Santastein actually came out last year and, despite a plot that sounds like Weird Science meets Christmas Bloody Christmas, totally escaped my notice until now when I saw it while scrolling through Tubi and decided to give it a watch.

As the film begins, we learn a pair of troubling pieces of information. First, we find out that bodies have been vanishing from the Lincoln County Morgue, then we learn that it’s been years since Santa has delivered any presents, in fact the Jolly Old Elf seems to have vanished. There is, of course, a connection between the two stories. As a child, Max Causey. As a child, his attempts to prove Santa exists accidentally rendered him extinct and buried in the backyard.

Past spooky season horror fans are always looking for ways to keep that spirit going into the final two months of the year. Can you believe that Christmas is less than a week away? Five new horror movies come down the chimney this week in celebration, including the at-home debut of a recent box office hit.

Based on his fake trailer from the Grindhouse Double Feature (2007), Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving hit theaters last month, and it was surprise-released on PVOD at home yesterday.

You can rent the film for $19.99 or purchase it (digitally) for $24.99.

In Thanksgiving, “After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday.”

The cast for the feature length slasher movie includes Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Jalen Thomas Brooks (“Walker”), Milo Manheim (Zombies), Nell Verlaque (“Big Shot”), Gina Gershon (“Chucky”), Tim Dillon and Rick Hoffman (Hostel).

Roth wrote the script with Jeff Rendell.

When they decide to bring back the body of a man dressed like Santa Claus, Max feels it is his chance to right the wrongs of his past; having accidentally killed Father Christmas when he was six.

Max Causey (Jared Korotkin) would probably be on the Naughty List if he hadn’t accidentally killed the man who writes it one fateful Christmas Eve when he was just six years old. Flash forward 12 years and Max still feels guilty about his trap that sent Santa to an early grave along with the world’s Christmas spirit. But although Max buried Santa’s body all those years ago, he kept Saint Nick’s brain fresh in a jar, and thanks to a groundbreaking electrocution experiment he’s been working on with his brilliant friend, Paige Byers (Ophelia Rivera), as well as the body parts he’s been stealing from the local morgue, Max sees an opportunity to finally bury his own guilt and bring Santa back from the dead. The only problem? Once resurrected, this new version of Santa, aka “Santastein,” has something much worse than coal in store...

A Killer Santa is a holiday horror staple, and upcoming slasher comedy Santastein aims to take it to another level by adding a Frankenstein-like twist and setting the mayhem in the non-wintry state of Florida. And its set to make its debut at this year’s Popcorn Frights Film Festival.

The Popcorn Frights Film Festival is back this year, both in-person and virtually, from August 10-20 in Fort Lauderdale, South Beach and virtually nationwide. The festival is leaping off the screen in full stereoscopic 3-D glory for its ninth edition, and they’ve unleashed a first wave of programming that includes new premieres and repertory celebrations.

Highlights include the World Premiere of Deliver Us on Opening Night; seven feature film World Premieres including Brandon Christensen’s The Puppetman; a special spotlight of made-in-Florida films featuring World Premieres of Big Easy Queens, Santastein, and a live original score performance for Herschell Gordon Lewis’ splatter masterpiece Blood Feast for its 60th anniversary; a “1983-d” celebration of 3-D films; and a focus on the “Australian Invasion” of bold new genre films coming from down under headlined by the World Premieres of Psychosis and Puzzle Box.

Coming soon from Imaginex Movies is the holiday horror movie Santastein, which doesn’t yet have a release date. The trailer, however, has come down the chimney in time for Christmas.

Santastein, which was funded on Kickstarter back in 2020, has been described by the filmmakers as a Christmas slasher comedy, inspired by films including Evil Dead 2 and Scream.
