‘Allegiance’ Creator Anar Ali Signs With Atlas

The creator of CBC and NBCUniversal’s Allegiance has signed with Atlas Literary and Atlas Artists in the U.S. Anar Ali is behind the hit show that is currently nominated for eight Canadian Screen Awards, including a writing nod for Ali and for Best Dramatic Series. Now into its third season after picking up a CBC renewal last week, Allegiance is a character-driven police procedural set in Surrey, British Columbia, which centers around identity and belonging, policing and politics and justice. Ali has also written a number of books and worked on shows like CTV’s Transplant. Exclusive: Canada’s CBC has renewed five series, including new procedural hit Saint-Pierre, with entertainment chief Sally Catto vowing the pubcaster would “continue to showcase homegrown storytelling.”

Saint-Pierre will return for a second season after becoming CBC’s most-watched new series of the year, according to Numeris TV Meter and CBC’s own analysis, and will be joined by two more seasons of Wild Cards and new runs for Allegiance, Heartland and Murdoch Mysteries.

The news comes as CBC/Radio-Canada gears up for a boost to its budget following the victory of Mark Carney’s Liberals in Tuesday’s federal election. On the campaign trail, Carney had pledged C$150M ($109M) to strengthen local news output and promote both English- and French-language media on the public broadcaster, and the industry will be hoping he makes good on that.

Samer Salem (The Expanse) has joined the series regular cast of CBC’s procedural Allegiance for Season 2, currently in production in British Columbia through December 5. New episodes are set to premiere this winter.

From series creator series Anar Ali, Allegiance focuses on identity and belonging, policing and politics, and finding truth within the heart of a flawed justice system. Allegiance is now in production in Vancouver and British Columbia’s lower mainland, with Stephen Lobo (Continuum), Adolyn H. Dar (Superman & Lois), Brian Markinson (A Million Little Things) and David Cubitt (Virgin River) also starring.

Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern are the showrunners and Canadian firm Lark Productions is producing in association with Universal Studios Group subsidiary Universal International Studios, with NBCUniversal Global Distribution handling global sales. Anar Ali is the series creator.

The series is described as focusing on “identity and belonging, policing and politics and finding truth within the heart of the flawed justice system.”
