Let’s go back to 1997. Titanic was sailing into box office history, Batman had nipples, and the internet was still something you had to yell at your mom to get off the phone to use. Kids like me were burning out their family’s VHS players with tapes of The Lost World, Liar Liar and Space Jam. It was a glorious stew of blockbusters, pop music, and dial-up tones. But nestled among the chaos was a movie so perfectly outrageous, so gleefully violent, and so misunderstood that it didn’t just fly over audiences’ heads—it practically dive-bombed them like a fleet of Arachnid kamikazes. That movie was Starship Troopers, baby. For kids who grew up in the late 90s, this was our RoboCop. Funny enough—it’s by the same exact madman director, Paul Verhoeven. If you were lucky enough to see this film on HBO or even in...

When Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" was released in 1997, people were baffled. It's about a futuristic society where humanity battles "bugs" -- an alien race from a far-off planet. It's about the thrill of signing on to the military, and then it's about the absolute horror of war. "Starship Troopers" is a vicious satire, meant to make visible the way that blind patriotism, propaganda-induced xenophobia, and unchecked military power lead to fascism and genocide.
Critics and audiences rejected the film, missing that the movie does not support the fervor with which its characters celebrate the destruction of an alien race. "I was using [Leni] Riefenstahl to point out, or so I thought, that these heroes and heroines were straight out of Nazi propaganda," Verhoeven later told The Guardian. "No one saw it at the time ... I thought Neil Patrick Harris arriving on the set in an SS uniform might clear it up.

Sony’s surprise CES announcement in January left the Helldivers community picking their jaws off the floor. The gaming giant confirmed what many had speculated: Super Earth’s finest would be making the jump from consoles to the silver screen.
But what exactly do we know about the Helldivers 2 movie adaptation? Between official statements, developer insights, and community speculation, the picture remains frustratingly incomplete.
Like a Helldiver waiting for extraction in squid territory, fans are left scanning the horizon for any sign of what’s to come.
The announcement that launched a thousand hellpods
The news broke during Sony’s CES 2025 presentation when PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash casually dropped what might be the most anticipated gaming adaptation since The Last of Us:

Harmony Korine's 2013 film "Spring Breakers" is a time capsule of the early 2010s -- a time when James Franco was still a big-name movie star and Skrillex's brostep bass wobbles soundtracked all of the cool parties in town. Starring Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, the film follows four college students who turn to a life of crime after meeting Alien (Franco), a drug dealer who convinces them to wear pink balaclavas, carry machine guns, and dance to Britney Spears power ballads.
Considering that Harmony Korine was banned from "The David Letterman Show" for causing mischief, it makes sense that he'd create a movie about renegades wreaking havoc. That said, "Spring Breakers" also taps into the universal feeling of being young, carefree, and wanting the party to last forever -- themes most of us can relate to, even if we didn't grow up listening to...

When Arrowhead’s co-op shooter exploded onto the scene last year, gamers immediately recognized its spiritual connection to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 cult classic. The gray-and-black armor, the rounded helmets, the endless waves of insectoid enemies—the visual parallels between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers are undeniable.
But Super Earth’s war against the Terminids runs deeper than mere aesthetic homage. The connections between these two franchises extend far beyond power armor and bug guts, reaching into the realm of biting social commentary that both properties execute with gleeful abandon.
More than just bugs and guns: the shared DNA of managed democracy
The most fascinating parallel between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers isn’t the combat—it’s the mockery of ultra-nationalism that permeates both worlds.
While Verhoeven’s film was initially misunderstood as endorsing fascism, time revealed its brilliant satire of militaristic propaganda. Helldivers 2 cranks this satire to eleven, with its “Managed Democracy” and comically over-the-top patriotism.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the 1997 cult classic “Starship Troopers” is a sci-fi action thriller film that follows the journey of three friends: Johnny, Carmen, and Carl. The issue lies not in the visual presentation but rather in the execution of the film. Understandably, in 1997, depicting an extravagant battle between extraterrestrial species and humanity was challenging. However, there was room for improvement in designing more memorable fight sequences. With a limited scope for the cast to work with, the film falls short of becoming a captivating science fiction epic. However, “Starship Troopers” serves as a satire on propaganda and critiques the glorified military action and humankind’s fascistic tendencies.
Spoilers Ahead.

