Royal Scandal, we saw that Princess Beatrice, the older daughter of Prince Andrew, unexpectedly attended the pre-meet where Prince Andrew met the BBC Newsnight team to get an idea of the kind of questions they were going to ask. Neither Emily Maitlis nor Sam McAlister had ever imagined that they would have to discuss the case of sexual assault against the Prince in front of his own daughter. But nonetheless, she was in the room, and that’s when the BBC team realized that apart from Amanda Thirsk, Andrew’s secretary, even Beatrice played a key role in deciding whether her father should do the interview or not. In real life too, Beatrice did attend the meeting, and she was in fact hugely disappointed and distressed after the interview aired on November 16th, 2019. But before discussing the kind of impact the backlash had on Princess Beatrice, let...

Real-Life People In ‘A Very Royal Scandal’ And Where Are They Now
Image
It could be said that A Very Royal Scandal was a documentation of whatever happened in 2019 with Prince Andrew and its aftermath. Almost all the characters shown in the series are inspired by real-life people, though it is possible that the director might have taken certain creative liberties in portraying them and dramatized the narrative just to increase the entertainment quotient. So, let’s get to know these characters a little more and find out what happened to them after the disastrous BBC interview that shook the entire nation.

Prince Andrew

Life was not the same after Prince Andrew gave the Newsnight interview to the BBC. Although he still lived in the Royal Lodge (which in itself became an issue for the royal family), he lost his reputation, and he was referred to as “the disgraced” by the people. Michael Sheen played Prince Andrew in the series, and I must...

A Very Royal Scandal review | A fascinating look into investigative journalism
Image
Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson star in a dramatisation of Emily Maitlis’ infamous interview with Prince Andrew. Here’s our A Very Royal Scandal review.

Prime Video’s A Very Royal Scandal is the second dramatisation of Emily Maitlis’ interview with Prince Andrew we’ve seen in a year. We found the previous one, Netflix’s Scoop, to be a little lacklustre, but thankfully, A Very Royal Scandal is a much more entertaining affair.

A Very Royal Scandal follows A Very English Scandal and A Very British Scandal – we’re sensing a pattern here – as a fictional look at events in British history. A Very Royal Scandal presents a much more modern case, one that most of us remember very well. That comes with its own difficulties, but for the most part, A Very Royal Scandal excels at what it sets out to do.

Ruth Wilson plays Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis...

‘A Very Royal Scandal’: Watch Trailer As Michael Sheen Transforms Into Prince Andrew For Amazon Series Chronicling Notorious ‘Newsnight’ Interview
Image
The latest Prince Andrew project has dropped trailer.

A Very Royal Scandal, which launches in a fortnight, stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced Prince with Ruth Wilson playing the role of his interviewer Emily Maitlis.

A Very Royal Scandal is a three-part TV series as opposed to Scoop, the Netflix feature that starred Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. It is the third in the A Very… series that Amazon has previously co-produced with the BBC, although this one will only air on Prime Video. Unlike Scoop, Maitlis is involved with this one as an EP.

In the trailer, Wilson’s Maitlis can be seen pursuing the story that would make her a global household name and destroy the Prince’s reputation in a pivotal moment in British history, which saw him buckle under questions around his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and make a sea of humiliating utterances.

‘A Very Royal Scandal’: Michael Sheen Is Prince Andrew & Ruth Wilson Is Emily Maitlis In Latest Project On Notorious ‘Newsnight’ Interview
Image
It only feels a minute ago that Netflix’s Scoop movie was bedecking advertising hoardings in Times Square but the Prince Andrew interview projects are coming thick and fast and here are first looks at Michael Sheen as the prince and Ruth Wilson as Emily Maitlis in Amazon’s A Very Royal Scandal.

The Prime Video retelling, which launches September 19, is across three episodes and will revisit the 2019 interview that effectively brought down the prince and ended his role in public life.

Sheen is the prince and Wilson plays Maitlis, whose BBC Newsnight interview about the scandalous accusations Andrew faced regarding his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre sent shockwaves around the world. A Very Royal Scandal follows the action of Maitlis and Andrew in the lead-up to the interview, the ground-breaking event itself and the many questions left in its wake that would change their lives forever. The streamer has also debuted a series of first-look images from the series, showing “Good Omens” star Sheen’s transformation into the British royal, who was widely criticized for his defense of his friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his failure to mention Epstein’s victims during the 2019 interview.

Wilson suits up as BBC anchor Maitlis, whose cool performance and professionalism during the interview was highly praised.

