Why The First Star Trek: Enterprise Novel Infuriated The Show's Co-Creator
Image
Many Trekkies have watched every episode of every "Star Trek" show to have aired since the franchise's inception in 1966. That's 900-some episode in total, so it takes a lot of commitment to stay abreast of the whole property. Deep-cut Trekkies, however, have not only seen all 900-some episodes, but have also studied sourcebooks, comics, and oral histories, trying to know as much about the show as possible. The next time you're with a Trekkie friend, ask to see their copy of Larry Nemecek's "The Star Trek The Next Generation Companion" or Rick Sternbach and Mike Okuda's "Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual." I assure you, they have those books. They are required reading on the "Star Trek" syllabus.

Deep-cut Trekkies may also be familiar with the hundreds and hundreds of sanctioned -- but non-canonical -- "Star Trek" novels that have been published over the years. "Star Trek" tie-in novels,...

The 15 Best Episodes Of Star Trek: Enterprise, Ranked
Image
The first "Star Trek" television series of the 21st century was the prequel "Star Trek: Enterprise," running for four seasons from 2001 to 2005. Set approximately a century before the events of "Star Trek: The Original Series," the show covers humanity's early days exploring the galaxy. The series' central starship, the Enterprise Nx-01, is among the first capable of traveling warp five, with this enhanced speed giving it access to an expansive number of worlds. Commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), the Enterprise leads the creation of what would become the United Federation of Planets.

Throughout its four-season run, "Enterprise" provided a unique approach to the "Star Trek" franchise, showing the origins of many of its familiar tropes and concepts. "Enterprise" also featured stories spanning multiple episodes, mixing longer-form storytelling with the franchise's usual episodic format. While "Enterprise" may have seen a mixed reception across its run, including a poorly regarded finale,...

Strange New Worlds Fan Favorite Hemmer Owes A Debt To Star Trek: Enterprise Writer
Image
Lt. Hemmer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds honors the legacy of Andre Bormanis, creator of the Aenar race on Star Trek: Enterprise. Bormanis, a science consultant and writer for Star Trek series, recalls his role in shaping the alien species on the show. Despite his contribution to the Aenar, Bormanis humorously notes there are no alien character royalties in the industry.

Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds owes a debt to Star Trek: Enterprise writer Andre Bormanis, who invented the Aenar. Bormanis was a science consultant and writer for the Rick Berman-era Star Trek series, and he worked on Star Trek: Enterprise as a writer and producer. Bormanis is credited with writing 12 episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, including "Silent Enemy", "Horizon", "The Crossing", "Babel One", "Terra Prime", and, of course, "The Aenar", which introduced the blind subject of the Andorian race.

Section 31 Theory: Michelle Yeoh Is Recruiting Young Star Trek Legacy Characters
Image
Emperor Georgiou may be recruiting young legacy characters from different Star Trek eras for Section 31. The multi-era Section 31 theory is possible, with the potential for familiar characters to join the division played by new actors. Section 31 could change legacy characters like Rachel Garrett by providing stronger characterization and new stories.

Could Star Trek: Section 31 be about Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) uniting legacy characters from across the Star Trek franchise? Section 31 was set up in Star Trek: Discovery season 3 when Emperor Georgiou left Discovery's 32nd century for a personal mission, courtesy of the Guardian of Forever (Paul Guilfoyle). The only clue the Guardian gave regarding Georgiou's destination was that the Mirror Universe of Georgiou's origin and the Prime Universe were "still aligned", to alleviate Georgiou's debilitating symptoms arising from being in both the wrong time and the wrong universe. This suggested Section 31 takes place in an earlier point in the Star Trek timeline.

Star Trek: Enterprise's T'Pol & Trip Had Baby Hopes (But Misunderstand Every 7 Years Rule)
Image
Trip and T'Pol could have had a baby in season 5 of Star Trek: Enterprise, despite a common misunderstanding of Vulcan mating rules. Terra Prime used Trip and T'Pol's DNA to create a clone infant named Elizabeth, sparking the possibility of a human-alien hybrid in the series. Pon farr isn't the only time Vulcans can mate; Trip and T'Pol could have tried to have a baby at any time in their relationship.

