Image
Outer Banks season 5 is starting filming very soon, but things are going to look a lot different on set for the final season without Rudy Pankow, who left the series after four seasons. Outer Banks season 5 will be the first season without JJ Maybank as a key character.

In the Outer Banks season 4 finale, JJ was killed by his biological father, Chandler Groff, played by J. Anthony Crane. After burying JJ in Morocco, John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Kiara (Madison Bailey), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) are ready to get revenge.

Heading into season 5, there are a few characters who will definitely play a bigger role without JJ. Let's get the list started with Kiara!

Why Did 'Outer Banks' Kill Off One of the Main Characters in Season 4?
Image
'Outer Banks' left fans devastated and outraged after its fourth season killed off a fan-favorite character: Rudy Pankow's JJ.NETFLIXHow Did 'Outer Banks' Season 4 End?The second part of 'Outer Banks' Season 4 premiered on November 7.Netflix

Viewers experienced a whirlwind of emotions after Outer Banks aired its Season 4 – Part 2 on November 7. The final episode saw Rudy Pankow's JJ and Madison Bailey's Kiara finally getting the Blue Crown they had been looking for and running for it in Morocco.

Suddenly, JJ's biological father — J. Anthony Crane's Chandler Groff — grabbed Kiara and threatened her with a knife, forcing his son to give him the treasure. He soon fatally stabbed JJ and left him to die in Kiara's arms.

"Take care of the others. I love you, Kie," JJ told Kiara before taking his last breath.

"It's something that's engineered to be gratuitous," showrunner Shannon Burke said of the death in an interview with EW.

JJ's Most Heroic Outer Banks Season 4 Moment Has A Tragic Deeper Meaning
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Outer Banks season 4's ending!Emphasizing that the safety and lives of his friends are more important to him than anything else, JJ makes some dangerous, heroic moves throughout Outer Banks season 4, with one particular scene having a meaningful connection to his tragic backstory. Before JJs death in Outer Banks season 4 finale, he makes a series of selfless sacrifices that put his life at risk in order to help the other Pogues. His decision to give Groff the Blue Crown and save Kie ultimately culminated in his death, which happened just one episode after JJ nearly died saving Sarah from the ocean.

Though Sarah Cameron almost dying in Outer Banks has become a series-long trope, it seemed like her fate was going to tragically be sealed after falling off the boat in a storm. Sarah becomes stranded without a lifejacket, with John B looking...

Demon Slayer's First Episode Shows Why the Anime Is One of the Best
Image
Some anime series take a while to ease into the action, ramping up gradually before the series' most exciting, heart-racing moments occur. Other popular shonen series, like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, for example, model this slow escalation, taking their time before portraying serious death, violence, and gore. The same cannot be said about Demon Slayer though. In the very first episode, aptly titled "Cruelty," I was caught off guard by the sheer brutality and sorrow that unfolded in the first few minutes alone.

The first episode of Demon Slayer was phenomenal at capturing my attention and immersing me in the story. Rather than introduce the characters in a lighthearted manner, episode one pulls no punches, thrusting viewers directly into the horrors to come in Demon Slayer's world that is plagued by violent and bloodthirsty creatures called demons. Before I even knew any of the characters' names, who they were,...

All 4 Outer Banks seasons ranked from worst to best
Image
Outer Banks season 4 just premiered on Netflix on Oct. 10. The final five episodes of season 4 were added to Netflix on Friday, Nov. 7. Since then, Outer Banks has been the most popular show on Netflix. And, it also means that it's time to update the ranking of all four seasons of Outer Banks.

Outer Banks is actually one of the most popular Netflix shows of the last few years. So far, there are four seasons of Outer Banks on Netflix. The series premiered on the streamer in April 2020, and we saw the second season in July 2021, followed by season 3 in February 2023. Netflix renewed Outer Banks for season 4 just before the season 3 premiere. Now, Outer Banks season 5 is in the works on Netflix!

I have a confession: I’m a massive Outer Banks fan. I’ve seen all three seasons multiple times, and I don’t think any season is bad. Despite...

