Ricardo J. Varona is an award-winning Puerto Rican writer and director based in New York City.
His films have screened and won awards at Academy Award, Goya Award, and BAFTA Qualifying Festivals, and have been featured by the curation teams at Vimeo Staff Picks and Short of the Week. His MFA thesis film, Primos, received the "Best U.S. Student Short" award at the 2024 Palm Springs International ShortFest.
Varona holds an MFA in Film Directing from Columbia University, where he had the honor of being a named a Milos Forman Directing Fellow. Deeply connected to his Puerto Rican roots, he has shot several short films on the island, exploring intimate portraits of complex family dynamics, transgressive sexual experiences, and coming-of-age narratives.