Scoop Movie 2024: Cast, Release Date, Trailer and Plot of Rufus Sewell Prince Andrew Film
Image
“An hour of television can change everything,” Billie Piper says in the trailer for Scoop, the film based on the true events leading up to Prince Andrew’s explosive 2019 BBC Newsnight interview. The eyes of Britain were on journalist Emily Maitlis (played here by Gillian Anderson) as she grilled the royal (Rufus Sewell) about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The fallout was immediate, as Prince Andrew announced that he was stepping back from his public duties in the days following the broadcast. Scoop, meanwhile, was just nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie.

But how did a son of the Queen of England find himself in the hot seat? In Scoop, directed by Emmy and BAFTA winner Philip Martin (The Crown), Piper plays Sam McAlister, the interview booker for the prestigious current affairs show who managed to secure what was thought to be an ungettable get. Based on McAlister...

Gillian Anderson will ‘Scoop’ up a lucky seventh Emmy nomination
Image
Gillian Anderson was once the face of TV thanks to her role as Dana Scully in “The X-Files.” That show awarded her some healthy, consistent Emmy attention (more on that later) before she underwent a bit of a break from that awards applause for a while. However, Netflix’s “The Crown” gave her career something of a second wind and that Andernaissance (sorry) has continued here with “Scoop.”

Like “The Crown,” Anderson excels here portraying a real-life person in a true story concerning the royal family. While she played Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” she takes on the role of presenter and journalist Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s “Scoop.” This TV movie documents the behind-the-scenes story of how producer Samantha McAlister (Billie Piper) secured the “scoop of the decade” and landed that interview with Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell).

The TV movie is gripping from start to end and the performances are all top-notch,...

Why Gillian Anderson Almost Said No to Netflix’s Prince Andrew Drama
Image
In Netflix’s Scoop, Gillian Anderson plays Emily Maitlis, the real-life former BBC host who, on Nov. 16, 2019, left Prince Andrew squirming as she probed him over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

During the interview, Andrew (Rufus Sewell) infamously failed to distance himself from the convicted sex trafficker, only describing Epstein’s behavior as “unbecoming” and claiming innocence of his own allegations of sexual abuse on account of a cryptic condition in which he did not sweat. (Andrew’s accuser described him as being sweaty when they allegedly danced together at a London nightclub.)

Maitlis maintained her composure as she watched — and in many ways provoked — the train wreck in front of her. “It was exactly the right way for her to pitch it,” Anderson says.

The result made headlines across the globe and earned BBC’s Newsnight several awards. Scoop takes audiences behind the scenes of Maitlis’ and booker Sam McAlister...

This Is What Makes 'Scoop' Unlike the Other Journalist Movies
Image
Journalism films have the power to inform audiences about this important profession and what it seeks to uphold: the truth. From the Oscar-winning Spotlight to the Me Too-focused She Said, stories about investigative journalists who spend months on end interviewing sources and fact-checking information before delivering the scoop are often depicted onscreen. Yet, there are only a few titles that actually focus on other professions inside the newsroom that are just as important when it comes to breaking the news. Netflix's Scoop is an example of a film about journalism, without it being just about the journalist. Based on Sam McAlister's book, the drama project pulls the curtain on the infamous Prince Andrew interview for the BBC, in which he addresses his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The film is centered on McAlister herself (played by Billie Piper), a producer who was a key person...

The True Story Behind Scoop and What the Netflix Movie Leaves Out
Image
Scoop delves into Prince Andrew's infamous BBC interview with Epstein ties but misses key details for a concise, dramatic flair. Some crucial aspects of Prince Andrew's real interview on BBC, including Epstein's death, are snubbed in the Netflix Original movie Scoop. The Netflix film captures intimate details from the real interview, showcasing Prince Andrew's struggles with allegations and the fallout from the scandal.

Released on April 5, 2024, Scoop is a Netflix Original immediately charting among the 10 most-watched movies in the U.S. and U.K. Directed by Philip Martin, the biographical drama recreates the infamous 2019 BBC interview of Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell), in which the Duke of York is interrogated about his ties to disgraced billionaire and convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein (Colin Wells). In addition to clearing security, landing the sensitive scoop, and organizing the live on-air Newsnight interview, the movie ends with Prince Andrew's renouncement of his royal obligations.

‘Scoop’ Makes Splash In UK: Prince Andrew Film Draws Nearly 2.8M Viewers On Netflix
Image
Scoop, the Netflix film chronicling Prince Andrew’s humbling interview on the BBC, has enjoyed a relatively regal reception from British audiences.

Based on a book of the same name by Sam McAlister, the woman who played a central role in securing access to the Duke of York, the feature was watched by 2.75M viewers in its first seven days.

