Netflix's Canceled Shadow And Bone Spin-Οff Could Have Been Incredible
Image
This post contains spoilers for Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse.

Netflix has abruptly canceled many of its beloved original series over the years, despite fan outcry, but the most egregious instances of cancellation are stories that ended with intriguing cliffhangers, leaving the fate of these fictional worlds up in the air. One such instance is Netflix's "Shadow and Bone," whose season 2 finale concluded with Sun Summoner Alina (Jessie Mei Li) thwarting an assassination at great personal cost, hinting at a delicious moral dilemma to come. Sadly, we were robbed of a storyline in which Alina gets to navigate the root of her newfound shadow powers, which stand in stark contrast to her Sun Summoner abilities.

Despite its abrupt cancellation, "Shadow and Bone" had a more-than-decent two-season run, and it was able to flesh out the most complex aspects of Leigh Bardugo's novel series with self-assured panache. As expected from any YA...

“It’s Frustrating”: Jessie Mei Li Is Torn Over ‘Shadow and Bone’ Season 3's Cancellation & Future Potential
Image
Netflix's Shadow and Bone ran for two seasons on the streamer, and just as things were about to start heating up in the Grishaverse, Netflix decided to pull the plug. The show, which was based on the work ofLeigh Bardugo, was canceled, concealing the fate of all concerned to the pages of novels alone. Jessie Mei Li led the show, starring as Alina Starkov, with Mal (Archie Renaux), helping the protagonist develop a best friend-to-lover arc before the story ended in 2023. "It was just the most amazing time," Li said to The Hollywood Reporter concerning the show and its cancellation. "It’s obviously devastating that it was canceled, but also it felt like we ended it on a high. Sometimes these shows go on and on and on. We had two of the best years of my life. It was so good. And we’re all just super close still.

YA – or Young Adult – books are not only popular amongst teenagers. Over time, the genre has become a staple for readers of all ages, and it has inspired a variety of movies and television shows. The genre has long represented teenagers and the embarrassing, sometimes horrific, trials of young adulthood. For those who once wandered their school hallways without clear direction, these novels continue to offer an escape, or a way of being seen and relating to others across time and distance.

5 Canceled Fantasy TV Shows That Ended On A Cliffhanger
Image
Fantasy show cancelations are always disappointing for dedicated fans, but it's especially frustrating when series are cut short on the heels of cliffhangers. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence for streaming shows, especially within the fantasy genre. Numerous fantasy shows have been canceled before completing their original plans, and in some cases, this means major incidents remain unresolved. This can be seen with several of Netflix's recent projects, though it's not the only platform to have this problem.

Fantasy shows tend to have intricate plots, which makes it difficult to end a season on a conclusive note, unless it's the final outing. If there's more story to tell, projects attempt to build momentum ahead of another season. This makes things worse when they're unexpectedly canceled, as there are huge questions and storylines that never get addressed properly.

Every Jenna Ortega Horror Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Jenna Ortega has quickly become the slasher genre's it girl, but some of her horror movies are better than others. Beginning her career as a child actor on Disney Channel, Ortega initially received widespread recognition for her role as Young Jane in the CW series Jane the Virgin from 2014 to 2019. Ortega's big break into the mainstream consciousness came in 2019, however, when she starred as Joe's impressionable neighbor Ellie Alves in the Netflix thriller series You. Yet, her true star power came three years later, when she starred as the eponymous Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton's Wednesday.

2022 cemented Ortega's status as a scream queen. She became the new face of the horrifying Scream movies, and appeared in horror movies both large (Ti West's X) and small (Studio 666.) Since then, her horror roles have only gotten bigger and better. Ortega's most recent horror film was Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited and critically...

As A Shadow and Bone Fan, It Breaks My Heart To Say I Don't Want A Comic Book Continuation
Image
With so many canceled shows continuing in comic or graphic novel form, its safe to say Shadow and Bone is not exempt from the conversation. Shadow and Bone was canceled in November 2023, barely a week after Netflix released a connected game titled "Enter The Fold" during Geeked Week. And while a comic run would be a good way to see the show safely continued, it breaks my heart as a comic fan to say that a Shadow and Bone comic book continuation wouldnt workand its not what the show deserves.

Shadow and Bone was a fantasy TV show that premiered in 2021 and centered around the discovery of Sun Summoner Alina Starkov and her countrys political divide. Its second season arrived in 2023 after much anticipation. The adaptation combined the trilogy Shadow and Bone with the duology Six of Crows, both written by author and executive producer Leigh Barudgo.

Unfortunately, both Shadow and Bone...

New Stephen King Show Just Killed My Hopes For A Shadow & Bone Revival
Image
The cancellation of Shadow and Bone left fans disappointed with unresolved storylines. Actor Ben Barnes' commitment to The Institute makes a Shadow and Bone return uncertain, as the actor takes on a lead role in the Stephen King adaptation. Other Shadow and Bone stars like Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, and Daisy Head have also moved on to new projects, making a revival seem even less probable.

