For my time and money, Varun Tej is one of the interesting young contemporary Telugu actors with a rapidly growing repertoire of impressive roles. In his last outing, Operation Valentine, he was every inch the sinewy soldier.

Writer-director Karuna Kumar, who after Palasa 1978 again travels back in time, takes Varun back into the 1970 and 80s to recreate the life and crimes of Matka king Vasu based on the real-life character Ratan Khetri who bamboozled his way into Indian politics with his illicit gambling.

I haven’t seen what the original looks like. But Varun Tej (definitely the more talented of the two lead-playing Varuns in Indian cinema) knocks the socks off his character, literally catching the character by the collar and bullying his way into the Matka king’s inner life.

The year 2024 has offered us 8 Hindi films in the theaters, and now March 2024 is ready with as many as 12 Hindi releases in the theater. However, are these 12 films a hope for a March 2024 box office boom? Certainly not. However, the month definitely has a mixed bag with some unpredictable and dicey moves.

The only thing that might be certain is that March 2024 will perform better than March 2023 at the box office. Last year, the films released in the third month earned a total of 260.59 crores, and this month, the 12 films in total are targetting somewhere around the same number, but only in one condition – if word of mouth acts like a charm for some films.

Going by the trailer released earlier today, Operation Valentine is a boxoffice winner even before the film releases on March 1. The trailer is intense and engaging, somewhat like the aerial battles that define the Top Gun genre. Except that this time, Varun Tej’s Rudra doesn’t seem to be faking it.

What took Siddharth Anand’s Fighter down was all that posturing… Oh God, the look-we-are-saving-the-country posturing. In Operation Valentine, Varun Tej and the rest of the cast don’t waste their time, and ours in trying to impress us with their patriotic zeal.

Everything and everyone look far more professional, far more equipped for the job of protecting our country, than their blasé counterparts in Fighter.
