‘Swarm’ Co-Creator Janine Nabers Touts Dominique Fishback’s Performance “Of The Ages” In Prime Video’s Satirical Horror-Comedy – Contenders TV
Image
Although Dominique Fishback was initially approached for a supporting role in Prime Video’s darkly comedic horror-comedy Swarm, created by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, she knew upon reading the script that she was destined to play its lead character, Dre.

Coming off of projects like Judas and the Black Messiah and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, she said today during a panel for Deadline’s Contenders TV, moderated by Destiny Jackson, she was looking for a project that was going to “excite” and “challenge” her. She recalled telling Glover during one phone conversation: “I don’t want to even catch up to my own self as an actor. I don’t even want to know what I’m going to do next. I want the opportunity to stretch beyond what I’ve been used to,...

Donald Glover On Mentoring Malia Obama With Short Film For Gilga, Landing Liam Neeson Cameo On ‘Atlanta’ & Not Getting Cast On ‘SNL’
Image
Donald Glover is opening up about Gilga, his production company headquartered in Ojai, California. One of the projects that have people buzzing is a short film created by Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former President of the U.S. Barack Obama and former First Lady of the U.S. Michelle Obama.

“The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once,” Glover told GQ magazine in an interview. “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.”

Glover says he’s been mentoring Malia throughout the process and his creative partner at Gilga, Fam Udeorji, weighed in about the former First Daughter adding, “Understanding somebody like Malia’s cachet means something. But we really wanted to make sure she could make what she wanted—even if it was a slow process.”

Donald Glover on Producing Malia Obama’s Short Film, Not Being Hired for ‘SNL’ and That Liam Neeson ‘Atlanta’ Cameo
Image
Donald Glover, through his new production company Gilga, is working with Malia Obama on her first short film.

The actor-writer-producer teased the collaboration with former President Barack Obama’s daughter and a writer on his new Amazon series Swarm, in a GQ magazine cover story published online Tuesday. During the conversation, Glover shared that in addition to backing her new project, he’s also mentoring her.

“The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once. You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around,” he said within a larger discussion about his company’s content ethos.

Glover’s longtime collaborator and creative partner at Gilga, Fam Udeorji, who was also a producer on Guava Island and EP on Swarm, added that the team ultimately wanted to support Obama in whatever she wanted to do.

Malia Obama Developing Short Film at Donald Glover’s Company; He Told Her: ‘If You Make a Bad Film, It Will Follow You Around’
Image
Malia Obama is staying in the Donald Glover business. As part of a new GQ cover story on the “Atlanta” creator, Glover revealed that his newly-created production company, Gilga, is developing a short film with Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama. GQ confirmed Malia is “creating” the short film. It’s unconfirmed at this time if Malia will direct the project.

Malia already has experience working with Glover as part of the writer’s room of his buzzy Amazon Prime Video series “Swarm,” which debuted March 17 on the streaming platform. Malia had a writing credit on the show’s fifth episode, “Girl Bye,” alongside series co-creator Janine Nabers.

As part of the GQ cover, Glover reflected on how he is mentoring Malia in the entertainment world. “The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once,” Glover said.

‘Swarm’ Trailer: Donald Glover Takes on Stan Culture in Amazon Horror Comedy
Image
The pantheon of art about parasocial relationships is filled with hits, from Martin Scorcese’s “The King of Comedy” to Stephen King’s “Misery” to Eminem’s iconic hit “Stan,” which inadvertently created a whole new term for obsessive fans. Now, Donald Glover is making his own contribution to that canon with “Swarm,” a horror comedy about the scary world of pop music fandom. The full-length trailer for the upcoming Prime Video series has been released by Amazon.

“Swarm” stars Dominque Fishback, best known for her role in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” as Dre, a young woman who runs a stan account for the world’s biggest pop star, who — similar to Beyoncé’s Beyhive — has a fanbase known as “The Swarm.” Set in between 2016 and 2018, the show sees Dre, lonely and lost, embark on a cross-country trip that causes her to slowly lose her sanity and engage in multiple bloody murders.

Dominique Fishback in Swarm (2023)
“Swarm” has a release date. The Prime Video dramedy co-created by Donald Glover will premiere March 17, the streamer announced Friday. And along with the release date comes the show’s first teaser, which you can watch now above.

Co-created by Donald Glover and Janie Nabors, the series premiere of “Swarm” comes one week after the Opening Night TV Premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas, on March 10.

Set between 2016 and 2018, the story follows a Beyonce-like pop star’s super fan who experiences a life changing event and heads out on a cross-country journey.

The teaser starts off with Dre, played by Dominique Fishback, in an apparent possessed state, rocking back and forth as we hear a loud bee-buzzing sound in the background. Then a creepy voice asks ‘Who’s your favorite artist?”