Even almost 30 years after it bombed in theaters and especially because it became a cult classic shortly after, Starship Troopers remains one of the most beloved sci-fi and/or war films ever made. To no one's surprise, producers have been trying and failing to either reboot or remake it ever since. After years of being stuck in limbo, the new Starship Troopers finally gained some life when it was announced that District 9 writer/director Neill Blomkamp would helm the remake.
As of this writing, Blomkamp hasn't specified what he plans to do for the remake. All that is known is that it will most likely be a faithful adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name rather than a remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1997 film. Assuming this is the case, then the remake may be dead on arrival. Contrary to what contemporary fans demand of today's film adaptations,...

“Starship Troopers” are back. And they’ve found the man to lead them into battle.
Neill Blomkamp has been hired by Columbia Pictures to write and direct a new version of the story, this time going back to the original story by Robert A. Heinlein, which was originally published as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction before being collected and released as a novel in 1959.
The story follows Johnny Rico and his band of roughnecks, who go into battle against an army of intelligent insects but plot specifics are being kept under wraps. Blomkamp is writing the script and producing alongside Terri Tatchell.
“Starship Troopers” had been adapted once before, in 1997, by “RoboCop” director Paul Verhoeven and writer Edward Neumeier for TriStar Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. That version leaned into the political satire, full of fascistic imagery and jingoistic propagandizing. That hard R-rated film starred Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico,...

Rumors of a new Starship Troopers movie have been doing the rounds for a couple of years, and we finally have confirmation that a new take on the classic sci-fi actioner is moving forward at Sony/Colombia Pictures.
As first reported by Mttsh, District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is set to write and direct the project, and will also produce alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote District 9 and 2015's Chappie with the director.
According to THR, this will not be a remake or reboot of Paul Verhoeven's 1997 movie, but a more direct adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's controversial 1959 novel.
The book focused on the rise of military man Johnny Rico during an interstellar war between Earth's army and legions of giant insect-like aliens known as Bugs. In addition to sci-fi space battles, the story was concerned with highlighting life in a military society, introducing ideas...

Big news for sci-fi lovers! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is bringing back ‘Starship Troopers,’ and they’ve tapped Neill Blomkamp to write and direct it. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, and I’m already curious about what he’ll do with it.

Johnny Rico is coming back to kill some more bugs.
Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, setting District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein.
Blomkamp will also produce the feature alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote the South African filmmaker’s District 9 and 2015 outing, Chappie.
Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.
While the book won a Hugo Award for best novel and has been quite influential in sci-fi literature, some quarters described the book as fascist.

"Power Rangers" was not just one of the biggest cultural phenomena of the 1990s, but it was also part of a wave of shows that made Japanese pop culture huge in the U.S. together with "Pokémon," "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z." The show, created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy in collaboration with Shotaro Ishinomori, was mostly composed of reused footage from Ishinomori's hugely influential and long-running tokusatsu series "Super Sentai." The series revolves around a team of youths trained to morph into superheroes known as Rangers, who fight evildoers and occasionally pilot giant mecha called Zords (which can combine to form even bigger mecha). As /Film decided in our previous reassessment, "Power Rangers" is good, actually, even setting our nostalgia aside.

Starship Troopers (1997), directed by Paul Verhoeven, is a sci-fi movie about Earth fighting a war against giant alien bugs. The film uses extreme violence and nudity to satirize military propaganda, fascism, and nationalism.
Although it received mixed reviews when it first came out, it has since become a cult classic and is seen as a sharp commentary on war and society.
The cast includes Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico, a star athlete turned soldier, Dina Meyer as Dizzy Flores, Rico’s fellow infantryman, Denise Richards as Carmen, Jake Busey as Ace Levy, Neil Patrick Harris as Carl Jenkins, Clancy Brown as Sergeant Zim, and Michael Ironside as Jean Rasczak, a teacher-turned-squad leader.
Denise Richards played Carmen, an aspiring starship pilot and Johnny Rico’s girlfriend in Starship Troopers. Despite the movie’s focus on gender equality, Richards was asked to do a topless scene, which she quickly turned down.

Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi action cult classic Starship Troopers is now streaming for free on Pluto TV. The iconic film, based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name, debuted exactly twenty-seven years ago.
Written by Edward Neumeier and set in the 23rd century, Starship Troopers follows teenager Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and his comrades as they serve in the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth-based world government engaged in an interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids. Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside also star in the movie. Starship Troopers' development started in 1991 as Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Neumeier. After noticing story similarities with Heinlein's novel, producer Jon Davison suggested converting the script into a version of Starship Troopers to garner greater interest from studio executives.

After a long year in Early Access, Starship Troopers: Extermination is finally gearing up for its 1.0 release later this year. Developed by Offworld Industries, the studio behind the famous 2020 multiplayer title Squad, this well-received co-op Fps game serves as the latest video game adaptation.
There’s no doubt that the game is one of the most anticipated releases of the year, but it does face significant competition from a similar bug-stomping co-op shooter that debuted earlier this year, Helldivers 2. However, with the latest single-layer mode trailer, the Offworld game has managed to one-up Helldivers 2, which should set off alarms for Arrowhead.

Some of the Starship Troopers original cast reunites after 27 years under the shadow of a familiar foe. The 1997 film developed a cult following after its anti-fascist satire was initially misunderstood by critics. Despite a reboot having been in the works since 2011, no significant news has surfaced in years.
It has been 27 years since Starship Troopers was first released, but the original cast has reunited under the shadow of a familiar foe. Based on the 1959 sci-fi novel of the same name, 1997s Starship Troopers largely failed to resonate with critics at the time of its original release, with many misinterpreting the movies anti-fascist satire. Attention, troopers, for the long wait is nearly over. After over a year of waiting, Starship Troopers Extermination, the Fps sci-fi shooter, will soon leave early access and have its official launch.
The game is a return to the beloved universe of Starship Troopers, which audiences have loyally followed for decades. Fans have been bubbling with excitement over the recent announcement, and a beloved figure of the franchise knows just what to do to ramp up the hype.
Johnny Rico’s Rise in the Starship Trooper Franchise
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Johnny Rico is a name that carries a lot of weight. He’s the protagonist of the original Starship Troopers film and has since become an iconic figure in the sci-fi genre.
Casper Van Dien brought him to life in the 1997 movie, and since then, Rico’s journey from a young soldier to a seasoned leader has been a delight to witness.

Guilty pleasure movies are often misunderstood gems that deserve more appreciation and respect. Starship Troopers, Batman Forever, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull are underrated classics. John Carter, Cars 2, and The Lone Ranger offer unique stories and themes that challenge the conventions of their genres.
The term "guilty pleasure" is often used to describe a movie that someone can only enjoy in secret, for fear of what the wider public thinks of the movie. Often, this means that a guilty pleasure movie is one that is typically looked down upon. However, I would argue that guilty pleasure is a term that is thrown around far too often when discussing unloved movies. But what if these guilty pleasures aren't actually guilty? What if they're just actually good movies?
From the vastness of space to the dust of the Wild West, some of these so-called "guilty pleasures" are actually truly great movies.

The trailer showcases the terrifying Tanker Bug in action, while the Developer Diary gives us an inside look at General Rico (played once again by Casper Van Dien) and his Special Operations Group (S.O.G.).
In the Dev Diary, key members of the Starship Troopers: Extermination development team share more information about the new features coming with the game’s launch onto consoles and PC on October 11th. Every 90s kid will tell you there were several action films they never grew bored of watching; anything with Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, or Arnold Schwarzenegger in, and then Starship Troopers. The film was a huge pop culture hit, spawning a franchise still going today, and with multiple movies, animated films, comics, books, and of course video games.
Casper Van Dien was the hero of the story, playing Johnny Rico, a plucky private with a point to prove, before rising (and falling) through the ranks to end up where he is now, leading the upcoming console release of Starship Troopers: Extermination, as part of the single-player campaign not only contained within the same universe of the films but continuing on our favorite 90s sci-fi hero’s story.

