Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) is getting the remake treatment couresty of director Chuck Russell, who was bringing us the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the remake of The Blob back in the days when Witchboard was gathering its earliest fans. JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols was able to watch the remake last year (you can read his review at This Link) and talk to Russell and star Madison Iseman about it (you can watch the interview Here) – and now, we finally know when a wider audience will be able to check it out. The Witchboard remake is set to be released on August 15th – and with that date right around the corner, the Motion Picture Association ratings board has given the film an R rating for strong bloody violence, gore, language, drug content, some sexual content and brief nudity.

Highland Film Group has bulked up its AFM slate and acquired international sales rights to Fantasia entry Witchboard from The Mask director Chuck Russell.

The reimagining of the 1986 horror film follows Emily and her fiancé Christian, who are preparing to open a café business in New Orleans when Emily discovers an ancient artifact once used to summon spirits.

When Emily becomes obsessed with the witchboard’s power, Christian seeks the help of an occult expert who lures the couple deeper into the occult. They find themselves in a race against time to break the board’s deadly curse before Emily becomes its next victim.

Drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs just showed writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) on his Shudder series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs this past Friday, so today seems like the perfect day for a Witchboard remake casting announcement. Deadline reports that Madison Iseman of the short-lived I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series, Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building), Antonia Desplat (Shantaram), and Charlie Tahan (Ozark) star in the film alongside the previously announced Jamie Campbell Bower, who caught a lot of attention last year for playing the villainous Vecna in season 4 of Stranger Things.

Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) is one of my all-time favorites, and we’ve been hearing rumblings of a remake for a long time now. Going all the way back to the 2007, in fact. Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer director Mark Vadik was attached to write and direct the film in 2011, then in 2019 we heard that Chuck Russell – whose credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob (1988), The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King – had signed on to direct the film. And it looks like the Witchboard remake is actually going to happen with Russell at the helm.
