Hulu’s new Original movie “Eenie Meanie” delves into the impact of past choices and the painful necessity of breaking toxic cycles. Written and directed by Shawn Simmons in his feature debut, the film is anchored by a riveting lead performance from Samara Weaving as Edie Meaney, a reformed getaway driver trying desperately to escape her criminal past. Alongside Weaving, Karl Glusman stars as John, her reckless on-again, off-again partner, while Andy Garcia plays their menacing former boss, Nico. “Eenie Meanie” blends slick heist sequences with a raw emotional arc, which looks at Edie’s decision to be loyal in love and work, and the toxic, relentless hold she has on her old habits.

There is a moral tension at the heart of movies about criminals that often goes unspoken. Namely, the idea that crime is generally not something to aspire to or be proud of. This morality is essentially conventional wisdom and doesn't require being stated outright, certainly not after the days of the Hays Code imposing some sort of moral message on numerous crime movies. Most crime films made after the collapse of the production code took one of several approaches, such as presenting criminals in the form of a grounded character study (with depiction not necessarily equalling endorsement), or as lovable underdogs who make characters (or institutions) that are either morally...

Few shows have captivated audiences like the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things. Netflix’s beloved show has been pulling in massive audiences since its 2016 debut, and everyone is eagerly waiting for its fifth and final season. Fittingly, not everything is as it seems. Promotional materials are setting fans up for some massive changes, and the show is promising an experience akin to “eight blockbuster movies.”

Stranger Things is saving the best for last. Actor David Harbour, who portrays Jim Hopper in the beloved Netflix series, recently hyped up the forthcoming series finale, referring to it as the best episode in the entire history of the show.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcasts 10th-anniversary celebration in New York City on Thursday, Oct. 17, Harbour shared (via People) that he "can be very critical of this show. However, he revealed that in the series finale: "They land the plane, and it is the best episode theyve ever done." The actor also shared how the cast reacted while doing a table read for the episode, saying, "The end of this episode when we were reading it just us reading it about halfway through, people started crying. Then about the last 20 minutes, it was just uncontrollably crying, waves of different people. Noah Schnapp being my favorite.

The character of Jim Hopper on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things has a tragic history, having lost a young daughter named Sara to cancer – an illness he blames on the fact that he served in the Chemical Corps during the Vietnam War and worked with Agent Orange. Sara was glimpsed in flashbacks in the season 1 finale, where she was played by child actress Elle Graham. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is currently in production, and Sara will be making another appearance in this last batch of episodes – but that Stranger Things season 1 finale was eight years ago, so Graham, who is now 15 years old, has aged out of the role. That’s why Carmen Cuba Casting has sent out a casting call letting us know that Stranger Things is looking for a new, US-based actress who resembles Graham and can play Sara in Stranger Things season...

Stranger Things season 5 will bring back a character briefly seen in season 1, and this points to the shows final season solving a huge Hopper (David Harbour) mystery. After four successful seasons with many twists and shocking reveals, Stranger Things is ending with its fifth season, and there are still many mysteries to solve. Plot details about Stranger Things season 5 are still unknown, but its expected to solve the remaining mysteries of the Upside Down, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), Hawkins Lab, and those of some characters, such as Hopper.
Stranger Things season 4 ended on a major cliffhanger, starting with Max (Sadie Sink) surviving her encounter with Vecna but being left in a coma. Maxs near-death experience was enough for Vecnas plan to be set into motion, and so season 4 ended with the Upside Down starting to bleed into the human world. The recent release of Are You There God? It's Me Margaret may have some Stranger Things fans surprised as they realize that there isn't just one, but two, major connections between the Judy Blume film adaptation and the 80s sci-fi hit. Are You There God? It's Me Margaret is a movie based on the 1970 book by Judy Blume telling the story of Margaret, a young girl who moves to a new town and struggles with growing up and religion. Meanwhile, Stranger Things is a science fiction saga about a small Indiana town rocked by supernatural events led by a young girl named Eleven.
The most obvious connection between Are You There God? It's Me Margaret and Stranger Things is the name Nancy Wheeler. In the former, Nancy Wheeler is Margaret's bossy neighbor who teaches her the ways of her New Jersey town and school. On the other hand, in Stranger Things,...

Plot: A young girl finds herself struggling after her family moves away from the city. Based on the popular novel of the same name, by Judy Blume.
Review: My recollection of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is very vague. I knew Judy Blume and had perhaps read some of her books, but not this tale of a preteen girl. So even with the talent involved, I wasn’t excited about the movie. And then, I sat down for a screening. Perhaps it was the charms of the lovely and vibrant Rachel McAdams as Margaret’s mom? Sure. How about the excellent work of Kathy Bates as Margaret’s loving grandmother? Yes, yes, yes. And then there is the terrific Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret. Yet, the superstar here is writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig. Let’s dig in and see if Margaret’s prayers get answered.

Judy Blume’s beloved 1970 classic young adult novel finally makes it to the big screen in a sweet film of the same name, Are You There God? It’S Me, Margaret. The biggest question with this charming film version is what took it so long? Maybe it was waiting for writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig, who has crafted a marvelous film adaptation, that balances the novel’s honesty with a lightness and entertaining touch appropriate for the character’s age. In the more than 50 years that it took for Judy Blume’s beloved young adult novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret to reach movie screens, the world has become a much different place. And yet, books are still being banned from schools and libraries, and the level of openness and honesty that society allows itself when it comes to the changes that girls face on the precipice of puberty is still very much on shaky ground.
Blume’s 1970 classic, which has been challenged by censorious cultural gatekeepers due to its impenitent depictions of first menstruation and mutable religious identity, remains, to its devoted audience, less a touchstone than a veritable lifeline. And if the book itself is no longer as prime a target for censorship today, Blume herself recently mused that, if anything, today’s challenges to books and the conflicts that surround them are more insidious...