Paul Verhoeven's 1997 film "Starship Troopers," based on the novel by Robert A. Heinlein, takes place in the 23rd century when Earth is embroiled in a bloody, violent, generations-long war with giant intelligent insects from a distant planet. Earth has devolved into a perpetual war machine. The film follows a new generation of sexy young recruits whose entire lives — their school and their media — are all constructed specifically to sell them on the positive qualities of war and their inevitable duty to become soldiers in the conflict. The characters are all bright and attractive and swallow the propaganda without a wisp of awareness. Verhoeven's film is a broad, acidic satire about the nature of propaganda and a warning against Orwellian notions of perpetual conflict.

Offworld Industries has recently launched the release trailer for Starship Troopers: Extermination at the recently concluded Summer Game Fest. Set to be launched on October 11, this game is really going to be a dealbreaker.
Now, the problem lies for another co-op title, Helldivers 2 from Arrowhead Games Studios, as the upcoming title is going to be a direct competitor of it. Both games are based on a similar intergalactic sci-fi shooting environment. However, there is one aspect of that Offworld title that is going to be the game changer, which the Arrowhead title doesn’t even have.
Corpses of Bugs Will Pile Up in Starship Troopers: Extermination
Starship Troopers: Extermination will have a feature called “persistent bug bodies.”
Extermination, the co-op bug buster, has a unique feature that we have never seen in any other games so far. The game will soon leave the early access phase and go for a full 1.0 release in October.

The influence of Paul Verhoeven’s cult classic Starship Troopers is undeniable in 2024’s live-service darling Helldivers 2. Both share a darkly humorous exploration of humanity’s struggle against giant insectoid foes, wrapped in a package of over-the-top patriotism and biting social commentary.
This thematic connection hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans, to say the least, and a potential crossover has been encouraged by both Arrowhead and Starship Trooper actors. While there’s nothing to go by officially, one fan-made video is the perfect crossover between the two.

Helldivers 2 has been out for about three months and in that time, we have seen plenty of new and interesting content, from mission types, weapons, and stratagems.
The community achieved a major milestone when they defeated the Automaton army and had their hopes swiftly dashed a few days later when they returned. Helldivers 2 is still going strong and has daily player counts in the hundreds of thousands and the speculations of crossovers are all around.
We’re Yet to See Confirmation of Franchise Crossovers
Crossovers in Helldivers 2 would make the game a much more strong contender for Goty.
There is one thing though that we have not yet seen added to the game that would surely boost the popularity of the game even further, franchise crossovers. In an interview with Cgm, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt was asked about the possibility of guest characters from the game’s major inspirations making appearances.

"Starship Troopers" was not a big hit when it arrived in 1997, and many audiences didn't know what to make of the darkly satirical tone created by "RoboCop" filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. In the years since its release, however, Verhoeven's violent, funny, action-packed sci-fi flick has been re-evaluated and become both a cult classic and a movie that some people still don't understand.
Adapted from Robert A. Heinlein's novel, "Starship Troopers" follows a group of youngsters who get swept up in being soldiers when alien bugs attack Earth. Of course, the war ends up being hell, and many of these fresh young faces are cut down in increasingly nasty ways. And then, just in case all of the satire went over your head, Verhoeven ends things by having Neil Patrick Harris show up dressed in a Nazi uniform.

