10 Movies From The Last Decade That Had Low Expectations & Turned Out Amazing
Image
2024's top movies in Hollywood are mostly sequels, but a significant number of franchise movies made less at the box office in 2024 than their previous counterparts. The tug-of-war between expectation and reality defines the film industry, especially its business side. For viewers, the ability of a film to live up to its hype is often the biggest determining factor in the experience of watching it. Disappointing films thus become major points of contention because even something passable like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace receives unbridled hate if it's hyped up too much before viewing.

Despite the continuing trend of Hollywood releasing sequels and the general lack of creativity found in big blockbusters nowadays, 2024's summer box office had a rebound. The pleasantly surprising good releases that lived up to expectations and even surpassed them managed to salvage a win for theaters. In fact, over the past 10 years, in an ocean of disappointing movies,...

Every Jenna Ortega Horror Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Jenna Ortega has quickly become the slasher genre's it girl, but some of her horror movies are better than others. Beginning her career as a child actor on Disney Channel, Ortega initially received widespread recognition for her role as Young Jane in the CW series Jane the Virgin from 2014 to 2019. Ortega's big break into the mainstream consciousness came in 2019, however, when she starred as Joe's impressionable neighbor Ellie Alves in the Netflix thriller series You. Yet, her true star power came three years later, when she starred as the eponymous Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton's Wednesday.

2022 cemented Ortega's status as a scream queen. She became the new face of the horrifying Scream movies, and appeared in horror movies both large (Ti West's X) and small (Studio 666.) Since then, her horror roles have only gotten bigger and better. Ortega's most recent horror film was Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited and critically...

How To Watch The Transformers Movies & Shows In Order
Image
The Transformers universe is a highly successful media franchise, with a cumulative box office of $5.286 billion and a total running time of 1,002 minutes. The order in which to watch the movies and shows can be confusing due to the jumping around in continuity. Watching them chronologically will provide a better understanding of the overarching story. The franchise includes multiple movies, short films, and a web show, with more projects on the way.

The Transformers universe began in 2007 with Michael Bay's Transformers, and since then, it has turned into a multi-billion dollar franchise that contains multiple movies (with more on the way), a couple of short films, and one web show. As of the writing of this article, the film series has accumulated $5.286 billion at the box office and has a running time of 1,002 minutes (aka 16 hours and 42 minutes) over the course of the universe's seven movies, so that is...

‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ Director Steven Caple Jr. on Michael Bay’s Support, ’90s Rap Soundtrack and Reuniting with ‘Creed’ Directors
Image
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. isn’t afraid to pick up the phone and ask for guidance. He did it on Creed II when he asked Ryan Coogler and Sylvester Stallone for insight into how best to make a movie in the world of Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and Rocky Balboa. So, naturally, Caple took the same approach with the mastermind of Transformers live-action movies, Michael Bay.

During prep, Caple reached out to Bay who made the time for the young director despite having his hands full with Ambulance.

“[Michael Bay] was making Ambulance at the time, but he still picked up the phone and hopped onto Zoom,” Caple tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Monday through Friday, I was prepping for the film, and Saturday, Sunday, I was learning a lot from the visual effects supervisor and calls with Michael Bay. He gave hints and tips on how to accomplish certain things,...

Lightstorm Museum Is A Treasure Trove Of James Cameron Movie Props
Image
As Mrs. Fableman recently said, "Movies are dreams that you never forget." There's more truth to that statement than not — even the most grounded, photo-realistic movie has that more-real-than-real quality to it, an intangibility that separates the "dream" from the "dreamer" in the audience.

Perhaps that's why visiting a museum full of memorabilia from cinema history feels so special. It takes those celluloid dreams and makes them feel that much more real, proving that those images and moments were indeed created and constructed by a team of talented artists.

The museum soundstage at Lightstorm Entertainment is just such a place, filled as it is with screen-used props and setpieces from filmmaker James Cameron's impressive cinema history. It helps that Cameron's background in engineering and various other facets of technology lends that much more realistic weight to these items: even up close, they look as if they're fully legitimate,...