The rating is healthy for Netflix, putting Scoop ahead of other recently launched titles, not least the eye-wateringly expensive 3 Body Problem, which premiered with 1.7M viewers.

Scoop could not quite match fellow royal drama The Crown, however. The Left Bank show’s final season debuted with 2.8M last year, according to official Barb figures supplied by overnights.tv.

The biggest title on Netflix in 2024 has been Fool Me Once’s blockbuster debut of 6.3M viewers in January. Netflix’s UK chief Anne Mensah revealed last month that Fool Me Once...

What Happened To Scoop's Sam McAlister After The Prince Andrew Interview
Image
This article contains mention of sexual assault and sex trafficking.

Sam McAlister's autobiography inspired Netflix's Scoop. McAlister worked as a BBC producer for ten years before stepping away and writing her book. McAlister currently works as a public speaker.

The Netflix movie Scoop is a dramatic retelling of the events leading up to Prince Andrew's 2019 BBC television interview, the interview itself, and the aftermath, and one of the central figures depicted in the film is Sam McAlister, played by Billie Piper. The 2024 biographical drama was directed by Philip Martin and written by Peter Moffat and Geoff Bussetil and features several significant people involved with the revelatory (and controversial) exclusive sit-down interview about Prince Andrew's involvement with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein conducted by Emily Maitlis. Meanwhile, McAlister was the BBC producer who secured the interview.

Aside from Piper as McAlister, the cast of Netflix's Scoop includes Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis,...

Netflix viewers disgusted by ‘unnecessary’ Prince Andrew scene in film Scoop
Gillian Anderson, Rufus Sewell, Keeley Hawes, and Billie Piper in Scoop (2024)
Viewers of the Netflix drama Scoop found themselves disgusted following a scene involving Prince Andrew, portrayed by Rufus Sewell, in a bath.

The scene occurred during the portrayal of the infamous interview that led to the Duke of York’s retreat from public duties.

Scoop, a no-holds-barred drama, delves behind the scenes of the notorious interview, featuring Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis and Billie Piper as Sam McAlister.

While the series takes creative liberties for dramatic effect, one scene, in particular, has sparked intense debate.

In the scene where the BBC airs the contentious interview where Prince Andrew vehemently denies allegations of a sexual relationship with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of assault when she was 17, the portrayal takes a startling turn.

Prince Andrew is depicted taking a bath while millions watch his denial unfold.

Following the interview’s conclusion, he exits the tub to a flurry of alarmed messages on his phone,...

Scoop Review
Image
Plot: An insider account of how the women of “Newsnight” secured Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Review: Sometimes, pursuing a news story is as fascinating as the story itself. From All The President’s Men to Spotlight, countless films have looked at the reporters and journalists who have investigated the most significant revelations of all time and have garnered awards for the recreation of the tireless journey. The distance between the event and the dramatization often reminds audiences of the stakes at play, but Scoop chronicles a news story that occurred just six years ago. Led by Billie Piper as the producer who secured the shocking interview alongside Gillian Anderson, Romola Garai, Keeley Hawes, and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, Scoop has some exciting stories from an insider’s point of view. Still, it fails to generate anything we did not already get from the broadcast itself.

Gillian Anderson, Rufus Sewell, Keeley Hawes, and Billie Piper in Scoop (2024)
CinemaBlind’s Review – 65%

Scoop is a well-made but hard-to-watch film, believe me that’s a good thing. The Netflix film does everything right from its pacing to its performances giving us an insight into the subject and people behind one of the most scandalous things ever to come out of the British Royal family.

Directed by Philip Martin, Scoop sheds some light on what went on behind the scenes of Prince Andrew‘s News Night interview with Emily Maitlis which was later described as less a car crash than “a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion.” Prince Andrew was a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein and was also accused of molesting an underage girl, but he is still walking freely.

Scoop has everything working for it including its main cast who give us convincing performances including Rufus Sewel who was completely unrecognizable under...

‘Scoop’ (2024) Ending Explained & Movie Recap: Who Is Sam Mcalister?
Image
Netflix doesn’t at all try to hold back from making fun of Prince Andrew in their latest film, Scoop. The Philip Martin-directed film is based on former BBC editor Sam McAlister’s book about securing one of the most sensational interviews of Prince Andrew in the history of the BBC. The context is rather grave, as the interview was focused on the grim subject of Andrew’s friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Billie Piper is electrifying as McAlister, and so is Gillian Anderson, who plays Emily Maitlis, the famous British journalist who took the interview. But it is Rufus Sewell who delivers the standout performance as the controversial Prince. However, the film still falls quite flat, as, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really offer anything substantial to the viewers. Despite all the brilliant performances, Scoop remains just another Netflix...

