George Foreman, the charismatic boxer turned infomercial star who had a retail hit with his Foreman Grill product line, died Friday. He was 76.
The Texas-born Foreman became Heavyweight Champion of the World, and segued into a TV staple and pop culture icon. He was swept up in the swirl of decade-defining events surrounding Muhammad Ali as well as Joe Frazier and other high-wattage pugilists of the 1970s. In the 1990s, Foreman took advantage of the availablity of low-cost TV time to launch his Foreman Grill home grill product through a series of infomercials that he hosted.
Foreman famously had a close call in the ring in 1977 that drove him to quit boxing and declare himself a born-again Christian. He became an ordained minister in 1978 and began preaching in his hometown of Houston. He shocked the sports world when he returned to boxing in 1987 and wound up reclaiming his Heavyweight Champion...

The boxing biopic Big George Foreman depicts the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” match between Foreman and fellow icon Muhammad Ali — and many wonder if George Foreman beat Ali in real life. The 2023 film covers Foreman’s (Khris Davis) entire life story, from his impoverished childhood to the near-death experience that inspired him to hang up the boxing gloves to the impending bankruptcy that forced him to get back in the ring and become the oldest-ever heavyweight champion.
The “Rumble in the Jungle” scene in Big George Foreman portrays Ali (Sullivan Jones) as the confident young athlete talking trash in Foreman’s ear during each round. While this angle captures the George Foreman vs Ali dynamic at that time — Foreman as the defending champion and Ali as the new blood rising through the ranks to steal his glory — it doesn’t present Ali in a flattering light. Foreman was expected...

Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.
Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.
Foreman’s life was quite a story.
We can’t say the same for the film.
Movie Review
Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.
Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.
It is well executed technically, it knows how to behave, but the script’s compassionate...

The month of April comes to a close with a second weekend in which no new movies opened with more than $10 million. Even so, one single movie has dominated the month so heartily that “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has now entered the top 20 all-time domestic blockbusters in less than one month playing in theaters.
Sure enough, the Nintendo game adaptation won its fourth weekend in a row with an estimated $40 million, down 33% from last weekend, after hitting $450 million as of Thursday. With the $490 million it has made through Sunday, “Super Mario Bros.” passes 2019’s “Frozen II” and 2016’s “Finding Dory” to become the 19th-highest grossing movie domestically with $500 million in its sights in the coming days.
“Super Mario Bros.” also became the first movie of 2023 to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide, adding another $68.3 million overseas, including $14.3 million in its Japan opening and $5.7 million in South Korea. With $1.02 billion grossed so far,...

It’s another weekend of box office domination for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which collected a towering $40 million in its fourth frame. Those ticket sales, down just 33% from the weekend prior, were easily enough to rule over the weekend’s newcomers, including literary adaptation “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” Finnish war drama “Sisu” and biopic “Big George Foreman.”
After four weeks on the big screen, “Mario” has grossed $490 million in North America and $532 million internationally to loom even larger as the highest-grossing film of 2023. It’s also the first movie of the year to cross $1 billion globally. Only five pandemic-era blockbusters have hit that milestone.
“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” fared the best among the new releases, opening in third place with $6.8 million from 3,343 North American theaters. Those are rocky ticket sales for the $30 million-budgeted coming-of-age story, which is based on Judy Blume’s seminal novel,...

Big George Foreman chronicles the highs and lows of George Foreman's (Khris Davis) incredible life both in and out of the ring, and his actual boxing career stats and records are as impressive as the man himself. The sports biopic traces Foreman's journey from being an impoverished child in Texas to a tumultuous young adult who, with help from the Job Corps, channels his feelings of inferiority into boxing, and eventually a shot at Olympic gold and the World Heavyweight Championship. A surprising loss sends him spiraling until he turns to family and faith to regain the internal fortitude necessary to reclaim the glory of his younger days.

