On Tuesday, Sony Pictures Classics premiered Eleanor the Great, Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut with June Squibb in the lead role. Truth be told, the awards campaign for Squibb began months ago, when Thelma Star and Johansson presented together at the Academy Awards.

So while the reviews for Eleanor the Great were largely mixed, it comes as little surprise that Squibb has been deemed innocent of its flaws.

Wes Anderson is schemin’ up something, as his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme has just had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. So how did it fare at the world’s most famous fest and does it have a shot at the Palme d’Or?

The way it sounds, The Phoenician Scheme is very much a Wes Anderson movie; that might sound vague and non-descriptive but you know exactly what we mean when we say that. With that, we seem to be looking at more of the same, which isn’t a slight at all. Indeed, if there’s one director whose visual style we want to continue to feast on, it’s Anderson.

Critics have embraced the new Warner Bros. supernatural thriller as the Black Panther filmmaker’s “best movie so far.”

That’s high praise for the director, who broke up with the Sundance movie Fruitvale Station before mining studio intellectual property so successfully with 2015’s Creed and the two Black Panther films for Marvel and Disney.

Sinners is his first original project, a 1930s-set creature feature about twin brothers who encounter blood-thirsty vampires on the same night they open their first juke joint. Coogler, a two-time Oscar nominee, enlisted several of his usual collaborators for the movie, including costume designer Ruth E. The film, which stars Bill Skårsgard as the titular bloodsucker alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe (among many others), is already earning raves from the fortunate folks who got to see it first. Robert Eggers’ gothic tale of obsession “Nosferatu” had its first screenings in New York City and Los Angeles on Thursday, November 7, including an L.A. Academy screening moderated by Guillermo del Toro. Early reactions are in for the 19th-century period piece horror about the title vampire’s (Bill Skarsgård) obsession with a woman named Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp). Nicholas Hoult plays her husband Thomas, sent to Transylvania to ink a real estate contract with Nosferatu, only to end up signing away his marriage and his wife’s soul. But is it not Ellen who was luring Nosferatu to her all along? The rest of the English-accented cast in the period-detailed gothic horror movie includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.

You have such a beautiful neck…and as it seems, Robert Eggers’ latest, Nosferatu, is living its mark on audiences. That might feel like a pun, but this film might be contending for one of the best of the year.

With just three films to his name so far, Robert Eggers quickly solidified himself as one of the premiere horror directors out there — and one isn’t even close to being in that genre: The Northman. However, Eggers might be heading towards the Oscars stage with Nosferatu, as it is earning some serious praise early on.
