Charlie Sheen and Zach Braff Could Be in Extended Family Season 2
Image
Extended Family boasts a star-studded cast with possible celebrity cameos from former co-stars like Zach Braff and Charlie Sheen. Real-life connections between the actors and producers add depth to the sitcom's unconventional family dynamic. Jon Cryer is open to working with Charlie Sheen again, teasing a potential "Urkel-like" moment on the new series that lays ghosts to rest.

Some call it fan service, but one of the most fun parts of being a pop culture fanatic is when a surprise guest turns up in an episode of television or a film. It's even better when the guest appearance or supporting character has some real-life connection and meaning behind the scenes to the project or actors they work with. That may be the case with the new NBC sitcom, Extended Family, which features talent from some of the biggest shows of the 20th century. Mike O'Malley (Glee), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men...

Interview: Mike O'Malley on Extended Family, Hopes for Guts Return
Image
NBC's Extended Family uses classic sitcom tropes to explore a surprising divorce story. Inspired by the lives of co-executive Producers George Geyer, Emilia Fazzalari and Wyc Grousbeck, the series focuses on Jim and Julia (played by Jon Cryer and Abigail Spencer). The pair decide to get divorced after 17 years, but set up a third home so their children Grace (Sofia Capanna) and Jimmy Jr. (Finn Sweeney) never have to move.

This shared space gets complicated when Julia's new boyfriend Trey (Donald Faison) gets involved. It's a sweet-natured series that touches on some heavy aspects of life, and does it with a keen sense of comedy. During an interview with Cbr, Extended Family creator Mike O'Malley discussed mixing heavy emotional topics with broad comedy, how one of the series' central dynamics evolved after production began, and reflects on his hopes for two of his past TV shows: Starz' Stephen Amell...

Jon Cryer: ‘I Don’t Know if I Want to Get in Business’ With Charlie Sheen Again ‘For Any Length of Time’ After He Blew Up ‘Two and a Half Men’
Image
Jon Cryer appeared on the Feb. 9 episode of “The View” and more or less shot down the idea of a “Two and a Half Men” reboot ever being made. Cryer starred on the CBS mega-hit sitcom for 12 seasons, eight of which he co-headlined with Charlie Sheen. Ashton Kutcher replaced Sheen for the final four seasons after Sheen exited the show amid controversy over comments he made about creator Chuck Lorre. Production on the show’s eighth season was cut short after Sheen checked into rehab for drugs.

“Oh gosh, oh gosh I don’t know how that happens,” Cryer said about a reboot. “Thing is, Charlie is doing a lot better now which is wonderful. He and I have not spoken in a few years but he’s doing a lot better, which obviously I am happy about. Chuck Lorre, who produced ‘Two and a Half Men’…one of the...

‘Extended Family’ Review: Jon Cryer, Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison in NBC’s Amiable Low-Stakes Sitcom
Image
In the aftermath of Must-See TV, there was a stretch of time when it seemed like NBC was doing comedy outreach for TV critics, constantly renewing shows like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place and Superstore not because they had huge audiences, but because the audiences they possessed were fervent and vocal.

With the initial success of the Night Court reboot and the cancelation of the ostensibly edgier or more niche — some, like me, might say “better,” but to each their own — American Auto and Grand Crew, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for NBC to think that the way forward is broader and more traditional comedies.

If NBC’s new Extended Family is an example of that way forward, there are, at least, worse fates. This is a multi-camera family sitcom of the most traditional type, with a premise so thin it’s barely a premise at all. In...

‘Extended Family’ Stars Explain Their Twisted Dynamic in NBC Sitcom
Image
“We’re in the midst of a casting emergency. We’ve got to find a 7-foot-tall basketball player, and that’s tricky. A Serbian,” explains Jon Cryer as to why his phone keeps pinging during an interview. The actor, famous for 12 seasons of Two and a Half Men, was in a full-court press to get his new sitcom, Extended Family, running at full speed after a production pause due to the actors’ strike. Cryer plays affable Jim Kearney, amicably split from dynamo crisis manager Julia Mariano (Timeless star Abigail Spencer). They’re proud “pillars of divorce society,” as Spencer says. Their kids, 13-year-old Grace (Sofia Capanna) and 11-year-old Jimmy Jr. (Finn Sweeney), stay at the house, called “the nest,” while mom and dad take turns living with them. It’s a slam-dunk setup until Julia announces she’s marrying Trey Taylor (Scrubs vet Donald Faison), the wealthy owner of the NBA’s Boston Celtics.

NBC Midseason Premiere Dates: One Chicago & ‘Law & Order’ Dramas Set January Return, Comedies Get December Start
Image
NBC, the only broadcast network to have original, homegrown scripted series on the fall schedule with The Irrational and Found, will also launch most of its strike-impacted scripted slate the fastest.

The network has announced its midseason premiere dates, which include mid-January returns for Wolf Entertainment’s three One Chicago and three Law & Order dramas on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

That is a month before dramas on the other major broadcast networks are set to return with new episodes and a couple of weeks before any scripted series elsewhere come back. It is a testament to the well oiled machine that Wolf Entertainment is. As Deadline has reported, the company is capable to start delivering new episodes after as little as two months if starting from scratch with no banked scripts.

Had the SAG-AFTRA strike ended sooner after the WGA work stoppage, that may have happened; the Wolf Entertainment...

New NBC Comedy ‘Extended Family’ Re-Starts Production, Kicking Off Scripted TV’s Post-Strike Comeback
Image
Exclusive: That was quick. Just four days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, including a weekend, the new NBC multi-camera comedy series Extended Family started production on Monday Nov. 13.

Mike O’Malley’s family comedy, starring Jon Cryer, Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison, had shot six episodes before the strike. The series, from Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, had scripts ready to go, allowing the studios to get everyone in place within a couple of days after the end of the actors work stoppage.

Lionsgate TV Chairman Kevin Beggs alluded to the fast turnaround on Lionsgate’s earnings call last Thursday, Nov. 9, the day the SAG-AFTRA strike ended.

“We’re back to production immediately,” he said. “We have two network comedies that start shooting again on Monday.”

Beggs did not provide titles but according to sources, he was referring to Extended Family, which started production Monday and indie studio’s single-camera comedy Ghosts,...

Upfronts 2023: Full List of New Series Orders (Updating)
Image
Updated: The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 15-17 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.

Upfronts are always a hectic time, but this year it’s even more so because of the writers strike that began May 2. Writers and many actors are sitting out the upfront presentations in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. The promise of WGA pickets surrounding all major events spurred Netflix to make a hasty decision to switch to a virtual presentation rather than an in-person event at the company’s Paris Theater.

As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, Disney, CBS, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC, Fox, the CW and other major players in the upfront.

Image
NBC has finally released its schedule for the 2023 to 2024 TV season, and this time around new series from Jon Cryer and Tom Hanks are leading the charge alongside network staples. NBC’s fall schedule will include three new scripted series as well as a new night of Big Ten Football.

“Lopez vs. Lopez” and “Law and Order: Organized Crime” will also officially be returning, though they’re not set to premiere until midseason. According to Jeff Bader, President of Entertainment Program Planning Strategy for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, “Organized Crime” is currently undergoing a showrunner change and does not currently have a showrunner. “It actually is best for the show to have some time to regroup, and it’ll come on as part of the Thursday lineup later in the season,” Bader told TheWrap.

As for “American Auto,” “Grand Crew” and “Young Rock,” NBC has yet to make a decision...