Khris Davis stars as George Foreman in Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World. To compete with heavyweight champions like Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, boxers who were just as well known for their presence outside the ring as their fighting skills, George Foreman cultivated his own larger-than-life personality. It’s served him well for decades, from his boxing title pursuits of the 1970s to his entrepreneurial efforts of the ’90s and beyond. But that also posed a challenge for any actor who wanted to portray Foreman in the new biopic about his life, Big George Foreman. But Foreman, who serves as an executive producer on the film, says that Khris Davis’s performance is a knockout. Across a career that spanned four decades and saw him earn two heavyweight titles and a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, George Foreman cemented his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time. But despite having one of the most remarkable stories in sporting history to work with, Big George Foreman manages to stumble sluggishly from one chapter in his life to the next in a way that’s neither insightful nor entertaining.
George Tillman Jr.’s film plays out largely as a by-the-numbers biopic, charting Foreman’s rise from a troubled Texas youth to a title-winning boxer, then a born-again preacher, then a title-winning boxer again. Khris Davis, previously seen testing out his pugilistic skills on poor Donald Glover in Atlanta, plays Big George from the end of his teenage years to his remarkable comeback as the world’s oldest-ever heavyweight champion at the age of 45.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Sony’s upcoming film Big George Foreman is that George Foreman’s life hasn’t been brought to the big screen until now. A boxer, preacher, and community builder, Foreman has lived an exceptional life, made even more inspirational given the man’s beginnings. Foreman began as a troubled youth who found an outlet for his rage and hopelessness; that outlet brought him to the Olympics, made him a two-time world heavyweight champion boxer, and even granted him the distinction of being the oldest boxer ever to win the title.
One of the most influential figures in the life of young George Foreman was Charles “Doc” Broadus. Broadus was the man who introduced Foreman to boxing, and who ultimately became his mentor and his trainer. In Big George Foreman, Doc Broadus was brought to life by a strong Forest Whitaker performance. Whitaker's chemistry with...

The full title of the George Foreman biopic provides a not-so-subtle clue as to the film’s prosaicness. The movie about Jake Lamotta vividly signaled the personality of its lead character with Raging Bull. The one about Rocky Graziano jauntily indicated its upbeat nature with Somebody Up There Likes Me. So what does Foreman merit? Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World. It sounds like the title of a biography for young readers, and that’s pretty much how the by-the-numbers film plays.

There’s George Foreman the boxer and George Foreman the grill. The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. The life of a legend is coming to the big screen in Big George Foreman, a biopic exploring the life and times of its namesake. George Foreman is many things, but most famously is a two-time world heavyweight boxing champion, and the oldest person ever to win the belt — he was 45 years old for his second win. While Foreman’s life has been explored in interviews and documentaries, Big George Foreman aims to dramatize the man’s incredible story while keeping things as true-to-life as possible.
For his starring role as George Foreman, actor Khris Davis underwent an incredible physical transformation. Davis portrayed Foreman across decades of the man’s life, and as such had to not only get in boxing shape but put on weight to more accurately embody Foreman as the years went on. Davis had played a boxer in the past, but took on a whole new...

Few genres in Hollywood history have enjoyed as much staying power as the boxing movie — and it’s not hard to understand why. In addition to satisfying our primal urge to watch large men beat the tar out of each other, they come with a built-in dramatic structure that’s almost impossible to screw up. You set up a feud between two fighters, put the good guy through unimaginable amounts of adversity as he trains, then let it all culminate in a big match that serves as a metaphor for the protagonist’s internal conflict. No matter how admirable you found Barton Fink’s principled refusal to write wrestling movies, Jack Lipnick was on to something when he told him “there’s plenty of poetry right inside that ring.”
So it’s almost impressive that “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World” is so dull.

Biopics about star athletes or artists tend to have the same broad shape: the rise to achievement and fame, the fall from triumph (often fueled by some combination of addiction and ego), the restoration to a harder-won glory. A great biopic, like “Get on Up” or “I, Tonya,” will tease a profound portrait of the subject out of that form; a middling one will oversimplify the subject just to hit the right beats. But then there’s a film like “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.” That’s not a movie title — it’s the title of a parable. And it’s well chosen, since “Big George Foreman” is about a life that feels so outlandishly ready-made for the ups and downs, the lessons and inspirations, of the superstar biopic genre that you don’t even have to mess with it.

