Nicholas Colia’s feature directorial debut “Griffin in Summer” is aptly getting a summer release. The writer-director helms the indie coming of age story that debuted at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and subsequently won the Founders Award at the festival for best U.S. narrative feature and best screenplay in a U.S. narrative feature. The film also landed a special jury mention for director Colia, who went on to be nominated for the Someone to Watch Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
“Griffin in Summer” centers on an ambitious 14-year-old playwright Griffin Nafly (Everett Blunck) who is determined to self-produce a divorce drama titled “Regrets of Autumn” while living with his mom (Melanie Lynskey). Yet a newfound friendship with Brad (Owen Teague), an older performance artist and handyman, changes Griffin’s plans for stardom. Kathryn Newton and Abby Ryder Fortson co-star.

Just one week after yet another non-update on the status of Happy Death Day 3, franchise star Jessica Rothe announced at a double feature screening of the first two movies that the long-awaited third installment in the horror-comedy franchise is now “moving forward”!
“The third movie is moving forward,” Jessica Rothe said on stage at the American Cinematheque last night, with Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon by her side.
Landon himself added, “It is moving forward.”
It’s been six years since the release of Happy Death Day 2U, with fans spending these past six years wondering why the financially successful franchise hasn’t yet made its return. Landon recently revealed that Universal and Blumhouse at one point considered doing a third installment as a three-part miniseries for Peacock, which of course didn’t end up happening.

Following her executive production work on Prime Video’s Música, in which she also starred along the film’s writer and director Rudy Mancuso, as well as her EP role on the streamer’s romantic comedy Upgraded, in which she starred alongside Archie Renaux and Marisa Tomei, Camila Mendes’ latest double-duty project takes place in the world of fashion. Idiotka is an acquisition title out of the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it will premiere Wednesday.
“This project came through a mutual friend that I shared with our producing partner, Tess Cohen, a friend that I knew from high school. It’s very random, but awesome. It gripped me,” Mendes told Deadline of the film ahead of its premiere Wednesday. “I called my producing partner right away, Rachel Matthews, and I was like, we gotta do this. She’s like, ‘Babe, I’m with you. I just read the first two pages and I’m in.

When it comes to the film industry, there is no shortage of ‘nepo baby,’ short for nepotism kids who have found a place in the industry thanks to their famous parents, relatives, or friends. Over the years, several actors, directors, and more have been labeled as such by fans, having their ‘nepo baby’ tag overshadowing their work and talent.

This post contains spoilers for episode four of "The Penguin."
Over its first three episodes, "The Penguin" included several subtle Easter eggs that allude to wider Batman lore. The character of Rex Calabrese, of whom Oz talks so highly in episode one, is a villain from the "Batman" comics, while that same episode gave us a neat spin on Robin's origin story using the show's biggest supporting character. There are even more hidden nods to Bat-history throughout "The Penguin," with names of writers and producers appearing on documents and areas of Gotham named after prominent "Batman" writers of years past.
But on the whole, the show has tried its best to stay away from overt references to the Dark Knight himself. Prior to its debut, showrunner Lauren LeFranc made clear that she was crafting a standalone series that would not rely on Robert Pattinson's hero from "The Batman...

We're officially halfway through The Penguin, HBO's DC limited series which takes place one week after Matt Reeves' The Batman. I was definitely looking forward to watching this show, but it's blown my expectations out of the water. Not only is the storytelling great, but the performances from Colin Farrell as the titular character and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone are fantastic. The Penguin is already one of my favorite shows of 2024 and I know I'm not alone in that opinion.
The fourth episode, titled "Cent’anni," picks up during the final events of last week's episode, "Bliss," showing us how Oz managed to escape the Maronis and leave Sofia all alone. We get to see the events through Sofia's eyes and that continues with flashbacks to a decade prior when her father was alive, showing us how she ended up in Arkham to begin with.
Warning: Spoilers for The Penguin episode 4 are below.

Sadly, human beings are no strangers to bigotry and partisanship and over the years we have become inexplicably adept at evolving new and more extreme ways of directing our enmity. Our short but violent history on earth is rife with these spikes in unrest and Operation Clean-up (also known as Operation Blue Fox) in May of 1992 in Karachi, Pakistan which ravaged the city is vividly brought back into our consciences through filmmaker Ali Sohail Jaura’s Murder Tongue – stirring story of one nuclear family’s devastating loss and suffering during that unstable period. Jaura has managed to not only pinpoint the indiscriminate nature of the violence of this time and the pervading undercurrent of fear which rightly makes your blood run cold but also speaks to the wider contentious subject of identity politics which continues to divide us today.

Exclusive: Camila Mendes will no longer be starring in the Sony reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. We understand the Riverdale actress could not make the production dates work given her starring role in the upcoming mega Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films title Masters of the Universe in which she’ll play Teela.
As we previously reported, Mendes will headline Masters of the Universe opposite Nicholas Galitzine, who plays He-Man. Her character, Teela, is a warrior and the Captain of Eternia’s Royal Guard. She’s responsible for protecting the royal family, especially Prince Adam aka He-Man.
Deadline previously reported that Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King are set to star in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and that Sony was having talks with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles.

Riverdale star Camila Mendes has shared her reaction to being cast as Teela in the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie. Directed by Travis Knight, best known for directing Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee, Masters of the Universe is a reimaging of the popular 1980s toyline of the same name that spawned several animated shows, and a cult-favorite live-action movie in 1987. News of Mendes's casting as Teela broke earlier in the week, announcing that she will star alongside Nicholas Galitzine's He-Man.
Shortly after the casting news broke, Mendes took to her Instagram to share her excitement about joining Masters of the Universe. In the post that screenshots Deadline's film report, Mendes thanked director Travis Knight and Masters of the Universe toy company Mattel for believing in her. She is "excited to get yolked" and "can't believe this is real," with a final caption, "Let's go to Eternia!