Connor Trinneer wanted Commander Trip Tucker and Subcommander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) to try to have a baby if Star Trek: Enterprise season 5 happened, but there is a common misunderstanding regarding the 'rule' that Vulcans can only have sexual relations every seven years. Trip and T'Pol became an unlikely but electric couple starting in Star Trek: Enterprise season 3. The Vulcan Science Officer used to savagely critique good ol' boy Trip, but T'Pol and the Chief Engineer of the Nx-01 Enterprise...

Enterprise’s Hated Finale “Really Bothered Me,” Says Star Trek Actor
Image
Keating found the Enterprise finale disrespectful to the cast, feeling Riker and Troi took away from their last episode. The controversial inclusion of two Next Generation characters ticked off Keating, who believes a standalone episode was needed. Despite initially moving on from the show, Keating now believes the finale was a misstep that disrespected the Enterprise cast.

Lt. Malcolm Reed actor Dominic Keating has revealed that the hated Star Trek: Enterprise finale "really bothered" him. "These Are the Voyages" was the final episode of the canceled Enterprise, but it also served as a finale for the entire Star Trek franchise. To that end, it featured Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) observing the final mission for the Enterprise Nx-01 on the holodeck during the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Pegasus".

The inclusion of Riker and Troi in the Star Trek: Enterprise finale...

10 Section 31 Things To Know Before Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek Movie
Image
Star Trek: Section 31 is a secretive organization within Starfleet that operates autonomously and answers to no one, allowing them to commit reprehensible actions. Section 31 has a long history within the Star Trek universe, existing since the early days of Starfleet and playing a role in events such as the Dominion War and the Federation-Klingon War. The upcoming movie will follow Emperor Philippa Georgiou as she joins Section 31 and confronts her past sins, potentially leading to the downfall of the organization or the erasure of its existence.

As Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Section 31 movie enters production, it's worth revisiting everything known about Starfleet's top-secret organization. The Star Trek: Discovery spinoff movie will see Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) join Section 31, presumably after being returned to the 23rd century by the Guardian of Forever (Paul Gilfoyle). Except for Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31's cast is all new to the franchise,...

Section 31 Isn’t The Star Trek Movie Fans Want But It Hints At Franchise’s Future
Image
Star Trek: Section 31 won't feature recognizable characters besides Michelle Yeoh's Emperor Philippa Georgiou, suggesting there won't be reunions with previous Star Trek characters like Bashir, Reed, or Pike. Section 31 is a smaller-budget venture compared to other potential Star Trek movies, but Michelle Yeoh's clout as an Oscar-winning actor pushed it into production. The success of Star Trek: Section 31 could potentially lead to more made-for-streaming Star Trek movies on Paramount+, featuring different characters and exploring new parts of the Star Trek universe.

Although it's not quite the movie that fans have wanted, Star Trek: Section 31 hints at the future of the Star Trek franchise. Reprising her role from Star Trek: Discovery, Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh stars in Section 31 as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, who traded the golden crown of the Mirror Universe's Terran Empire for Section 31's black badge in Discovery season 2. After the USS Discovery's time...

"Too Many Issues" With Star Trek: Enterprise Comeback, Says Dr. Phlox Actor
Image
John Billingsley cites "too many issues" with Enterprise's cast making a comeback, including Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock having moved on and Connor Trinneer's character being dead. Billingsley humorously pitches a show called "Old Fat Phlox" where he sits on a porch and reminisces about his intergalactic adventures. He jokes that the idea hasn't received much traction in the Star Trek community. Bringing back the Enterprise cast for a live-action comeback is difficult but not impossible. However, the success of animated series like Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy, along with storytelling techniques like flashbacks or time travel, could allow the actors to reprise their roles.

