'The Bad Shepherd' Indie Film Reaches #2 On Hulu's Streaming Chart
Image
Hulu is home to The Bad Shepherd, a wildly divisive new thriller that is dominating the streaming chart. The indie film failed to overly impress audiences last year, garnering a rotten 39% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that has not stopped subscribers from checking out The Bad Shepherd, which has an exciting premise that answers the question we've all wondered at some point — What would you and your friends do if you came across a bag full of money?

The Bad Shepherd is currently ranked second in Hulu's most-watched movies list (via Flix Patrol). The film follows a group of friends on a hunting trip who accidentally run over an armed woman with a bag full of money. As the trailer suggests, they decide to try to keep the money and get rid of the body, but what later ensues puts their lives in jeopardy in the snowy wilderness. The...

Why Critics and Audiences Are Divided on Jenna Ortega’s ‘Finestkind’
Image
Now available on Paramount+, Brian Helgeland's crime thriller Finestkind polarized audiences and critics upon release in December 2023. Popular Hollywood starlet Jenna Ortega stars in the film as Mabel, a petty drug dealer who meets a group of shipwrecked fishermen and drives a wedge between estranged half-brothers Tom (Ben Foster) and Charlie (Toby Wallace).

Although the film has fared better among general audiences and casual moviegoers than professional film critics, both groups cite similar reasons for its divisive detractors. Ortega fans on the fence about giving Finestkind a chance should prepare for excellent performances and a compelling family tale lost in a sea of confounding melodramatic storytelling and tonal inconsistencies.

Oscar Winner Brian Helgeland on 30-Year Journey to Make ‘Finestkind,’ Most Personal Film of His Career
Image
Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.

The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

Finestkind, which hits Paramount+ on Dec. 15, tells the...

Jenna Ortega & Tommy Lee Jones in Fishing Drama 'Finestkind' Trailer
Image
"You live. You die. It's the inbetween that counts." Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for a fishing industry crime thriller called Finestkind, the latest from writer / filmmaker Brian Helgeland. Ben Foster, Toby Wallace, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jenna Ortega star in this film about a crew of fishermen who tread dangerous waters after their debts start piling up. Set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang. With another brilliantly imposing performance by Jones, the film also reveals itself to be a story about fathers who can’t always be the best examples for their sons. The full cast includes Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar,...

Taylor Sheridan and Tommy Lee Jones Finally Collide in ‘Finestkind’ Trailer (Video)
Tommy Lee Jones

In “Finestkind,” Jones plays the father of two sons who were raised in very different worlds (Ben Foster and Toby Wallace), who reunite over a fateful summer, first putting their father’s fishing boat in jeopardy and then embarking into even more dangerous waters.

The movie also stars Jenna Ortega, Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford. Fun fact: an earlier iteration of...

Tommy Lee Jones
TIFF Review: Finestkind is a Fisherman Crime Drama Swimming in Cringeworthy Melodrama
Tommy Lee Jones
We’ve got dadcore porn here. If you’re a father and you’ve ever wondered if you led your son astray, you could live vicariously through Ray Eldridge (Tommy Lee Jones) and Dennis Sykes (Tim Daly) and know you can always come through at the eleventh hour. Because even though the motto at the heart of Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind is that the time between birth and death is what truly matters, the film reminds us you can actually right all your wrongs from that in-between with a final expression of love. Apology, hug, pile of cash, bullet, or all the above.

It’s funny that Helgeland joked before the screening that this should have been his first film since he knew its world best (he was a commercial fisherman before stumbling upon a book that taught him film schools existed) because it’s all over the place in tone,...

‘Finestkind’ Review: Family Tensions Come To The Surface In Brian Helgeland’s Multi-Purpose Boston Drama – Toronto Film Festival
Image
For an hour, Finestkind is the kind of movie they don’t make any more, and just when you’re starting to adapt to its gentle, circadian rhythms (which is about halfway through), it becomes the kind of movie they make all the time. Though it just about works, it’s a curious hybrid of emotional felladrama and gangster realism, something writer Brian Helgeland has essayed before, notably with his script for Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River. A few years back, this could have been a Malpaso production too, and it’s not hard to imagine Eastwood in the role played here by Tommy Lee Jones, an awards-friendly supporting role that gives the veteran actor his very own mini-Gran Torino.

It opens in Buzzards Bay, the port in Boston’s New Bedford area, where middle-aged sea captain Tom (Ben Foster) is making plans for a fishing trip on his company’s boat,...

‘The Mosquito Coast’ Is an Underwhelming Journey into Madness: TV Review
Image
Allie Fox is a man with a lot of anger to throw around. Like Jackson Pollock using bile instead of paint, the lead of Apple TV Plus’ series “The Mosquito Coast” spreads his rage everywhere — including and especially on the lives of his family, whom he uproots for an adventure in Mexico. Played by Justin Theroux, Allie is a genius inventor who is infuriated by all aspects of American culture, including and especially consumerism, the way our country creates products meant to be indifferently enjoyed then tossed.

What’s surprising, then, about the show that contains Allie is how disposable it feels. Theroux, among the executive producers as well as a star, is working to adapt a novel of the same title by his uncle Paul Theroux; that novel previously was source material for a 1986 Peter Weir film that has many flaws but a clear understanding of Allie Fox’s character.