On ‘Atlanta,’ Music Always Showed Us Where We Were
Image
If music is a tool that helps viewers gain a better emotional understanding of what they’re watching, then “Atlanta” wielded the songs on its soundtrack like a tricked-out Leatherman with 19 distinct uses (including three different types of can opener). Music playing such a significant role shouldn’t be surprising for a series whose protagonist, Earn Marks (Donald Glover), is managing the burgeoning rap career of his cousin, Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles (Brian Tyree Henry). But that music had a versatility tailored to match “Atlanta,” a show where a harrowing trip to a showbiz house of horrors and a genuinely touching tribute to an animated classic were equally at home.

The needle drops on “Atlanta” often do more than one thing at a time: Informing the show’s specific sense of place, revealing what characters are feeling in ways that add to the actors’ expressions, giving the audience a poetic...

‘Atlanta:’ How Japanese Breakfast and Gil Scott-Heron Were Woven Into Show’s Rap-Centric World
Image
A show about a down-on-his-luck college dropout and his rapper cousin navigating the music industry as the latter’s star rises; created by a multi-hyphenate who, at one point, was a full-time rapper himself; set in what many might argue was the rap capital of the United States for most of the past decade…

You’d think Donald Glover’s FX series “Atlanta” would be a cakewalk for song placements — license a few Migos, Young Thug and Gucci Mane tracks and call it a day — but music supervisors Jen Malone and Fam Udeorji are anything but paint-by-numbers.

While musically, the series pays ample homage to its titular hometown, the pair has worked closely with Glover and the rest of the show’s writers room throughout its four-season run — coming to an end in November — to establish a musical palette that simultaneously reflects Atlanta while also expanding far beyond the city limits.

‘Guava Island’ Behind the Scenes Videos: Meet the Cuban Talent in Donald Glover’s Film
Donald Glover
When Donald Glover announced back in April that he was releasing an hour-long music video starring Rihanna and Letitia Wright, the internet pretty much lost its mind. “Guava Island” premiered at Coachella before streaming on Amazon Prime two days later, and throngs of Glover superfans fell in love with what the multi-hyphenate called “one of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on.” Amazon has just released five new behind the scenes videos introducing some of the talented dancers, musicians, and actors that helped make “Guava Island” so special.

“At its best (or maybe just its most accessible), art is ingenuity,” Glover said in a statement. “I had the pleasure of experiencing this spirit of ‘making what you must with what you have’ collaborating with Cuba’s talented and abundant artists over the course of filming ‘Guava Island.’ The artist’s endeavor has always been the manifesting of an idea,...

Childish Gambino is about to die.

It’s still unclear what, exactly, that means. The next Childish Gambino album, which has been repeatedly teased as the project’s last gasp, could simply be the death of a moniker; it could mean the end of Donald Glover’s music career entirely. Fam Udeorji, Gambino’s longtime manager, is absurdly calm about this, and won’t let on what any of it means.

“I don’t know if you want to hype a death up,” he says. “It’s more so this chapter is over.

Donald Glover’s ‘Guava Island’ to Take on Beyonce’s ‘Homecoming’ at the Emmys
Donald Glover
Donald Glover will be an Emmy contender this year after all. With “Atlanta” on hiatus, the superstar wasn’t expected to be in the running for an award in 2019 — until Amazon grabbed the rights to “Guava Island,” the musical film he shot with Rihanna.

Because “Guava Island” will premiere on Amazon Prime Video first, that makes the film eligible for an Emmy — and the streamer is expected to submit it for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), in addition to writing, directing, and multiple below-the-line categories, all in the variety special field.

Glover’s frequent collaborator Hiro Murai directed “Guava Island” in Cuba, while Stephen Glover wrote the film (based on a story by Royalty). Murai, of course, is an executive producer on “Atlanta” and has directed multiple episodes (starting with the pilot), in addition to videos such as Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” while Stephen Glover is an executive producer...

Rihanna and Donald Glover in Guava Island (2019)
We’ve been hearing teases for months, but ahead of Childish Gambino’s set at Coachella this weekend, fans who aren’t out in the desert will still be able to stream “Guava Island,” the movie that Gambino and Rihanna filmed in secret.

“Guava Island” was shot in Cuba and stars Donald Glover (a.k.a. Letitia Wright of “Black Panther” fame and Nonso Anozie also star.

Teases for the movie started as far back as last year when Glover and Rihanna were spotted together in Cuba in leaked set photos. Glover then premiered a trailer for “Guava Island” at his Pharos Festival in New Zealand in November, which also leaked onto Twitter in a fan-shot video. In recent weeks,...