A faux-elegant fable about how not to resolve your differences, made for dudes, by dudes, “The Duel” arrives at a time of intense division (and no small amount of scrutiny over gun use) in America. Releasing as a one-night-only screening via Iconic Events on July 31 before hitting streaming in August, the edgy comedy looks sharp enough, but lands like a rapier with a cork on it, as Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe play longtime besties who try to settle a dispute the old-timey way … by blowing each other away with pistols.
“The Duel” feels like a pretty clever idea at first, to the extent I found myself wondering why nobody had thought of it before, only to wind up asking why its two writer-directors didn’t think of it more. As it happens, my library contains no fewer than four books called “The Duel,” the shortest of which (by Joseph Conrad) runs a slender 112 pages,...

The Duel is a surprisingly thoughtful exploration of masculinity and friendship through a dark comedic lens. Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe shine in their roles, leading to a powerful and unexpected ending. The film skillfully switches tones and never becomes predictable, and Patrick Warburton is a delightful treat.
Best friends become bitter enemies and resort to drastic action after a series of unforgivable betrayals in The Duel. What begins as a dark comedy takes a dramatically thoughtful turn that explores difficult themes of justice, loyalty, and most importantly, perceived masculinity in settling conflict. Their decision to end a grudge the old-fashioned way, through "gentlemanly combat" instead of peaceful negotiation, is handled with surprising dexterity. The film builds intrigue with compelling performances from a quirky ensemble. Their reactions vary drastically as the characters hurtle towards a sobering conclusion.

"All of this is crazy." Lionsgate Movies has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy called The Duel, marking the feature directorial debut of two young filmmakers Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts. Given everything “Riverdale” threw at her and her castmates, Camila Mendes left her seven season, 137 episode run on the hit CW show having found her power.
“‘Riverdale’ was one of the most bizarre, fun landscapes to play with, and so the challenges were endless and I think there was never a dull day as an actor especially,” said the actress who played Veronica Lodge in the inventive Archie Comics adaptation. “There was a technical training that ‘Riverdale’ taught me that now I feel like I can do anything because we did it all on that show. There was no stone left unturned.”
Speaking to IndieWire over Zoom, Mendes clarifies that she had already shot the two Prime Video films she has been promoting this year, Outstanding TV Movie Emmy contenders “Upgraded” and “Música,” before the series came to an end, so she ended the series feeling “very happy that those...

Camila Mendes delivers a great performance in Upgraded, elevating the material. Upgraded is a cozy comfort watch for fans of traditional romantic comedies, with a strong supporting cast. While it hints at socially relevant topics, it never delivers on them, and the film can feel derivative at times and doesn't follow through on its potential.
Upgraded, not to be confused with Leigh Whannel's 2018 R-rated action movie Upgrade, is the latest entry from Prime Video as their major Valentine's Day weekend tie-in. Starting in 2021 with the release of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, the streamer has released yearly romance movies as a viewing option for couples over the romantic holiday that in the past likely would have been mid-budget theatrical releases. The treasure trove of young talent that emerged from The CW’s “Riverdale” is truly astonishing, and Camila Mendes is no exception. Her star power as both an actress in and executive producer of the immediately classic rom-com “Upgraded” takes the New York University alum to new heights.
While Mendes’ former “Riverdale” costars are flying high in their respective lanes, with Cole Sprouse stealing scenes even as a mute zombie in the Diablo Cody-penned “Lisa Frankenstein” to Charles Melton’s haunting, award-winning (yet Oscar-snubbed) performance in “May December,” Mendes has proven her own visionary chops in recent years. The star had a standout role in frothy high school dark comedy “Do Revenge” opposite Maya Hawke, and now holds her own alongside iconic actress Marisa Tomei in “Upgraded.”

It’s quite the feat to craft a satisfying, clever romantic comedy in this cynical day and age, given almost every meet-cute, situational shenanigan and grand gesture has already been put to celluloid. However, “Upgraded,” which initially appears to be a stereotypical rags-to-riches tale centered on a desperate gal’s life drastically improving after telling a white lie to a cute guy, keeps these expected elements fresh and vibrant. Director Carlson Young and screenwriters Christine Lenig, Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts ground sharp, soaring sentiments in a reachable reality, innovatively remixing the genre’s familiar formulas to create their own meaningful and rather endearing movie.

The “Riverdale” star, 28, seemingly confirmed her romance with “Música” co-star Rudy Mancuso, 30, in a “life update” Instagram post, as per Mendes’ caption.
Mancuso seems to appear in two images of the actress’ seven-photo carousel — one in which the fellow Brazilian actor is seen sitting on the floor playing with Mendes’ dog Truffle, and the other, a selfie of the supposed couple taken in the reflection of a glass door. In the selfie, the two wear bathing suits, as a pool is seen in the reflection, and share a sweet embrace while Mancuso gives his lady a kiss on the head.

Happy Death Day was a huge hit for Blumhouse when it arrived in October 2017, performing well financially and earning critical acclaim. In February 2019, Happy Death Day 2U arrived, and despite fans loving it, it failed to make much noise at the box office. Shortly after its release, then, we got the sad news that Happy Death Day 3 wasn’t being fast-tracked. However, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum isn’t giving up on the franchise just yet.
Blum has always been a big supporter of Hdd and in a new interview with Yahoo!, he’s once again confirmed that he’s trying to find a way to make a third film happen. In fact, this time he seems even more dedicated to the cause. When asked about the chances of HDD3, Blum revealed that he’s “working overtime” on it.
“Let me tell you, I’m working overtime on it. Believe me.