What’s New on DVD/Blu-ray in August: ‘Crimes of the Future,’ ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot,’ ‘Pam & Tommy’ and More
David Cronenberg
New Release Wall

David Cronenberg plays the hits in “Crimes of the Future” (Neon), but there’s no other filmmaker today with hits like his. Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux are a pair of surgery-based performance artists whose interests intersect with a sect of plastic-eaters, while bureaucrats Kristen Stewart (giving the screen’s most divisive performance since Jared Leto in “House of Gucci”) and Don McKellar look on in fannish amazement. If you enjoy the auteur’s brand of surgical implements that look like insect exoskeletons and furniture that looks like tumors, this is your kind of movie.

Bella Ortiz's Role in "American Carnage" Confronts White Latinx Privilege
Image
"I had a little bit of hesitation when approached with the role of Micah," Bella Ortiz tells Popsugar about her casting in the new comedy-horror "American Carnage." The film sort of feels like a Latinx version of Jordan Peele's "Get Out," and Ortiz's character has one of the more surprising arcs. She had auditioned for another role but decided to go for the part of Micah despite her misgivings. She went for it, noting, "these kinds of movies, they don't get made often, especially independent features." And in the end, she was proud to be part of a majority-Latinx team with lots of camaraderie. Everyone who worked on the film was "committed to being a part of telling this story and highlighting the important issues that were happening."

"As a kid, I felt like I was neither here nor there."

‘American Carnage’ Review
Image
Stars: Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Yumarie Morales, Brett Cullen, Jenna Ortega, Jorge Diaz, Bella Ortiz, Allen Maldonado, Eric Dane, Troy James | Written by Diego Hallivis, Julio Hallivis | Directed by Diego Hallivis

Opening with a voiceover and montage of political speeches and news broadcasts on the topic of immigration, American Carnage immediately introduces us to Jp and his sister Lily. She’s just been accepted into college, but what should be a happy family celebration is interrupted as an Ice Swat team kicks in the door.

And here we run into a major issue with American Carnage’s plotting. The raid is one of many called for under an executive order signed by Governor Haper Finn. Immigration policy and enforcement is a federal matter, an executive order by a state governor would have no force. And even if it did, Ice is a federal agency, it doesn’t take orders from state governments.

‘Night Teeth’: Netflix’s New Vampire Film That Doesn’t Suck
Image
Photo: ‘Night Teeth’ ‘Night Teeth’- New Take on Old Trope If one thing is clear, there will always be an audience for anything vampires. From the 1930s film ‘Dracula’ to one of the biggest franchises ‘The Twilight Saga’, vampires have taken a bite in the film industry and are not letting go. Netflix has gifted us with a vampire original of their own, ‘Night Teeth’. While still holding on to the old rules that vampires can’t be in sunlight and a dagger to the heart is fatal, this film offers a new take on this repeated subject. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. portrays a young college student, Benny, who moonlights as a chauffeur for the night. When he picks up his clientele, it’s immediately not what he expected his night to be like. Debby Ryan and Lucy Fry are Blaire and Zoe; they have a list of parties to...

‘Night Teeth’ Review: A Vampire Thriller That’s Too Cut-and-Paste to Have Any Bite
Image
The vampire genre is a lot like a vampire: It has lived for hundreds of years, and every time you think it’s about to die off it gets an infusion of new blood. Since the logistics of neck-biting and blood-sucking are no longer incendiary, a vampire movie, novel, or TV series that strikes a chord will tend to be infused with a tasty metaphor, one that reaches beyond the “erotic” obvious. In the mid-’70s, when the genre had come to seem musty, Stephen King’s “‘Salem’s Lot” (1975) and Anne Rice’s “Interview with the Vampire” (1976) revived it by plugging the gothic tropes of old horror movies into the eccentric nooks and crannies of the contemporary world. “The Lost Boys” converted vampirism into ’80s youth-movie hipsterism, “True Blood” tapped the progressive side of vampires, and the “Twilight” books and blockbuster movies made the vampire into an expression of alienated teen-romantic outsider-ness.

Caitlin Kinnunen, Bella Ortiz to Lead CW Nun Dramedy Pilot
Image
Caitlin Kinnunen and Bella Ortiz have signed on for the lead roles in the untitled nun dramedy pilot at The CW, Variety has learned.

The pilot centers on two millennial nuns: one a true believer and the other a new arrival who hasn’t taken her final vows. The two strangers become sisters on a spiritual – and spirited – journey to understand their own faith and their place in the Catholic Church.