Why Outer Banks Really Killed Off That Character In Season 4's Ending
Image
Warning! This article contains major Spoilers for Outer Banks season 4, part 2!Though JJs death in Outer Banks season 4 finale came as a massive shock to audiences, the plans for his fate had been laid long before. Over the years, it seemed as if Outer Banks main characters, the Pogues, had enough plot armor and luck to keep them immune from death. Sarah has almost died in every season, with John B, Kiara, and Pope also surviving numerous lethal situations on their treasure hunts over the first four seasons. However, Outer Banks finally took the plunge and killed off JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), the Pogue-est of all Pogues, in season 4.

A fan-favorite character, John Bs best friend, the wild card, and, eventually, Kiaras boyfriend, not much could have prepared audiences for JJ to be the Pogues first death, especially after Outer Banks revealed JJs real identity and backstory only a few episodes earlier.

Outer Banks season 4 episode 7 begins right when episode 6 ended. JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) returned to Goat Island to confront Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) about the fact that he is JJ’s father. He looks at the portrait of Larissa Genrette on the wall, and it’s clear that he recognizes the resemblance between Larissa and him.

He asks Groff if he is his father, but Groff denies it. JJ reveals that Luke Maybank (Gary Weeks) was the one who told him that Groff was his father. Groff tries to lie again. JJ asks what really happened to his baby. Groff says that the baby drowned, but they never found the body.

It’s a very weird exchange, but they don’t have long before things hit the fan.

Outer Banks season 4 episode 6 recap: ‘The Town Council’
Image
Outer Banks season 4 part 2 picks up immediately after episode 5, “Albatross,” when Luke Maybank (Gary Weeks) reveals to JJ that he’s the son of Larissa Genrette (Tommi Rose) and Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane).

JJ still doesn't believe that he's the son of Larissa and Groff.

In the first scene of Outer Banks season 4 episode 6, “The Town Council,” we get a flashback to baby JJ. Luke helps soothe JJ while Larissa struggles with her relationship with her husband. Luke grows close with Larissa before Groff reveals she’s not doing well. Groff brings JJ to Luke’s house to give his parents a break.

Groff pays Luke to take JJ behind Larissa’s back, which is a bit strange, right? Like, it’s straight kidnapping. Larissa reportedly drowns with her son, which is not true because obviously Luke has JJ. Groff convinces Luke to keep JJ without telling the Genrettes that he’s alive.

Alright, there's a lot to break down here. This is so exciting and overwhelming in the best way. Let's start with Poguelandia 2.0. Unfortunately the man that had been at the auction against them when they first got JJ's home back seems to make good on his promise to rezone the area. This means that John B, JJ, Sarah, Kiara, and Cleo would have to give it up. And as Kie says in the trailer, it seems like they're now homeless and have nothing left. Of course...

Everyone Kie Dates In Outer Banks Explained
Image
When not out searching for treasure or sticking it to the "Kooks", Kie from Outer Banks has had an interesting romantic history through the show's first few seasons. Premiering on Netflix in 2020, Outer Banks follows a group of working-class teens (known as the "Pogues") who live in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina and fight against the wealthy summer residents known as "Kooks" while also searching for lost treasure. The series gained immediate attention for its multi-faceted storytelling and the way it deftly blends teen romance, social commentary, and action-adventure into one accessible package.

Critics gave Outer Banks modest praise (via Rotten Tomatoes), and the over-the-top melodrama was largely balanced out by the adept interpersonal stories and summer vibes. Netflix's best teen series represent an obvious push by the streamer to beef up its young adult content, and Outer Banks represents the culmination of that idea. Kiarra "Kie" Carrera...

Outer Banks season 4 part 1 takes the show back to its earlier seasons, where violence against the Pogues was often taken to the extreme. Season 3 saw Topper (Austin North) become borderline murderous after Sarah (Madelyn Cline) led him on to get...

Outer Banks season 4 episode 5 definitely leaves you wanting more, in a good way! (Review)
Image
After the major cliffhanger we were left with in episode 4, Outer Banks season 4 episode 5, "Albatross," gives us an answer as to what happens with the Pogues when Shoupe shows up and they have Terrance's dead body lying in their living room. Yeah, not a good look. Here's our review of the episode of the Netflix series. Spoilers Below.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix © 2024

Alright, so Shoupe shows up to Poguelandia 2.0 looking for JJ after the parents of the Kooks at the beach saw the video of him threatening to kill them all. They just want an excuse to take down the Pogues. Rude. The one problem is that Terrance's body is still there, and they end up having to hide him behind the couch right where Shoupe and JJ go to talk. Oh my goodness. Definitely a heart-racing moment for them and us!