Netflix’s ‘Scoop’ Cast vs. Their Real-Life Counterparts | Photos
Image
Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).

High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

Here are the cast and characters of “Scoop” on Netflix:

Scoop Fact-Check: 8 Biggest Details Left Out From The Real Prince Andrew Interview

This article contains mentions of sexual assault and sex trafficking.

This article contains Spoilers for Scoop

Scoop dramatizes Prince Andrew's interview with BBC Newsnight, highlighting the importance of funding good journalism. Real-life events surrounding Prince Andrew's relationship with Epstein and Maxwell are explored in Scoop. The film delves into Emily Maitlis' motivations for the interview, drawing parallels to her past interviews with powerful figures like Bill Clinton.

Netflix's Scoop is a dramatization of the notorious Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew, so it's inevitable that some elements are left out or changed for dramatic effect. Adapted from Sam McAlister's Newsnight memoir, Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews, Scoop stars Doctor Who's Billie Piper as Sam, and Sex Education's Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis. Scoop Review | Epstein and the Prince Hit Newsnight
Image
Sam McAlister's struggle to secure the Prince Andrew interview forms the new film, Scoop, about the Newsnight interview which discussed his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Class divisions and good performances add depth to an otherwise pointless film. Scoop is much too self-congratulatory and ultimately a depressing reminder that predatory systems of power can't be dismantled so easily.

Netflix's Scoop is a dramatic retelling of the infamous 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew regarding his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell. It's a story that was told more meticulously in the strong British miniseries, A Very Royal Scandal, though Scoop distinguishes itself by largely focusing on the producer Sam McAlister (played by Billie Piper of Doctor Who), who negotiated and secured the interview.

Netflix’s Scoop: What Happened Next?
Image
When the 2019 Newsnight interview finally blew up the time bomb that was Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, not all of the pieces came back down to Earth in the same place. The interview that the Duke of York’s team were hoping would charm the public and rid him of his “Randy Andy” reputation achieved the opposite. Viewers found Prince Andrew to be callous and unsympathetic, while his denials of wrongdoing failed to convince many.

What followed were legal proceedings, a substantial out-of-court settlement, and a great many job resignations. From the prince to his team and the journalists behind the interview, here’s where the major players as featured in Netflix’s Scoop were left.

Days after the Newsnight interview aired, the Duke of York issued a statement announcing that his request to step back from public duties had been granted by Hm the Queen,...

Netflix’s Scoop Review: Self-Satisfied Girlboss Ego Trip
Image
In the final minutes of Netflix’s Scoop, a fictionalised behind-the-scenes account of Newsnight’s infamous Prince Andrew interview, Billie Piper’s character Sam buys a kebab. Two lamb shawarmas – her usual, says the vendor, who gestures at the TV news and asks if she’s seen all this business with the prince? Boy, he’d love to have been in the room when that interview was filmed. Sam McAlister looks wistfully at the screen with the beginning of a smile on her face. “Yeah I did. I saw it,” she tells him, and then turns and leaves.

So humble. So real. So unmotivated by personal glory. Sam McAlister could have told the kebab shop man that she very much was in the room when that interview was filmed, and that as the guest booker on Newsnight, without her it might never even have happened. She doesn’t. The former...

Scoop Ending Explained: What Happened To Prince Andrew After The 2019 Interview
Image
Contains mention of sexual assault and sex trafficking,

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Scoop

Scoop reveals Prince Andrew's downfall post-Newsnight due to his hubris & ties to Epstein. Sam McAlister played a crucial role in shaping Emily Maitlis' interview with Prince Andrew. Amanda Thirsk paid the price for organizing Prince Andrew's disastrous BBC interview.

The ending of Netflix's Scoop only reveals part of the story when it comes to the downfall of Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell) following his disastrous Newsnight review. Based on the book Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews by Sam McAlister, the new Netflix movie tells the story of how the current affairs program secured an exclusive sit-down with Prince Andrew to discuss his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. Told predominantly from the perspective of interview booker Sam McAlister (Billie Piper), Scoop depicts...

Prince Andrew Drama Scoop Explains the Kate Middleton Fiasco
Image
A bizarre sense of déjà vu accompanies Netflix's Scoop, a behind-the-scenes look at Prince Andrew's "car crash" interview about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Director Philip Martin and writer Peter Moffat painstakingly recreate the infamous BBC Newsnight interview, loading up Rufus Sewell with prosthetics to make him look more like the Prince and nudging Gillian Anderson, as journalist Emily Maitlis, toward the right mix of shock and delight that Andrew has made her job so easy.

