“James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.”

RuPaul Pays Tribute To ‘Drag Race UK’ Winner The Vivienne
Image
RuPaul has paid tribute to The Vivienne, the UK’s first Drag Race winner whose death was announced yesterday.

RuPaul posted on Instagram this LA morning: “With a broken heart, I join the entire Drag Race universe in mourning the loss of The Vivienne—an incredibly talented queen and a lovely human being.”

The Drag Race presenter’s post drew comments from ex-Drag Race UK stars including Baga Chipz and Danny Beard, the latter of whom said “you meant the world to her!”

The Vivienne’s death aged 32 was announced yesterday by their publicist Simon Jones, who said “these are the words I never ever wanted to write.” No further details were made available and the family of The Vivienne, whose real name was James Lee Williams, asked for privacy.

The Vivienne rose to prominence in the UK drag scene in 2015 after being appointed UK Drag Ambassador for RuPaul’s Drag Race,...

How ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ Cleared The Path For BBC Comedy ‘Smoggie Queens’
Image
Exclusive: Creatives behind BBC comedy Smoggie Queens have credited RuPaul’s Drag Race UK with clearing the path for more shows about queer communities across the nation.

Phil Dunning, who created and stars in the Hat Trick-produced show alongside the likes of Peaky Blinders star Charlotte Riley and Mark Benton, said a decade ago the series about drag queens in the north east of England may have struggled to get a greenlight.

Now into its sixth season, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK launched in 2019 and has consistently been one of BBC Three’s top-rated shows, catapulting the careers of the likes of The Vivienne and Baga Chipz and carving out space in the national conversation about drag. The majority of its contestants come from outside of London.

“Drag Race has done amazing things for the queer community,” Dunning told Deadline. “It’s shone such a spotlight on drag and made us think...

Pointless: Meet 2023’s New Hosts Replacing Richard Osman
Image
It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.

When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

Drag Race: Best International Snatch Game Performance
Image
Some of the best Snatch Game performances have come from the international spin-offs of RuPaul's Drag Race. Snatch Game is the one challenge where the queens are required to impersonate celebrities. The number of matches the queens makes with the judges has no effect on their score for the challenge; it is focused on being funny over being correct. The challenge is one fans look forward to every season, as it often yields the funniest or cringiest moments. There have been many versions of Snatch Game across the franchise, but all have the same overall structure of the queens answering questions in character.

While the American version of Rpdr has some of the best Snatch Game performances, the international spin-offs have shown that queens worldwide can make fans cry from laughter. With viewers from the United States watching the international queens compete, they have the added challenge of making themselves...

Prince Andrew: The Musical is tasteless and should never have been made
Image
On paper, it was never going to work. Yesterday, Channel 4 aired Prince Andrew: The Musical, an original 50-minute musical based on the life of Queen Elizabeth’s third child. Prince Andrew tunefully reenacts the highlights of the royal’s Wikipedia page – his military service, his youth as a media darling, his marriage to and divorce from Sarah Ferguson, and his cushy diplomatic role under Blair’s government. It also touches on the later scandals surrounding his relationship with convicted paedophile and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, and a civil lawsuit alleging that he sexually assaulted a woman, Virginia Giuffre, when she was 17 years old.

Written by and starring Kieran Hodgson, the programme has predictably kicked up a stink among viewers. Naturally, many royalists have taken issue with the tongue-in-cheek lampooning of the disgraced Duke of York. But even for those who detest Prince Andrew, there’s no getting around the fundamental tastelessness of its premise.

Munya Chawawa as Prince Charles is an irresistible piece of casting
Image
When a drag queen called Baga Chipz is selected to play Margaret Thatcher in a TV show, and that’s not even the most delicious bit of casting, you know you’re onto a winner. In Channel 4’s Prince Andrew: The Musical, Prince Charles, will be played by none other than Munya Chawawa – the British-Zimbabwean comedian who has made a career, in part, out of mocking the royal family’s colonial connections.

Earlier this year, the comic shared a skit on Instagram in which he plays the gilded trio of Prince William, Prince Andrew and Prince Charles, all reminiscing fondly on colonial times. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because we colonised it,” his Prince Charles says at one point, giving a spot of fatherly advice to his son.

In another video, he skewers Prince William and Kate Middleton over their controversial trip to Jamaica in March.

‘Prince Andrew: The Musical’ TV Special Sets Cast Including Harry Enfield, Munya Chawawa
Image
As if Prince Andrew wasn’t already disgraced enough, a musical TV special is set to satirize the embattled British royal still further.

Featuring Harry Enfield, one of Britain’s best-known impressionists, “Prince Andrew: The Musical” will focus “on the key events, relationships and controversies of Andrew’s life, including a reimagining of the former-hrh’s bombshell interview with Emily Maitlis,” according to the logline.

Andrew’s disastrous 2019 interview with then “Newsnight” anchor Maitlis was widely mocked and condemned and proved to be the catalyst in Andrew’s banishment from public life.

The musical was written by Kieran Hodgson, who will also play Andrew.

“Kevin & Perry Go Large” star Enfield has been cast as former Prime Minister Tony Blair while Emily Maitlis will be played by “Starstruck’s” Emma Sidi.

Joining them are Munya Chawawa (“Taskmaster”) as Prince Charles, Jenny Bede (“Catastrophe”) as Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson (nicknamed Fergie...