Outer Banks season 4 episode 4 takes the show back to its roots in the best way (Review)
Image
The outer banks certainly are a unique place to grow up and live. And based on the way these North Carolina kids have grown up, of course they're fans of the water and it's a huge part of their lives. That's why Outer Banks season 4 episode 4, "The Swell," is a fitting title. And as the tides grew enough for the Kooks and Pogues to surf, so did the tension. Here's our review of the episode on Netflix. Spoilers Below.

Oh my goodness. Every time I think I've reached the point of the most hatred for the Kooks, they go and do something even worse. After the cliffhanger of the second episode of Wes Genrette now dead and the Pogues driving their boat right to his home with Shoupe there to investigate, of course he's going to question them. John B, Sarah, Pope, and Cleo's interrogation that's not an interrogation was hilarious and the exact lighthearted moment we needed from them. Outer Banks season 4 episode 2's watery hunt for treasure puts the story back on track (Review)

It's time for our review of Outer Banks season 4 episode 2, "Blackbeard." I honestly liked this one more than the first episode as I feel like it brought the essence of what Obx on Netflix is all about back. Ready to jump in to our thoughts? Keep reading! Spoilers Below.

Alright, that watery hunt for the treasure was everything and really showcases what the Pogues are all about. Yes, they really can do anything if they work together. We saw that in the premiere with them building their surf shop. But when they put their heads together on a mission of sorts, I felt the adrenaline running through me!

Outer Banks season 4 episode 1 review: The Pogues' path to a new treasure hunt in the premiere feels forced
Image
Outer Banks season 4 part 1 is finally here on Netflix, and we are so psyched! It's been a long wait, but we're finally here and our favorite Pogues are back. Outer Banks season 4 episode 1, "The Enduro," starts the adventure off a bit slow, though it still did have many good moments. Here's our review. Spoilers Below.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix © 2024

The main focus of the premiere episode of the fourth season is catching us viewers up on what happened in the last 18 months between when the Pogues found El Dorado and then were named heroes in their town as we saw at the end of season 3. So what were they up to? Well if there's one thing you definitely can't say about John B, Sarah, Pope, Kie, JJ, and Cleo is that they're lazy. These guys definitely do not shy away from hard labor!

With them finding the gold, of course they're entitled to it.

Outer Banks season 4 episode 3 recap: ‘The Lupine Corsairs’
Image
It’s the Pogues vs. Sheriff Shoupe (Cullen Moss) in the first scene of Outer Banks season 4 episode 3, “The Lupine Corsairs.”

At the end of the second episode, the Pogues minus JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Kie (Madison Bailey) stumbled upon an active crime scene. Then, Shoupe starts interviewing John B (Chase Stokes), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). They actually tell the truth, mostly. Of course, they left out the important part that they actually found Elizabeth’s amulet.

Then, the Pogues bump into the last person to see Wes (David Jensen) alive, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), his own son-in-law. And, let’s be real. He’s shady for real for real. He tells Pope and the gang that he intends to honor the deal that Wes made with the Pogues.

At this point in the series, the Pogues are getting pretty good at picking up vibes.

Outer Banks season 4 episode 2 recap: ‘Blackbeard’
Image
The Pogues are about to embark on their next adventure in Outer Banks season 4 episode 2, “Blackbeard.”

Remember, at the end of season 3, the Pogues were approached by Wes Genrette (David Jensen), a mysterious old man, who wants the Pogues’ help in finding Blackbeard’s treasure. We saw that again in the season 4 premiere. For a time, it looked like they were just going to dive right in, but there’s a lot more to Wes’s interest in Blackbeard’s treasure.

The Pogues agree to find an amulet that belonged to Blackbeard’s wife, Elizabeth Outer Banks. (L to R) Anthony Crane as Groff, David Jensen as Genrette in episode 402 of Outer Banks. Cr. Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix © 2024

Outer Banks season 4 part 1 ending, explained
Image
The Outer Banks season 4 part 1 ending is definitely a big cliffhanger! Well, there are a few big cliffhangers actually in Outer Banks season 4 episode 5, "Albatross."

For most of the season, the Pogues were just interested in paying off their property taxes. After JJ gambled away the last of the money from the El Dorado gold, the Pogues were in a rough spot, and Wes Genrette (David Jensen), who we met at the end of Outer Banks season 3, threw the Pogues a lifeline.