Stephen King's The Institute show kills any hope I had left for a Shadow and Bone revival. Shadow and Bone is a young adult fantasy show based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, and its popularity soared following its premiere in April 2021. Shadow and Bone gripped me from the beginning with a talented cast including Ben Barnes, Jessie Mei Li, and Archie Renaux. The show brought some of my favorite characters and relationships to life with a compelling narrative, making it a thrilling experience from start to finish.

What Is A Durast in Shadow and Bone? Jesper’s Grisha Powers Explained
Image
No one in the Shadow and Bone world is better at keeping secrets than Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter). His crackling tension with Inej? Unspoken. His heartbreaking past? Hidden. And, in the Season 2 premiere, we learn that he’s been sitting on one of Jesper’s (Kit Young) biggest secrets for a while.

Jesper is a Durast — and even he didn’t know his best bud Kaz had any idea.

The truth comes out in the first half of the episode, when Kaz and Jesper are handcuffed by the smiling pirate Sturmhond (Patrick Gibson). Rather than actually freeing Jesper himself, Kaz tosses his friend a metal coin. Eventually, Jesper turns the coin into a lockpick. Jesper is taken aback that Kaz knew about his Durast abilities, but not shocked. Kaz always knows everything.

The scene may have you asking, “What’s a Durast in the first place?” Especially since the Grisha...

Who Are The Six Of Crows? Every Member Of Kaz Brekker's Crew Explained
Image
Warning: This list contains spoilers for Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom novels.

The Shadow and Bone TV show never completed Six of Crows' storylines due to its cancellation. Essential members of Kaz's crew are introduced, but they are never all working together at once. The official six members of the "Six of Crows" are Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina, Matthias, and Wylan.

Netflix's canceled Shadow and Bone TV show never had the time to complete the story of Kaz Brekker's (Freddy Carter) crew, the title characters of Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows. Shadow and Bone loosely follows the plot of Bardugo's Shadow and Bone novel trilogy. She later wrote the spinoff Six of Crows, focusing on new characters in the same world. However, the Shadow and Bone TV show adaptation alters the timeline so some Six of Crows events happen alongside the Shadow and Bone plot.

Why Netflix Canceled Shadow And Bone After Season 2
Image
Shadow and Bone season 3 is not happening on Netflix. The show was canceled due to a re-evaluation of content strategy and the impact of strikes on the film industry. The cancelation was also influenced by the viewing numbers not justifying the production costs. The show's popularity was not enough to save it. The cancelation of Shadow and Bone raises concerns about the future of other Netflix adaptations. Shows may not be safe on the platform, and viewers may be less inclined to invest time in them.

Shadow and Bone fans finally have an answer regarding the fate of the show following the release of season 2. Eight months after the second season's premiere, Netflix announced that the show had ended. Unfortunately, the streaming service canceled the fantasy television series (along with four other original shows) on November 15, 2023, and reports surprisingly revealed a few of the exact reasons why Netflix decided not...

Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Three More Canceled at Netflix
Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone : La saga Grisha (2021)
When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes got underway earlier this year, many Netflix shows were left with fates up in the air.

Now that the strikes are over and Hollywood is getting back to normal, the series won't be making the cut for additional seasons are being revealed.

Deadline revealed Wednesday that Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall will not be returning.

Shadow & Bone is the highest profile of the five shows, having made it to a second season.

Despite the freshman season garnering considerable buzz, Shadow & Bone Season 2 launched earlier this year to little fanfare.

Based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone Season 2 follows Alina Starkov, who is now on the run.

The series stars Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik...

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Image
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.

The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.

While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

Hanks' appearance in Band of Brothers is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment among the crowd of Red Devils, highlighting his commitment to the project. Hanks and Steven Spielberg collaborated on the Band of Brothers companion series The Pacific and are working on the upcoming miniseries Masters of the Air, showing their enduring interest in World War II stories.

In fact, that's exactly what Mr. Smith, played by The Sarah Jane Adventures star Alexander Armstrong, says after scanning the area -- "I do not know where the Doctor is. The Doctor is missing.

Shadow And Bone Season 3: Is It Happening? Everything We Know
Image
Shadow And Bone is a hugely popular fantasy series on Netflix that aired for two seasons between 2021 and 2023, with many audiences wondering whether the show will be returning for a third installment. The series is based on the novels of the same name by author Leigh Bardugo, which follow the story of a young soldier, Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) who uses her magical powers to unite the world against sinister forces beyond their control. It’s been praised for its extensive world-building and complex plotlines, which are dragged directly from Bardugo’s novels and adapted for the screen.

Though some Shadow and Bone book details are missing from the show, the writers do try their best to stay accurate to the novels - and this story certainly wasn’t finished by the end of season 2. The show ended on a pretty dramatic cliffhanger with Alina losing her powers and gaining some darker ones,...

But in the current era of streaming services, a surplus of shows, and an evaporating pile of cash, has created an overwhelming wave of cancellations completely at odds with shows’ viewership, popularity, or quality. For the average viewer, this might just mean pressing play on something new. But online, small but tight-knit fandoms have taken it upon themselves to face down streaming giants over their beloved shows.