‘Prince Andrew: The Musical’: Emma Sidi Lands Emily Maitlis Role In Musical Comedy About Controversial Royal
Image
Emma Sidi has landed the role of broadcaster and MacTaggart Lecture giver Emily Maitlis in Channel 4’s upcoming satire Prince Andrew: The Musical.

Maitlis’ bombshell BBC interview on Newsnight with Prince Andrew, in which the royal denied a friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and made several eyebrow-raising statements, led to cascade of events that saw him step back from royal duty.

Maitlis has since left the BBC and was credited for delivering a barnstorming MacTaggart at this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival. The musical special will feature a reimagining of her interview with Prince Andrew, with emerging British comedy star Sidi playing the journalist.

Kieran Hodgson (Two Doors Down), who has written the show to a musical score along with Freddie Tapner, plays the royal and will focus on events, relationships and controversies in his life.

Further central cast announced today are Munya Chawawa as Prince Charles and Jenny Bede as Prince Andrew’s former wife Sarah Ferguson.

Also cast are Joe Wilkinson as a newspaper vendor; Harry Enfield (Harry Enfield and Friends) as Prime Minister Tony Blair and Baga Chipz (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK) as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Hat Trick Productions is making Prince Andrew: The Musical, with Adam Reeve producing and Stu Mather and Jimmy Mulville the executive producers. Hodgson is an associate producer.

The program was first unveiled in August at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

With the two most formidable queens freshly ejected from the competition, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. the World is now basically a crapshoot, with all five of the remaining contestants sharing an equal shot at the crown. (Yes, even Jujubee, assuming she decides to start putting in a little effort.)

And unlike Pangina, Blu is actually honest about her choice: “She took the same decision that I took with Jimbo. She sent home her strongest competition.” (See how easy that was?) Baga Chipz,...

RuPaul's Drag Race UK Vs. the World: Will the Real Jujubee Please Show Up?

Drag Race fans, we need to talk about Jujubee.

So here’s my question, which I ask with respect: Why isn’t she bringing even a flicker of that competitive flame to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. the World?

The nine queens all competed to become the first ever “queen of the mother-tucking world” and have the opportunity to record a duet with Ru herself.

Below check out our recap of the series premiere to (re-)meet all of the queens and find out which one makes the best first impression on the judges in “Global Glamazons.” “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Versus The World” airs every Tuesday at 4pm...

RuPaul's Drag Race UK Vs. the World: Jimbo Steals the Show in Week 1
Image
Just when you thought Willow Pill’s Enya-themed bubble bath was the weirdest thing Drag Race would give us in 2022, along came Tuesday’s premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Vs. the World to make us hold its beer while it pelted us with deli meat. (But more on that later.)

The franchise’s long-awaited first international edition kicked off in spectacular fashion, with three of Drag Race UK‘s finest taking the stage to represent the United Queendom. Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea and Cheryl Hole — all standouts from Season 1 — were buzzing with excitement as they prepared for their Ru-match,...

BBC Three Is Back: Channel Boss Fiona Campbell Says Return To Linear Will “Add Another Layer Of Audience”; Talks ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Vs The World’ & ‘Conversations With Friends’
Image
Exclusive: “Bringing BBC Three back to linear TV” would have been far down former BBC Director General Tony Hall’s list of predictions for his successor’s first major piece of business.

In 2014, having only just become Dg, Hall took the first forward-thinking decision of his own rein by making BBC Three a solely online channel, knocking a hefty £50M ($67.4M) from its budget (the money was diverted to drama) and acting ahead of the curve of the viewing habits of BBC Three’s younger target market, who were showing a greater propensity to watch programing on streaming platforms at a time of their choosing.

Fast-forward six years and Hall’s successor, Tim Davie, dramatically U-turned, giving the greenlight to a plan that had been in the works for several months and announcing that BBC Three was to return to traditional TV sets. Just as crucially, the channel would be given its £50M back.

How VH1’s ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Makeup Artist David ‘Raven’ Petruschin Makes RuPaul’s Look Werk

When asked the best way to address 2020 Emmy winner David “Raven” Petruschin regarding gender and/or personal pronouns, you most definitely get a response fit for a Queen. “You can say David Aka Raven, or Raven Also Known as David. You can call me a c–t if you like!,” exudes the wonderfully blunt individual responsible for the ever-evolving visage of RuPaul Charles. And if last year’s Emmy win wasn’t enough, Raven is back for more as nominee again this year in the Outstanding Makeup in a Multi-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic) category. But it’s been a long road since the drag performer first appeared in the second season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” where she was runner-up.

“The lighting is so different, it’s just leaps and bounds,” says Raven, who has since become a creative producer and...

David Bowie Origin Story ‘Stardust’ to Open Hybrid Raindance
Image
“I Am Slave” director Gabriel Range’s “Stardust,” that chronicles the young David Bowie’s first visit to the U.S. in 1971, a trip that inspired the invention of his iconic alter ego Ziggy Stardust, will open the 28th Raindance Film Festival.

Like several other festivals this year, Raindance will be a hybrid version comprised of a strong online presence with some physical events and screenings. The festival’s 50-strong film program will be available online across the U.K. while live events will be confined to London. The films will be free, though financial contributions will be encouraged, 28% of which will be donated to charitable causes.

Range will participate in a physical red carpet event for “Stardust” in London, and in-person activity will also include an out-of-competition gala screening of Akabane Hiroshi’s Japanese film “Twiceborn,” with both events taking place at London’s The May Fair hotel.

After Cheryl’s elimination, the top three were in high spirits as finalists together, acknowledging that the three of them were the best of the competition. For Divina,...
