Rhenzy Feliz's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows
Image
Rhenzy Feliz has come into the national spotlight thanks to his fantastic co-starring performance in The Penguin, but the actor has been a part of plenty of notable TV shows and movies before 2024, putting in impressive acting showcases each time he appears. Born on October 26, 1997, Feliz was just 26 when he appeared in The Penguin premiere. That wasn't even close to Feliz's first acting job though, and the Brooklyn, NY native got his start back in 2016, with a recurring role on the Hulu comedy series, Casual, in season 2.

Work never let up for Feliz, and aside from a few years in the early 2020s, the Covid-19 years, as they were, he's been constantly performing in either TV or movies. His innocence and charm makes for a good mix that allows him to inhabit sweet, kind characters, who are also stronger than they may appear at first glance. The Penguin is how most wider audiences know him,...

‘Julia’ Season 2 Finale: Was the French Chef Really an FBI Informant, and Will There Be a Season 3?
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “Julia,” now streaming on Max.

“Julia” might put a strong focus on the food, but it’s a show that also has a lot more on its mind. The Max comedy series takes on a wide range of 1960s-era social issues, including feminism, homosexuality, civil rights and the anti-war movement.

“Julia” wraps up its second season Thursday with an eventful finale that includes filming an ambitious crustacean segment — in the “Lobster a l’Americaine” episode. After cooking and hitting farmer’s markets in the south of France with her friend and co-author Simone Beck (Isabella Rossellini), the Childs — played by Sarah Lancashire and David Hyde Pierce — spend time in Paris, then return to Boston where they must confront — and foil — an FBI investigation into Wgbh’s “subversive” activities, with help from station employees like producer Alice (Brittany Bradford).

Julia: Book Editor Judith Jones Deserves a Spin-Off
Image
Max’s Julia Child biodrama is blessed with a deep bench of winning characters played by incredible actors. Aside from Julia (Sarah Lancashire) and her husband Paul (David Hyde-Pierce), there's Julia's best pal Avis (Bebe Neuwirth), the public-television producer who helped shepherd her show to the air (Brittany Bradford as Alice), her original French Chef director Russ (Fran Kranz), her new director Elaine (Rachel Bloom); the list goes on. But a special place at the table should be set for Julia's Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), the book editor at the Knopf publishing house and the French Chef’s first great champion. She's a character so dynamic, self-possessed, and charismatic, that there seems only one thing left for her to do: leave Julia for a spin-off of her own.

Inside ‘Julia’ Season 2 with Chris Keyser and Daniel Goldfarb
Image
Season one of Max’s Julia introduced Sarah Lancashire as Julia Child, the iconic chef and author who taught American television audiences the art of cooking with The French Chef. The first season delved into Child’s personal and professional life while charting her ascension to TV star. Season two picks up the larger-than-life television personality in France, where she and her loving husband, Paul (David Hyde Pierce), are visiting Simca (Isabella Rossellini) and working on a new cookbook.

Series creator, writer, and executive producer Daniel Goldfarb revealed that they intended to go to France in season one, but that never transpired. Once the series was renewed for season two, there was never a question the story would include a trip to the South of France.

“We got Isabella Rossellini to play Simca Beck, Julia’s writing partner, and then just because of Covid and everything, it became too complicated.

‘Julia’ season 2 trailer: Julia Child charms France and the White House [Watch]
Image
“Lucy, we’re home!,” jokes Julia Child upon her return to the Wgbh studios from her sojourn in the South of France in the trailer for the second season of “Julia,” the Max comedy series. Watch the full trailer above.

The new footage teases Child’s (Sarah Lancashire) trip to France with her husband Paul (David Hyde Pierce) as she collaborates with her French cookbook co-writer Simone Beck (Isabella Rossellini). After testing recipes – and after a surprise outing to Paris with Paul – she returns to a booming television program and is confronted by the executives’ idea of introducing “product placement” to her latest episodes. 2023 Drama League Awards winners: Annaleigh Ashford (‘Sweeney Todd’) takes Distinguished Performance
Image
Winners of the 2023 Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 19, 2023, at an in-person ceremony, hosted by Emmy-winning reporter Frank Dilella at The Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2022-2023 theater season.

“Leopoldstadt” asserted itself as the dominant play of the season, picking up the Best Play prize. Tom Stoppard’s drama has been perched atop Gold Derby’s Tony Awards odds since we launched the prediction center. With Tony favorite “Kimberly Akimbo” out of the running for Best Musical (the Drama League already considered that tuner for its Off-Broadway run), “Some Like it Hot” cruised to a win in that category. It prevailed over four of its fellow Tony nominees: “& Juliet,” “New York, New York,” and “Shucked.”

The Drama League bolstered the Tony prospects of “A Doll’s House” by bestowing it with the Best Revival of a Play prize. But the...

Outer Critics Circle nominations: ‘New York, New York’ leads with 12, ‘Leopoldstadt’ has 6
Image
The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.

“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.

This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

‘The Same Storm’ Review: A Starry Assembly Sheds Warm Light on the Pandemic’s Darkest Moments
Image
In “The Same Storm,” it’s a welcome surprise to see Elaine May appear as one of the faces in writer-director Peter Hedges’ impressively diverse and starry ensemble, who take turns contributing scenes about the challenges of life during lockdown. May portrays spiky Ruth Lipsman Berg, who hops on a teleconference with a new doctor and her home health aide. Daphne Rubin-Vega is Lupe, her concerned caregiver. Raza Jaffrey is the gentle but quite-clear physician trying to ascertain if Ruth has contracted the coronavirus.

Ruth was in the scene right before this one — talking with her daughter, a webcam girl — so we’re aware she’s gotten dolled up for the doctor’s call. Like a good Jewish mother, she asked the doc if he’s single. If so, she has a daughter. Forget that in the prior scene, her call to said daughter (Mary-Louise Parker) was less than kind.