Casper Van Dien is eager for a crossover between Starship Troopers and Helldivers 2, sparking fan excitement and potential collaboration. Both Starship Troopers and Helldivers 2 explore heavy themes of propaganda, fascism, and the military-industrial complex. The potential crossover between the two franchises could bring iconic weapons and enemies into Helldivers 2 for an engaging experience.
While Helldivers 2 continues to dominate the video game industry, one Starship Troopers star is eager for a crossover with the game his film inspired. It doesn't take a lot to recognize that Arrowhead Studios' game and Paul Verhoeven's cult-classic sci-fi have a great deal in the company especially given that both act as satirical comments on the modern military-industrial complex and the influence of propaganda on society. Despite these heavy themes, there's still a great amount of fun to be had in either given that they also spotlight soldiers firing big weapons at giant alien bugs.

“You get me?” barks Career Drill Sergeant Zim (Clancy Brown). The young, beautiful, and vapid recruits giving him their full attention answer in kind: “Sir yes sir!” Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and his fellow roughnecks might get Zim, but most people do not. Since its first theatrical run through today, viewers misread, misunderstand, and, frankly, misattribute Starship Troopers time and again, failing to see the cutting satire at work.
The most recent example comes from author Isaac Young, who took to Twitter to critique the film’s approach to satire. Young argued that director Paul Verhoeven failed to make fun of the Terran Federation because the attractive heroes, clean cities, and technologically advanced schools look nicer than the ugly bugs they fight.
Why the first Starship Troopers movie failed as a parody, a thread:
Watching the movie, it was clear the director was aiming for a campy, over-the-top depiction of the Terran Federation.

Watching the movie, it was clear the director was aiming for a campy, over-the-top depiction of the Terran Federation.

Look, I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. We all know that Starship Troopers (watch it Here) isn’t a horror movie. It’s a science fiction intergalactic comedy with a light tone and Neil Patrick Harris- but it’s also a well-made and tightly performed 90s creature feature that is sure to tickle the nostalgia bone for many JoBlo Horror fans. And with Paul Verhoeven being fresh on the mind from our Robocop episode, we thought it would only make sense to follow it up with another Verhoeven classic that showcases how far the director had come in the 10 years between these two films. If you’re still not convinced, this film also delivers on terrifying creatures, plenty of blood and guts, and even some boobies for you slasher trope seekers out there. While being more comedy/action than anything- Starship Troopers is a film that...

Unlikable movie heroes offer a different perspective on traditional protagonists, allowing for nuanced storytelling and character development. Some heroes, like Willy Wonka and Jim Levenstein, commit morally flawed actions that make them impossible to like. Despite their flaws, some unlikable heroes are crucial in conveying deeper themes.
Movie heroes that are impossible to like can give audiences a different perspective on what a traditional protagonist can be. Whether they're morally flawed or just obnoxious, unlikable movie heroes allow directors to tell more nuanced stories and explore character development in an atypical light. While many of these protagonists often have redeeming qualities as well, there are just as many that are completely unlikable because of their actions and personal philosophies.
Even when they're played by some of the greatest actors in Hollywood, certain revelations can make any hero impossible to like. A...

Anime has always been a home for adaptations, with many of the earliest anime shows and movies adapting popular manga, folk tales, and novels. This tradition hasn't slowed down with time, with a good chunk of each new anime season being made up of adaptations of popular manga series. But it isn't just manga, anime's inherent flexibility as a medium means that many beloved stories from other mediums have received anime adaptations.
However, many of these anime adaptations have been forgotten. There can be many reasons for this. Sometimes a show is rejected by viewers, who opt to push the show out of their memory and never talk about it. Sometimes, an adaption only has a limited release or is released unusually, meaning many viewers never hear about it. Or, often, the simple passage of time leads to an adaption fading from the public consciousness.

It's getting weird out there. We almost seem to be living in a post-satire era, where fact and fiction feel so interchangeable that it can be hard to tell what's news and what's a well-written joke. When The Onion starts feeling more accurate than The New York Times, it's hard to tell which end is up, and media literacy is at an all-time low. That means satire is being read completely straight, and while that's nothing new (remember "Fight Club"?), it does feel pretty scary. Then again, one of the greatest satires of all time was originally taken at face value (and still is by some viewers) — that's right, I'm talking about Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers."
