Just a few weeks after the release of the armed forces “dramedy” Dog, Hollywood calls upon another of its “hunkiest” action stars/leading men to don the “camo” and “gear up”. Now there’s no specially trained canines to chase after in this film, but like Channing Tatum’s Briggs, this movie’s focus wants desperately to get “back in” and rejoin his “band of brothers” in the current “hot spot”. If only he was given a road trip/mission like Briggs. That’s the main reason his “title” changes. He’s not “the soldier”, but rather The Contractor.

Though this description could apply to many in the shifting job market over the past few years, it is the dangerous and bloody plight at the heart of Tarik Saleh’s new film “The Contractor.”

Part action flick, part suspenseful drama, “The Contractor” stars Chris Pine as James, an Army special forces sergeant wounded in action, who is functionally reliant on painkillers for his knee. A change in leadership sends James packing, honorably discharged but stripped of his benefits for his drug usage.

This leaves James in the same place as many of his fellow soldiers: in debt, desperate, drug-addicted, and unfit for civilian life. He ignores calls from utility companies, with his wife (Gillian Jacobs) and son (Sander Thomas) feeling the stress quickly folding in on their humble lives.

The “Bourne” movies revivified the espionage genre with their nimble, scrappy, down-and-dirty action. But they weren’t as widely imitated as one might have expected, which leaves “The Contractor” feeling like a relatively fresh chip off a not-so-old block. Chris Pine stars as a forcibly decommissioned U.S. Army careerist whom financial straits push him into a sketchy private militaristic security job. Needless to say, that goes south in a hurry.

Swede Tarik Saleh’s first American feature is more impersonally commercial than prior projects (including 2017 Sundance jury prize winner “The Nile Hilton Incident”), and more efficient than memorable as a medium-scaled adventure exercise. Still, being a solid cut above average is good enough, given so much formulaic mediocrity among thrillers cluttering the streaming market. Already released in several territories during March, the film is scheduled for launch to U.S. theaters, digital and on demand platforms April 1.

The bloodbath at ABC continues!

Comedies Speechless and Splitting Up Together are the latest cancellations at the Alphabet network, it has been announced. 

Speechless lasted three seasons before the plug was pulled. Moving to a new night this season, it tumbled almost 60 percent in the demo. 

In live + same day metrics, it is averaged 2.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating. It did get a minor bump with delayed viewing factored in.

It was ABC's least-watched scripted series, so the cancellation is not completely surprising. ABC did own the show, so many thought it stood a decent shot at being renewed. 

However, it seems the network is going in a different direction. 

Speechless starred Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Cedric Yarbrough, Mason Cook, Micah Fowler, and Kyla Kenedy. 

As for Splitting Up Together, the rom-com was not owned by ABC and was pulling in anemic ratings all season long.

ABC has split up with Splitting Up Together after two seasons.

The Emily Kapnek-developed sitcom, based on a Danish TV series, stars Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson as a the couple whose relationship comes alive again after they get divorced. With that premise, the duo and their three kids live in the same house with one living upstairs and doing the parenting while the other lives downstairs on alternate weeks.

Diane Farr, Lindsay Price, Olivia Keville, Van Crosby and Sander Thomas also co-starred in Splitting Up Together.

An eight-episode midseason replacement that debuted March 27 last year, Splitting Up Together was given another season in May last year, with a full order handed out in November. Last year, ABC introduced three sitcoms during the regular season and canceled two, with only the steady Sut making the longer-term cut.

“Splitting Up Together” creator Emily Kapnek has moved from Warner Bros. to ABC Studios, where she has signed a new overall deal.

Under the three-year deal, Kapnek will create and oversee new projects from her production company Piece of Pie for ABC Studios. ABC is the current home to “Splitting Up Together”, and previously aired Kapnek shows “Selfie” and “Suburgatory.”

“Splitting Up Together,” which first premiered last season, hails from Kapnek’s Piece of Pie Productions, Ellen DeGeneres’s A Very Good Production and Warner Bros. Television.

ABC has given back orders to Tuesday comedy series The Kids Are Alright and Splitting Up Together. With that, the network has picked up additional episodes of all of its fall series that did not have full-season orders.

ABC would not specify the size of the pickups for freshman Kids Are Alright and sophomore Splitting Up Together beyond calling them full-season orders. I hear Kids Are Alright has received a Back 9 order for a traditional 22-episode full season, while Splitting Up Together will produced five additional episodes for a 18-episode second season.

Kids Are Alright, from ABC Studios, has been the stronger ratings performer of the two, as the 1970s blue-collar family comedy, airing at 8:30 Pm, is benefiting from a stronger lead-in from The Conners. ABC has given full-season orders to two more of its comedy series, “The Kids Are Alright” and “Splitting up Together.”

“The Kids Are Alright,” from creator and executive producer Tim Doyle, joins ensemble comedy “Single Parents,” the Nathan Fillion-led “The Rookie” and the drama “A Million Little Things” to become the fourth freshman series to get a full pickup from the Disney-owned network.

Led by Jenna Fischer, “Splitting Up Together” is in its second season, but had initially received a more conservative order from the network when it was renewed in May. ABC took a similar approach with the “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff “Station 19.”

Single-camera Splitting Up Together premiered March 27 to solid numbers — 2.1 Live+same day in 18-49 — and 7.2 million viewers — thanks in no small part to being the lead-out of the hugely rated debut of the revived Roseanne. Since then Splitting Up Together has settled in with about half those numbers.