Star Trek: Enterprise's John Billingsley cites "too many issues" standing in the way of his prequel's cast making a comeback. Billingsley played Dr. Phlox, the Denobulan Chief Medical Officer of the Nx-01 Enterprise, for 4 seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Enterprise's Trip & Reed Actors Reenact Classic Star Trek Shuttlepod Episode
Image
"Shuttlepod One" was a pivotal episode in Star Trek: Enterprise. Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating performed a live table read of "Shuttlepod One" on their podcast, The Shuttlepod Show, to mark the episode's 20th anniversary. The episode's in-universe date is November 9, 2151, and it inspired a real-life friendship between actors Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating, who now host The Shuttlepod Show podcast. Star Trek Brings Bakula’s Funniest Enterprise Tech To The 24th Century
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4, Episode 7 - "A Few Badgeys More"

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 7 brings back the hilarious and malevolent character Badgey seeking revenge. Lieutenant Rutherford experiments with adding ancient Starfleet technology, grapplers, to the USS Cerritos' shuttlecrafts, resulting in comedic mishaps. Grapplers, a touch-and-go technology in the era before tractor beams, have become a fun throwback and crossover joke in Strange New Worlds. Star Trek knows grapplers are cool.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 brought back the funniest tech from Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise era. Lower Decks season 4, episode 7, "A Few Badgeys More," saw the return of the malevolent Badgey (Jack McBrayer), who was bent on revenge on his "father," Lieutenant Samanthan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and the USS Cerritos. But before the Lower Deckers learned of Badgey's return, Rutherford was busy experimenting with adding a very old and primitive Starfleet technology...

Star Trek: Starfleet's Most Primitive Technology Failed When Enterprise Needed It Most
Image
Star Trek: Enterprise's Nx-01 Enterprise had grapplers instead of a tractor beam, which failed when they tried to save trapped crew members. Grapplers have gained renewed interest in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with Ensign Boimler and Lt. LA'an Noonien-Singh geeking out over them. It's unclear when Starfleet developed tractor beam technology, but it became commonplace by the time of Star Trek: Discovery and The Original Series.

Star Trek: Enterprise's most primitive technology failed when Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and his crew needed it the most. Archer's Nx-01 Enterprise was Starfleet's first Warp 5 capable starship, allowing humans to explore deep space for the first time. Enterprise launched with the best technology 22nd Starfleet had available, although the Nx-01 lacked deflector shields and photon torpedoes hadn't been developed yet. And, instead of a tractor beam, Archer's Enterprise had grapplers.

Grapplers have gained a renewed interest thanks to Star...

Star Trek: Lower Decks pays homage to Star Trek: Enterprise character Lt. Malcolm Reed through two shout-outs in recent episodes. In "Empathalogical Fallacies," Boimler faces "sacred security officer challenges," including a jigsaw puzzle of Malcolm Reed from Enterprise. The increasing callbacks to Star Trek: Enterprise in Lower Decks highlight the show's newfound appreciation and recognition within the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: very Short Treks calls back to another Star Trek: Enterprise favorite character besides Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer). 18 years after Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled, and Trip Tucker was killed off in Enterprise's controversial series finale, Connor Trinneer played Trip once again in the Star Trek: very Short Treks episode "Holograms All The Way Down." Did Star Trek's Section 31 Exist In The Original Series?
Image
The controversial Section 31 has become a mainstay of modern Star Trek stories, but did it exist in the days of Star Trek: The Original Series? Section 31 was created for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the dark underbelly of Starfleet that went to extreme lengths to protect the citizens of the United Federation Of Planets, lengths that were often deeply immoral and against the Federation's values. Section 31 notably unleashed a morphogenic virus on the Changelings during the Dominion War, which remains a controversial decision.

Section 31's representatives often claimed to have been part of Starfleet from the very beginning, but as the organization wasn't conceived of until Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, there's no evidence of the organization's existence in the episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. That said, further prequel series like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Enterprise would establish Section 31's existence goes back even further than...

Why Are There No Movies In The Star Trek Universe? An Investigation
Image
While "Star Trek" takes place in a technological utopia -- a utopia wherein people can teleport great distances, live in holographic environs, or replicate any food or drink they should want -- there still appears to be room for old media. While the characters on "Star Trek" are typically military officers, they are often careful to attend the theater to see plays, where Shakespeare might still be performed.

On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," there are many, many classical music concerts, and performers still seem to have access to traditional brass, woodwind, and string instruments. Entire libraries may be accessed on a Padd, and Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) once noted that he was attempting to make his way through James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake." But other characters may be more comfortable holding an actual printed book on bound paper. One might be able to create a force field in the future,...