Kaz's Shadow And Bone Backstory Is Actually So, So Much Worse
Image
When Netflix’s Shadow and Bone finally revealed Kaz Brekker’s history, there were several Six Of Crows book details that would have made his backstory even worse than the show implied. At only nine years old, before Kaz ever became Dirtyhands, he and his brother Jordie were caught in a scam run by Pekka Rollins, posing as a harmless merchant. Shortly after losing their money, the brothers fell victim to a plague, and Jordie never recovered. Unfortunately for Pekka Rollins, Kaz survived the ordeal and soon put the pieces of the scam together. From that moment on, Kaz became obsessed with destroying Rollins’ entire empire.

Kaz is known for his ever-present leather gloves and mercilessness, but it turns out that those characteristics are actually connected. Kaz doesn’t only lose his brother in the plague, but is literally sent adrift in the harbor along with the bodies of the...

'Shadow & Bone': Could a 'Six of Crows' Spinoff Fix What Season 2 Did Wrong?
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Shadow and Bone Season 2 as well as major spoilers for the Six of Crow duology.Shadow and Bone's choice to adapt author Leigh Bardugo's original Grishaverse trilogy while simultaneously including characters from the trilogy's first spin-off, Six of Crows, was always going to be tricky. For one, the events of Shadow and Bone take place years before the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom duology, and the main characters never meet. Including the Crows in Season 1 meant inventing new storylines and a plausible reason for their collision course with Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li). Many praised the integration, however, and highlighted the Crows — Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), and Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) — as the Netflix series' strongest element by far.

‘Shadow and Bone’ Star Kit Young Compares Jesper Being a [Spoiler] to ‘Private Coming Out Party’
Image
“Shadow and Bone” sharpshooter Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) keeps his guns close, but he keeps his past and true identity even closer.

In “Shadow and Bone” Season 2, Jesper and the Crows are back in action, set mostly against the plot of “Siege and Storm” and “Ruin and Rising” by author Leigh Bardugo. Jesper remains the talkative one who has a flare for theatrics and the dramatic, but it turns out that he still has parts of him left to be revealed.

“Jesper’s quite unique in the Grishaverse in that he’s kind of the only secret Grisha,” Young told TheWrap. “Everybody’s on some level, if not out and proud, then it’s known, it’s something that is known about people and so to be hiding that about yourself, as it says quite a lot, I think, in this world.”

Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone : La saga Grisha (2021)
“Shadow and Bone” Season 2 expands an already complex universe by taking on more source material from Leigh Bardugo’s books, unfurling the fictional fantasy map to explore countries in the Grishaverse and four completely new characters. And in an exclusive new behind-the-scenes featurette, costume designer Wendy Partridge explains how the season’s costumes helped tell the story.

Ben Barnes, Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux and the original Crows Freddy Carter, Kit Young and Amita Suman return alongside brand new characters. Both new and returning characters continue to shed layers of identity as the story develops, and these characters’ costumes reflected subtle shifts in their roles as well for Season 2.

As for where the show is headed, some of the characters’ costumes hint at that as well. Costume Designer Wendy Partridge kicked off the season by coordinating colors between Alina and Mal as they became more open about their affection for each other.

1 Missing Book Detail Would've Greatly Changed Kaz's Shadow & Bone S2 Arc
Image
Season 2 of Shadow and Bone revealed many details about Kaz Brekker’s horrifying past, but there's one missing detail from the books that would have made his arc in the Netflix series even more ominous. Shadow and Bone adapts the stories from Leigh Bardugo’s trilogy of the same name, as well as Six Of Crows, a potential Netflix spinoff, which introduces Kaz (Freddy Carter) and his gang, the Crows. The Netflix series combines the stories into one narrative, meaning several details of the stories and characters had to be hurried through, including Kaz’s gangster moniker “Dirtyhands.”

Though Kaz is only seventeen in the books, he’s carefully cultivated a dreadful reputation that inspires fear in everyone in the New York-underbelly-inspired Barrel. This reputation for being willing to commit any sin, no matter how horrifying, became so pervasive that Kaz earned the nickname Dirtyhands. When Kaz has his final...

‘Shadow and Bone’ Creators Explain That Season 2 Ending and Tease Season 3: ‘We Were Devious’
Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone : La saga Grisha (2021)
“Shadow and Bone” Season 2 expands an already complex universe by taking on more source material from Leigh Bardugo’s books, countries in the Grishaverse and four completely new characters.

Ben Barnes’ General Kirigan returns as the central antagonist, a looming presence not always onscreen but more psychologically. Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) and Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux) also drive the plot in their search for two more magical creatures to amplify Alina’s powers so that she can tear down the fold once and for all. The two Keramzin orphans ultimately accomplish these goals, but not without some unexpected sacrifices and revelations.

The second and third amplifier creatures — the Sea Whip and the Firebird — come from the books, as does the plot twist that Mal is actually the Firebird because he has Morozova’s bloodline. Showrunner Eric Heisserer credited Bardugo’s books for the road map that he and co-showrunner...

With many more characters introduced, more widespread travel involved, and more myths explored, the new episodes couldn't resist making the world even more immersive than before. The show explores the legends of the fantasy world through Morozova and his creatures, but he isn't the only ancient saint to impact the story.
