Petra Collins was a teenager when she first picked up a 35 mm camera, not knowing much about the device or the industry that revolves around it. According to the 29-year-old native of Toronto, Canada, she “never learned the basics,” leaving her to explore the medium as her own teacher — a journey that has now blossomed into a celebrated editorial and commercial career (she’s shot for Gucci, Adidas, Vogue, The New York Times, Cr Fashion Book and many more) and made her known for a defining photography style of the 2010s.

Former HBO Exec Len Amato Joins MasterClass as Chief Content Officer

Len Amato, a 13-year veteran of HBO, joined MasterClass as chief content officer at the company that sells subscriptions to celebrity-led online courses.

In the new role, Amato will head up MasterClass’ content organization and help lead content innovation, strategy and development of class launches. He reports to David Rogier, founder and CEO of MasterClass.

Amato formerly served as president of HBO Films, Miniseries and Cinemax before he departed in late 2020. Most recently, Amato was an executive producer on HBO’s upcoming limited series “The White House Plumbers” through his production company Crash&Salvage, where he will continue to produce independently.

MasterClass provides access to more than 150 online courses led by experts and celebs including James Cameron, Shonda Rhimes, Ken Burns, Jodie Foster, Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Nas, Gordon Ramsay, Bob Iger, Metallica, Issa Rae, RuPaul, and Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. MasterClass, the star-studded online education subscription service, has hired a new CFO.

Valen Tong, who formerly served as the chief business officer for Beauty For All Industries (Bfa), will oversee the finance organization at MasterClass and help to scale long-term growth. She will report to MasterClass founder and CEO David Rogier.

Tong isn’t a stranger to the digital video space. Bfa is the parent company of beauty subscription brands like Ipsy (founded by YouTube pioneer Michelle Phan) and BoxyCharm, which frequently sponsors influencers). Bfa is also the parent of Madeby Collective, an incubator that launched Addison Rae’s beauty brand, Item Beauty.

Disney Plus’ CFO And President Of Programming Have Left The Streaming Service

The wildly successful streamer Disney Plus has lost two top executives -- CFO Vanna Krantz and Ricky Strauss (pictured above), who most recently served as president of programming and content curation.

At Disney, Krantz served as CFO for Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, and Disney's streaming technology subsidiary BAMTech Media -- and has departed to join MasterClass in the same CFO role, Variety report. She will become the the celebrity-studded virtual learning platform’s first CFO, succeeding VP of finance Alex Ip, who departed MasterClass in October.

“Vanna has scaled some of the largest streaming platforms quickly and strategically,” MasterClass founder and CEO David Rogier told Variety in statement. “She’s a world-class leader who will help push us into our next stage of growth, providing even greater access to learning from the world’s best.”

Bob Iger Recalls Pitching Steve Jobs With the ‘Crazy Idea’ for Disney to Buy Pixar in New MasterClass (Exclusive Video)
Disney CEO Bob Iger has spent a lot of time lately looking back on his 14-year stint leading one of the world’s preeminent media and entertainment companies. On Thursday, MasterClass announced that Iger will teach a course on business strategy and leadership he’s learned.

In an exclusive clip from the class, Iger revisits a conversation he and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had that led to one of Disney’s most salient acquisitions: Pixar.

“I called Steve Jobs late one afternoon in late September, early October of 2005. I said, ‘Steve, I’ve got a crazy idea for you’… Steve loved crazy ideas,” Iger recalled.

Disney chairman-ceo Bob Iger has signed on to the MasterClass digital education service, offering a course in business strategy and leadership.

The course, available as of Thursday, will detail Iger’s view on the importance of taking bold steps and embracing mistakes in business. Iger also promises to dig into “case studies” of some of Disney’s big acquisitions of his tenure.