Flattering biopic zooms entertainingly through an extraordinary, switchback career
The extraordinary and long-gestating comeback story of heavyweight boxing champ George Foreman has taken a long time to tell, perhaps because he has lived his life in Muhammad Ali’s shade, especially since Ali’s sensational underdog victory over him in the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle. In movie terms, Leon Gast’s thrilling 1996 documentary When We Were Kings turned Foreman into the bad guy who deserved to lose – particularly the nasty macho detail about Foreman having a German shepherd on a lead when he turned up in Zaire for the fight.
That dog does not appear in this watchable, celebratory biopic from director and co-screenwriter George Tillman Jr, with Foreman credited as executive producer. Khris Davis plays Foreman; Forest Whitaker plays his trainer Doc Broadus and Sonja Sohn is his mother Nancy. The movie thumps through successive events of Foreman’s amazing life in efficient,...

So often thought of primarily as the big lug who was so dramatically dispatched by Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire in 1974, George Foreman is the main event in Big George Foreman. While there is plenty of boxing here to satisfy sports fans, the film is mild-mannered and genial to a fault as it charts the life of a dirt-poor Texas kid with a devastating punch whose public image transformed over the years from hulking bogeyman to that of a good-natured businessman and man of God.
Ali was such a commanding, entertaining and (mostly) adored worldwide figure, from his emergence as the self-anointed “greatest” to his ultimate status as one of the most beloved and admired men on the planet, that it isn’t easy to watch him take a back seat here to a younger but less charismatic figure onscreen. Big George Foreman is a gripping retelling of the life and times of two-time world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman. From his troubled childhood to his unbelievable return to boxing stardom in his 40s, George Foreman has lived a life ripe for exploration on the big screen. The film also sheds light on Foreman’s work as both a preacher and a community advocate; Foreman opened a youth center in Houston, Texas that is active to this day.
George Foreman himself served as an Executive Producer on Big George Foreman, helping to ensure the film’s accuracy and relevance. As Executive Producer, Foreman offered sage advice to Khris Davis, the actor playing him in the film, and collaborated with director George Tillman Jr. on his work as well. Ultimately, the fact that Foreman himself participated in Big George Foreman helps every punch and emotional blow in this biographical boxing movie land with even more weight.

Khris Davis stars as George Foreman in Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World. Big George Foreman is a big step forward for Khris Davis. It’s his first film as an above-the-line star, following supporting roles in films like Judas and the Black Messiah and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Davis, however, sees this starring role less as a win for himself and more of a win for the subject of the biopic, boxer George Foreman. The sports biopic Big George Foreman recounts the life of one of boxing's biggest personalities, but what is the real story behind the movie? The film follows George Foreman, played by Khris Davis, through his rise from poverty to the heights of the sports world in an underdog story that was seemingly crafted for cinema. Unlike many other biopics that struggle to find a narrative thread, the actual life of George Foreman was a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs that became one of the most well-known comeback stories in sports history, and George Foreman became just as well known out of the ring as in it.
Boxing has always been a sport that transitioned well onto the big screen, and the combat elements are the perfect metaphor for the day-to-day fights that audiences face in their daily lives. Foreman's incredible career was marked by multiple triumphs and tragedies, and...

Boxing movies tend to be pretty great fodder for a harrowing feel-good story. Even people who don't give a damn about boxing otherwise would be hard-pressed not to cheer by the end of "Rocky" or "Cinderella Man." Sure, there is the occasional dark boxing tale, such as "Raging Bull," that makes for equally -- if not more -- compelling cinema. Today though brings us what appears to be an underdog story, and a familiar one for many fans of the sport, as the trailer for "Big George Foreman" is here. Or, to be more specific regarding the title, "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World." And yes, they did put all of that on the poster.
In any case, this is the tale of George Foreman and, more specifically, his wildly unlikely comeback story as a boxer advanced in his years.