As reproductions go, the tense sit-down between Andrew and Emily — the result of months of negotiation between talent booker Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) and the Duke of York's private secretary Amanda Thirsk (Keeley Hawes) — remains incredibly faithful to the 2019 broadcast, which led to Andrew's downfall and withdrawal from public duties.

Emily Maitlis On “Unreal” Dueling Prince Andrew Dramas & If She Will Watch ‘Scoop’ On Netflix: “I Will Get Around To It At Some Stage”
Image
Exclusive: Netflix’s dramatization of the BBC’s bombshell Prince Andrew interview is proving to be one of the streamer’s most discussed debuts in some time, but one person has largely kept her silence.

Emily Maitlis was sat opposite the Duke of York for that fateful exchange in 2019, winning plaudits and prizes for her piercing, methodical questioning of the British royal.

Maitlis has not said much about Scoop, partly because she has not been involved in the Netflix film, but also because her time has been spent authoring her own version of the story for Amazon.

Now, in an interview with Deadline, Maitlis has made some of her first comments about Netflix’s adaptation of a book by her former Newsnight running mate Sam McAlister.

“I’ve left them very much to do their own thing because I think the last thing they want is me peeking around the edges offering my [views],” Maitlis said.

‘Scoop’ Review: Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell Find Nothing New in the BBC’s Infamous Prince Andrew Interview
Image
Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.

Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

Scoop Review: Britain's Answer To Spotlight Is Timely & Well-Acted (But Mixed In Message)
Image
The cast shines in Scoop, especially Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, delivering mesmerizing performances. The movie's fast-paced direction by Philip Martin keeps the story engaging and energetic throughout. Despite strong performances, the characters' mixed motivations in the pursuit of the big story lead to flawed portrayals.

As the media landscape continues to grow and the role of news in society becomes all the more prevalent, the world of journalism has become a hot topic for movies and TV. Whether it be the fictional character of HBO's Emmy-winning drama The Newsroom or the Best Picture Oscar-winning true story of Spotlight, the lens of journalists has become a compelling one to explore in the midst of the "fake news" boom and social media giving everyone a voice. While Netflix's Scoop looks to tap into these various themes, it comes up a little short.

The True Story Behind Scoop's Prince Andrew Interview From 2019
Image
The following article contains mention of sexual assault and sex trafficking.

Prince Andrew's BBC interview led to his public downfall in 2019. The BBC negotiated the interview with Buckingham Palace, which serves as the inspiration for Scoop. Emily Maitlis and Sam McAlister played key roles in the interview, setting them up as the main characters of Scoop.

Scoop, which premieres on Netflix on April 5, is a dramatization of the true story behind Prince Andrew's fateful 2019 interview with the BBC. The film follows the efforts to arrange an interview between the news program Newsnight and the disgraced royal. Initially seen by the British Royal Family as a means of combatting the negative press surrounding Prince Andrew's connection to disgraced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, the Prince's answers made the situation more chaotic, all while underscoring the importance of committed press. Scoop dramatizes the events that led to the interview, the interview itself,...

‘Scoop’ Producer Developing “Ambitious, Contemporary” Returning TV Series Starring Sarah Lancashire
Image
Exclusive: The production outfit behind Netflix’s Prince Andrew feature Scoop is working with Sarah Lancashire on an “ambitious, contemporary returning series” that Lancashire will star in.

Lighthouse Film & Television is teaming with Lancashire’s recently launched Via Pictures on the show, we can reveal, which Lighthouse co-founder Radford Neville teased is a “research heavy project inspired by real characters.”

Conversations with networks have already begun and Lancashire will star, contradicting reports that emerged earlier this week that she has retired from acting.

Lancashire launched Via Pictures with husband and former BBC and Banijay UK boss Peter Salmon last year upon the conclusion of Happy Valley, one of the corporation’s biggest dramas of the past decade.

“When we set up Lighthouse in 2019 we talked to Sarah about developing something specifically for her,” added Neville. “In the interim she has set up Via and towards the end of last year...

Three years after winning an Emmy for portraying Margaret Thatcher, Gillian Anderson returns to British politics as a member of the fourth estate in “Scoop.” The Netflix film stars the actress as the “Newsnight” journalist Emily Maitlis, who sat down for a squirm-inducing interview with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, portrayed by a physically transformed Rufus Sewell. The actor has of late been playing an American politician on the streamer’s “The Diplomat.” Watch the full “Scoop” trailer below.

The trailer begins with a voiceover promising that “an hour of television can change everything.” The film follows Billie Piper’s producer Sam McAlister, who is determined to land this major sit-down despite being told she is “chasing a story we’re never gonna get.” Her zeal only intensifies when details about Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein become public knowledge.