It’s not just you: 2023 is the year of Judy Blume. The iconic author has seen on-screen adaptations dating back to a “Forever” 1978 TV movie, the 2012 big-screen take on “Tiger Eyes,” even a ’90s-era TV series, “Fudge-a-Mania,” and now she has a documentary and a feature released within days of each other. She’s seemingly, suddenly everywhere — and thank goodness for that because, we need her now more than ever.
The Blume book you know (and love) best — the titillating “Forever”? the wacky “Fudge” series? the aching “Deenie”? — is more than a litmus test for your young-adult literary obsessions; it can also hold hints as to what you’ve held on to, even as an adult. However, we’ll hazard a guess that “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is her most enduring book, if only because, tucked inside its wonderfully specific story about a pre-teen girl eagerly anticipating...

Like Judy Blume’s treasured young adult classic, Kelly Fremon Craig’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret begins in 1970 with 11-year-old Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) getting the worst news any New York City-raised child can get: her family is moving to New Jersey. It’s not only that Margaret will have to leave behind her wise-cracking grandmother Sylvia (Kathy Bates) or her friends or school, but that being 11 years old often means everything is the end of the world. The crushing despair that makes adolescence feel like a rueful eternity is Fremon Craig’s specialty.
For Blume devotees, this adaptation of the author’s hit novel is––take a breath––very faithful. Devoid of modern-day winkings, needling jokes, or overlong proselytizing, It’s Me, Margaret (for short) is mercifully for its target audience. That the script, also by Fremon Craig, better services Margaret’s parents Barbara...

In a desert littered with intellectual-property revivals, prequels, sequels, and other failed attempts at blockbuster fare, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" is an oasis. Though this adaptation of the beloved Judy Blume novel cannot claim to be wholly original, itself a take on one of the most well-known YA novels ever published, it represents a remarkable and welcome balm from the current state of the modern movie. Here is a film that, like its source material, treats its characters with care and tenderness, establishing an instant and unbreakable bond with the audience that hits home in scene after scene. Coming from Kelly Fremon Craig, the writer/director of the smart and spiky teen dramedy "The Edge of Seventeen," it's little surprise that "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" is so calmly brilliant, so intelligent, and patient, and knowing. This is the first great film of the new year.

Ask any young woman about the book that changed their life and most will, in some form, mention Judy Blume’s 1970 novel “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” The story of an 11-year-old girl trying to navigate middle school and puberty has been the subject of banned book lists and was perceived as unfilmable — both because of Blume’s protectiveness over the material and the novel’s frank look at menstruation.
Director Kelly Fremon Craig is no stranger to young women in a state of transition, having helmed the equally wonderful “Edge of Seventeen” in 2016. Her take on “Are You There God” is filled with heart and isn’t afraid to talk about all the topics that made Blume’s novel so controversial. At times, the feature is jarring in how overt it discusses periods, bras, and tween girls’ desire to grow up too fast. Concurrently, it’s such a sweet,...

Judy Blume never wanted her classic adolescent novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret turned into a film. The beloved author received numerous calls from Hollywood executives over the years asking for her blessing (and the rights). “Not every book has to be a movie,” the author said recently. “I just didn’t think it would ever be done in the way that I would have felt proud of.”
She makes a fair point. Blume’s novel — a modest story of a sixth grader who, on the cusp of puberty, finds herself talking with God — endures because it offers readers solace during a famously uncertain time. Puberty happens to everyone, but amid newly sprouting pimples and peculiar body odors one can suddenly feel desperately alone. An adaptation would be too easy to botch, could too easily shatter the magic Blume so carefully conjured. So, the writer gently turned...

Legendary author Judy Blume has written 29 books and swore the only one she would never consider selling for the screen was 1970’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, her timeless coming-of-age book that became a rite of passage for just about every girl, like Margaret, going from age 11 to 12, and probably their mothers as well. Blume held fast until 2018 when writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig and her mentor, Oscar-winning filmmaker James L. Brooks, came calling with just the right idea for an adaptation. The deal was sealed. The movie is here. Blume says she is probably the only author to say the movie is better than her book.
It may have taken half a century to do it but, there can be no doubt that Craig has gotten it right. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is as perfect an adaptation of a life-changing book as there will ever be.

There’s a big wide world of cinema out there, but if you’re putting together a big list of the best, most magical, most reliably leave-you-in-a-puddle-of-tears moving, the coming-of-age movie has to be in the mix. Lady Bird. The Breakfast Club. Moonlight. We’re welling up here.
When it comes to coming-of-age movies, director Kelly Fremon Craig. In the new issue of _Empire, she writes exclusively about her own adolescence, cinematic inspirations, why coming-of-age stories mean so much to her, and how Blume’s books – and this one in particular – shot straight into her 11-year-old brain. Read a short extract of the piece below:

When I was preparing to make this film, I went back and read my diaries from the 6th grade. Like Margaret, I was a distraught late bloomer. Margaret prays – begs, even – for God to make her chest grow. I did all that, plus some.

One heartbreaking Stranger Things scene explains why Jim Hopper (David Harbor) helps the kids out throughout the show. The Netflix show establishes Hopper as a lousy cop, so it's interesting that he would go above and beyond to help find Will (Noah Schnapp) in Stranger Things season 1 and protect the Party from danger in subsequent seasons. Though Hopper is initially established as a typical jerk cop, he proves himself to be more than that when Will goes missing, as he seems determined to discover the true secret behind the kid's disappearance. As it turns out, a glimpse into Hopper's backstory explains why he's so willing to help out the kids when they're in need.