Kinnunen will star as Sister Frances, described as the complacent angel on your shoulder. An impressionable, people-pleasing, young nun who believes in the power of thoughts and prayers and never breaks the rules, until she meets Sr. Maggie.

Ortiz will play Sister Maggie, described as the daredevil on your shoulder. A radical, millennial nun hell-bent on shaking up the power structures of the Catholic Church while being of service to her Brooklyn neighborhood. She can’t help but get into trouble,...

Boogie – Review
Image
Though film fans may not acknowledge it, several other entertainment venues have had a tough time getting by in the past year. Just a few miles from the shuttered multiplex there were the empty stadiums and sports arenas. Now many more theatres are starting to open their doors once more (hey Big Apple and Tinsel Town), and the prospect of watching live baseball in a few weeks has many fans ecstatic. But there’s another sport just finishing up, allowing a few fans in, and adding another pandemic phrase for the “new normal”. That would be the basketball “bubble” that’s had a bumpy history. This new release is set in the before days, with a high schooler “baller” dreaming of the “big show”. But his parents are also counting on his “dream”. That and the pressure of representing his unique cultural community weigh heavily on the shoulders of the teen “hoop sensation” nicknamed Boogie.

Focus Features Releases ‘Boogie’ From Eddie Huang; ‘My Salinger Year’ And ‘Boss Level’ Debut – Specialty Preview
Image
Even though it’s moving at a slower pace than many would like, the vaccine rollout is starting to gain some traction and in turn, moviegoers are going to start setting foot in theaters — safely of course. That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely.

Eddie Huang, who is best known for writing the best-selling Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir which was the inspiration for the popular ABC sitcom, makes his feature directorial debut with Boogie which Focus Features releases in theaters today.

The story follows Alfred Chin (Taylor Takahashi) who goes by the name “Boogie”. He is a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York and dreams of one day playing in the NBA. However, his parents have other plans for him.

‘Boogie’: Eddie Huang’s Sports-Underdog Movie Scores as Culture-Clash Story
Image
Eddie Huang’s Boogie is a basketball movie, but one of its best moments comes courtesy of tennis. Boogie, né Alfred Chin (Taylor Takahashi) comes back to his home in Flushing, Queens, to find his Taiwanese immigrant father (Perry Yung) rewatching, for apparently the gazillionth time, the 1989 French Open match between Taiwanese-American upstart Michael Chang and the heavily favored world No. 1, Ivan Lendl. Chang won that match, which happened the day after the Tiananmen Square massacre, and went on to win the tournament. When Dad repeats his fervent assertion that...

Boogie Review: Generic Sports Drama Bogs Down Compelling Human Interest Story in Eddie Huang’s Debut
As writer/director Eddie Huang’s fortune teller states, when a dragon and a dog come together, they create a snake. That’s what Alfred ‘Boogie’ Chin (Taylor Takahashi) is: temperamental like his father (Perry Yung), culturally respectful like his mother (Pamelyn Chee), and intuitive enough to realize he’s been trapped between them without a voice of his own. Both parents see him as the answer to their financial woes, but Mr. Chin plays the long game while Mrs. Chin seeks a quick payday. Neither negates Boogie’s own dream of playing in the NBA, but they do alter the journey by causing psychologically crippling strife. Because the more they grab hold of his present to pull him towards their potential futures, the more it all starts feeling pointlessly self-destructive to him.

That’s where the intrigue lies within Huang’s debut feature Boogie (the restauranteur pivoting to film...

Bliss Review: Mind-Bending Sci-Fi Romance Tackles Deeper Themes
Image
Science fiction romance Bliss tackles heady themes through a reality warping scope. Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek play strange lovers in a world that may or may not exist. Their mind-bending relationship twists and turns around a central mystery. Are they real people in an elaborate illusion? Or just facades of a troubled existence struggling to cope with difficult truths? The answer becomes obvious rather early, but the protagonist's journey to understanding is a worthwhile endeavor.

Owen Wilson stars as Greg Wittle. He sits in his drab office while the sea of cubicles outside buzzes with ringing phones. Greg draws pictures on his desk of an alluring woman and scenic seaside home. He ignores calls from his coworker and boss, but does pick up for his daughter. Emily (Nesta Cooper) would like him to attend her graduation. He's not sure if his ex-wife or son, Arthur (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.), wants him there.