In exchange for finding the amulet that belonged to Elizabeth Teach, the wife of Blackbeard, in Blackbeard's wrecked ship, Wes would give the Pogues $50K, more than enough to cover the cost of the taxes and get the business back up and running.

The plan was going so well until it hit a snag! Another group, a violent one, was also looking for the amulet, which holds clues...

Image
The following contains spoilers for the Demon Slayer manga.

The story of Demon Slayer tells the broader tale of the Demon Slayer Corps' never-ending war against the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji, while the main narrative focuses on one particular hero: Tanjiro Kamado. Tanjiro wasn't there when Muzan rose to power and the Corps declared war on him, but Tanjiro did live to see the final battle against Muzan and the Upper Demons, and he was right there for all the biggest and best battles. At age 13, Tanjiro never would have expected to face the demon king himself, but just over two years later, that's exactly what he did.

Like many shonen heroes, Tanjiro Kamado had humble origins and trained hard to become the right kind of hero to save the world from certain doom, a great personal journey that involved hard work, bloody battles, meeting new friends, suffering horrible losses,...

‘Terror Tuesday: Extreme’ Episode 6 “Girl Next Door” Recap & Ending Explained
Image
The anthology Terror Tuesday: Extreme is inspired by tales told by listeners of a radio show—true horror stories that should make you wonder what you’ve done wrong to torture yourself with such a show. But watching Girl Next Door didn’t really have me squirming in fear or locking my doors. Maybe it’s because I’m not a man, and I’d imagine this one’s targeted at lecherous dudes who don’t know how to control their desires. Anyway, Girl Next Door stars Nat Kitcharit, who international fans such as myself would’ve seen in Delete. Nat plays “Bird,” a man who has just moved into a new apartment with the help of his friend, when suddenly strange things start to occur.

Spoiler Alert

Why Doesn’t Bird Pick Up His Mom’s Calls?

Film Review: Wash Away (2023) by Ikunosuke Okazaki
Image
Humanity, cleanliness, memories, and self-worth are explored in Ikunosuke Okazaki's latest drama, “Wash Away,” a film with good intentions but rather average execution. In the movie, Okazaki focuses on the business operations of soaplands, bathhouse services where women wash men's bodies. The practice, while common in Japan, is controversial due to many merely viewing the operation as a front for prostitution. Alongside this story component are plot elements of caring for the older generation. Much was based on the director's experiences caring for his grandmother, who has dementia.

Wash Away is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival

Kana lives a glamorous lifestyle and works at a Tokyo soapland where she washes men's bodies. Despite the consistent income, she feels uncertain about her future due to the negative perception of her work profession, and suffers from loneliness. One day, she is asked by her family to help care for her long-forgotten grandmother,...

Naruto: Every Member Of The Akatsuki, Ranked Weakest To Strongest
Image
Naruto's Akatsuki is a powerful and iconic group of anime villains, with members who can take on elite ninjas and Tailed Beasts. Some members, like Kie and Daibutsu, were weaker and easily defeated by stronger members like Madara Uchiha. Stronger members, like Kyusuke and Kisame Hoshigaki, possessed impressive abilities, but still couldn't compete with the likes of Tobi and the other elite criminals.

Naruto's Akatsuki are some of the most iconic anime villains ever, and their members ranks among the strongest too. One of the most enduring villainous groups in the franchise, the Akatsuki were founded by ninja who abandoned their homelands with the group's motivations changing as the story progressed. Unfortunately for Naruto’s heroes, those goals generally involve mass death and destruction.

Formally a means to stop warring nations from decimating smaller communities, the Akatsuki became an antagonist force after its leader grew to believe that the only...

Demon Slayer: Every Character Death And When They Occurred

Demon Slayer has become one of the best and most popular shonen action anime series of the current era. It's a straightforward but charming and gripping story about protagonist Tanjiro Kamado and his quest to restore his sister Nezuko's humanity while fighting demons, and there is plenty of carnage along the way. More than a few characters have already lost their lives in Demon Slayer, including major ones, and many more will perish in future seasons.

Looking back, it's no surprise when "redshirt" characters like Ozaki die in the anime, but it's a total shock when powerful heroes perish in battle, and it's an immense relief when the strongest villains also die in combat. Now, Demon Slayer fans can take stock of who's been killed off so far in the anime and what it means and see how it raises the stakes for future seasons.
